With the holidays behind us, there were plenty of cable dramas to watch as well as about a dozen made-for-TV movies. Let’s first take a look at how all of the cable dramas performed during the month of January.

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

The Alienist – The new TNT period drama debuted on January 22, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 22 – 2.1 million viewers (Debut)
January 29 – 1.9 million viewers

This averages out to 2 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 5 with the next new episode of The Alienist set to air on TNT on Monday, February 12 at 9 PM.

TUESDAYS:

Major Crimes – The final two episodes of the sixth and final season of the TNT police drama aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 2 – 2.2 million viewers
January 9 – 2.3 million viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 2.3 million viewers for January.

The Fosters – The Freeform drama returned for the start of its fifth season on January 9, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 9 – 517,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 16 – 703,000 viewers
January 23 – 616,000 viewers
January 30 – 560,000 viewers

This averages out to 599,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of The Fosters set to air on Freeform on Tuesday, February 13 at 8 PM.

The Haves and the Have Nots – The OWN drama returned for the start of its fifth season on January 9, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 9 – 2.3 million viewers (Season Premiere)
January 16 – 2.3 million viewers
January 23 – 2.2 million viewers
January 30 – 2.2 million viewers

This averages out to 2.3 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of The Haves and the Have Nots set to air on OWN on Tuesday, February 13 at 9 PM.

The Quad – The BET drama aired its second season premiere on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 23 – 571,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 30 – 631,000 viewers

This averages out to 601,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of The Quad set to air on BET on Tuesday, February 13 at 10 PM.

Bellevue – The new WGN America drama debuted on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 23 – 412,000 viewers (Debut)
January 30 – 240,000 viewers

This averages out to 326,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of Bellevue set to air on WGN America on Tuesday, February 13 at 10 PM.

WEDNESDAYS:

Vikings – The History Channel period piece drama aired the final four episodes of its fifth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 3 – 2 million viewers
January 10 – 2.1 million viewers
January 17 – 2.2 million viewers
January 24 – 2.2 million viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 2.1 million viewers for January. Vikings will return for a sixth season on the History Channel at some point this year.

Knightfall – The new History Channel drama aired five episodes during January with its season finale airing on February 7. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 3 – 1.2 million viewers
January 10 – 1.2 million viewers
January 17 – 1.1 million viewers
January 24 – 1.2 million viewers
January 31 – 1 million viewers
February 7 – 1 million viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for January. A second season of Knightfall has yet to be announced by the History Channel.

Happy – The live-animation Syfy series aired the final four episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 3 – No episode aired
January 10 – 623,000 viewers
January 17 – 617,000 viewers
January 24 – 518,000 viewers
January 31 – 540,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 575,000 viewers for January. Happy will return for a second season on Syfy sometime later this year.

The Librarians – The TNT drama aired five new episodes of its fourth season during January with its season finale airing on February 7. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 3 – 1.2 million viewers
January 10 – 1.4 million viewers
January 17 – 1.3 million viewers
January 24 – 1.4 million viewers
January 31 – 1.3 million viewers
February 7 – 1.4 million viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 1.3 million viewers for January. The Librarians has yet to be renewed by TNT for a 5th season.

The Magicians – The magical-laced Syfy drama premiered on January 10, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 10 – 782,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 17 – 762,000 viewers
January 24 – 607,000 viewers
January 31 – 669,000 viewers

This averages out to 705,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of The Magicians set to air on Syfy on Wednesday, February 14 at 9 PM.

If Loving You Is Wrong – The OWN drama returned for the rest of its fourth season on January 10, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 10 – 1.4 million viewers (Mid-Season Return)
January 17 – 1.6 million viewers
January 24 – 1.5 million viewers
January 31 – 1.5 million viewers

This averages out to 1.5 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of If Loving You Is Wrong set to air on OWN on Wednesday, February 14 at 10 PM.

Waco – The 6-part Paramount Network event series debuted on January 24, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 24 – 1.1 million viewers (Debut)
January 31 – 737,000 viewers

This averages out to 919,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of Waco set to air on the Paramount Network on Wednesday, February 14 at 10 PM.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story – The second season of the limited series FX franchise, focusing on the death of legendary designer, debuted on January 17, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 17 – 2.2 million viewers (Season Premiere)
January 24 – 1.4 million viewers
January 31 – 1.3 million viewers

This averages out to 1.6 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episodes of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story set to air on FX on Wednesday, February 14 at 10 PM.

