Here is the list of the programming options to expect on TV this coming week:

On September 14, the 6-episode limited drama The Third Day will debut on HBO at 9 PM followed by the debut the 8-episode new drama We Are Who We Are at 10 PM.

The Third Day: The first three episodes are called “Summer” and the latter three episodes are called “Winter.” Jude Law stars in “Summer” as Sam, a man who is drawn to a mysterious island off the British coast where he encounters a group of islanders set on preserving their traditions at any cost. Isolated from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave the idyllic and dangerously enchanting world he has discovered, where the secretive rituals of its inhabitants bring him to grapple with experiences of loss and trauma hidden in his past through the distorted lens of the present. As boundaries between fantasy and reality fragment, his quest to unlock the truth leads the islanders to reveal a shocking secret. In “Winter” Naomie Harris (from the box office film Moonlight) as Helen, a strong-willed outsider who comes to the island seeking answers, but whose arrival precipitates a fractious battle to decide its fate as the lines between fantasy and fact are distorted. The series also stars Katherine Waterston and Emily Watson.

We Are Who We Are: The series tells the story of two American kids (Jack Dylan Grazer and Jordan Kristine Seamon), who live on a U.S. military base in Italy, the series explores friendship, first-love, identity, and immerses the audience in all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager. The drama also stars Alice Braga and Chloe Sevigny.

The Netflix film The Devil All the Time will debut online on September 16. Set in Ohio between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Vietnam War, the film follows a non-linear storyline of various disturbed people who suffer from the damages of the post-war, and crime. The ensemble cast includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Jason Clarke, Bill Skarsgard, Mia Wasikowska, Riley Keough, Haley Bennett and Eliza Scanlen.

Also on September 16, the 55th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards will debut on CBS at 8 PM.

The new Peacock drama Departure will debut online on September 17. Passenger plane Flight 716 shockingly vanishes, and brilliant investigator Kendra Malley (Archie Panjabi from The Good Wife), alongside her mentor Howard Lawson (veteran actor Christopher Plummer) are brought on to lead the investigation. When battling forces threaten to undermine their work, Kendra must find the truth and stop it from happening again. The series also stars Kris Holden-Reid (The Umbrella Academy and Lost Girl), Rebecca Liddiard (Frankie Drake Mysteries), Peter Mensah (Midnight, Texas) and Sasha Roiz (Grimm and Suits).

On September 18, the new Netflix series Ratched will debut online. When Jo realizes that her family’s general store in Daisy Hills is losing money, her father Duke calls in a favor to help. Duke’s help is Jo’s ex-boyfriend, Blake, former Daisy Hills native. The film stars Cindy Busby and Marshall Williams.

On September 20, the movie Cookie Mobster will debut on UPtv at 7 PM. After finding himself in the witness relocation program, a reformed mobster (Rick Malambri) comes to the aid of a local girl scout troop and starts falling for one of the single mothers. The film also stars Pippa Black, Mackenzie Foy and Lainie Kazan.

Lastly, also on September 20, the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards will air on ABC at 8 PM.

RENEWALS

Doom Patrol has been renewed for third season at HBO Max. (Variety)

Netflix has given a season two order to Julie and the Phantoms, which debuted on the streaming service on September 10. (The Cinema Spot)

Showtime has renewed The Chi for a 4th season. (Variety)

The Walking Dead will come to an end after the upcoming 11th season on AMC. (Variety)

PICK-UP ORDERS

AMC has ordered a spin-off series for The Walking Dead that will be built around the characters of Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). (Variety)

Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network are teaming to co-produce a limited series that will star Jessica Chastain as country music legend Tammy Wynette. After a nine-month exclusive run for Spectrum subscribers, the series called George & Tammy, will have a second window on Viacom, the forthcoming CBS streaming service and Paramount Network. The series will chronicle the country music power couple, Wynette and George Jones, whose complicated relationship inspired some of the most iconic music of all time. (Variety)

Peacock has picked up two seasons of the planned drama series reboot of the classic sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to be called simply Bel-Air. Set in modern-day America, the serialized one-hour dramatic reimagining of the 90’s sitcom that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. CASTING NEWS

