Summer Ratings

While it is clearly no longer summer, as evidenced by the fact we have entered the fourth week of the fall TV season, there are still a few summer series that are just now completing their summer runs. With that thought in mind, and the fact that I actually keep track of ratings throughout the entire year, I have compiled an overall average of the 27 summer shows that aired on the cable networks (more on the major network shows below) over the summer and leading into the middle of October.

Most bloggers and critics will tell you that only the 18 to 34 demographic numbers from the ratings system is what is followed by the networks, the studios and the industry as a whole, but I whole-heartedly disagree. I honestly believe that the overall ratings received by every show are just as important simply because the median age of viewers is approximately 54 years old.

But before I digress into an examination of the ratings system and demographics, the following list consists of the overall viewers for all 27 summer shows from the cable networks. Please keep in mind that this list is not based on any kind of scientific data just a simple average of viewers. Please also note that not all summer shows aired the same amount of episodes; some aired as few as 9 or as many as 18 so the averages are not exact; but I have stipulated how many episodes each series aired:

The Closer – 7.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Rizzoli & Isles – 6.9 million (aired 10 episodes)
Burn Notice – 5.7 million (aired 12 episodes)
Royal Pains – 5.4 million (aired 12 episodes)
Covert Affairs – 5.2 million (aired 11 episodes)
True Blood – 5 million (aired 12 episodes)
White Collar – 4.3 million (aired 9 episodes)
Psych – 3.6 million (aired 9 episodes)
Memphis Beat – 3.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
In Plain Sight – 3.4 million (aired 13 episodes)
Leverage – 3.3 million (aired 13 episodes)
Army Wives – 3.3 million (aired 18 episodes)
The Glades – 3.1 million (aired 13 episodes)
Hawthorne – 3.1 million (aired 10 episodes)
The Secret Life of the American Teenager – 2.9 million (aired 14 episodes)
Pretty Little Liars – 2.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
Drop Dead Diva – 2.6 million (aired 13 episodes)
Warehouse 13 – 2.5 million (aired 12 episodes)
Eureka – 2.4 million (aired 9 episodes)
Mad Men – 2.3 million (aired 13 episodes) *
Dark Blue – 2.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Haven – 1.8 million (aired 13 episodes)
Huge – 1.7 million (aired 10 episodes)
Make It or Break It – 1.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
Rescue Me – 1.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Unnatural History – 1.2 million (aired 13 episodes)
Rubicon – 1 million (aired 13 episodes) *

* These two series (Rubicon and Mad Men) will air their finales on October 17 so averages of their overall ratings were used in lieu of the ratings for the last two episodes.

The only summer series, thus far, to be canceled is the ABC Family Channel show Huge.

As for the summer shows on the major networks, a list was compiled by Entertainment Weekly of the most watched shows, including the following:

Lie to Me – 7.3 million
Rookie Blue – 7.2 million
Flashpoint – 7 million
Miami Medical – 6.5 million
The Good Guys – 4.6 million
Friday Night Lights – 4.1 million
Scoundrels – 3.8 million
The Gates – 3.8 million
Persons Unknown – 2.8 million

Of the above shows, Persons Unknown, Scoundrels and Miami Medical were not renewed. It is also more likely than not that the series The Gates will not be back. Lie to Me returned with new episodes three weeks after its summer run because of the unexpected cancellation of new drama Lone Star. The Good Guys was also back with new episodes fairly quickly while Rookie Blue was renewed for a second season after only a few episodes were aired.  Friday Night Lights will be back on DirecTV on October 27 and on NBC next year while Flashpoint should return next summer.

What summer shows did you enjoy watching the most? Which ones did you dislike? Which ones did you avoid? Which shows are you most excited to see return?  Please share your thoughts on the summer programming by the major and cable networks.

Hey All,

How is everyone’s Tuesday going? I hope it’s going well! Is everyone prepared for loads of shows to watch tonight? Coz there is a lot of programming scheduled on Tuesdays. Hope you’ve got the DVR’s (or whatever recording equipment you use) revved up and ready to go.

Anyway, here are the news items for today:

TELEVISION

ABC Family Channel announced that their new hit series Pretty Little Liars and the final season of Greek will both return on January 3 at 8 and 9 PM respectively. The network’s other shows The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Make It or Break It will be back in early spring. (Twitter)

Meanwhile, Syfy has announced the holiday-themed episodes of Eureka and Warehouse 13 will air on December 7 at 8 and 9 PM (respectively) and the network’s version of the UK hit Being Human is being slated for a January debut. (Twitter)

Harold Perrineau (Lost) will guest star in an upcoming episode of the new ABC legal drama The Whole Truth. He will play Paul Braun, a psychic who leads the NYPD to the body of a young woman. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

Ryan Devlin, who has appeared in guest roles on Grey’s Anatomy and Cougar Town, will be appearing in at least four episodes of Brothers & Sisters as a fun, smart, and precocious grad student in Kitty’s (Calista Flockhart) law class. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

