CASTING NEWS
Veteran actor Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica) will star in the Sons of Anarchy spin-off series Mayans MC, which centers on EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border who struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel as well as his need for respect from the women he loves. Olmos will star as Felipe Reyes, the family’s formerly strong patriarch who, after years of being crushed by bullets and labor, struggles to keep his past buried and lead his own sons down a lawful and righteous path. Actors Ian Anthony Dale (Murder in the First) and Santiago Cabrera (Heroes and The Musketeers) have joined the cast of the upcoming CBS summer suspense drama Salvation, which follows whip-smart MIT grad student Liam (Charlie Rowe) and tech billionaire Darius Tanz, who bring to a low-level Pentagon official a staggering discovery: An asteroid is just six months away from colliding with Earth. Liam and Darius team to launch a secret project to save the planet — a secret Liam must keep from the ones he loves. Dale will play Deputy Secretary of Defense Harris Anders, a consummate Washington insider who is tasked with running the government’s top-secret plan to deflect a planet killer asteroid. A man who’s devoted himself to country, Harris will find himself torn between following orders, following his conscience and following his heart. Meanwhile, Cabrera will play Darius, a charming self-made tech billionaire and visionary maverick, whose great love seems to be his projects. His greatest project of all, however, will be an audacious plan to save the human race from an incoming asteroid. (Deadline and The Futon Critic)
Actor Eion Bailey (Once Upon a Time) will have a recurring role on the Amazon series The Last Tycoon, starring opposite Matt Bomer (White Collar), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Lily Collins (box office film Rules Don’t Apply) and Rosemarie DeWitt (La La Land). The series focuses on Stahr (Bomer), Hollywood’s first wunderkind studio executive in the 1930s as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio, the brawny, imposing, charming and vain Pat Brady (Grammer), a character based on Louis B. Mayer. Bailey will play Clint Frost, an actor who’s handsome as hell, confident and excited about viewing an early preview of his movie, The Bells of Boston, for the studio brass. However, his elation turns to fear when he realizes his performance, like the movie, is not good. (Deadline)
Casting has been announced for the straight-to-series Freeform drama Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger that centers on Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) who come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul. Additional cast members include Andrea Roth (Rescue Me) and Gloria Reuben (ER and Mr. Robot). Roth will portray Melissa Bowen, Tandy’s mom, who is the eternal optimist despite the struggles to adapt to her new existence; while Reuben plays Adina Johnson, who invests every aspect of her being into giving her son the life she believes he deserves. Actors Edgar Ramirez (The Girl on the Train) and Darren Criss (Glee) have signed on to appear in Versace: American Crime Story that will explore the murder of Gianni Versace, who was killed on the steps of his home in Miami Beach by serial murderer Andrew Cunanan, who killed five people that year and then killed himself on a house boat, eight days after killing Versace. Ramirez will play Gianni Versace while Criss will play Andrew Cunanan. (Variety)
The new UP TV scripted series Date My Dad, starring Barry Watson (7th Heaven) has added to its cast. The new cast members include Cindy Busby (Cedar Cove and the Hallmark Channel movie Unleashing Mr. Darcy), Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale) and Chris Gauthier (Once Upon a Time and Eureka). (Press Release)
Actor Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy and The 100) will appear in the 150th episode of Blue Bloods (set to air in late March), playing ESU Deputy Chief Travis Jackson, who goes up against Frank when he files an age-discrimination suit against the department. (Entertainment Weekly and TV Line)
TV NEWS
Uber-producer/director J.J. Abrams and author Stephen King will be working on a new Hulu series called Castle Rock, the fictional town in Maine where many of the author’s books take place. (Variety)
Starz and the BBC will co-produce the limited series Howards End, based on the classic E.M. Forster novel that will bring the beloved novel to the small screen. The four hour-long episodes will explore the changing landscape of social and class divisions in turn of the century England through the prism of three families: the intellectual and idealistic Schlegels, the wealthy Wilcoxes from the world of business, and the working class Basts. Among the cast will be Hayley Atwell (Marvel’s Agent Carter), Matthew Macfadyen (Ripper Street and Pride & Prejudice) and Tracey Ullman. (The Futon Critic)
