Q&A SECTION (with Matt Mitovich at TV Line)

Question: Have any scoop on what will be happening with Ryan and Esposito in the beginning of Castle Season 7? –Dani

Mitovich: Well, if you want to talk about the very beginning, know that RySpo arrive at the car crash scene just moments after Beckett, and thus are still wearing their finest. “We’re not about to let her go by herself,” says Jon Huertas, ” so there we are, in our tuxes — like a Latino James Bond with his Caucasian James Bond sidekick.” And it just may take double the 007s to temper their explosive colleague. “It’s hard to control a person when they’re going through that sort of emotive state, so we let Beckett have her time,” says Huertas. “First and foremost, though, you want to make sure Castle either is or is not in the car — and we find out pretty quickly, as you can tell in the promo.”

Question: You would make my week if you gave us some good Castle scoop! Pretty please with a Badass Beckett on top? –Ginger

Mitovich: Episode 7 will apparently saddle up Kate, Rick et al for a trip to the wild, wild west – or at least a modern-day dude ranch facsimile thereof. Thus, guest casting is underway for a sheriff and his wife, a rugged ranch hand, a “muscular, sexy gay cowboy” and other rootin’-tootin’ folk.

Question: Please (give) me any and all info on Arrow, please. –Caroline

Mitovich: A new season comes “new toys” for Oliver to play with. “In the season premiere, you’ll see a new kind of arrow,” showrunner Marc Guggenheim shares. “And in Episode 5, there’s another new kind of arrow we’ve never seen before. Season 3 is like a movie sequel, where he’s got new gadgets to play with!”

Question: When will the third season of Beauty and the Beast start? –Chiara

Mitovich: Not until “midseason,” which could mean anywhere from January to spring to (to hear some tell it) maybe even summer 2015. But at least you have this to look forward to: In Season 3’s fourth episode, Cat and Vincent will meet with a marriage counselor, as they endeavor to balance their different careers with their relationship.

Question: Any Season 6 scoop on NCIS: LA’s Nell?—Paul

Mitovich: Anyone who enjoyed the Nell/Hetty moment in the season finale “is in for some surprises in the first and second episode, and the third, too,” showrunner Shane Brennan told me. “Nell comes to Hetty’s rescue in a very interesting way.”

Question: Any Hart of Dixie scoop? —Julianna

Mitovich: Is BlueBell big enough for two Zoe Harts? The CW charmer is looking for a twentysomething actress to play “Zoe 2.0,” a very attractive, fashionable, quick-witted, New York attorney struggling to make sense of life in the quaint Alabama burg. The character’s actual name isn’t actually Zoe 2.0. That would be weird and confusing. It’s Olivia Green.

That’s it. Enjoy!

Here is a list of the programming options to expect on TV this week:

On September 17, the season finale of the Halle Barry CBS drama Extant will air at 10 PM.

That same night, September 17, a sneak peek of the new drama The Mysteries of Laura will air on NBC at 10 PM.  Debra Messing (Will & Grace) stars as Laura Diamond, a brilliant NYPD homicide detective who balances her day job with a crazy family life that includes two unruly twin boys and a soon-to-be ex-husband (Josh Lucas) – also a cop – who just can’t seem to sign the divorce papers. Between cleaning up after her boys and cleaning up the streets, she’d be the first to admit she has her “hot mess” moments.

Also on September 17, the new FOX drama Red Band Society will debut at 9 PM.  Based on the award-winning Spanish series Polseres Vermelles, this new series takes a provocative, unconventional and, at times, comic look at the lives of patients in the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles.

The new Hallmark Channel movie Perfect on Paper will debut on September 20 at 9 PM.  An idealistic, young book editor reluctantly moves to Los Angeles to edit a famous author’s latest romance novel. As she struggles to maintain her integrity while battling the best-selling diva’s demands, she meets two very different men and learns that the best romantic choice is not always the one who looks best “on paper”.

On September 21, the new drama Madam Secretary will debut on CBS at 8 PM followed by a new season of The Good Wife at 9PM.  For Madam Secretary, Téa Leoni stars as Elizabeth McCord, the shrewd, determined, newly appointed Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home. A college professor and a brilliant former CIA analyst who left for ethical reasons, Elizabeth returns to public life at the request of the President following the suspicious death of her predecessor. The President values her apolitical leanings, her deep knowledge of the Middle East, her flair for languages and her ability to not just think outside the box, but to not even acknowledge there is a box.

NOTE: CBS will air a “doubleheader” of Madam Secretary at 8 PM and then again at 10 PM. East Coast viewers should check their local listings for exact airtimes though.

That same night over on PBS will feature two episodes of season 7 of Miss Marple, starting with the movie A Caribbean Mystery and Greenshaw’s Folly.  The first episode will feature acclaimed British actress Julia McKenzie (Cranford) as spinster sleuth Miss Marple. While staying at a lavish tropical island hotel, Miss Marple investigates the sudden death of a fellow guest. With the help of a curmudgeonly business tycoon, Miss Marple unravels a web of deceit, murder and “dark magic,” leaving her to consider every one of the hotel’s guests as a suspect.  The second episode will be about what happens when an old family friend and her young son turn to Miss Marple for assistance, she places them at nearby Greenshaw’s Folly, the family home of an eccentric botanist. But it becomes clear that the labyrinthine Folly isn’t quite the safe house that Miss Marple had hoped, when death casts its dark and sinister shadow on the residents.  Check your local listing for airtime for both airings.

