Hey All,

There wasn’t very much news to share for today, but there were a few casting tidbits.

TELEVISION

Actor Jason Gedrick (last seen on Desperate Housewives) will appear in a 3-episode arc on the new USA Network series Necessary Roughness. He will play Dr. J.D. Aldrigde, Dani’s (Callie Thorne) former grad school professor who unexpectedly falls back into her life. But Aldridge will do more than just woo Dani; he’ll also butt heads with Matt (Marc Blucas), her onetime fling and obvious soulmate. (Megan Masters at TV Line)

Actor Robbie Amell (How I Met Your Mother and True Jackson, VP) will have a recurring role on the new fall soap Revenge that debuts on ABC on September 21 at 10 PM. He will play Adam, a wealthy lad on track to attend Yale who becomes involved in a messy love triangle with rich girl Charlotte Grayson (Christa B. Allen) and blue-collar boy Declan Porter (Connor Paolo). (Megan Masters at TV Line)

It looks like actress Marg Helgenberger will finish her 11 season run on the CBS juggernaut series CSI this January. (Lesley Goldberg at The Hollywood Reporter)

Actress Lara Pulver (Sookie’s fairy godmother on True Blood) has been cast in the role of Irene Adler in “A Scandal In Belgravia”, the first episode of the second season of the BBC mini-series Sherlock. The character is famously a romantic interest for Holmes. The season is scheduled to premiere around October/November. (Den of Geek and Dark Horizons)

That’s it. Enjoy!

One of the new fall shows that premiered at Comic Con last week in San Diego was the ABC series Once Upon a Time, which is the fairy tale based story from Executive Producers-Writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (of Lost fame).

Members of the cast who took part in the panel were Josh Dallas (Prince Charming), Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White), Robert Carlyle (Rumpelstiltskin), Lana Parrilla (The Evil Queen) and Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan).

Before the cast and creative team took the stage for a short Q&A with a packed audience, Damon Lindelof (Executive Producer of Lost) made a short introduction, leading into the screening of the pilot of Once Upon a Time.

I’m pleased to say that the audience genuinely seemed to like the pilot as it received a rousing round of applause after the screening completed; and as Damon returned to the stage to introduce the panelists, the applause continued with cast and creative team being welcomed with open arms by the audience.

Edward and Adam were then asked if they could talk about the origin of Once Upon a Time. They shared that, “it probably started about eight years ago (when we) finished working on (the TV show) Felicity. Coming off that, our agents asked us what kind of show (we would) like to do now and we kinda started thinking about fairy tales and why we like them…we kept talking about (it, but) there was one big problem: we had no idea how to tell the story. Cut to Lost where we were very lucky to work with Damon who helped us out of an eight-year writers’ block on how to tell the story by virtue of us going to him and crying on his couch that we had no ideas left; and now you see what happened (referencing our watching the pilot).”

Then Ginnifer was asked what made her take the role of Snow White after her involvement in a very successful show (for those who don’t know Ginnifer was a regular on Big Love). She shared that, “I was reading TV scripts because I understood that is where all the great writers have gone (then) I got a phone call that Eddy and Adam were offering me the role of Snow White. I said to my agent ‘I’ll take it’ and he said you need to read it and I said ‘No! Seriously, I’ll take it!’ I did read it that night, again and again and again. I was up all night until I knew my manager was up so I could tell him that I was taking the job. It really didn’t take much – I read it and I was inspired to tell this story and we pray for many years that (we can continue to tell the story). There is (really) nothing else like it on television.”

Jennifer Morrison (Photo Credit: Jennifer Schadel)

Then Jennifer was asked how she felt about playing just the role of Emma when all the other actors on the show have dual roles. She joked, “I’m a little jealous, as it seems fun to be in the pretty costumes, but it’s exciting that (Eddy and Adam) created a character that is brand new, a new fairy tale character. It’s this incredible adventure of letting Eddy and Adam write this incredible stuff and hope that we do it justice.”

