Here are the news items for last week:

TV CASTING NEWS

Actor Shaun Sipos (The Vampire Diaries and Melrose Place) has landed a series regular role on the upcoming Syfy Superman prequel Krypton that is set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet. The show follows Superman’s grandfather (British actor Cameron Cuffe), whose House of El was ostracized and shamed, as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos. Sipos will play Adam Strange, a world-weary human, who finds himself stranded on Krypton as the unlikely mentor to Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather. (Deadline)

Actor Jacob Artist (Glee) has landed a recurring role on the second season of The Arrangement on E! He will play Wes Blaker, a charming young man with a sharp sense of humor and a dark side. (Deadline)

Actor Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope) will have a recurring role on the upcoming FOX drama The Gifted, playing Roderick Campbell, a mutant researcher contracted by the Sentinel Services. (Deadline)

Actor Riley Smith (Frequency) has landed a recurring role in the upcoming drama Life Sentence that will air on The CW. The series centers on Stella (Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars), a young woman diagnosed with terminal cancer. When she finds out that she’s not dying after all, she has to learn to live with the choices she made when she decided to “live like she was dying. Smith will play Dr. Will Grant, a rough-around-the-edges oncologist with a secret soft spot for his patients. (Deadline)

Actor-Director Chad Lowe will guest-star in an episode of Supergirl, playing Thomas Coville, the charismatic religious leader of a group that worships the Girl of Steel. (Entertainment Weekly and TV Line)

RENEWALS/CANCELLATIONS

The History Channel has renewed their series Vikings for a sixth season ahead of the show’s upcoming fifth season premiere. (Variety)

Sadly, Freeform has cancelled the sci-fi drama Stitchers after three seasons, leaving the fans with a great big cliffhanger. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Here is the list of programming options to expect on TV this coming week:

The fourth season finale of Being Mary Jane will air on September 19 at 10 PM on BET while the season finale of Midnight, Texas will also air on September 19 on NBC at 10 PM. Also that night, the new ABC drama Somewhere Between will air its season finale at 10:01 PM.

On September 20, the season premiere of Channel Zero: No-End House will air on Syfy at 10 PM while that same night the season finale of the CBS summer drama Salvation will air at the special time of 10 PM.

The fourth season premiere of Gotham will air on FOX on September 21 at 8 PM followed by the debut of the time slot premiere of The Orville at 9 PM.

Also on September 21, the season finale of the CBS summer drama Zoo will air at 10 PM.

The Hallmark Channel movie Falling for Vermont will debut on September 23 at 9 PM. When a best-selling author decides to escape the media frenzy, her plan goes awry when she’s caught in a thunderstorm and crashes her car. Found wandering with no memory and no ID, the town doctor (and a single dad) offers up his guest house until her memory returns. But as she blends seamlessly into their family life, she must decide if the life she’s been living is the life she wants. The film stars Julie Gonzalo (Dallas) and Benjamin Ayres (Saving Hope).

On September 24, the new series Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS at 8:30 PM [before moving over to CBS All Access next week]. The series will focus on one Starfleet officer, who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, she must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. The cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead), Doug Jones (Falling Skies), Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter franchise), James Frain (Orphan Black and True Blood) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) [among others].

The extended series finale of Teen Wolf, which is also the show’s 100 episode, will also air on MTV on September 24 at 8 PM.

Lastly, on September 24, the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Home Again will debut at 9 PM. When The Postables discover an antique vase with a letter inside, they trace the package to three little girls who attempted to sell the vase 18 years ago in order to save their family farm. While the vase was an heirloom from many generations ago, the origin is suspicious. With the farm again facing financial hardship, The Postables must choose between doing what’s legal and what’s moral. The film finds Eric Mabius, Kristin Booth, Crystal Lowe and Geoff Gustafson all reprising their roles.

A lot of summer programming on the cable networks came to an end in August with a handful more of cable shows ready to end over the next few weeks, as fall TV gets ready to start.

Let’s take a look at how all of the cable dramas performed during the month of August.

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

Shadowhunters – The finale two episodes of the third season of the Freeform fantasy series aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 7 – 601,000 viewers
August 14 – 587,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 594,000 viewers for August. Shadowhunters will return for a fourth season on Freeform sometime in 2018.

