Hey All,

Here are the news items for the last few weeks:

TELEVISION

The Blacklist has been renewed for a fourth season. (Variety)

TNT has given renewals to The Librarians and Major Crimes, but the network has cancelled Legends, Agent X and Public Morals. (Elizabeth Wagmeister at Variety)

FOX has given a season two order to Wayward Pines. (The Futon Critic)

Showtime has given renewal orders to Homeland and The Affair. (The Futon Critic)

Crackle has given a second season order to the streaming series The Art of More. (The Futon Critic)

Amazon has given a second season order to both web series Hand of God and The Man in the High Castle. And, Amazon has also given series orders for two new shows: Good Girl Revolt and Patriot. Good Girl Revolt will be set in 1969, following a group of young female researchers at “News of the Week,” who simply ask to be treated fairly. The cast will include Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect and True Blood) and Grace Gummer (Extant). Patriot follows the complicated life of intelligence officer John Tavner. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

Actress Megalyn Echikunwke (The 4400 and The Following) will appear on Arrow as Vixen, an African orphan who inherited the ability to mimic any animal. (Denise Petski at Deadline)

Actress Jaime Ray Newman (Drop Dead Diva) will have a recurring role on Bates Motel, playing Rebecca Hamilton, an old flame of Alex Romero (series regular Nestor Carbonell) with whom she’s still very much in love. (Denise Petski at Deadline)

Looks like Kiefer Sutherland may be coming back to the small screen this time as President of the United States. Designated Survivor is the new conspiracy thriller from ABC that will find Sutherland, playing a lower level United States Cabinet member who is suddenly appointed President after a catastrophic attack during the State of the Union kills everyone above him in the Presidential line of succession. Scottish actor Richard Rankin has landed the role of Roger Wakefield in the second season of Outlander. Roger is the adopted son of Reverend Wakefield, who was introduced in the first season of the much buzz-about Starz series. Roger is a professor at Oxford with a keen interest in history and all the secrets and insights its presents. (Denise Petski at Deadline)

Actress Italia Ricci (Chasing Life) will appear in Supergirl in the recurring role of Siobhan Smythe, the latest hire by Cat Grant (series regular Calista Flockart), who at first becomes a work nemesis for Kara (series lead Melissa Benoist), but later proves a more deadly foe for Supergirl as the DC Comics villain Silver Banshee. (Denise Petski at Deadline)

Actor Tom Welling (Smallville) may be coming back to the small screen in the starring role of the CBS drama series project Section 13, which centers on a CIA black ops officer-turned-private contractor (Welling) who, after a personal tragedy, joins a covert organization devoted to carrying out the most difficult and dangerous high-stakes assignments. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

Actress Teri Reeves (Chicago Fire) will have a recurring role on Once Upon a Time as the grown-up version of Dorothy Gale, who was last seen in the series as a teenager. This time around Dorothy is a “brave warrior for good” who returns to Oz to save the magical city from the most wicked of witches. (Matt Mitovich at TV Line)

Actress Alicia Witt (Friday Night Lights) will appear in Nashville in a major arc, playing music sensation Autumn, “a respected singer who’s paid her dues and who’s managed to both cross over to pop and thrive in the era of bro country.” Also, actress Meg Steedle (Boardwalk Empire) will guest star in the ABC series as a single mom that Avery sparks to after they have a charming first encounter. Actor Diego Boneta (Scream Queens) will guest star in Jane the Virgin as Dax, a genius techie and hipster skateboarder who takes a look at Jane’s computer and ends up surprising her — in more ways than one. (Vlada Gelman at TV Line)

Actress Melinda Clarke (The O.C. and Nikita) has landed a recurring role on Gotham, playing Grace Van Dahl, a power-hungry woman who plays the perfect hostess and wife while she plots how to cheat — and kill! — to get what she wants. (Rebecca Iannucci at TV Line and E! Online)

