In celebration of the past year in the worlds of television, movies, music and books, the year-end articles that I will be posting over the course of the next week will highlight the best (and in some instances the worst) that each of these entertainment genres had to offer those of us who partake in the enjoyment each medium provides.

But, much like each year, I want to take a moment to look back – selfish though it may be – on some of my personal goals for the year. It was my hope to read 20 books this year, and while I didn’t quite manage that, I did read 18. One of the more interesting books that I read was the debut novel of a new book series by authors J. Gabriel Gates and Charlene Keel called “Dark Territory”. I also fell in love with the fairies trilogy by Carrie Jones, the shape shifter trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater and the Montana-themed romance series by R. C. Ryan. I also highly recommend the independent release by (Ms.) Chris Culler called “Giving Good Hollywood”.

I also had the great opportunity to attend a lot of great TV-related events, including Comic Con in July, the annual Paley Fest in March and the Paley Preview Parties in September. As part of my press ‘duties’ I also attended Wonder Con in April and had the chance to visit the sets of the TV shows The Protector, Pretty Little Liars and the new 2012 summer series Perception.

With that being said, tomorrow I will take a look at the highlights for the year that was – 2011 – starting with the best (and worst) of television.

NOTE: I apologize in advance for any omissions, spelling errors or oversights I may have made, but I don’t apologize for any of the choices I made.

Hey All,

Here are the news items for today:

TELEVISION

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren will guest star in the January 17 episode of Glee, but in a twist she will be heard but not seen. She will provide the “inner voice” of a character who is going nameless right now. This could potentially be a recurring thing too if all goes well. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

The Hobbit Teaser Trailer Is Out

Q&A SECTION (with Adam Bryant and Natalie Abrams from TV Guide and Michael Ausiello from TV Line)

Question: Please tell me Castle and Beckett will still be in a good place when the show returns in January? —Anna

ADAM: They’ll be in a good place, but maybe not for long. When a dead woman ends up in the mayor’s car, Beckett will find herself afraid of pursuing the most obvious suspect. “The stakes are enormous,” creator Andrew W. Marlowe tells us. “If something happens to the mayor, Castle is not going to be able to continue his partnership with Beckett. How do you deal with an investigation when you’re compromised because of the way you feel?”

Question: So Rebecca’s coming back on The Vampire Diaries? Please tell me that doesn’t mean Elena is in danger! — Hayley

ADAM: Well, somebody is in danger. Big danger. (I mean, isn’t someone always on this show?) “There is definitely a major character whose fate is looking bleak,” executive producer Julie Plec tells us. But not, like, Aunt Jenna bleak, right? “[He or she] may not come out the other side of a terrible life-or-death situation,” Plec teases. Eek! Any guesses?

Question: Anything good happening on Rizzoli & Isles? —Sammy

NATALIE: The most difficult part of being a cop is putting those you love in the way of potential harm. The ladies will learn this the hard way when two family members are the victims of a hit-and-run as well as a shooting.

Question: Is there any hope for Adam and Diana on The Secret Circle? —Jaime

NATALIE: Sorry to break it to you, Jaime, but Diana is moving on. “She’s going to be struggling for a bit,” executive producer Andrew Miller says, “but you can’t keep that girl away from love because she’s too amazing, so there will be love for Diana in this half of the season. It’ll just come from an unexpected place.”

Question: How about some scoop on Shaw’s return to Chuck this Friday? —Joel

Ausiello: How about it, indeed! “We’ll realize that Decker and his plan has all been manipulated by Daniel Shaw from his [prison] cell,” reveals EP Chris Fedak. “We wanted to do a monster story. We wanted to do a Christmas story. Christmas is such a haunted holiday, like in the Charles Dickens tradition. So when we started thinking about this year’s Christmas story, we thought, ‘Let’s bring back a monster from our past.’ At the end of Season 3, Brandon [Routh] was such a good ‘Mwahaha’ bad guy. I was like, “We gotta bring back the ‘Mwahaha.’” Fedak calls the hour “one of our most crazy, intense” episodes ever, adding, “It’s Daniel Shaw haunting Sarah Walker. Brandon came back, and he was great. He just plays an icy killer like nobody else.”

Question: Can you tell me something about Episode 200 of NCIS? —Bianca

Ausiello: Sadly, I can’t. That information is under lock and key. I can, however, tell you that Sarah Jane Morris isn’t the only NCIS alum returning in the episode airing Jan. 3. CBS confirms that Scott Wolf will also be back, reprising his role as Agent Stratton. “Stratton intends to finish what he started and influence some unexpected lives in the process,” teases exec producer Gary Glasberg, “including Gibbs’.”

Question: Just about a month until Justified is back… and I can hardly wait! Any scoop? Please? —Michele

Ausiello: File this under “W” for “WTF?!?!?!” Early into Season 3, Boyd is desperately trying to stay in prison and Raylan is desperately trying to get him out.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Doctor Who Christmas Movie

The Doctor Who Christmas special entitled “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe” will air on Christmas Day at 7 PM on BBC America.

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell (Claire Skinner) comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home. He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish. Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children – Lily (Holly Earl) and Cyril (Maurice Cole) – for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever. The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker (Matt Smith as The Doctor, of course) whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true.

Here is a trailer for The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.