Stitchers – The final two episodes of the third season of the Freeform sci-fi series aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 7 – 350,000 viewers
August 14 – 364,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 357,000 viewers for August. Stitchers has yet to be renewed for a fourth season by Freeform.

Preacher – The AMC fantasy drama aired four new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 7 – 1.2 million
August 14 – 992,000 viewers
August 21 – 1 million
August 28 – 898,000 viewers

This averages out to 1 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 4 with the season finale of Preacher set to air on AMC on Monday, September 11 at 9 PM.

Will – The TNT period piece drama aired four episodes of its debut season during the month as well as its final episode on September 4. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 7 – 364,000 viewers
August 14 – 305,000 viewers
August 21 – 291,000 viewers
August 28 – 315,000 viewers
September 4 – 307,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 316,000 viewers for the time period. Will was sadly cancelled by TNT the day after its final episode aired.

TUESDAYS:

Animal Kingdom – The crime family TNT drama aired the final five episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 1.2 million
August 8 – 1.2 million
August 15 – 1.2 million
August 22 – 1.2 million
August 29 – 1.4 million

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for August. Animal Kingdom has been renewed by TNT for a third season.

The Haves and the Have Nots – The OWN soap opera aired five new episodes of its fifth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 2.3 million
August 8 – 2.3 million
August 15 – 2.4 million
August 22 – 2.5 million
August 29 – 2.6 million

This averages out to 2.4 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 5 with the finale episode of The Haves and the Have Nots expected to air on OWN on Tuesday, September 12 at 9 PM.

The Fosters – The Freeform family drama aired five more episodes from its fifth season during the month of August as well as its summer finale airing on September 5. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 657,000 viewers
August 8 – 694,000 viewers
August 15 – 612,000 viewers
August 22 – 586,000 viewers
August 29 – 577,000 viewers
September 5 – 743,000 viewers (Summer Finale)

This averages out to 657,000 viewers for that time period. The Fosters will return for the remainder of its fifth season on Freeform sometime in 2018.

The Bold Type – The new Freeform drama aired five new episodes of its debut season during the month of August as well as the final episode airing on September 5. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 352,000 viewers
August 8 – 339,000 viewers
August 15 – 294,000 viewers
August 22 – 280,000 viewers
August 29 – 360,000 viewers
September 5 – 331,000 viewers (Finale)

This average out to 391,000 viewers for that time period. The Bold Type has yet to be given an official renewal by Freeform.

Shooter – The USA Network aired five new episodes of its second season during the month of August as well as the final episode airing on September 5. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 1.2 million
August 8 – 1.3 million
August 15 – 1.2 million
August 22 – 1.2 million
August 29 – 1.3 million
September 5 – 1.2 million (Season Finale)

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for that time period. An official renewal for Shooter has yet to be announced by the USA Network.

Being Mary Jane – The BET drama aired five new episodes from its fourth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 788,000 viewers
August 8 – 755,000 viewers
August 15 – 584,000 viewers
August 22 – 881,000 viewers
August 29 – 773,000 viewers

This averages out to 756,000 viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 5 with the next new episode of Being Mary Jane set to air on BET on Tuesday, September 12 at 10 PM.

Manhunt: Unabomber – The Discovery 8-episode mini-series debuted on August 1, airing five episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 1.3 million (DEBUT)
August 8 – 904,000 viewers
August 15 – 940,000 viewers
August 22 – 928,000 viewers
August 29 – 1.1 million

This averages out to 1 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 5 with the final episode of Manhunt: Unabomber set to air on Discovery on Tuesday, September 12 at 10 PM.

WEDNESDAYS:

Blood Drive – The new gore-filled Syfy series aired five more new episodes of its debut season during the month as well as the final episode on September 6. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 498,000 viewers
August 9 – 334,000 viewers
August 16 – 343,000 viewers
August 23 – 377,000 viewers
August 30 – 364,000 viewers
September 6 – 364,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 380,000 viewers for that time period. Blood Drive has been canceled by Syfy after one season.

Broadchurch – The BBC America drama aired the last three episodes of its third and final season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 287,000 viewers
August 9 – 347,000 viewers
August 16 – 376,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 337,000 viewers for August.

