Hey All,

It’s another slow news day, but here are the few items to share:

TELEVISION

Actress Rebecca Field (October Road) has joined the upcoming Lifetime drama A Client List as a series regular. She will play Lacey, the best friend since high school of Riley (Jennifer Love Hewitt). (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

It has been confirmed: The companions’ time is almost up on Doctor Who. Word had leaked awhile back that Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) would not be the Doctor’s companions, but it was just a matter of when this “official” split would take place. Amy and Rory will complete their time with the Doctor during the next new season which is set to air in the Fall of 2012. There is no word on whether River Song (Alex Kingston) – who was revealed to be the daughter of Amy and Rory – will also discontinue being a part of the series. (Film Thrasher)

Actress Alicia Silverstone will appear in the new ABC comedy Suburgatory for a multi-episode arc, reuniting with her former on-screen Clueless co-star Jeremy Sisto. She will play Eden, a possible love interest for Sisto’s character, George. (TV Line and TV Guide)

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

A drama series adaptation of the 2010 Australian film Animal Kingdom has landed at Showtime. The project is a crime drama exploring the tense battle between a criminal family and the police, and the ordinary lives caught in the middle. The 2010 movie was inspired by Melbourne’s infamous Pettingill crime family headed by matriarch Kath Pettingill. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

FX has given a pilot order a drama set in the early 1980s called The Americans. The series would center on the complex marriage between Phillip and Elizabeth Jennings, who work undercover for the Soviet Union during a time of heightened tensions in the Cold War, hiding their true identities even to their two children. The relationship is tested as Phillip begins to gain an affinity for the American way of life. (Cynthia Littleton at Variety)

BOX OFFICE NEWS

Actress Reese Witherspoon will star in the upcoming box office film The Devil’s Knot, which is about the West Memphis 3, playing Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murder victims, who initially believes the trio murdered her son, but is eventually persuaded the three suspects are innocent and wrongly accused. (Mike Fleming at Deadline)

Here is the next list of modern-day writers who, in their own way, have paid homage to Jane Austen’s legendary stories. Each of these authors have written three or four books either inspired by Austen’s characters or based on the author herself.

They appear in alphabetical order:

An Assembly Such as This by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
An Assembly Such as This: A Novel Of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman
Released on May 30, 2006

This book retells the now iconic story of Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Fitzwilliam Darcy as he visits Netherfield with his good friend Charles Bingley and his sisters. The austere Darcy takes life very seriously, and is at a loss as to how he became friends with the amicable Bingley. Darcy has escaped many marriage-minded mothers and their daughters, which is why he initially disdains the Bennet family. Once he gets to know Elizabeth, however, he realizes his mistake, but his attempts to apologize to her only make him act even more awkwardly in her presence.

Duty and Desire by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
Duty and Desire: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentlemen
Released on October 3, 2006

This book has Darcy wrestling with his infatuation with Elizabeth Bennet. While Darcy exhibits the class snobbery and noblesse oblige readers expect of him, he also has a purpose: Darcy decides he must find another woman “of his own station as beautiful and blessed with wit as Elizabeth Bennet, whose charms would banish her from his mind and displace her in his heart.” While searching for this woman, Darcy looks after his sister, Georgiana, who is emerging from a long depression.

These Three Remain by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
These Three Remain: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman
Released on January 2, 2007

The storied romance of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet reaches its conclusion. While visiting his aunt’s estate, Fitzwilliam continues alternately courting his beloved Elizabeth and trying to crimp his longing for her. He finally musters his courage and, in an arrogant, bumbling way, proposes marriage. He returns to London in defeat, but realizes, after some time and distance, that her rejection has provided him with the opportunity to become a better man. Months later, a fortuitous meeting with Elizabeth offers them the chance to renew their friendship and for Fitzwilliam to prove he has changed for the better. But just as Fitzwilliam is making headway, George Wickham, his smarmy nemesis, appears and threatens to undo everything.

