Once again, it’s been a great summer for TV fans; and the 2013-2014 fall TV season is right around the corner: literally!
Starting this Monday, the majority of the fall programming will start in earnest with both returning favorites coming back on the major networks and a whole slew of new dramas to look forward to seeing.
Let’s take a look at all the great programming that will be on the air next week:
SEPTEMBER 23:
Castle will be back for its fifth season on ABC at 10 PM.
The new drama The Blacklist will debut on NBC at 10 PM
Hostages is the new drama that will debut on CBS at 10 PM
MY RECOMMENDATION: As a long-time Castle fan, I – of course – recommend viewers check out the return of the series to only find out what answer Beckett will give Castle (he did propose after all at the end of last season) but also to learn whether Beckett took that job offer or not. I must also say that based on the charisma level alone of the one and only James Spader, who is the star of the new drama The Blacklist, it is worth checking out of that series too, but I suggest recording that series and watching it at a later time.
SEPTEMBER 24:
There is a lot of programming options this night with TV viewers having a lot from which to choose, including:
Chicago Fire coming back for its second season on NBC at 10 PM
The CBS line-up is filled with the networks top programs, including NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles and Person of Interest at 8, 9 and 10 PM respectively
And, the new dramas Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Lucky 7 both debuting on ABC at 8 and 10 PM respectively
MY RECOMMENDATION: Of course, as a loyal Joss Whedon fan, I highly recommend Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I am also a long-time viewer of the NCIS franchise and Person of Interest is appointment TV even on its new night. I suggest that folks watch S.H.I.E.L.D. and Person of Interest for sure.
SEPTEMBER 25:
The second season of Revolution will start on NBC at 8 PM
Nashville will also be back for its second season on ABC at 10 PM
Meanwhile, the long-running procedurals Criminal Minds and CSI will air their season premieres on CBS at 9 and 10 PM respectively
MY RECOMMENDATION: I really wanted to be a fan of Nashville when it debuted last year, but sadly the series was lackluster at best with a few tiny shining moments despite the great music and I can only hope it has gone through a massive improvement. And, I can say nearly the same thing for Revolution, but I’m willing to go on faith that this show will be better too. I suggest folks record either or both, waiting to see if either has gotten better. I actually look more forward to the return of Arrow on The CW than anything else on Wednesday nights, to be honest.
SEPTEMBER 26:
The NBC dramas Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Parenthood will both be back with new seasons on NBC at 9 PM and 10 PM respectively
While, Elementary will return for its sophomore season on CBS at 10 PM
Over on ABC, Grey’s Anatomy will air its two-hour season premiere on ABC at 9 PM
And, Glee will air its season premiere on FOX at 9 PM
MY RECOMMENDATION: Quite frankly, in my opinion, Thursday night is a crap shoot until the beginning of October when Scandal returns to ABC, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland debuts on ABC, The CW airs its returning drama The Vampire Diaries and the new period piece Reign; but I know that Parenthood is a fan favorite and Elementary is popular with viewers so have fun setting those DVR’s.
SEPTEMBER 27:
New seasons of the relocated Hawaii Five-0 and the returning Blue Bloods will air on CBS at 9 and 10 PM respectively
MY RECOMMENDATION: Fridays will not be complete for me until Grimm is back on the air on NBC and I will give the new NBC reboot of Dracula a try. Otherwise, Friday nights will be pretty bland. Sigh!
SEPTEMBER 29:
Over on the cable network Showtime, Homeland will be back for its third season at 9 PM followed by the new series Masters of Sex at 10 PM
The Good Wife and The Mentalist will air their season premieres on CBS at 9 and 10 PM respectively
ABC will be busy with a recap special “Once Upon a Time: Journey to Neverland” at 7 PM followed by the season premiere of Once Upon a Time at 8 PM; the season premiere of Revenge at 9 PM and the new drama Betrayal at 10 PM
MY RECOMMENDATION: Homeland, of course, is a critically acclaimed and award-winning drama, which I will be recording and watching at another time as my night will be filled with Once Upon a Time and Revenge. Call me a glutton for punishment given that both of these dramas hit snags during their sophomore seasons, but I want to believe that improvements are on the way.
There are plenty other programming options out there, of course, but since I primarily focus on dramas (and only dramas), viewers are on their own to navigate all of the comedies that are set to return or debut. And, of course, there will be more shows coming back or getting their start in October.
Please share what shows you are looking forward to watching next week.