MOVIE NEWS

Actor Chadwick Boseman (42 and Draft Day) will star as the highly respected Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the upcoming box office film based on the first African American judge on that court. (Anita Busch at Deadline)

It would seem that director James Gunn is eyeing Kurt Russell for a key role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Russell is being considered for the role of Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father. (Ross A. Lincoln at Deadline)

There were a lot of programming options on the cable networks throughout November thanks in great part to all of the holiday movies and, of course, the myriad of TV dramas that aired all over the primetime landscape. Here is how all of those programming options performed during the month of November:

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

Fargo – The acclaimed ABC anthology series aired five more new episodes from its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 2 – 1.3 million
November 9 – 1.1 million
November 16 – 1.2 million
November 23 – 1.2 million
November 30 – 1.3 million

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for November. A new episode of Fargo aired on December 7 and the season finale aired on FX on Monday, December 14 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in December’s report.

Major Crimes – The TNT drama returned for more of its current, fourth season on November 2, airing five episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 2 – 2.2 million (Mid-Season Return)
November 9 – 2.6 million
November 16 – 2.5 million
November 23 – 2.5 million
November 30 – 3.7 million

This averages out to 2.7 million viewers for November. New episodes of Major Crimes aired on December 7 and December 14 with the mid-season finale set to air on TNT on Monday, December 21 at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in December’s report.

Legends – The second season of the TNT spy drama premiered on November 2, airing five episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 2 – 676,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
November 9 – 477,000 viewers
November 16 – No new episode aired
November 23 – 576,000 viewers
November 30 – 721,000 viewers

This averages out to 613,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Legends aired on December 7 and December 14 with the next new episode set to air on TNT on Monday, December 21 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in December’s report.

TUESDAYS:

The Bastard Executioner – The FX period piece drama aired its final three episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 3 – 1.1 million
November 10 – 816,000 viewers
November 17 – 867,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 988,000 viewers for November. The Bastard Executioner will not be returning for another season as FX has cancelled the show after only one season.

If Loving You Is Wrong – The OWN soap opera drama aired four more new episode of its second season during the month and into December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 3 – 2.3 million
November 10 – 2.4 million
November 17 – 2.2 million
November 24 – 2.2 million
December 1 – 2.5 million (Mid-Season Finale)

This averages out to 2.3 million viewers for the time period above. New episodes of If Loving You Is Wrong will return to OWN for the rest of its second season on Tuesday, January 5 at 9 PM.

Finding Carter – The MTV drama aired four more new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episode are as follows:

November 3 – 401,000 viewers
November 10 – 544,000 viewers
November 17 – 467,000 viewers
November 24 – 361,000 viewers

This averages out to 443,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Finding Carter aired on December 1 and December 8 and the two hour season finale aired on MTV on Tuesday, December 15 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Manhattan – The WGN America period piece drama aired four more new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 3 – 335,000 viewers
November 10 – 161,000 viewers
November 17 – 250,000 viewers
November 24 – 180,000 viewers

This averages out to 232,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Manhattan aired on December 1 and December 8 and the season finale aired on WGN America on Tuesday, December 15 at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Being Mary Jane – The BET drama aired four more new episodes from its current, third season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 3 – 1.5 million
November 10 – 1.8 million
November 17 – 1.4 million
November 24 – 1.4 million

This averages out to 1.5 million viewers for November. New episodes of Being Mary Jane aired on December 1 and December 8 and the season finale aired on BET on Tuesday, December 15 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

WEDNESDAYS:

American Horror Story: Hotel – The FX anthology series aired three more new episodes of its current season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 4 – 2.9 million
November 11 – 2.6 million
November 18 – 2.6 million
November 25 – No episode aired

This average out to 2.7 million viewers for November. New episodes of American Horror Story: Hotel aired on December 1 and December 8 and the season finale aired on FX on Wednesday, December 16 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Kingdom – The DirecTV series aired four more new episodes of its second season during the month, but ratings could be not tracked down for those episodes. Kingdom aired new episodes on December 1 and December 8 and the season finale aired on DirecTV on Wednesday, December 16 at 9 PM. If ratings can be tracked down for those episodes, they will be included in December’s report.

