BOX OFFICE AND TV CASTING NEWS
Actress Odette Annable (from the short-lived Pure Genius, as well as Banshee and House) will play the next big bad on Supergirl when it returns for season 3 this fall. She will play Reign, known as the infamous World Killer and akin to Doomsday in the DC Comics world. She was taken as an infant by Kryptonian scientists who bestowed her new abilities (Variety)
HBO has nabbed film star Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich) will star in the TV limited series Today Will Be Different, which is based on the book of the same name from author Maria Semple. The focus of the show will be on Eleanor Flood (Roberts), who wakes up determined to be her best self, but then life happens. Taking place over a single day, it’s a rollicking portrait of one woman’s fumbling but valiant attempt to navigate the knotty perils and sly grace of modern life. (Variety)
Actor Brendan Fraser (The Mummy franchise) has joined the cast of the upcoming FX anthology series Trust that tells the story of John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune. It will be set in 1973 when the young Getty is kidnapped in Rome and his mafia captors are banking on a multi-million dollar ransom. Fraser will play J. Paul Getty’s private investigator, James Fletcher Chace, who is eccentric, but is a master fixer who hails from Texas. The cast includes Donald Sutherland and Hillary Swank. (Variety)
Brazilian actor Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) will play Sunspot in the X-Men spinoff New Mutants. The movie will focus on Mutants at their most dangerous, both to themselves and others, when their powers are new, especially because mutation reveals itself during the teenage years. Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their pasts. They aren’t out to save the world – they’re just trying to stay alive. The cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch and Split), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Rosario Dawson (Daredevil). The movie is expected to release on April 13, 2018. (Variety)
Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar (whose show Pitch just came to an unexpected end) has landed the lead role in the FOX post-apocalyptic pilot called The Passage, which is based on the trilogy of books by Justin Cronin. The series will focus on a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte who must save the human race. Gosselaar will play an FBI agent, who balks at kidnapping Amy, who has been targeted for an unholy government experiment and goes on the run with her with a veritable army of feds on his heels. It is being reported that actor Sam Heughan (Outlander) will play the lead role opposite SNL alum Kate McKinnon and actress Mila Kunis in the box office film The Spy Who Dumped Me. McKinnon and Kunis will play best friends who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers the boyfriend who dumped her is actually was a spy. WGN America has cancelled the period piece drama Underground after two seasons. (Variety)
