It’s the start of another year, and there were plenty of TV options on the cable networks this month both with one-hour dramas and made-for-TV movies.
Let’s first take a look at how the cable network dramas fared in the ratings for the month of January:
CABLE DRAMAS
MONDAYS:
I Am the Night – The new TNT drama starring Chris Pine aired a sneak peek episode on Sunday, January 24, but officially debuted on Monday, January 25. The ratings for the Sunday sneak peek were 1 million viewers. A new episode of I Am the Night aired on February 4 with the next new episode set to air on TNT on Monday, February 11 at 9 PM.
TUESDAYS:
Doctor Who – The special event episode of the long-running sci-fi drama aired on New Year’s Day, earning 983,000 viewers. Doctor Who won’t be back with new episodes on BBC America until sometime in early 2020.
Good Trouble – The spin-off series from The Fosters debuted on Tuesday, January 8, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 8 – 413,000 viewers (DEBUT)
January 15 – 331,000 viewers
January 22 – 330,000 viewers
January 29 – 310,000 viewers
This averages out to 346,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 5 with the next new episode of Good Trouble will air on Freeform on Tuesday, February 12 at 8 PM.
Project Blue Book – The period piece History Channel drama debuted on January 8, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 8 – 2.3 million viewers (DEBUT)
January 15 – 1.9 million viewers
January 22 – 1.9 million viewers
January 29 – 1.7 million viewers
This averages out to 2 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 5 with the next new episode of Project Blue Book set to air on the History Channel on Tuesday, February 12 at 10 PM.
The Haves and the Have Nots – The popular OWN soap opera returned for the start of its 6th season on January 8, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 8 – 1.7 million viewers (Premiere)
January 15 – 1.8 million viewers
January 22 – 1.8 million viewers
January 29 – 1.9 million viewers
This averages out to 1.8 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 5 with the next new episode of The Haves and the Have Nots set to air on OWN on Tuesday, February 12 at 9 PM.
WEDNESDAYS:
Vikings – The final five new episodes of the fifth season of the History Channel drama aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 2 – 1.6 million viewers
January 9 – 1.5 million viewers
January 16 – 1.7 million viewers
January 23 – 1.7 million viewers
January 30 – 1.9 million viewers (Season Finale)
This averages out to 1.7 million viewers for January. Vikings will be back for its final season on the History Channel sometime later in 2019.
Deadly Class – The Syfy adaptation of the comic book of the same name debuted on January 16, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 16 – 598,000 viewers (DEBUT)
January 23 – 438,000 viewers
January 30 – 435,000 viewers
This averages out to 490,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of Deadly Class set to air on Syfy on Wednesday, February 13 at 10 PM.
Suits – The long-running legal drama returned for the rest of its 8th season on the USA Network on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 23 – 824,000 viewers (Mid-Season Return)
January 30 – 911,000 viewers
This averages out to 868,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of Suits set to air on the USA Network on Wednesday, February 13 at 10 PM.
The Magicians – The Syfy fantasy series returned for the start of its fourth season on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 23 – 611,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 30 – 534,000 viewers
This averages out to 573,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of The Magicians set to air on Syfy on Wednesday, February 13 at 9 PM.
Pure – The WGN America Mennonite-based drama debuted on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 23 – 398,000 viewers (DEBUT)
January 30 – 277,000 viewers
This averages out to 338,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of Pure set to air on WGN America on Wednesday, February 13 at 10 PM.
THURSDAYS:
Siren – The mermaid-themed Freeform fantasy drama returned for the start of its second season on January 24, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 24 – 709,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 31 – 529,000 viewers
This averages out to 619,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episodes of Siren set to air on Freeform on Thursday, February 14 at 8 PM.
FRIDAYS:
Strike Back – The military-themed Cinemax drama returned for the start of its second season on January 25, earning 116,000 viewers. New episodes aired on February 1 and February 8 with the next new episode of Strike Back set to air on Cinemax on Friday, February 15 at 10 PM.
SATURDAYS:
No cable dramas aired on Saturday nights during the month.
SUNDAYS:
Outlander – The time-travel, adventure drama aired the final four episodes of its fourth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 6 – 1.2 million viewers
January 13 – 1.3 million viewers
January 20 – 1.3 million viewers
January 27 – 1.5 million viewers (Season Finale)
This averages out to 1.3 million viewers for January. Outlander will return for its 5th season on Starz, most likely, sometime in late 2020.
Counterpart – The Starz sci-fi thriller aired three new episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 6 – 244,000 viewers
January 13 – No episode aired
January 20 – 267,000 viewers
January 27 – 262,000 viewers
This averages out to 258,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 3 with the next new episode of Counterpart set to air on Starz on Sunday, February 10 at 8 PM.
Ray Donovan – The Showtime drama aired the last two episodes of its sixth season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 6 – 1 million viewers
January 13 – 1.2 million viewers (Season Finale)
This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for January. Ray Donovan will be back for its 7th season on Showtime sometime later this year.
Dirty John – The Bravo drama aired five new episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 6 – 1.5 million viewers
January 13 – 1.8 million viewers (Season Finale)
This averages out to 1.7 million viewers during January. Dirty John will return to Bravo for a second season sometime in 2019.
Valley of the Boom – The 80’s-centric National Geographic Channel drama debuted on January 13, airing all six episodes of its debut season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 13 (Episode 1) – 415,000 viewers (DEBUT)
January 13 (Episode 2) – 312,000 viewers
January 20 (Episode 1) – 196,000 viewers
January 20 (Episode 2) – 151,000 viewers
January 27 (Episode 1) – 246,000 viewers
January 27 (Episode 2) – 146,000 viewers (Finale)
This averages out to 244,000 viewers for January. National Geographic has yet to give Valley of the Boom a second season order.
True Detective – The HBO drama premiered its third season on January 13, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 13 – 1.4 million viewers (Season Premiere)
January 20 – 1.1 million viewers
January 27 – 1.5 million viewers
This averages out to 1.3 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 3 with the next new episode of True Detective set to air on HBO on Sunday, February 10 at 9 PM.
Berlin Station – The EPIX spy drama aired four new episodes of its third season during the month, but no ratings could be tracked down. A new episode aired on February 3 with the next new episode of Berlin Station set to air on EPIX on Sunday, February 10 at 9 PM.
Victoria – The PBS drama returned for the start of its third season on January 20, airing two episodes during the month, but no ratings could be tracked down. A new episode aired on February 3 with the next new episode of Victoria set to air on PBS on Sunday, February 10 at 9 PM.
MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES AND MINI-SERIES
There were 11 made-for-TV movies that aired during January. Here are the ratings for those that could be tracked down:
Rent Live (FOX) – 3.4 million viewers
Winter Castle (Hallmark Channel) – 3 million viewers
One Winter Proposal (Hallmark Channel) – 2.9 million viewers
Snowcoming (Hallmark Channel) – 2.9 million viewers
Winter Love Story (Hallmark Channel) – 2.7 million viewers
A Winter Princess (Hallmark Channel) – 2 million viewers
Mystery 101 (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.5 million viewers
Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (Lifetime) – 1.3 million viewers
Ruby Herring Mysteries: Silent Witness (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.2 million viewers
Brexit (HBO) – 261,000 viewers
Three’s Complicated (TV One) – 185,000 viewers