Actress Lisseth Chavez (Chicago P.D.) has joined the cast of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, playing Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz, an alien expert, who joins the “time ship crew in Season 6, which finds co-captains Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe and their team hunting down extraterrestrials who have been displaced throughout history.” (Variety)

Actress Shivaani Ghai (Dominion and The Catch) will recur on Batwoman for Season 2, playing Safiyah, the fiercely protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana. A woman with as many enemies as aliases. She is compassionate and charismatic with both physical and psychological prowess. She is beloved by her people and will stop at nothing to protect what’s hers. (Deadline and The Futon Critic)

Actor Caleb Castille, who has been recurring as FBI Agent Devin Rountree on NCIS: Los Angeles, has been promoted to series regular. (Deadline and The Futon Critic)

Summer is over and the fall TV season should be underway, but with the Coronavirus pandemic still gripping our country by the throat, TV as we know it is not happening.

That being said, though, we’ve got plenty of cable TV to review for July and August.

Let’s take a look at the ratings for the dramas first:

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

There were no cable dramas airing on Mondays in July or August.

TUESDAYS:

Greenleaf – The OWN drama returned for the start of its 5th and final season on June 23, running straight through July, and ending on August 11. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

June 23 – 1.3 million viewers (Season Premiere – Final Season)
June 30 – 1.1 million viewers
July 7 – 1.3 million viewers
July 14 – 1.2 million viewers
July 21 – 1.2 million viewers
July 28 – 1.4 million viewers
August 4 – 1.3 million viewers
August 11 – 1.4 million viewers (Series Finale)

This average out to 1.3 million viewers for that time frame.

Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story – The anthology series aired the final two episodes of its current season during July. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 7 – 752,000 viewers
July 14 – 838,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 795,000 viewers for July. A third season of Dirty John has yet to be renewed by the USA Network.

The Haves and the Have Nots – The long-running OWN soap opera returned for the start of its 7th season with a two-hour premiere on August 25, earning 1.1 and 1.2 million viewers respectively. New episodes aired on September 1 and September 8 with the next new episode of The Haves and the Have Nots set to air on OWN on Tuesday, September 15 at 8 PM.

WEDNESDAYS:

There were no cable dramas airing on Wednesdays in July or August.

THURSDAYS:

The Bold Type – The Freeform drama aired the final remaining episodes of its fourth season during July. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 2 – 168,000 viewers
July 9 – 184,000 viewers
July 16 – 202,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 185,000 viewers for July. Freeform has yet to renew The Bold Type for a fifth season.

FRIDAYS:

Trackers – The South African-based crime drama aired the final two episodes of its debut season on Cinemax during July, but only ratings for the final episode could be tracked down. That finale earned 48,000 viewers. Trackers has yet to be renewed for a second season, however.

800 Words – The popular Australian family drama debuted on UPtv on July 24, airing two episodes every week through August 21 followed by airing the first episode of its second season on August 28. Unfortunately, no ratings could be tracked down for any of those episodes. A new episode of 800 Words aired on September 4 with the next new episode of 800 Words set to air on UPtv on Friday. September 11.

SATURDAYS:

Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime – The 2015 mystery series ended its run on Ovation during July, airing its final three episodes. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 4 – No episode aired because of the holiday
July 11 – 139,000 viewers
July 18 – 98,000 viewers
July 25 – 144,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to approximately 127,000 viewers for July.

The Code – The Australian crime drama from 2014 debuted on Ovation, airing five of its six episodes during August and its season finale on September 5. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 109,000 viewers
August 8 – 26,000 viewers (approximately)
August 15 – 22,000 viewers (approximately)
August 22 – No ratings could be tracked down
August 29 – No ratings could be tracked down
September 5 – 44,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to approximately 50,000 viewers. There was a second season of The Code in 2016, but there is no word whether Ovation will air that season or not.

SUNDAYS:

Hightown – This new crime drama aired its season finale on Starz on July 12 (no episode aired on July 5 because of the holiday weekend), earning 330,000 viewers. Hightown has been renewed by Starz for a second season.

