Hey All,

Another week has started and, if I’m not mistaken, today is the first official day of summer. I hope whatever plans you have for the summer or just for this week will be enjoyable. In the meantime, let’s get into the entertainment news for today:

TELEVISION

Richard Dean Anderson will guest star on the upcoming USA Network series Facing Kate, appearing in at least five episodes. The series stars Sarah Shahi (Life) as Kate Reed, a top-flight litigator who leaves her firm to become a mediator. Anderson will play David Smith, a charismatic but secretive man who enters Kate’s life shortly after the death of her father. In short order, it is revealed that David has deeper connections to the Reed family. (Fancast.com)

Matthew Lillard (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Gillian Vigman (Defenders) have landed the leads in the CMT single-camera comedy pilot The Hard Life. Lillard and Vigman will play a married couple who attempt to be great parents and spouses but who find it difficult to juggle everything in their lives. (Deadline Hollywood Daily and Televisionary)

International pop star Charice has signed on to recur next season on Glee as a foreign exchange student whose killer vocals get Rachel (Lea Michele) contemplating murder. Not literally, mind you. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

No big surprise here: HBO picks up True Blood for a fourth season. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

Four new characters (not including incoming diva Vanessa Williams) will be added to Desperate Housewives this fall. The quartet includes: Maxine: A sweet lady in the 60-80 year-old age range. Maxine is Mike and Susan’s new neighbor in their apartment building, and she has an unusual job that brings in some additional income. Beth: This quirky, sweet thirtysomething woman was Paul Young’s prison pen pal-cum-wife. She’s damaged emotionally but also capable of humor. Penny Scavo: Tom and Lynette’s 12-year-old daughter is being recast. Not sure why. Keith: Hot, sexy, 30-year-old contractor. He’s a charming playboy who turns up on Wisteria Lane. Think Mike Delfino 15 years ago. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE

Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous), Shanna Collins (Swingtown), and Caitlin Custer have joined the cast of the HBO made-for-TV movie Cinema Verte, based on the groundbreaking 1970s reality series An American Family, which stars Tim Robbins, Diane Lane, James Gandolfini, and Thomas Dekker. Elsewhere, Alex Wolff (The Naked Brothers Band) has signed on for a multiple-episode story arc on HBO’s In Treatment, where he will play the son of Gabriel Byrne’s Paul. (Deadline Hollywood Daily and Televisionary)

MOVIES

Simon Pegg revealed he is the new voice behind the brave pint-sized mouse warrior Reepicheep in The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He is replacing Bill Nighy who was announced as a replacement for Eddie Izzard (who voiced the character in Prince Caspian). (First Showing)

Linda Cardellini, Michael Shannon and Tim Blake Nelson will star in the indie drama Return, which tells the story of a woman (Cardellini) who returns home from war to her husband (Shannon) and kids in a small town and struggles to readjust. Nelson will play an older war vet who befriends the female soldier. (First Showing and Variety)

Bruce Dern has joined the movie adaptation of The Big Valley, the 1960’s western TV series of the same name which followed a family of ranchers. (First Showing and Deadline Hollywood Daily)

Disney has lined up 10 young actors and actresses (mostly unknowns) for the ensemble cast of Prom, a high school comedy which the studio hopes will serve as a launch for a new franchise much like High School Musical. The movie is said to be similar in tone to John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink. (First Showing and Deadline Hollywood Daily)

Walton Goggins (Justified) has landed a role in Cowboys & Aliens where Apache Indians and Western settlers must put their differences aside when a spaceship crash lands in their city. The cast includes Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano and Clancy Brown. (First Showing and Deadline Hollywood Daily)

Michael Shannon and Jamie Chung have joined the cast of the thriller Premium Rush, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a New York bike messenger who picks up an envelope at Columbia University, and suddenly finds himself chased throughout the city by a dirty cop desperate to get his hands on it. Shannon will be playing the corrupt cop in pursuit while Chung will play Gordon-Levitt’s ex-girlfriend, a fellow daredevil bike messenger who helps him outwit the cop. (First Showing and The Hollywood Reporter)

Q&A SECTION (with Matt Roush from TV Guide)

