High School Musical star Zac Efron is in negotiations to join the adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel The Lucky One, which follows the story of a Marine who returns to North Carolina after having survived three tours of duty in Iraq. He attributes his good luck to a photo he has always carried with him, a photo of a woman he’s never met. Now that he’s returned, he sets out to meet her. (Vulture and Dark Horizons)
Daniel Craig has closed a deal to star in the film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s ‘Millennium’ novel trilogy starting with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Craig would play Mikael Blomkvist, a divorced, middle-aged hard-nosed investigative reporter in Stockholm famous for his exposing corruption and scandal in business and government. He’s also co-publisher of the magazine Millennium and has had several lovers. (Risky Biz Blog and Dark Horizons)
Now it looks like actor Tom Hardy (Inception) will play one of the two male leads in the box office movie This Means War, starring alongside Chris Pine. The movie is to follow two best friends and veteran spies who fall for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon) who has moved into their spare room. They end up fighting for her affections using their black-ops warfare tactics, a fight which literally demolishes much of New York City along the way. (Vulture and Dark Horizons)
Edi Gathegi (The Twilight Saga movies) is joining X-Men: First Class in the role of Darwin, the first bi-racial mutant, who has the power of “reactive evolution,” which allows him to adapt to any situation or environment. Plunged underwater, he’ll grow gills, he’ll gain night vision in pitch black and his skin grows fire retardant when burned. (Deadline Hollywood Daily)

CONDOLENCES
Canadian character actor Maury Chaykin passed away today (July 27). Chaykin appeared in the movie Dances With Wolves, and in TV shows such as C.S.I., ‘Boston Legal and Entourage (among many others). His acting career spans 35 years. He was 61. (TV Guide)

RUMOR PATROL
It looks like Pushing Daisies actor Lee Pace may be in line to join the cast of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. If this comes to pass, Pace will play Garrett, a friend of Edward’s, who is described in the script as a tall, nomadic vampire with sandy hair that he keeps tied back with a leather thong. Garrett is also penned as being down-to-earth, laid-back, rugged and having a lightness and element of humor about him. Production on Breaking Dawn is slated to begin this fall, though no exact date has been announced. No confirmations have been made, though, on this casting so stay tuned. (E! Entertainment Online)