Young Master Darcy by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
Young Master Darcy: A Lesson in Honour
Released on December 1, 2010

It is Christmas, 1797, and thirteen year-old Master Fitzwilliam Darcy is returning from his first term at Eton in full anticipation of the holidays. Soon, he and his family will leave their fashionable London home for Pemberley, their Derbyshire estate, to prepare for the arrival of his irrepressible cousin Richard and the rest of his Matlock relations. But when Darcy arrives in London, he learns that his mother is ill. Her doctor’s prognosis is dire–Lady Anne cannot survive another year! As Christmas approaches, Darcy is torn between his parents’ struggles to carry on and the attraction of an unusual company of players in Lambton for the holidays. With the arrival of Richard and his family, he must try to satisfy the expectations of all and, in doing so, learn what it means to be a
Darcy.

Lydia Bennet's Story by Jane Odiwe

JANE ODIWE
Lydia Bennet’s Story: A Sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
Released on December 1, 2007

This book sees the world through Lydia’s eyes where pleasure and marriage are the only pursuits. Lydia’s dream of following the regiment to the fashionable resort of Brighton comes true, she is soon the darling of all the officers and tempted not only by a handsome royal dragoon, but drawn to the irresistible charms of one already well known to her. But the road to matrimony is fraught with difficulties and even when she is convinced that she has met the man of her dreams, she quickly discovers that her hero is not the man she believes him to be. Before long his reputation has her running back to Hertfordshire to be reunited with Bennets, Bingleys and Darcys, meeting once again for a grand ball at Netherfield Park. Will she resolve her problems to find happiness or will the shocking truth about her husband cause the greatest scandal of all?

Willoughby's Return by Jane Odiwe

JANE ODIWE
Willoughby’s Return
Released on November 1, 2009

Odiwe’s sequel to Sense and Sensibility is best at recalling Austen’s descriptive abilities, but falls short in its treatment of Austen’s beloved characters. Three years after Marianne and Col. William Brandon get married, they’re still unable to discuss two critical and intertwined issues: namely, that Marianne feels jealous of William’s ward, Eliza, the illegitimate daughter of his first love; and the reappearance of Eliza’s father, John Willoughby, who was once Marianne’s love. Matters are complicated by the growing affection between Marianne’s sister, Margaret, and William’s nephew Henry, a developing relationship that serves as a stand-in for the original book’s. As their unshared feelings fester, distance grows between Marianne and William; Odiwe nods occasionally to the inequality between marriage partners, which allows the man to carry on much as he did prior to marriage, an issue that Austen herself would likely tackle; unfortunately, it’s hard to maintain suspense when the central plot conflict can be cleared up with a five-minute conversation.

Mr. Darcy's Secret by Jane Odiwe

JANE ODIWE
Mr. Darcy’s Secret
Released on February 1, 2011

Caroline Bingley and George Wickham begin to besmirch Darcy’s good name and sow seeds of discontent, but while Darcy and Elizabeth are already at odds, revelations of past conduct emerge that threaten to destroy their happiness.

Excessively Diverted by Juliette Shapiro

JULIETTE SHAPIRO
Excessively Diverted: The Sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
Released in September 2002

Newlyweds Mr and Mrs Fitzwilliam Darcy begin their married life at Pemberley quite blissfully but it is not long before the tranquillity they relish is cut short by a series of traumas. The formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh makes little attempt to hide her distain for her nephew’s wife. She is joined by Caroline Bingley, as sharp tongued and resentful as ever, in the shared amusement of criticising Elizabeth. But the new mistress of Pemberley soon has more pressing matters on her mind, the fact that she is carrying the Darcy heir being the most pleasant of them. The sudden return of her sister Lydia brings cause for concern. Alarming reports of a seduction, blackmail and the need to keep news of another’s confinement secret dampen even Elizabeth’s notoriously high spirits and Darcy shows his true character when faced with the most difficult decision of his life. Has he been softened by his love for Elizabeth or is his former remoteness about to be resurrected?