Question: As a longtime fan of intelligent and complex sci-fi on TV, I have been disheartened to see so little interest by producers or writers in the genre. With the success of the whole Star Trek group, Farscape, and, lately, Battlestar Galactica, I would think that the mainstream networks (plus show developers) would be motivated to put together something that stimulates as well as entertains. Of the current series available on TV, Eureka is pretty good to better than good, Sanctuary is way too uneven, Stargate Universe is bleak & boring, and V is cartoon sci-fi. That’s a pretty thin menu. Do you see any indicators that someone/anyone is working on more sci-fi for those with brains and imaginations? Finally, I hope and pray that Joss Whedon cranks up his creative mojo real soon. I miss his quality of work. — Jan

Matt Roush: Sci-fi traditionally is a tough sell for the mainstream networks, especially of the darker and meatier variety. Launching shows in this genre is an expensive and risky proposition, and as you’ll see when you sample most of this fall’s new output, risk isn’t what the networks are particularly interested in right now. (NBC’s The Event does have an element of the fantastic in its premise, so we’ll see how that goes. It can’t be worse than the last few seasons of Heroes.)

Otherwise, a partial list of sci-fi/fantasy titles in active development that have caught my interest includes: AMC tackling horror in a zombie series, The Walking Dead; BBC America’s current success with Doctor Who and a second season of Being Human coming later this summer (which is being developed into a U.S. format by Syfy, and I’ll reserve judgment on that until later), plus a new season of Primeval for next year as well as a bona fide sci-fi series, Outcasts, set on a remote planet; Torchwood’s much anticipated new season, courtesy of Starz; HBO’s epic fantasy series A Game of Thrones, also for next year. And with the exception of the morose Caprica (which is beginning to pique my interest), while Syfy has gone rather light as it aims for mass appeal in many of its sci-fi/fantasy series (Eureka, Warehouse 13, etc.), I’m intrigued by at least one title on their slate: Alphas, whose pilot will be directed by Lost’s Jack Bender. Will any of these be as rich as Battlestar Galactica or as full of potential as Firefly or as peculiar and dangerous as Dollhouse? We’ll see. But yes, let’s hope it doesn’t take too long to get Joss Whedon back doing TV, whether it’s network or cable — or the Internet, for that matter.

Question: I’ve got a question about one of my favorite guilty pleasures, Human Target. I always thought that the show was an enjoyable action piece, and with Jackie Earle Haley and Chi McBride along for the ride, you just had a feeling these guys were seriously having a good time. Here’s my question: While it was picked up, Human Target was moved to Fridays (typically a dead zone for TV, as far as I’m concerned). Will this move help the show, or hurtle it toward premature cancellation (see: Firefly, Dollhouse and just about anything Fox put on Fridays as of late)? — Steve

Matt Roush: Seeing the move to Fridays as a positive development would be disingenuous, but it is a lifeline of sorts for a show that could have fallen through the cracks altogether, especially as it isn’t produced by the Fox studio (already making it an underdog). The upside anytime Fox moves a show to Friday is that expectations couldn’t be lower, so if Human Target does any business whatsoever it would be a pleasant surprise. And should something fall apart on one of the weeknight lineups, a show like this would make a great utility back-up player. I agree with you that this show is lots of fun, and the spark provided by the supporting players is infectious. I’m hoping it finds its niche, but it will almost certainly be an uphill climb.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Lee Ann

True Blood

Breaking News:  HBO announced today they are renewing their hit vampire series True Blood for a fourth season.  The renewal of the series isn’t really that surprising given that the show’s premiere last week pulled in 5.1 million viewers.  That is an increase of 38 percent over last summer’s season premiere.  Congrats to the cast and crew for the early renewal.

Yavanna

Artist SpotlightDawn Anton is a talented jewelry maker from Ocean Beach, California, who offers three distinctive styles in her collection, but her favorite and most creatively rewarding pieces are fashioned using natural brass filigree, vintage glass, Swarovski crystals, and gemstones.

Her artistic and creative inclinations began in childhood through painting, sketching and writing. Some of her other interests included geology, rocks and minerals, leading to a love of gemstones, and European and American history, which – in a round-about way – lead to a fascination with antique and estate jewelry, as well as a secret tiara fixation.

Thanks to several books she found at the library, her self-taught hobby of beading began around 2002-2003; she then took a wire-wrapping class at a local bead shop and in 2004 she narrowed her interest to making jewelry with sterling silver wire especially after finding a better supply of gemstones. Soon enough, friends and co-workers were requesting custom designs and Dawn was spending countless hours in the happy pursuit of designing and finishing pieces without getting tired.