Younger – The TV Land dramedy aired four new episodes of its fourth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 738,000 viewers
August 9 – 696,000 viewers
August 16 – 698,000 viewers
August 23 – 760,000 viewers
August 29 – 828,000 viewers

This averages out to 744,000 viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 6 with the season finale of Younger set to air on TV Land on Wednesday, September 13 at 10 PM. Younger has been given a fifth season renewal by TV Land.

Suits – The long-running USA Network legal drama aired five more new episodes from its seventh season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 1.4 million
August 9 – 1.3 million
August 15 – 1.5 million
August 23 – 1.4 million
August 30 – 1.5 million (100th Episode)

This averages out to 1.4 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 6 with the next new episode of Suits set to air on the USA Network on Wednesday, September 13 at 9 PM.

Greenleaf – The latter half of the second season of the OWN drama returned as a two-night event on August 15 and August 16, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 15 – 1.8 million (Mid-Season Premiere – Night One)
August 16 – 1.2 million (Mid-Season Premiere – Night Two)
August 23 – 1.5 million
August 30 – 1.4 million

This averages out to 1.5 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 6 with the next new episode of Greenleaf set to air on OWN on Wednesday, September 13 at 10 PM.

The Sinner – The new 8-episode mini-series from the USA Network debuted on August 2, airing five episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 3.8 million (DEBUT)
August 9 – 1.4 million
August 16 – 1.6 million
August 23 – 1.8 million
August 30 – 1.8 million

This averages out to 2.1 million viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 6 with the next new episode of The Sinner set to air on the USA Network on Wednesday, September 13 at 10 PM.

Mr. Mercedes – The DirecTV series, based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, debuted on August 9, airing four episodes during the month, but ratings could not be tracked down for any of those episodes.

THURSDAYS:

Nashville – The final two episodes of the fifth season of the now CMT drama aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 3 – 744,000 viewers
August 10 – 683,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 714,000 viewers for August. Nashville will return for its fifth season on CMT either later in 2017 or sometime in 2018.

Queen of the South – The USA Network drama aired the final five episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 3 – 1 million
August 10 – 1.2 million
August 17 – 1.2 million
August 24 – 1.2 million
August 31 – 1.3 million (Season Finale)

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for August. A third season of Queen of the South has been ordered by the USA Network, and is expected to air sometime in 2018.

The Mist – The new Spike TV series, based on a story by Stephen King, aired the final four episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 3 – 400,000 viewers
August 10 – 374,000 viewers
August 17 – 399,000 viewers
August 24 – 405,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 395,000 viewers for August. Spike TV has yet to announce if The Mist will be given a second season renewal.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – The Bravo drama premiered its fourth season on August 17, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 17 – 377,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
August 24 – 363,000 viewers
August 31 – 373,000 viewers

This averages out to 371,000 viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 7 with the next new episode of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is set to air on Bravo on Thursday, September 14 at 10 PM.

FRIDAYS:

Killjoys – The sci-fi series aired four new episodes during the month of August as well as the season finale on September 1. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 4 – 655,000 viewers
August 11 – 644,000 viewers
August 18 – 623,000 viewers
August 25 – 628,000 viewers
September 1 – 589,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 628,000 viewers for that time period. Killjoys will return to Syfy for a fourth season sometime in 2018.

Dark Matter – The sci-fi series aired the final four new episodes of its third season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 4 – 639,000 viewers
August 11 – 602,000 viewers
August 18 – 642,000 viewers
August 25 – 686,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 642,000 viewers for August. Sadly, Syfy chose not to renew Dark Matter for a fourth season.

Wynonna Earp – The fantasy drama aired the final four new episodes of its second season on Syfy during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 4 – 531,000 viewers
August 11 – 473,000 viewers
August 18 – 478,000 viewers
August 25 – 439,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 480,000 viewers for August. Wynonna Earp has been renewed for a third season by Syfy.

SATURDAYS:

Orphan Black – The final two episodes of the fifth and final season of the acclaimed BBC America series aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 5 – 305,000 viewers
August 12 – 376,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 340,000 viewers for August.