Mr. Darcy's Decision by Juliette Shapiro

JULIETTE SHAPIRO
Mr. Darcy’s Decision: A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice
Released on August 28, 2008

The book finds the newlyweds in their tumultuous first year of married life at Pemberley, entrenched in the frivolous social pressures of their prying friends and family. While the sharp-tongued duo of Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Caroline Bingley criticizes Elizabeth, the new Mrs. Darcy has a happier matter on her mind—the fact that she is carrying the next Darcy heir. But when the sudden and unexpected return of Elizabeth’s sister Lydia brings alarming reports of seduction and blackmail that threaten the newlyweds’ life together, Mr. Darcy is forced to make the most difficult decision of his lifetime.

Ask Jane Austen by Juliette Shapiro

JULIETTE SHAPIRO
Ask Jane Austen
Released on October 31, 2008

The modern day reader frequently remarks upon the uncanny manner, despite changes in the morals and mores of society, in which her acute observations seemed to traverse time and apply in so many ways to us today. So, what if you could confide in Jane Austen, seek her advice? This book allows you to do just that. The answers herein come from Austen’s most famous works: “Sense and Sensibility,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “Mansfield Park,” “Emma,” “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion.”

Sandition by Juliette Shapiro

JULIETTE SHAPIRO
Sanditon: Jane Austen’s Unfinished Masterpiece Completed
Released on March 1, 2009

Had Jane Austen lived to complete Sanditon, it would have been as treasured as her other novels. In the half-finished masterpiece, Austen fashions one of her classic heroines—Charlotte Heywood. The surviving fragment also sets the story well on its path as Charlotte begins an adventure to Sanditon where a full cast of characters becomes intertwined in various intrigues. At first, Charlotte finds amusement enough standing at her ample Venetian window looking over the placid seafront. However, before long, Charlotte discovers that scandals abound. She becomes captivated by the romance of the seaside lifestyle. But is the town of Sanditon truly a haven and will Charlotte find happiness there?

Hey All,

Here are the news items, few though they may be, for today:

TELEVISION

Actor Colin Egglesfield (All My Children and a recurring role on Rizzoli & Isles) has landed a series regular role on the upcoming drama series The Client List from Lifetime. The series is based on the network’s 2010 original movie, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as a Texas housewife who, after being deserted by her husband, takes a job at a seemingly traditional day spa in a neighboring town but realizes that the parlor offers way more than massages and ends up partnering with the parlor’s feisty and disorganized owner to run the business. Egglesfield will play a new character, Hewitt’s brother-in-law. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

Legendary actress Jane Fonda has joined the cast of the still as-yet untitled new HBO/Aaron Sorkin drama that is set behind the scenes at a fictional cable news network and centers on an anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski) and their boss (Law & Order‘s Sam Waterston). Fonda will have a recurring role in the series, her first major TV gig, playing Leona Lansing, the CEO of the cable news network’s parent company. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Actor Desmond Harrington (Dexter) will appear in the season premiere of Justified when it airs next month. Apparently the role he will be playing is top secret, but it is said that his character “is a total badass boasting a deep Southern accent and ties to Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns), who is back in a big way this winter. (Megan Masters at TV Line)

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

It looks like the USA Network is developing a drama series about Kate Warne, who was the U.S’ first female detective who also worked as a spy for the Union government during the Civil War. The project is described as stylized with a contemporary feel. In 1856, Warne became America’s first female detective when she joined the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency. Along with Allan Pinkerton, Warne did work for the Union government. She was part of the Pinkerton team that uncovered a plot to assassinate President-elect Abraham Lincoln, events that will be at the center of the pilot script. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

HBO has bought Beat The Reaper, a drama series project that will be executive produced by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. The project is based on the debut book by physician and novelist Josh Bazell. It is a criminal, medical thriller about a young ER doctor whose life is upended when a patient comes through his ward that recognizes the internist from his old life — when he used to work for a notorious crime family. As his past comes crashing back and his enemies from his old life try to destroy him, he tries to hold his new life together while discovering that everything he knew about his past may have been wrong. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

That’s it. Enjoy!