Her inspiration comes from what she sees and reads and thanks to her love of movies and books, her jewelry is deeply influenced by those interests. One of her favorites is The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, including The Silmarillion, which was edited and published posthumously by Tolkien’s son Christopher in 1977. Her fascination with those characters and the important role jewelry and gemstones played in the history of Middle-earth gives valuable inspiration for much of her creations. Dawn’s featured piece is one of her favorite necklaces called Yavanna, which is inspired by a character from The Silmarillion.

You can contact Dawn at info@asilomarworks.com or via convo through her Etsy shop, which can be found at http://asilomarworks.etsy.com.

In honor of Father’s Day, I felt it was only right to pay a special tribute to just some of the wonderful father and daughter teams that have graced our television sets in recent years. I don’t know about you, but I was very fortunate to have had a terrific relationship with my father – who passed away on August 13, 1994 – and in light of our special bond I always feel a special kinship with fathers and daughters as portrayed in my favorite TV shows. While each team highlighted below may or may not always have the best relationship, each of them was there for the other and could be counted on in times of trial as well as triumph.

So without further ado, here is a list of the father and daughter teams from just some of my favorite TV shows who I feel should be celebrated:

Richard and Alexis Castle

Richard and Alexis Castle (Nathan Fillion and Molly Quinn) on Castle – This father and daughter team from the popular ABC cop drama Castle (which airs on Monday nights at 10 PM) optimizes what I think all father and daughters should be: loving, silly, sometimes irreverent, and yes, sometimes irritated with each other. This is the first father-daughter team that I have seen on television that resembles my late father and I the most; and seeing them together fills me with joy and sadness all at once; but I’m always left with one thing when watching them on screen together: I BELIEVE they are father and daughter and that speaks to the talent of the actors portraying them.

Keith and Veronica Mars

Keith and Veronica Mars (Enrico Colantoni and Kristen Bell) on Veronica Mars – Veronica Mars was perhaps THE best show to come out of the now-defunct United Paramount Network (UPN), one of the few shows that also survived the union of UPN and the now-defunct WB Network (nee the CW) – even if for only one season. It is to the credit of these fine actors that the viewers got yet another insightful look inside a wonderful, loving father-daughter relationship. What drew this team apart from the Castle’s, though, is that Keith actually taught Veronica everything she knew about being a private investigator and Veronica had a much more difficult live than Alexis; but with a dad like Keith Mars she always had a strong supporter and defender.

Harold and Amy Abbott

Harold and Amy Abbott (Emily Van Camp and Tom Amandes) on Everwood – In the town of Everwood, Colorado, nestled beneath elegant white-peaked mountains, housed the father-daughter team of Amy and (Dr.) Harold Abbott, who didn’t always have a smooth relationship over the years that the series was on the WB, but they were always there for each other. Harold was stern with his daughter Amy and she, like most normal teenagers, rebuked his rules and rebelled; but in the end they both came out the better for it.

James and Sydney Hansen

James and Sydney Hansen (Melina Kanakaredes and Jim Farrell) on Providence – Unlike the previous three father-daughter teams, Dr. Sydney Hansen was a grown adult who moved back home to Providence, Rhode Island after the death of her mother. Her relationship with her father, (Dr.) James Hansen, may not have always been special in the same way as the aforementioned “teams”, but their bond was strong nonetheless.

Stephen and Lori Trager

Stephen and Lori Trager (April Matson and Bruce Thomas) on Kyle XY – The Trager family was your normal, average, all-American family who ended up with an extraordinary guest in their home when mom Nicole, a psychologist, brought home a patient, Kyle, who had no memory of his past and displayed savant-like qualities. Lori and her dad Stephen had what you could say was a normal, average relationship until Kyle came along and things changed (not to mention the changes a father and daughter go through as the daughter grows up); but their familial ties were always strong and they could count on us each no matter what.

Jack and Sydney Bristow

Jack and Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner and Victor Garber) on Alias – In one of the more complicated father-daughter relationships on television, Sydney Bristow started out the series as a college student with a huge secret: she was a spy. Eventually, she learned her father – as well as her mother – was also a spy, leading to one of the most dysfunctional, abnormal family units on television. While Jack did really seem to love his daughter, without ever saying the actual words to her, Sydney also loved her father despite her better judgment.

