NBC should know that it takes awhile for a show to gather a following. The season finale of The Event should have shown the exceutives that they should show reruns of the show and watch the the numbers pick up. The finale will spread by word of mouth only because it was fantastic!
Unfortuantely, even with the slight up-tick in the ratings for the finale of The Event, it just wasn’t enough for NBC to sink more money into a show that just never got off the ground. The ratings and demo numbers just couldn’t justify airing it anymore be it in summer reruns or in the fall. It isn’t fair to the fans, I know (and believe me, I have been there before with countless other favorite, but under-appreciated and overlooked shows), but that is the nature of the business – thin out the herd with the shows that under-perform and replace them. In the long run it’s all about how much money the networks can make for the advertisers and if a particular show doesn’t bring in enough viewers, then they have to pull it. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule – Fringe and Chuck, for example – but these shows had proven track records with devoted fans – I’m afraid The Event just never reached that level. I have heard, though, that the people behind the show are trying to shop it around to another network – whether that will work or not is hard to say.
