Hey All,

Today’s news isn’t very long, but there are some interesting things to share with everyone. Let’s get into it then:

TELEVISION

Actor Mark Moses (Desperate Housewives) will guest star in Covert Affairs as a NASA employee who never quite made it to space and becomes suspected of leaking confidential information. The show returns to the USA Network starting June 7. (Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide)

Actress Camilla Luddington (the Lifetime movie William and Kate) has landed a major recurring role in Californication. She will appear in an 8-episode arc, playing a nanny who gets fired from her job and comes to work for Charlie and Marcy. (Deadline)

CBS has decided not to renew its deal with the Hallmark Hall of Fame after 16 years of airing their movies. It seems low ratings are to blame. There are no details on whether this once prestigious series of yearly movies will be shopped around to another network or not. (Deadline)

Actor Colin Hanks (Roswell, The Good Guys and Mad Men) is joining the cast of Dexter for a major arc in the new season. The specifics of his role are being kept under tight wraps, though. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Actors Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) Bryan Batt (Mad Men) will guest star in an upcoming episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Pasdar will play a wine collector named Mason Kent while Batt will portray a premiere wine sommelier. The episode is expected to air on May 22. (TV Guide)

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Actor Charles S. Dutton (Roc) is the first actor to be cast in the FX drama pilot Powers, which is based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The project is a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common and centers on two detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, in a Homicide department that deals with cases involving “powers” (people with superpowers). Dutton will play Captain Cross, the head of the department. Powers is one of two drama pilots FX is eying for an early January launch. (Deadline)

Q&A SECTION (with Matt Roush at TV Guide)

Question: I am one of your fans, both online and in TV Guide Magazine. I’ve been wondering how I could find out when some of my favorite “summer” shows would be coming back, and then realized I could “Ask Matt.” So … do you know when Rizzoli & Isles, Burn Notice, The Glades, Fairly Legal and White Collar will return? Also, I was distressed to read in your Q&A column that Lie to Me and Human Target might not be renewed. Is that true? I’m so sad, since I think Human Target is a perfect role for Mark Valley. I loved him on Boston Legal and Fringe, but this role seems tailor-made for him. — Kathy

Matt Roush: Well, since you asked so nicely, how can I say no? Keep an eye out for TV Guide Magazine’s summer preview issue in a few weeks, where we’ll lay out the torrent of summer programming that will keep us busy until fall. Rizzoli & Isles will return July 11, paired once again with TNT’s breakout hit The Closer. USA’s Burn Notice is back June 23, and White Collar is back June 7, paired with the second season of Covert Affairs. The Glades returns June 5 on A&E. But Fairly Legal, which ended its first season recently and just got renewed for a second season, isn’t part of the summer fun. Look for it sometime in 2012. And regarding Lie to Me and Human Target: We’ll just have to wait until the network upfronts next week to see what Fox has planned for next season. I’m hoping at least one of these shows is back, even if it’s as a midseason backup.

That’s it. Enjoy!

It’s that time of year again: Season Finales

Each week in May, I will provide a reminder of all the season finales that will be airing that week. Make sure to mark your calendars so you don’t miss any of the big events.

For the week of May 9, the finales of The Vampire Diaries and Nikita will air on The CW at 8 and 9 PM (respectively) this Thursday (May 12). Meanwhile, the finale of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will air that same night at 10 PM on CBS.

NOTE: The Vampire Diaries was given an early renewal by The CW, but the fate of Nikita’s future still hangs in the balance. An official decision has not been made about whether CSI will return next fall, but all signs seem to point to renewal.

Then the end of an era will come to a close as Smallville will air its two-hour series finale on The CW this Friday (May 13) from 8 to 10 PM. That same night CSI: NY and Blue Bloods will both air their season finales at 9 and 10 PM (respectively) on CBS.

NOTE: Both CBS shows are considered “on the bubble” and may or may not return for new seasons this fall.

Over on Sunday night (May 15), the two-hour season finale of Desperate Housewives will air on ABC starting at 9 PM.

NOTE: While an official announcement has yet to be made by ABC regarding their long-running nighttime soap, it will most likely be back next season.

Mark your calendars!

Priest

Last month at the annual Wonder Con in San Francisco the creator, director and some of the cast of the upcoming box office movie Priest – which opens in theatres this Friday, May 13 – gathered to participate in a roundtable interview, sharing their experiences on the film and the creative process involved in bringing the story to life.

The interviews started out with the creator – graphic novelist Min-Woo Hyung – who, flanked by his two interpreters – explained that he “couldn’t believe it when (he) was approached about (hiss novel being made into a movie,” including “it wasn’t real” to him until he saw it firsthand. And while the finished product was different from the novel, which worried him at first, he was relieved when he saw how the film turned out.

The graphic novel Priest, published by Tokyopop is a manhwa – aka a Korean comic – created by Hyung which fuses the Western genre with supernatural horror and dark fantasy themes. It is most notable for its unusual, angular art style. The basic premise of the comic is telling the story of humanity’s battle against 12 fallen angels, spanning three distinct time periods: modern times, the Crusades and the Wild West with the primary focus being on the latter.

Meanwhile, the film version is set in an alternate world where humanity and vampires have warred for centuries. After the last Vampire War, a veteran Warrior Priest – portrayed by actor Paul Bettany – lives in obscurity with other humans inside one of the Church’s walled cities. But, when his niece – actress Lily Collins – is kidnapped by vampires, he breaks his vows to hunt them down.

For Bettany, the draw to work with director Scott Stewart was strong (as they worked together on the film Legion) and it was a challenge to play a character of such depth and physicality. In regards to the heavy action and fighting involved in the film Bettany said, “it was a really great working experience even (on) the days (where) I got injured”. He further explained that he fell on a de-acceleration line, which was quite painful; but he did “as many stunts as insurance would allow” him to do.

As for relative newcomer Collins – who is the daughter of Genesis front man Phil Collins – it “was daunting to be in a project with such a huge following,” but she rose to the challenge of playing a character (the kidnapped niece of the Warrior Priest) that was specifically created for the movie. It was joked about during the interview that she has been nicknamed “the screamer” because of all the screaming her character does throughout the movie, but she was quick to point out that while she “starts (out) as a damsel in distress, she has Priest blood in her, allowing her to be “kick ass” as the movie draws to a conclusion.

The Warrior Priest is not alone in his hunt for his niece, as he is joined by a former Warrior Priestess – actress Maggie Q from the television series Nikita – and his niece’s boyfriend – actor Cam Gigandet – who is a sheriff of the wasteland outside the Church’s city walls. While Maggie Q was not part of the roundtable, Gigandet was there. He explained that his character is “inexperienced when it comes to fighting vampires” but he and the Priest set out “to save the day”. When asked about being in another vampire film (he starred as James in the worldwide phenomenon film Twilight), he simply stated “everything is different about this project” and that Twilight “has opened so many doors” for him, making him very grateful.

To finish up the interview, director Stewart shared how challenging it was to design a “whole world” from that of the story of Priest and to take a much more “hands-on approach” with storyboarding and working with a large scope, landscape movie. And while he joked that it was “horrible” to work with Bettany again he actually gushed over how Paul has a “contemporary face,” making him a perfect fit to the Priest character.

You can judge for yourself when Priest opens in theatres this Friday, May 13. Check out the film’s official website for more details.
