Around this time every year, pilot season arrives with hundreds of potential projects being filmed; but very few will actually make it on the air at the major and cable networks. And, of those few pilots that make it to series, even fewer will succeed with the viewing audience. To say the least pilot season is a tough time of year.

Dichen Lachman

Mike Dopud

Just like last year, the ladies over at NiceGirlsTV (myself included) wanted to bring you a list of just some of the hottest pilots that you will not be seeing mid-season (again at either the major or cable networks), but it certainly would be fun if these shows did actually happen.

The pilots that follow are listed in no particular order and, yes, they are remakes/reboots of past shows, but that seems to be the norm right now:

David Blue

Kandyse McClure

1. Hart to Hart – This new ABC series, which is a remake of the popular 80’s series, chronicles what happens when billionaire tech-wizard Jonathan Hart (Neil Hopkins from Lost) meets world-renowned photo-journalist Jennifer Edwards (Jewel Staite from Firefly and Stargate Atlantis). Their first encounter was nothing short of a disaster; but out of that disaster comes a whirlwind romance and a grand-scale wedding. Now they work as amateur sleuths, combining their expertise and skills to help their clients.

TAGLINE: “They may be in over their heads, but at least they are in it together.”

April Bowlby

Ray Wise

2. I Dream of Jeannie – This remake of the 60’s classic series comes to Syfy, featuring Dichen Lachman (from Dollhouse) as a modern-day genie who wreaks havoc on the life of Major Anthony “Tony” Nelson (Mike Dopud from Stargate Universe) who is assigned to a special section of NASA. Rather than just giving the standard three wishes, Jeannie decides to stay with her “master” no matter what because while it may have been love at first sight for her, he isn’t quite so sure about her intentions.

TAGLINE: “Be careful what you wish for.”

Paul Telfer

Emmanuelle Vaugier

3. Three’s Company – This new A&E series, loosely based on the 1970’s camp comedy, stars David Blue (Stargate Universe) as Jason Thatcher, a caring nurse at a small Santa Monica clinic who ends up with two very unexpected roommates: freelance entertainment blogger Zoe Ward (Kandyse McClure from Battlestar Galactica) and her best friend Maggie Wilson (April Bowlby from Drop Dead Diva) whose career is always in flux (one week she’s a dog walker, the next week she’s a house sitter). Their friendship blossoms under the watchful eye of their obnoxious landlord Stewart “Stew” Rollins (Twin Peaks veteran Ray Wise).

TAGLINE: “They may not have a lot in common, but they are always there for each other.”

Tom Welling

Mechad Brooks

4. Cover Up – Much like the short-lived series for which this pilot from the USA Network is based, Paul Telfer (the made for TV movie Hercules) stars as former Marine Special Forces Operative Mitch Halston, who is hired to work undercover as a model for renowned fashion photographer Denise Royce (Emmanuelle Vaugier from CSI: NY and Covert Affairs) to find out who murdered her husband. When they learn that her husband was a CIA operative, his agency reluctantly hires them to continue his work in secret, bringing down mercenaries and protecting foreign diplomats.

TAGLINE: “Looks can be deceiving, but never underestimate the determination of a woman on a mission.”

Danny Strong

Zach Ward

5. Magnum, P.I. – In this modern-day retelling of the popular 80’s PI series, that will air on FX, Tom Welling (of Smallville fame) takes on the leading role of Thomas Magnum (sans the moustache), a former Iraq War veteran who decides to move to Hawaii to start fresh. There he ends up working as head of security for the reclusive Robin Masters, where he must endure dealing with Hutchens (Danny Strong from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), the manager of the private Hawaiian estate, corralling his former Army buddies Taye “T.C.” Collins (Mechad Brooks from True Blood and My Generation) and Rick Wright (Zach Ward from Lost), who seem to get him into trouble on a daily basis, and freelancing as a private investigator to clients who have nowhere else to turn.

TAGLINE: “Who said living in paradise would be easy”.

Tyler Labine

Judy Greer

6. Mork & Mindy – The popular 80’s sitcom will be reborn on TNT, taking a slightly darker turn as Mork (Tyler Labine from Invasion and Reaper) is an alien who crash lands on Earth after his spaceship malfunctions, trapping him on our planet. But, this Mork is a bit more serious than his predecessor, as he is actually on a foraging mission for his home plant of Ork, a planet in an alternate universe, which is slowly dying. Here on Earth, he encounters Mindy Reed (Judy Greer), a research scientist, who could provide beneficial assistance in his mission; until he starts to have feelings for her.

TAGLINE: “What if your mission saved your home but would take the home of the woman you love?

The above list, of course, does not represent actual television pilots that are being considered or even being pitched this television season; instead they are the fictitious fancy of those of us at NiceGirlsTV. They are shows, however, that we would really like to see included in the next television season because they are shows we would watch. Now if only Hollywood was listening.

For the January 20 launch of the new USA Network series Fairly Legal, mediation rallies will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in the following cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco

Why mediation rallies? Well, you see, the lead character in the new series Fairly Legal, Kate Reed, (as played by Sarah Shahi) is a lawyer turned mediator so what better way to kick off the show than with these rallies.