Turn: Washington’s Spies – The final two episodes of AMC period piece dramas fourth and final season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 5 – 643,000 viewers
August 12 – 746,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 695,000 viewers for August.

Halt and Catch Fire – The fourth and final season of the period piece AMC drama aired a two-hour premiere on August 19, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 19 – 340,000 viewers (Two-Hour Premiere)
August 26 – 270,000 viewers

This averages out to 305,000 viewers for August. No new episode aired on September 2. A new episode aired on September 9 with the next new episode of Halt and Catch Fire set to air on AMC on Saturday, September 16 at 9 PM.

SUNDAYS:

Twin Peaks: The Return – Four more new episodes of the creepy world created by David Lynch aired on Showtime during the month as well as the last two episodes airing on September 3. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 280,000 viewers
August 13 – 253,000 viewers
August 20 – 329,000 viewers
August 27 – 267,000 viewers
September 3 – 254,000 viewers (Finale – Hour 1)
September 3 – 240,000 viewers (Finale – Hour 2)

This averages out to 271,000 viewers for that time period. A new season of Twin Peaks: The Return has yet to be announced by Showtime.

Power – The Starz drama aired five new episodes of its fourth season during August as well as the season finale on September 3. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 1.7 million
August 13 – 1.8 million
August 20 – 1.9 million
August 27 – No Episode Aired
September 3 – 2 million (Season Finale)

This averages out to 1.9 million viewers for that time period. Power has been renewed for a fifth season by Starz and should air sometime in 2018.

The Strain – The FX gore-fest aired four new episodes of its fourth and final season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 1.2 million
August 13 – 933,000 viewers
August 20 – 794,000 viewers
August 27 – 889,000 viewers

This averages out to 954,000 viewers for August. New episodes aired on September 3 and September 10 with the season finale of The Strain set to air on FX on Sunday, September 17 at 10 PM.

Game of Thrones – The HBO hit series aired the final four episodes from its seventh season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 10.2 million
August 13 – 10.7 million
August 20 – 10.2 million
August 27 – 12.1 million (Season Finale)

This averages out to 10.8 million viewers for August. The final season of Games of Thrones will return to HBO either sometime in 2018 or 2019.

Teen Wolf – The rest of the sixth and final season of the MTV thriller aired four new episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 470,000 viewers
August 13 – 435,000 viewers
August 20 – 448,000 viewers (Hour 1)
August 20 – 379,000 viewers (Hour 2)
August 27 – No Episode Aired

This averages out to 433,000 viewers for August. New episodes aired on September 3 and September 10 with the next two new episodes of Teen Wolf set to air on MTV on Sunday, September 17 at 8 and 9 PM.

Chesapeake Shores – The second season of the Hallmark Channel family drama premiered on August 6, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 1.9 million (Season Premiere)
August 13 – 1.6 million
August 20 – 1.8 million
August 27 – 1.7 million

This averages out to 1.8 million viewers for August. New episodes aired on September 3 and September 10 with the next new episode of Chesapeake Shores set to air on Hallmark Channel on Sunday, September 17 at 8 PM.

Ray Donovan – The Showtime crime drama premiered its fifth season on August 6, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 1.1 million (Season Premiere)
August 13 – 1.1 million
August 20 – 1.1 million
August 27 – 1.1 million

This (naturally) averages out to 1.1 million for August. No episode aired on September 3. A new episode aired on September 10 with the next new episode of Ray Donovan set to air on Showtime on Sunday, September 17 at 9 PM.

The Last Ship – The TNT post-apocalyptic drama returned for the start of its fourth season with two back-to-back episodes on August 20, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 20 – 1.9 million (Season Premiere – Hour 1)
August 20 – 1.7 million (Season Premiere – Hour 2)
August 27 – 1.6 million

This averages out to 1.7 million viewers for August. New episodes aired on September 3 and September 10 with the next new episode of The Last Ship set to air on TNT on Sunday, September 17 at 9 PM.

Endeavour – The fourth season of the British drama premiered on PBS on August 20, airing two episodes during the month, but no ratings could be tracked down. A new episode aired on September 3 while the season finale of Endeavour aired on PBS on Sunday, September 10 at 9 PM. If ratings can be found for those episodes, they will be provided in next month’s report.