Mark your calendars!

Last weekend the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills held its 10th Annual Fall Preview Parties where the folks at The CW and CBS presented some of their new dramas before the 2014-2015 Fall TV Season gets underway.

The CW has two new dramas set to debut next month – Jane the Virgin and The Flash – and both shows were represented by cast members and the creative minds behind both new dramas in one panel.

The Flash-Jane the Virgin

On the panel were The Flash executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and cast members Jesse L. Martin and Candice Patton, who will play Detective Joe West and his daughter Iris West (respectively) in one of the most-talked about new dramas of the fall. The Flash, of course, is a spin-off of the hit series Arrow that will tell the story of Barry Allen (series lead Grant Gustin) a brilliant, yet socially awkward, forensic scientist for the Central City Police Department, whose obsession with his tragic past (the murder of his mother) causes him to become an outcast among his peers. Allen tries to uncover the truth about his mom’s murder and clear his father’s name, which leads him to Harrison Wells’ particle accelerator. When the accelerator causes an explosion, Allen is struck by lightning, and enters a coma for nine months. When he wakes up 9 months later, he learns he has the ability to move at superhuman speeds, though he is not the only meta-human created in the wake of the explosion. As the violence related to meta-human criminals escalates, though still keeping the promise of finding out why his mother murdered, Allen vows using his gift of speed to protect Central City with the help from a few close friends and associates who share his secrets.

Also on the panel were Jane the Virgin executive producers Ben Silverman and Jennie Snyder Urman and cast members Gina Rodriguez and Jaime Camil, who play title character Jane Villanueva and telenovela star Rogelio (respectively) in one of the most-unexpectedly charming dramedies of the fall. Jane the Virgin tells the story of Jane, a hard-working, religious young Latina woman whose family tradition and a vow to save her virginity until marriage is shattered when a doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her by mistake during a checkup. And to make matters worse, the biological donor is a married man, a former playboy and cancer survivor, who is not only the new owner of the hotel where Jane works, but was also her former teenage crush.

I had the opportunity to see the pilot episode of The Flash at Comic Con in July and thoroughly enjoyed it then; and seeing it a second time at the Paley Center was just as pleasurable. There is plenty of action and Easter Eggs for the comic book fans, plenty of laughs because of Barry Allen’s congenial personality and a great villain for Barry and Detective West to chase.

As for Jane the Virgin, I was extremely skeptical before seeing the pilot, but after the screening I had to admit I was pleasantly surprised by how charming, entertaining and just damn fun the pilot episode was. If you liked Ugly Betty and the narrator-style of Pushing Daisies, you will – more than likely – enjoy Jane the Virgin. It is filled with plenty of over-the-top situations straight out of a telenovela – and there is also a popular telenovela contained within the show too – plenty of family drama, a little bit of intrigue and a crazy stories of romance.

I highly recommend that folks check out both shows when they premiere next month. The Flash will debut on October 7 at 8 PM and Jane the Virgin will debut on October 13 at 9 PM.

Scorpion

As for CBS, there was only one panel for the new drama Scorpion, which included cast members Elyes Gabel, Robert Patrick, Katharine McPhee, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jaydn Wong and Ari Stidham and executive producers Heather Kadin, Scooter Braun, Alex Kurtzman, Nicholas Wootton and Nick Santora as well as Walter O’Brien on whom the show is based.

Scorpion is loosely based on the true story of eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who comprise the last line of defense against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. As Homeland Security’s new think tank, O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (Thomas), an expert behaviorist who can read anyone; Happy Quinn (Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvester Dodd (Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive technological knowledge to solve mind-boggling predicaments amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humor and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (McPhee), who has a young, gifted son, to translate the world for them. At last, these nerdy masterminds have found the perfect job: a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solve the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

Scorpion was screened at Comic Con in July and I was really surprised by the positive response by the packed audience of proud geeks and nerds; and the response by the folks at the Paley Center was nearly as positive. I suggest that viewers not judge the series only by the description or any trailers that have aired but rather check out the debut on September 22 at 9 PM.

The other new CBS dramas that screened that night included Madam Secretary and Stalker as well as the already aired second part of the NCIS episode that introduced the spin-off series NCIS: New Orleans.

Madam Secretary stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the shrewd, determined, newly appointed Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home. A college professor and a brilliant former CIA analyst who left for ethical reasons, Elizabeth returns to public life at the request of the President following the suspicious death of her predecessor.

Stalker stars Maggie Q (Nikita) and Dylan McDermott (Hostages and American Horror Story) as detectives who investigate stalking incidents, including voyeurism, cyber harassment and romantic fixation, for the Threat Assessment Unit of the LAPD.

NCIS: New Orleans focuses on the local field office that investigates criminal cases affecting military personnel in the Big Easy.