Admiral Adama and Starbuck

Admiral William Adama and Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace (Katee Sackhoff and Edward James Olmos) on Battlestar Galactica – While Kara Thrace was not his biological daughter, she certainly was treated as such by William Adama. It also didn’t hurt that, at one point in time, she was engaged to his youngest son, Zach, who died tragically in a Viper training run. Over the course of time while the survivors of the second war with the Cylons struggled to survive on the outskirts of space, jumping from one solar system to another and both of them fighting their own inner demons, a familial relationship between this pseudo father-daughter team was always strong while at the same time complicated.

These are my favorite father and daughter teams from recent television series. Who are your favorites? Please share.

It’s a David James Elliott (JAG) weekend with not only his new Hallmark Channel movie Dad’s Home debuting tonight (June 19) at 9 PM (check local listings for airtime in your area) but also the debut of his new summer series Scoundrels on ABC, airing tomorrow night (June 20) at 9 PM.

First, the Hallmark Channel movie Dad’s Home is about Ben Westman (Elliott), who is shocked when he loses his job as an advertising executive because – of all things – he makes too much money. He ends up in a new role, that of Mr. Mom; but he makes a mess of everything. In time he gets his bearings and even finds support in the form of his son’s teacher, Hope (Sharon Case, The Young and the Restless). But, when he receives an offer for a great job in another city, Ben has to decide what is most important in his life.

The cast also includes Madison Davenport (Amish Grace) and Will Shadley (Dirty Sexy Money, playing his daughter Lindsay and son Dylan.

Dad’s Home premieres on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, June 19 at 9 PM.

Scoundrels

As for the new ABC series Scoundrels, viewers will get to see a very different side of Elliott, as he plays Wolf West, the patriarch of a clan of criminals – albeit the non-violent, non-drug using kind. Wolf and his wife Cheryl (Virginia Madsen) have been married for two decades and are still very much in love – even with 4 children to contend with. However, all is not rosy in the family when Papa West is sentenced to a four-year prison term (which was expected to only be a seven-month stint) and Cheryl will, inadvertently, become a single mom overseeing the family “business” and reigning in her out-of-control son Cal (Patrick Flueger) and her wayward daughters Heather (Leven Rambin) and Hope (Vanessa Marano). Her son Logan – twin to Cal (also played by Patrick Flueger) has his “head on straight” and has just passed the bar.

Scoundrels, based on the New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune, will debut on ABC on Sunday, June 20 at 9 PM.

TELEVISION

ABC has once again benched the series Happy Town. With only two episodes left to go the network has pulled the show from the line-up. Repeats of Castle will fill the empty timeslot (Wednesdays at 10 PM). It is believed; however, that these two episodes will turn up on a Saturday evening later this summer much like what ABC is doing with the two remaining unaired episodes of both The Forgotten (which will be seen on July 3) and Eastwick (which will air on July 10). (The Futon Critic)

Anna Camp – last seen as Sarah Newlin in True Blood – will guest star in a future episode of the new USA series Covert Affairs. The new series will debut on July 13 and stars Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly), Christopher Gorham (Ugly Betty), Kari Matchett (24), Anne Dudek (House), Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes) and Peter Gallagher (The O.C.). (Zap2It)

Showtime has renewed the Billie Piper-led dark comedy Secret Diary of a Call Girl for a fourth season, which would be the series’ last. It is expected to return in early 2011 and the final season would likely focus on the relationship between Piper’s Belle/Hannah and her best friend Ben (Iddo Goldberg). (Televisionary and The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed)

ABC Family is developing an espionage drama called Shadows, about a secret Harvard-based program that recruits and trains young spies. The project will follow the students and faculty of this shadowy program. (Televisionary and The Hollywood Reporter)

AJ Cook

The news broke on Tuesday, June 15 that actress AJ Cook was not being picked up for another season of the successful CBS series Criminal Minds. Meanwhile, her co-star Paget Brewster will continue to appear in the series, but with reduced episode appearances. As can be imagined, fans are screaming “sexism” and are very upset; so much so they have created a petition in support of the female leads of the show. If you would like to partcipate in this petition, please visit the following to make your voice heard: http://www.petitiononline.com/cmwomen/petition.html.

Paget Brewster

Please keep in mind, however, that getting Ms. Cook reinstated to the show or convincing the “powers that be” that Ms. Brewster should get more airtime will be an uphill battle that, more likely than not, will be unsurmountable. I do commend those who are making this impassioned plea, though.

Good Luck!