THURSDAYS:

Haven – Four more new episodes of the final season of the Syfy drama aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 5 – 796,000 viewers
November 12 – 724,000 viewers
November 19 – 660,000 viewers
November 26 – 533,000 viewers

This averages out to 678,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Haven aired on December 3 and December 10 and the back-to-back series finale aired on Syfy on Thursday, December 17 at 10 and 11 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

FRIDAYS:

Z Nation – The zombie series aired five more new episodes of its second season on Syfy during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 6 – 835,000 viewers
November 13 – 665,000 viewers
November 20 – 767,000 viewers
November 27 – 917,000 viewers

This averages out to 796,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Z Nation aired on December 4 and December 11 and the season finale aired on Syfy on Friday, December 18 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

The Knick – The Cinemax period piece aired four more new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 6 – 166,000 viewers
November 13 – 255,000 viewers
November 20 – 195,000 viewers
November 27 – 347,000 viewers

This average out to 241,000 viewers for November. New episodes of The Knick aired on December 4 and December 11 and the season finale aired on Cinemax on Friday, December 18 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Satisfaction – The USA Network drama aired four more new episodes from its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 6 – 686,000 viewers
November 13 – 663,000 viewers
November 20 – 659,000 viewers
November 27 – 493,000 viewers

This average out to 625,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Satisfaction aired on December 4 and December 11 and the season finale aired on the USA Network on Friday, December 18 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

SATURDAYS:

Doctor Who – The long-running series aired five more new episodes, including the season finale, of its 9th season on BBC America during November and into December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 7 – 912,000 viewers
November 14 – 645,000 viewers
November 21 – 801,000 viewers
November 28 – 895,000 viewers
December 5 – 852,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This average out to 821,000 viewers for the time period above. The Christmas episode of Doctor Who will air on BBC America on Christmas Day at 9 PM.

Da Vinci’s Demons – Four more new episodes of the third and final season of the Starz period piece drama aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 7 – 233,000 viewers
November 14 – 231,000 viewers
November 21 – 201,000 viewers
November 28 – No ratings were posted

This averages out to approximately 222,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Da Vinci’s Demons aired on December 5, December 12 and December 19 with the series finale set to air on Starz on Saturday, December 26 at 8 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

The Returned – The French original series aired four more new episodes of its second season on Sundance during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 7 – 100,000 viewers
November 14 – 127,000 viewers
November 21 – 82,000 viewers
November 28 – 92,000 viewers

This averages out to 100,000 viewers for November. New episodes of The Returned aired on December 5 and the season finale aired on Sundance on Saturday, December 12 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

SUNDAYS:

The Leftovers – The HBO drama aired the five remaining episodes of its second season during November and into the beginning of December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 625,000 viewers
November 8 – 636,000 viewers
November 15 – 610,000 viewers
November 22 – 690,000 viewers
November 29 – 861,000 viewers
December 6 – 993,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 883,000 viewers for November. HBO recently announced that The Leftovers will return for its third and final season sometime in 2016.

Homeland – The Showtime drama aired five more new episodes of its current, fifth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 1.3 million
November 8 – 1.4 million
November 15 – 1.3 million
November 22 – 1.5 million
November 29 – 1.4 million

This averages out to 1.4 million viewers for November. New episodes of Homeland on December 6 and December 13 with the season finale airing on Showtime on Sunday, December 20 at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

The Affair – The Showtime drama aired five more new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 859,000 viewers
November 9 – 891,000 viewers
November 15 – 787,000 viewers
November 22 – 844,000 viewers
November 29 – 916,000 viewers

This averages out to 859,000 viewers for November. A new episode of The Affair aired on December 6 and the season finale aired on Showtime on Sunday, December 13 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

The Walking Dead – The popular AMC zombie series aired the final five episodes of the first part of its sixth season during the month, including the mid-season finale. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 13.3 million
November 8 – 12.4 million
November 15 – 12.9 million
November 22 – 13.2 million
November 29 – 14 million (Mid-Season Finale)

This averages out to 13.2 million viewers for November. The Walking Dead will return for the remainder of its current, sixth season on Sunday, February 14 on AMC at 10 PM.