Lana was asked what lured her to this project, sharing that “everyone wants to play Snow White, but I always wanted to play someone (a little) bad. When I read the script, I fell in love with it instantly. I couldn’t believe I was up for something like this. I was honored to be part of this project. I read once for Eddy and Adam and they said “thank you very much” and I thought ‘sh*t, I missed that one’. But I didn’t and I am very honored to be here and (to be) working with this cast.”

Then for Josh, he was asked what it is like when people ask him what he is working on; and he answered, “it’s amazing to play (this) part and play that kind of icon. As an actor, you don’t think about playing Prince Charming, you’re playing a man with issues and problems and situations like everyone else.”

Robert Carlyle and Lana Parrilla (Photo Credit: Rueben)

As for Robert, he was asked what it was like to play two different characters. He shared that “it’s fantastic. It’s very theatrical and (it) takes me back to my days in theatre, strangely enough.”

Because of the influence working on Lost had for the executive producers, viewers can be prepared for references to Lost; but unlike the myriad of mysteries that went left unanswered on that drama, Eddy and Adam “hope there will be a balance, but we do want this show to be one that you can sit and watch and relax. But if you are looking (closely), we are putting things there that you will find (that will be reminiscent of Lost). You can examine (the show closely like with Lost) if you want or just watch it (and enjoy it)”.

Make sure to tune in to ABC on October 23 at 8 PM for the debut of Once Upon a Time and judge for yourself.

Bell Media, Canada’s premier multi-media company, will bring the new drama Highland Gardens to Canadian viewers at some soon point (and hopefully to US viewers when possible), as it starts production on the new series today.

The premise of Highland Gardens is set in and around an apartment-style hotel that draws aspiring performers from Canada, the U.S. and all over the world. The show is a no-holds-barred, character-driven relationship drama that follows the exploits of six young hopefuls in search of celluloid and stardom in Hollywood. Full of heart-rending moments, salacious temptations and hilarious escapades, the show’s coming-of-age dwellers grapple with life’s defining moments as they deal with the unreality of the show-biz industry. Whether they stay a week, a month, or 40 years, the denizens of Highland Gardens provide something to each other that’s in short supply elsewhere in Hollywood: support.

The ensemble drama stars the following:

Joe Dinicol (Murdoch Mysteries and the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) is “nice-guy” Nick, a struggling stand-up comedian from Edmonton who is always the best friend and never the boyfriend;

Andra Fuller (The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Entourage) is Kaldrick, the extremely successful Hip-Hop artist hailing from the streets of Oakland, California;

Jonathan Patrick Moore (the Australian shows Neighbours and All Saints) is Connor, a break-out Australian with drop-dead good looks and a dark past;

Chelan Simmons (Kyle XY) is Alicia, a sensitive, aspiring dancer from Regina who will do whatever it takes to make ends meet;

Jewel Staite (Firefly and Stargate Atlantis) is the street-smart Haligonian Raquel, who’s frightened of becoming yesterday’s news;

Cassie Steele (Degrassi and Relic Hunter) is Abby, the naïve Toronto actor who is ready to fight to get to the top; and,

Benjamin Charles Watson (The Listener) is Tariq, the confident and talented African-Canadian hip-hop artist with a secret on the down low.

The one-hour, six-part scripted series begins shooting in Toronto today before continuing in Hollywood this fall. The show will be executive produced by Linda Schuyler (Degrassi and Instant Star), Stephen Stohn (Degrassi and Instant Star) and Martin Gero (Bored to Death).