The creative team behind the A&E series Breakout Kings (who were producers on Prison Break) are planning to resurrect Prison Break character T-Bag (Robert Knepper) for their new show. A deal has yet to be worked out with Knepper, though. The show is set to debut on A&E in early 2011. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

It looks like the CW is going to lighten up their new series Nikita in order to boost viewership among young females. The show is off to a solid start among total viewers, but is losing too many viewers in the highly-sought demographic of 18-34 year olds. Among the tweaking to be done on the show is the introduction of several new characters, including a confidant and potential love interest for Nikita who’s described as a clean-cut, all-American CIA case officer. (Michael Ausiello at Entertainment Weekly)

BOX OFFICE NEWS

Alan Arkin will star opposite Jennifer Aniston in the dark independent film called Buttercup. He will play a grossly irresponsible father who, in the wake of his wife’s death, decides to get his life back on track with the help of his slightly neurotic daughter (Aniston). (Jeff Sneider at The Wrap)

The HBO original movie, which is an adaptation of the best-selling Wall Street expose “Too Big To Fail” has revealed its impressive all-star cast, which includes the following: Paul Giamatti, Topher Grace, Ed Asner, Tony Shalhoub, James Woods, Dan Hedaya, Cynthia Nixon, Michael O’Keefe, Kathy Baker and Billy Crudup. It was announced previously that William Hurt also stars in the film that will chronicle the financial meltdown of 2008 and centers on Treasury Secretary Paulson. (James Hibberd at Live Feed from The Hollywood Reporter)

Q&A SECTION (with Matt Mitovich from Fancast)

Question: I just read that Enrico Colantoni (love him on ‘Flashpoint’!) is going to guest star on ‘Bones,’ and that the episode will have significance to Brennan. Inquiring minds would like to know more, please. – Andrea via Facebook

Mitovich: I too was happy to see Enrico book this role, because it’s a great one. He’ll be playing a Jeffersonian security guard in Episode 8, titled “The Doctor In The Photo.” This is a “special” outing told almost exclusively from Brennan’s point of view, and as such it’s a very cool character study. Enrico’s character happens to listen in on each and every heady lecture given at the Jeffersonian, so he has a lot to say and share with Temp as she puts in overtime with a corpse who, rather confusingly, “talks” to her. (P.S. The guard is named Micah Leggat, which I am convinced is an anagram. Best I can come up with is “The Magic Gal,” which could be a nod to the “talking” deceased.) And hey, a second ‘Veronica Mars‘ alum is in this episode: Francis “Weevil” Capra will play Rhino, a gang member suspected of murder.

Question: You’re my No. 1 ‘Royal Pains‘ guy. Any new scoop to share? – Dionne

Mitovich: Chung-chung! When the USA Network dramedy returns for its winter season, ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ alumna Julianne Nicholson will guest-star as a workaholic investment bank trader who has fled NYC for the Hamptons after the tragic death of a friend.

Question: I am really anxious to see where the next season of ‘V‘ takes us. Is there anything you can tease? – Tim

Mitovich: In a nutshell: Anna will have much to answer for, having released the red sky (and the red rain that comes with it) far sooner than planned; the Fifth Column movement will go global; we’ll see more of the Visitors walking among us on Earth; and we’ll gain insight as to why Tyler was targeted by Anna. Also at NY Comic-Con, Morena Baccarin revealed that 1) just last week she worked with a 14-inch white rat and 2) she had to learn “tail acting” for a major OMG moment we got to see in the Season 2 premiere.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Hey All,

It’s the start of another week and here are the news items I found for today:

TELEVISION

The Dana Delany led new ABC drama Body of Proof has been pushed to mid-season in order for the network to “find a stronger timeslot” for it. The show is about a medical examiner (Delany) who helps investigate suspicious deaths. (Variety and Kate Stanhope at TV Guide)

The Fall TV season that failed us: Are you hooked on any of the new shows?

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

NBC has ordered a pilot script for the sci-fi/espionage drama Echelon, which will revolve around the electronic eavesdropping technology that sifts through all data signals. That data will be investigated by “G.H.O.S.T. (Global Hierarchical Observation Strategy Taskforce), whose assignment it is to investigate this paranormal data. (The Live Feed at The Hollywood Reporter and Televisionary)

TNT has given a pilot order to Hollywood & Vine, a noir mystery drama, which takes place in post-WWII Los Angeles. It centers on a savvy private eye with a stoic charm and an uncompromising set of personal values who is dedicated to searching for the truth – even if it means taking on the upper echelons of power in a city balanced precariously between the glamour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills and the dual threat of organized crime and a corrupt police department. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

BOX OFFICE NEWS

Sam Trammell (True Blood) will play the lead alongside either Amy Smart or Kate Mara (who are in contention for the female lead) in the romantic comedy Shrinking Charlotte. The story deals with a psychiatrist who falls for his slightly screw-loose patient. Kathleen Turner is also set to play a role. (What’s Playing and Dark Horizons)

Rhys Ifans has been offered the villain role in the Spider-Man reboot but studio insiders wouldn’t say which villain he will be playing. (Mike Fleming at Deadline)
