Mercy Street

On January 17, the new PBS mini-series Mercy Street will debut at 10 PM.

The six-part series follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War — New England abolitionist Mary Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead from The Returned) and Confederate supporter Emma Green (newcomer Hannah James).

The cast include Gary Cole, Cherry Jones, Jack Falahee (How to Get Away With Murder), AnnaSophia Robb (The Carrie Diaries), Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters and Killjoys) and Cameron Monaghan (Shameless and Gotham).

NOTE: Mercy Street will air every Sunday through February 21.

Billions

The new Showtime drama Billions will debut on January 17 at 10 PM.

Shrewd, savvy U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti from Saving Mr. Banks) and the brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis from Homeland) are on an explosive collision course, with each using all of his considerable smarts, power and influence to outmaneuver the other.

The cast includes Malin Akerman (Trophy Wife), Maggie Siff (Sons of Anarchy) and David Costabile (Suits).

TV Ratings

Due to a little thing called the State of the Union Address, most of the primetime line-up on the major networks were either pre-empted or there were lots of repeats. The only saving grace was the return of one drama last night.

Here is how that lone Tuesday night drama fared in the overall ratings:

Love on the Sidelines

On January 16, the Hallmark Channel movie Love On the Sidelines will debut at 8 PM.

Laurel Welk (Emily Kinney from The Walking Dead) is an out of work aspiring fashion designer who lands a job as a personal assistant to superstar quarterback Danny Holland (John Reardon from Continuum). Holland’s been sidelined with an injury and the last thing he wants is a female assistant, particularly one who knows nothing about football.

But the two opposites strike a bargain and agree to work together on a trial basis. While Laurel struggles to master her job, knowing she’s in way over her head, Danny struggles to maintain his star image even though he’s concerned his injury might impact his career. Things get even more complicated when employer and employee start to notice there’s more to the other than meets the eye… and what they find is love on the sidelines.

Here is the long list of the programming options to expect on TV this coming week:

On January 12, Pretty Little Liars will be back for its five-years forward return on the former ABC Family Channel now known as FreeForm at 8 PM followed by the debut of the new drama Shadowhunters at 9 PM. Shadowhunters is based on the best-selling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

Also that same night, iZombie will be back from its holiday break on The CW at 9 PM.

The new FOX drama Second Chance (formerly The Frankenstein Code and Lookinglass) will debut on January 13 at 9 PM, starring Rob Kazinsky (True Blood) and Tim DeKay (White Collar).

On January 13, the one-hour season premiere of the second season of Younger will debut on TV Land at 10 PM and that same night, Criminal Minds and Code Black will both be back from their holiday breaks on CBS at 9 and 10 PM respectively.

The USA Network drama Colony will debut on January 14 at 10 PM, starring Josh Holloway (Lost), Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead and Prison Break), Peter Jacobson (House) and Amanda Righetti (The Mentalist).

On January 16, the Hallmark Channel movie Love On the Sidelines will debut at 8 PM, starring Emily Kinney (The Walking Dead) and John Reardon (Continuum).

TV Ratings

Only one major network aired new episodes last night, allowing three more dramas to get back to normal after their holiday break. Oh, and a little thing called the Golden Globes aired last night too, averaging 15.5 million (for anyone who wants to know).

Here is how the Sunday night dramas fared in the overall ratings:

TELEVISION

Actor Michael Weatherly will be leaving the long-running NCIS franchise at the end of this current season on CBS. (Debra Birnbaum at Variety)

E! has renewed The Royals for a third season. (Elizabeth Wagmeister at Variety)

Being Mary Jane has been renewed for a fourth season by BET. (Elizabeth Wagmeister at Variety)

TNT has decided to pull the plug on its long-running drama Rizzoli & Isles after the upcoming 7th season. (Elizabeth Wagmeister at Variety)

Actress Jewel Staite (Firefly and Stargate Atlantis) has landed a guest-starring role in the upcoming CW drama Legends of Tomorrow, playing Rachel Turner, a tech genius and roboticist from the future who just so happens to be a descendant of an established DC Universe character. (Sadie Genis at TV Guide)

Actress Summer Glau (Firefly and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and legendary actor Gerald McRaney (the recently defunct Agent X) will both appear in upcoming episodes of Castle. Glau will guest star in one episode, playing Kendall Frost, a provocative private detective in Los Angeles who competes with Castle to solve a deadly mystery. On the other hand, McRaney will appear in multiple episodes as Mason Wood, the head of a legendary and secretive private detective society. (Michael Ausiello at TV Line)

Actor Wes Brown (Hart of Dixie) will take over the role of Gaston on Once Upon a Time, appearing in a flashback episode chronicling “an ostensibly sexier, more chiseled slice of Belle’s life. (Mark Snetiker at Entertainment Weekly)

The SundanceTV drama Rectify will end after its upcoming 4th season that will air this fall. (Variety)

Actress Maya Stojan (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Castle) will appear in a February episode of NCIS as one of four privately commissioned deep sea divers who, after a retired petty officer dies under fishy circumstances, must remain in the diving chamber for four days to decompress (alongside the deceased’s body) while the NCIS team attempts to crack the case from land. She will also appear in an upcoming episode of Grey’s Anatomy in a role that has yet to be revealed. (Matt Mitovich at TV Line)

WEB SERIES NEWS

Actor Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) has landed the male lead in the Hulu original drama Shut Eye that takes a darkly comedic look at the underground world of Los Angeles storefront psychics and the organized crime syndicate that runs them. The story revolves around a disgruntled player in the organization who finds his cynical world view challenged when he starts to experience visions that may or may not be real. Donovan will play Charlie Haverford, a failed magician who now works as a psychic/conman overseeing a number of fortune telling parlors in Los Angeles. (Nellie Andreeva at Deadline)

MINI-SERIES NEWS

Actor Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones) has joined the cast of the upcoming Discovery Channel mini-series Harley and the Davidsons. He will play Walter Davidson. The story of the mini-series will follow how Milwaukee schoolyard pals built, and rode, the machines that rule the road. (James Hibberd at Entertainment Weekly)