The Librarians – The popular TNT series returned for its second season on November 1 with a two-hour airing as well as airing four more new episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 2.2 million (Part 1 of Season Premiere)
November 1 – 2 million (Part 2 of Season Premiere)
November 8 – 2 million
November 15 – 1.9 million
November 22 – 2.1 million
November 29 – 2 million

This averages out to 2 million for November. New episodes of The Librarians aired on December 6 and December 13 with the next new episode airing on TNT on Sunday, December 20 at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Agent X – The new TNT spy drama debuted on November 8 with two back-to-back episodes as well as three additional new episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 8 – 1.3 million (Part 1 of DEBUT)
November 8 – 1 million (Part 2 of DEBUT)
November 15 – 1 million
November 22 – 1 million
November 29 – 978,000 viewers

This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for November. New episodes of Agent X aired on December 6 and December 13 with the next new episode airing on TNT on Sunday, December 20 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Flesh and Bone – This new Starz ballet themed drama debuted on November 8, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 8 – 190,000 viewers (DEBUT)
November 15 – 147,000 viewers
November 22 – 130,000 viewers
November 29 – 124,000 viewers

This averages out to 148,000 viewers for November. New episodes of Flesh and Bone aired on December 6 and December 13 with the next new episode airing on December 20 on Starz at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

Into the Badlands – This new AMC drama debuted on November 15, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 15 – 6.4 million (DEBUT)
November 22 – 4.8 million
November 29 – 5.2 million

This averages out to 5.5 million viewers for November. New episodes of Into the Badlands aired on December 6 and December 13 with the next new episode airing on AMC on Sunday, December 20 at 10 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

The Royals – The controversial E! series returned for the start of its second season on November 15, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 15 – 841,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
November 22 – 725,000 viewers
November 29 – 532,000 viewers

This averages out to 699,000 viewers for November. New episodes of The Royals aired on December 6 and December 13 with the next new episode airing on E! on Sunday, December 20 at 9 PM. The ratings for those episodes will be included in the December report.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES AND MINI-SERIES

WCTH New Year's Wish

On December 26, the Hallmark Channel will air the two-hour When Calls the Heart New Year’s Wish holiday special at 8 PM.

Elizabeth and Jack are reeling from Charles’ shocking proposal. As Elizabeth assures Jack her heart remains with him, Jack takes some time apart, while dealing with his disappointment in his mentor Bill, who remains in the Hope Valley jail awaiting trial. And while Abigail decides to take in two runaways who need special care, the whole town prepares to put on an elaborate New Year’s Eve celebration under Rosemary’s leadership, just as Jack finds himself embroiled in a dangerous showdown to end Bill’s counterfeit scheme.

NOTE: The show will be back for its third season in February.

TV Ratings

The time has come! The last of the mid-season/winter finales has aired on the major networks. As of last night, it is officially the holiday break for all of the major network show (and remember I only deal with dramas).

There are, of course, still plenty of cable show (and movies) to watch over the last two weeks of the year, but it will be quiet on the major network front until after the new year.

Here is how the sole Thursday night drama that aired its mid-season finale last night fared in the overall ratings:

Christmas Land

On December 20, the Hallmark Channel movie Christmas Land will debut at 8 PM.

When Jules inherits a Christmas tree farm from her late grandmother, she decides the sensible thing to do is to sell it. However, once she revisits the farm, she falls in love with the townspeople and meets a very special–and handsome—town lawyer named Tucker.

The cast includes Nikki DeLoach (Awkward), Luke MacFarlane (Killjoys) and Maureen McCormick.