I recommend that folks DVR Madam Secretary, watching it when you have time; skip Stalker as it is disturbing unless you are a fan of Criminal Minds then this series is right up your alley; and if you like both NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles, you will enjoy NCIS: New Orleans.

Madam Secretary debuts on September 21 at 8 PM (with an encore at 10 PM); Stalker debuts on October 1 at 10 PM and NCIS: New Orleans debuts on September 22 at 9 PM.

The fall TV season is nearly upon us and it is time to take a look at what the major networks have in store for us.

Here is the final night of programming, focusing on the new and returning dramas that will debut or air their season premieres when the fall TV season gets started.

The following is the Sunday night schedule (courtesy of TV Line):

SundayNOTE: You can double click on the image above to see a larger size of the Monday night chart.

The new CBS drama Madam Secretary will debut on September 21 followed by the season six premiere of The Good Wife.

The President values her apolitical leanings, her deep knowledge of the Middle East, her flair for languages and her ability to not just think outside the box, but to not even acknowledge there is a box. The cast includes Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers), Tim Daly (Private Practice), Zeljko Ivanek (Revolution), Geoffrey Arend (Body of Proof) and Erich Bergen (Jersey Boys).

The Good Wife will launch its sixth season with Eli (series regular Alan Cummings) attempting to convince Alicia (series lead Julianna Margulies) to run for state’s attorney, which will set off Finn Polmar’s (series regular Matthew Goode) feelings since he once sought that office himself. In addition, there will be a story arc involving Kalinda (series regular Archie Panjabi) that will come close to the earthquake-level intensity of last season’s violent death of Will and the mutiny at Lockhart-Gardner. Among the guest stars will include David Hyde Pierce (Frasier), Connie Nielson (The Following), Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me) and Taye Diggs (Murder in the First).

The majority of the Sunday night dramas will then air on September 28 with CSI airing its 15th season premiere on CBS. Meanwhile on ABC, Once Upon a Time will air its fourth season premiere followed by the season four premiere of Revenge and the second season premiere of Resurrection.

The 15th season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will explain the “extended leave of absence” of Captain Jim Brass (former series regular Paul Guilfoyle) by jumping into a serial killer case that will run throughout the season. In lighter stories, Julie Finlay (series lead Elisabeth Shue) will get a new love interest in Mark Valley (Human Target and Body of Proof) while Greg (series regular Eric Szmanda) and Sara’s (series regular Jorja Fox) close bond will be explored further. George Eads will continue to be a series regular and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Franklin and Bash) and Bella Thorne (Shake It Up) will guest star.

Here is a teaser for the season premiere of CSI.

The fourth season of Once Upon a Time will, of course, focus on the arrival of Queen Elsa of Arendelle (from the box office film Frozen), her sister Anna and Anna’s fiancé Kristoff (to be played by Georgina Haig from Fringe and Reckless, newcomer Elizabeth Lail and Scott Michael Foster from Greek and Chasing Life respectively). The season will also show Regina’s (series regular Lana Parrilla) reaction to the unexpected return of her new love Robin Hood’s (recurring guest star Sean Maguire) long-believed dead wife Marian (guest star Christie Laing from Arrow); how Snow White (series lead Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (series regular Josh Dallas) are adapting to being new parents; how well Emma (series lead Jennifer Morrison) and Hook (series regular Colin O’Donoghue) will deal with their burgeoning relationship and if Belle (series regular Emilie de Ravin) will learn the truth about what new husband Rumpelstiltskin (series regular Robert Carlisle) is really up to. Guest stars this season will include Frances O’Connor (Mr. Selfridge and Timeline) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost and V); and Kristin Bauer van Straten (True Blood) will be back as Maleficent and Michael Socha (Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) will be back as The Knave.

Here is an extended trailer for season four of Once Upon a Time.

Season four of Revenge will find the show taking a different direction with Victoria Grayson (series lead Madeleine Stowe) now the one aiming to take down Emily Thorne (series lead Emily VanCamp). In addition, the series will focus on the very much unexpected return from the dead of David Clarke (new series regular James Tupper) whose dynamic with Emily is “not what you’re going to be expecting”. The dead girl left in Daniel’s (series regular Josh Bowman) will “lead to a significant change” in the Hamptons’ golden boy; and we will see a very different Jack Porter (series regular Nick Wechsler). Oh, and there will be a death; a man with ties to Conrad Grayson (series regular Henry Czerny). Guest stars will include Brian Hallisay (The Client List), Nestor Serrano (Graceland), Yeardley Smith (best known as the voice of Lisa on The Simpsons) and Elena Satine (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

Resurrection will be back for its second season, picking up one week after the season one finale and answering the question whether Bellamy (series lead Omar Epps) is one of the Returned. Sheriff Fred Langston (series regular Matt Craven) will be at his “lowest point” and the return of his mother (Michelle Fairley from Game of Thrones) will have a “profound impact” on him. Time will also be spent on Deputy Carl Enders (recurring guest star Christopher Berry) and the Returned people in his life. Stage and screen actress Donna Murphy (Tangled) will have a recurring role.

Mark your calendars!