Hey All,

Happy Over the Hump Day! Here are the news items for today:

TELEVISION

Actress/comedian Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up and the documentary Paper Heart) has been cast as a new regular on the FOX medical drama House next season. She will play a new member of Dr. Gregory House’s (Hugh Laurie) diagnostics team at Princeton-Plainsboro. (Deadline)

Actress Sarah Hagan (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Freaks and Geeks) has booked a recurring role on 90210, where she will play Alana, one of Naomi’s new sorority sisters at California University. The character is described as a born leader who proudly flaunts her extensive vocabulary and book smarts. 90210 returns for its fourth season on September 13 on the CW. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Up-and-coming actress Brittany Belt (who has had roles in The Ex List and Castle) will have a recurring role on the NBC series Parenthood, playing one of Haddie’s (Sarah Ramos) best friends since 7th grade. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Another actor has been added to the cast for season 2 of Game of Thrones when it returns sometime next year on HBO. German actor Tom Wlaschiha has landed the role of Jaqen, one of the criminals being transported along with Arya (Maisie Williams) to The Wall. (James Hibberd at Entertainment Weekly)

BOX OFFICE NEWS

Actor Laurence Fishburne will appear as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White in the Superman reboot Man of Steel, that stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. The film is slated for a June 2013 release. (Entertainment Weekly)

Writer Melisa Wallack, (who wrote the upcoming Snow White film from Relativity) will write the film adaptation of the cult comic Emily the Strange, which was created in the early 1990’s by skateboarder Rob Reger. The character originally appeared on stickers and clothing before moving to comic books in 2005. The film will serve as the origin story of the gothic and odd young lady who owns four mysterious cats and is able to fuse technology and imagination. Actress Chloe Moretz remains attached to star in the lead role. (Heat Vision and Dark Horizons)

Q&A SECTION (with Michael Ausiello at TV Line and Adam Bryan and Natalie Abrams at TV Guide)

Question: Any scoops about the new NCIS season? I am dying to know if there’s something new, something big! — Victoria

Ausiello: Is a new agent big enough for you? Though he won’t be a series regular, the show is adding to the roster a new recurring character, a potentially deadly Fed named Stratton.

Question: I just started watching Chuck this summer and love it and am really sad that will be the final season. Speaking of which, it really sucks that there will only be 13 episodes. Any chance TPTB will give them at least a few more episodes? —Sarah

Ausiello: Let me just put this out there: A back-nine pickup would bring the show’s total episode haul to a clean 100, the traditional threshold for syndication. Let me also put this out there: NBC president Robert Greenblatt told me on Monday that it’s probably not going to happen. “[The 13-episode order] is pretty much set in stone,” he maintained. “They’re designing the season to [build toward] a series finale.”

Question: How does the Buy More fit into this season’s Chuck? —Gabe

Ausiello: Chuck’s now the owner, which means “when his spy agency isn’t doing well, the Buy More might be the only profit center for his company,” explains exec producer Chris Fedak. “It’s important that the Buy More does well, so Chuck’s trying to figure out a way to make it into a successful store.” His first priority: Creating an awesome promotional campaign. “There’s a new commercial with the face of the Buy More, Captain Awesome,” says Fedak. “He’s the most successful salesman Chuck knows.” He’s certainly better than the store’s previous spokesmodel, as viewers will discover firsthand. Reveals Fedak: “We see the original Buy More commercial that Big Mike starred in back in 1981.”

Question: I’ve heard Castle’s new season will feature a superhero episode. What can you tell me about it? —Luke

ADAM: I can tell you that the case involves a young criminal justice student who spends his nights prowling the streets as a masked, sword-wielding vigilante named the Lone Vengeance.

Question: Got any scoop on the final season of Chuck? — Matt

NATALIE: The Buy More is going through a few more changes this season. Now that Chuck’s private spy agency, Carmichael Industries, owns Nerd Herd central, Captain Awesome will become the face of the company, says portrayer Ryan McPartlin. (Can I please have a copy of the first Buy More magazine with his pretty mug on it?) “He’s going to be like the Tony Robbins of the Buy More,” McPartlin says, adding that Awesome won’t be quitting his day job as a doctor. “The fact that Ellie and Awesome know about the spy world, it’ll be like the A-Team and we’ll help out, but only when we’re absolutely needed because of the baby.”

That’s it. Enjoy!