Q&A SECTION (with Adam Bryant and Natalie Abrams at TV Guide and Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Question: Can you give me some NCIS scoop to tide me over until January? — Annie

ADAM: New year, new bad guy. Look for the show to introduce a recurring villain described as a chameleonic one-man crime syndicate. He’s athletic, meticulous, extremely smart and deft at quickly changing his appearance.

Question: Got any scoop on Nikita? — Hector

NATALIE: When Nikita runs into her old rehab sponsor, she’ll finally learn the truth about the night that she killed a cop while hopped up on drugs. There were actually two cops on the scene, but someone from Division, her future employer, tidied up the witness list by, um, killing the other. [Insert ominous music here.]

Question: I can’t wait for Justified to come back. How will Raylan be affected by Winona’s pregnancy? — Gina

ADAM: Impending fatherhood and Raylan’s dangerous line of work aren’t exactly compatible. “It gives you pause [about] the decisions you’re making and how you’re living your life,” Timothy Olyphant tells us. “It just makes everything a little deeper, more important.” It sounds like this self-reflection will come in handy, given how much more treacherous this season will be. “We’re going to start taking people out this year,” Olyphant says. “We get right to some bullets flying. People get hurt.”

Question: Switched at Birth scoop, please! —Mena

Ausiello: When Switched at Birth‘s Katie Leclerc told us at the American Music Awards last month that “Wilke [is still] in the mix” for Daphne’s affections, she was downplaying things. We just screened the season 1.5 premiere (airing Jan. 3) and those two have quite the heart-to-heart on the pier.

Question: Chuck me! —Jeremy

Ausiello: Rebecca Romijn’s barbaric CIA agent — who debuts in this Friday’s episode — used to be a man! No, the actress isn’t playing another transgender character (as she did on Ugly Betty). Allow Chuck exec producer Chris Fedak to explain: “We created a character originally that was going to be a man. Kind of an ominous, scary figure with a penchant for torture, which he considers his art form. But then when we started thinking about it, I was like, “What if Rebecca Romijn was this guy? That would be scary and sexy… She was game for it, and she also has a great sense of humor.”

Question: Been following you for years – that alone makes me deserving of you fulfilling my every fantasy. Or at least some Hart of Dixie scoop. —Britta

Ausiello: Let’s stick with the scoop, Britta. Your other fantasies scare me. Wade/Zoe ‘shippers will be sad to hear that the two will soon butt heads again when Zoe discovers that he has started a betting pool based solely on her love life. Elsewhere, Lemon and George are moving full speed ahead with their wedding plans. We’ll see the two taste-testing cakes in an upcoming episode.

Question: Longtime reader, never written in before, but I need some Revenge hints to help me get through the break. Regarding the promo for the next episode, which shows Tyler pointing a gun — any hints as to who he fires at? Does it result in death? Does he even pull the trigger, or is it just one big tease? —Jack

Ausiello: I can’t answer all of your questions. Or, okay, technically, really any of them. But this might tide you over. Gabriel Mann, who plays Nolan, tells TV Line, tongue in cheek, “It probably wasn’t a good idea for [Tyler] to run out of those meds. That’s a little frightening for all of us.” And, perhaps especially, for his own character. “I will tease very, very bad things for him,” he says. “There is a reason you didn’t see him sitting at that table with everyone else.” Yikes! “Our coming back New Year episode,” he adds, “is… oh my God, I wish I could tell you more! I’m so tempted!” Alas, not tempted enough. If he blabbed, he says with a laugh, “I would get revenge’d right off the show!”

Question: I’m intrigued by the theory you guys put out there about Nolan and Emily being half-siblings on Revenge. Any reason to believe it’s actually true? —Michelle

Ausiello: No, but Gabriel Mann’s a fan of the idea. “I love that theory,” he told us. “That’s the thing with Emily and Nolan — and just us as actors — we have so much fun together that if they want to make us like a Luke and Leia situation, we’re so down… We’re like the tectonic twosome of the Hamptons. The two blonde avengers.”

That’s it. Enjoy!