The following cities will participate in the rallies on January 19:

New York: At Times Square at 9 AM, at Herald Square at 10:15 AM and at Union Square at Noon

Chicago: At Daley Plaza at 9:15 AM, at Lake/State Street at 10:15 AM and at Michigan Avenue at 11:45 AM

San Francisco: At Union Square at 9:30 AM, at Fisherman’s Wharf at 11:00 AM and at Ghirardelli Square at Noon

Los Angeles: At The Grove at 10:45 AM and on Rodeo Drive at 2:30 PM

Philadelphia: At the Liberty Bell at 9:25 AM and at Rittenhouse Square at 12:15 PM

(There will be mediation rallies on January 20, as well, but those locations are yet to be announced.)

Again, inspired by (fictional) mediator Kate Reed there will be signs at these locations stating “Get Kate. Mediate.” and “No Litigation, Only Mediation,” the mediation rallies hope to encourage people to see mediation, rather than litigation, as the answer to conflict resolution. And to drive the message home, rallies will include the distribution of 60,000 custom “Not So Black and White” cookies from Oui Cater in NYC. Instead of the traditional black and white icing, these special cookies will be gray and white and include the statement: “Justice isn’t always black and white. A classic cookie in a shade of gray. Because for Kate Reed, life is never black and white.

In addition to the cookies, rally participants will hand out cards with information about a sweepstakes where consumers can go here to win an exclusive 5-day trip for two to San Francisco (where the show is set). For each entry, USA will donate $1 to Peace First, an organization that teaches kids how to talk it out rather than act out.

Fairly Legal will premiere January 20 at 10 PM on USA Network.

Did you watch any of the cable series that returned in the fall (most of which ended their runs in December) or are you watching the cable shows that premiered this month? If so, you will remember I posted the ratings results for those fall cable shows about a month ago. It is once again time to review the ratings for those shows since the posting as well as the shows that returned in January.

Dexter – The season finale of this Showtime series was on December 12, earning the show 2.5 million viewers.

Sanctuary – The fall finale of Sanctuary aired on December 17, garnering this Syfy series 1.5 million viewers.

Tower Prep – The final five episodes of the first season of this live-action series on the Cartoon Network aired in December; however, the ratings numbers that seem to be available anywhere are for the episodes aired on December 14 and 21, but not the final two on December 28. The episode on December 14 earned 901,000 viewers while the back-to-back episodes on December 21 earned 982,000 and 1.1 million respectively. Until the numbers can be tracked down for the final two episodes that aired on December 28, a clear average of viewers cannot be determined; but an estimated average of viewers would be 1 million.

Psych – The final three episodes of the show aired on December 15 (back-to-back episodes) with the final episode airing on December 22. The two episodes from December 15 earned 2.4 and 2.5 million respectively with the final episode getting 2.9 million. That averages out to 2.6 million viewers.

Burn Notice – The final two episodes aired on December 16, earning 4.8 million and 5.1 million respectively for an average of 5 million viewers.

Leverage – The finale three episodes of the show also aired in December – one on the 12th and two on the 19th. The viewership for December 19 was 2.1 million with the back-to-back final episodes getting 2.5 and 2.6 million respectively. That averages out to 2.4 million viewers.

Glory Daze – The new TBS series aired 5 more episodes since the last cable ratings report; however, the only ratings numbers currently available are for the December 14 and 21 episodes, which received 1.1 and 1.3 million viewers respectively. There were new episodes on December 28, January 4 and January 11, but no ratings numbers seem to be available for those episodes. The series airs it finale this Tuesday, January 18 at 10 PM.

The Closer – Four more episodes have aired of this TNT staple with the finale being on January 3 (and the other episodes airing on December 13, 20 and 27). The first two December episodes earned the following ratings in order of appearance: 5.5 million and 5.4 million. The ratings for the other December episode and the final episode that aired on January 3 have not been released yet. The average for the two December episodes is 5.5 million.

Men of a Certain Age – This TNT series aired new episodes on December 13, 20 and 27 as well as on January 3. Those episodes earned 2.2 million, 2.3 million, 2.3 million and 2.1 million respectively. The finale episode aired on January 10, but those ratings have yet to be announced. The average for the 4 episodes that aired, though, is 2.2 million.

Caprica – The final five episodes of this Syfy series, which was canceled by the network aired as a mini-marathon on January 4. The episodes received the following viewership in order of airing: 528,000, 671,000, 703,000, 618,000 and 782,000 for a very low average of 660,000 viewers overall.

Pretty Little Liars – The ABC Family Channel series returned with new episodes on January 4, earning 4.2 million viewers. Another new episode aired on January 10, but the ratings numbers have yet to be announced for that episode. Another new episode will air on the network at 8 PM tomorrow (January 17).

Greek – This series, now in its final season, also returned to the ABC Family Channel on January 4, garnering 1.2 million viewers. A new episode also aired on January 10, but those ratings are not available either. The next new episode will air at 9 PM tomorrow night (January 17).

Southland – The series returned with new episodes on TNT on January 4 with another new episode on January 11; however, ratings have yet to be announced for either episode.

Primeval – This popular UK series returned to American TV screens via BBC America on January 1, earning 5.3 million viewers. The series also aired new episodes on January 8 and 15, but those ratings numbers have yet to be released. Another new episode will air on January 22.

Merlin – This Syfy series returned with new episodes on January 7, getting 1.3 million viewers. A new episode also aired on January 14, but those numbers have yet to be announced. Another new episode will air on January 21.