THURSDAYS:

Damnation – The 1930’s-based drama aired the final three episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 4 – 628,000 viewers
January 11 – 519,000 viewers
January 18 – 629,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 529,000 viewers for January. Damnation was cancelled by the USA Network after one season

Nashville – The sixth and final season of the former ABC hit series premiered on January 4, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 4 – 873,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 11 – 783,000 viewers
January 18 – 728,000 viewers
January 25 – 802,000 viewers

This averages out to 797,000 viewers for January. New episodes aired on February 1 and February 8 with the next new episode of Nashville set to air on CMT on Thursday, February 15 at 9 PM.

Beyond – The Freeform fantasy series returned for its second season on January 18 with a 2-hour premiere, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 18 – 312,000 viewers (Two-Hour Season Premiere)
January 25 – 234,000 viewers

This averages out to 182,000 viewers for January. New episodes aired on February 1 and February 8 with the next new episode of Beyond set to air on Freeform on Thursday, February 15 at 8 PM.

Van Helsing – The Syfy thriller aired the season finale of its second season on January 4, earning 477,000 viewers. Van Helsing was renewed for a third season, returning at some point later in 2018.

Ghost Wars – The new thriller aired its final episode on Syfy on January 4, earning 338,000 viewers. Syfy has yet to announce if Ghost Wars will have a second season.

FRIDAYS:

There were no cable dramas airing on Friday nights throughout January.

SATURDAYS:

There were no cable dramas airing on Saturday nights throughout January.

SUNDAYS:

The Chi – The new Showtime drama debuted on January 7, airing four new episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 7 – 533,000 viewers (Debut)
January 14 – 570,000 viewers
January 21 – 707,000 viewers
January 28 – 751,000 viewers

This averages out 640,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 11 with the next new episode of The Chi set to air on Showtime on Sunday, February 18 at 10 PM.

Counterpart – The new Starz drama debuted on January 21, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 21 – 391,000 viewers (Debut)
January 28 – 506,000 viewers

This averages out to 449,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 11 with the next new episode of Counterpart set to air on Starz on Sunday, February 18 at 8 PM.

Victoria – The second season of the period piece drama premiered on January 14, airing three episodes during the month, but no ratings could be tracked down for those episodes. New episodes aired on February 4 and February 11 with the next new episode of Victoria set to air on PBS on Sunday, February 18 at 9 PM.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES AND MINI-SERIES

The 6-part HBO mini-series Mosaic aired each night over the course of Monday, January 22 through Friday, January 26, earning the following ratings:

January 22 – 273,000 viewers
January 23 – 71,000 viewers
January 24 – 197,000 viewers
January 25 – 221,000 viewers
January 26 – 229,000 viewers (Part 1 of Finale)
January 26 – 189,000 viewers (Part 2 of Finale)

This averages out to 197,000 viewers. HBO has yet to announce if there will be a second season of Mosaic.

There were almost an even dozen made-for-TV movies airing during January. Here are the ratings that could be tracked down for most of those movies:

One Winter Weekend (Hallmark Channel) – 3 million viewers
Love on the Slopes (Hallmark Channel) – 2.8 million viewers
Frozen in Love (Hallmark Channel) – 2.6 million viewers
Winter’s Dream (Hallmark Channel) – 2.6 million viewers
Faith Under Fire: The Antoinette Tuff Story (Lifetime) – 2.1 million viewers
Cocaine Godmother: The Griselda Blanco Story (Lifetime) – 1.8 million viewers
Aurora Teagarden Mystery: Last Scene Alive (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.3 million viewers
Morning Show Murders: Mortal Mishaps (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.3 million viewers
Past Malice: An Emma Fielding Mystery (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.2 million viewers
Tale of Two Coreys (Lifetime) – 885,000 viewers

No ratings could be tracked down for the following made-for-TV movie that aired during January:

CASTING NEWS

Newcomer Murray Fraser and Parisa Fitz-Henley (Midnight, Texas and Jessica Jones) will portray Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle in the upcoming Lifetime movie Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance that will chronicle the courtship and love story. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Actor Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon and The Killing) and actresses Mireille Enos (The Killing and Catch) and newcomer Esme Creed-Miles will star in the series adaptation of the action film Hanna that received a straight-to-series order at Amazon. The film follows the journey of a young girl with extraordinary skills as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is. Enos will play Marissa, an efficient and ruthless agent, having risen up the ranks of the CIA. However, beneath her cool exterior is a deeply buried secret that continues to haunt her. The reappearance of Hanna and her father Erik threaten to expose the past she has worked to repress. Kinnaman will play Erik, a hardened, intuitive and uncompromising soldier and mercenary, who, for the past 15 years, has raised his daughter in the remote forests of northern Poland. Isolated from the world he once knew, he has trained Hanna in every method of survival, with his only goal, to keep her safe. But, his teenage daughter begins to seek freedom from the restricted haven he has created. Creed-Miles will play the title character. (Variety)

Actor Eric Johnson (Smallville and 50 Shades franchise) will star in season six of the History Channel series Vikings, playing Erik, a formidable warrior who is an outlaw living on his wits and martial skills. (Press Release)

Actress Jaz Sinclair (The Vampire Diaries) will star opposite Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) in the upcoming Netflix Sabrina-themed Riverdale spin-off. The series was picked up for two seasons. Sinclair will play Rosalind Walker, the brash, empowered and outspoken daughter of Greendale’s minister and Sabrina’s best friend at Baxter High. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Actor Scott Speedman (Animal Kingdom) will appear in Grey’s Anatomy in a “top secret role.” (TV Guide)

Actress Megan Follows (Reign and Anne of Green Gables) will play Michelle, Wynonna’s “resurrected” birth mother. (Deadline and The Futon Critic)

Actress Kim Delaney (Army Wives) will appear in Chicago Fire, playing Jennifer Sheridan, mother of Kelly Severide (series regular Taylor Kinney). (Deadline)

Actress Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) will appear in season three of HBO’s anthology drama True Detective, playing Lucy Purcell, a mother of two children who finds herself involved in a crime. (The Hollywood Reporter and TV Line)

Actor Eric Winter (Rosewood and Witches of East End) and actresses Afton Williamson (The Breaks and Banshee) and Melissa O’Neil (Dark Matter) will appear in the straight-to-series ABC drama The Rookie alongside Nathan Fillion (Castle and Firefly). Inspired by a true story, the series follows John Nolan (Fillion), the oldest rookie in the LAPD. Williamson will play Talia Bishop, a newly promoted training officer whose first assignment is Fillion’s 40-year-old rookie. Winter will play Tim Bradford, an overbearing training officer. O’Neil will play Lucy, a rookie cop in the LAPD who struggles with a domineering training officer and might be developing a budding romance with Nolan. (Variety and Deadline)

Actor Philip Winchester (Chicago Justice) has been promoted to series regular on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. While Raul Esparza will be exiting the series after 6 years. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Actress Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers franchise) will star in the 10-episode straight-to-series ½ hour Facebook dramedy tentatively titled Widow, which premise is not being revealed yet, but it’s believed that Olsen will be playing a young widow dealing with grief while reconnecting with relationships from her past. (Deadline)

MOVIE CASTING NEWS

Actor Matt Smith (The Crown and Doctor Who) will play Charles Manson in the independent feature Charlie Says that will focus on the three young women who were sentenced to death following the 1969 murders that were ordered by Manson. After California abolished the death penalty, their sentences were commuted to life in prison. The film will follow their transformations as they face the reality of their crimes. (Variety)

CANCELLATION

Once Upon a Time will come to an end at the end of its current, seventh season on ABC. (Variety)

Actor Craig McGinlay has landed a role in Season 4 of Outlander. He will play Andrew MacNeil, a plantation owner near the Cape Fear River and a prominent member of the Scottish community where Jamie and Claire end up living now that they are in America.

McGinlay has appeared in the box office film King Arthur: Knights of the Round Table and the History Channel series Knightfall.

The fourth season of Outlander is being filmed currently, but an official premiere date has yet to be set by Starz. It is believed the show will return with new episodes later this year, though.

Young Catherine Langford (Ellie Gall from A Place to Call Home) embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save the Earth from darkness.

The cast includes Connor Trinneer, Philip Alexander and Shvan Aladdin.

The Sundance Now streaming series This Close will debut online on February 14.

The series is created, written and stars Shoshannah Stern (Jericho and Supernatural) and Josh Feldman as it explores the relationship between best friends Kate (Stern), who is newly engaged, and Michael (Feldman), who is attempting to move on from his ex-fiance.

The cast includes Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Colt Prattes (Dirty Dancing) and Marlee Matlin (Switched at Birth).