Snowpiercer – The TNT adaptation of the box office movie aired the final three episodes of its debut season during July. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 5 – 1.1 million viewers
July 12 – 1.3 million viewers (Season Finale, Hour 1)
July 12 – 1.2 million viewers (Season Finale, Hour 2)

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for July. Snowpiercer was renewed by TNT for a second season.

NOS4A2 – The thriller aired the remaining 8 episodes of its second season during July and August simultaneously on both AMC and BBC America. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

AMC:
July 5 – 385,000 viewers
July 12 – 341,000 viewers
July 19 – 410,000 viewers
July 26 – 404,000 viewers
August 2 – 360,000 viewers
August 9 – 333,000 viewers
August 16 – 347,000 viewers
August 26 – 353,000 viewers (Series Finale)

BBC America:
July 5 – 82,000 viewers
July 12 – 82,000 viewers
July 19 – 101,000 viewers
July 26 – 65,000 viewers
August 2 – 80,000 viewers
August 9 – 162,000 viewers
August 16 – 130,000 viewers
August 26 – 107,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 367,000 for AMC and 101,000 for BBC America for that time frame. AMC cancelled NOS4A2 after its finale episode aired on August 26.

Yellowstone – The Kevin Costner-led Paramount Network drama aired the remainder of its 3rd season’s episodes during July and August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 5 – 3.7 million viewers
July 12 – 3.6 million viewers
July 19 – 3.7 million viewers
July 26 – 3.7 million viewers
August 2 – 3.6 million viewers
August 9 – 3.8 million viewers
August 16 – 4 million viewers
August 23 – 5.2 million viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 3.9 million viewers for that time frame. Yellowstone has been renewed for a fourth season by the Paramount Network.

The Chi – The coming-of-age, Chicago-based Showtime drama aired the remainder of its third season episodes during July and August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 5 – 351,000 viewers
July 12 – 367,000 viewers
July 19 – 438,000 viewers
July 26 – 525,000 viewers
August 2 – 415,000 viewers
August 9 – 430,000 viewers
August 16 – 384,000 viewers
August 23 – 382,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 412,000 viewers for that time frame. The Chi has been renewed for a fourth season by Showtime.

Perry Mason – The Depression-era set adaptation of the legendary lawyer aired the remaining episodes of its debut season on HBO during July and August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 5 – 950,000 viewers
July 12 – 711,000 viewers
July 19 – 884,000 viewers
July 26 – 959,000 viewers
August 2 – 1 million viewers
August 9 – 1.1 million viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 934,000 viewers for that time frame. Perry Mason has been renewed for a second season by HBO.

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness – The TNT period drama returned for the start of its second season on July 19, airing two episodes each week through August 9. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 19 – 1.3 million viewers (Season Premiere, Hour 1)
July 19 – 1.1 million viewers (Season Premiere, Hour 2)
July 26 – 992,000 viewers
July 26 – 903,000 viewers
August 2 – 1.1 million viewers
August 2 – 827,000 viewers
August 9 – 1 million viewers (Finale, Hour 1)
August 9 – 948,000 viewers (Finale, Hour 2)

This averages out to 1 million viewers for the time frame. The Alienist has yet to be renewed for a third season by TNT.

Wynonna Earp – The fan favorite Syfy thriller returned for its long-awaited 4th season on July 26, airing five new episodes during August, which was its mid-season finale. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

July 26 – 459,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
August 2 – 268,000 viewers
August 9 – 348,000 viewers
August 16 – 230,000 viewers
August 23 – 266,000 viewers
August 31 – 342,000 viewers (Mid-Season Finale)

This averages out to 319,000 viewers for that time frame. The rest of season four of Wynonna Earp will return to Syfy at some point in 2021.

Lovecraft Country – The HBO horror series debuted on August 16, airing 3 episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 16 – 760,000 viewers (DEBUT)
August 23 – 867,000 viewers
August 31 – 747,000 viewers

This averages out to 791,000 viewers for August. New episodes aired on September 6 and September 13 with the next new episode of Lovecraft Country set to air on HBO on Sunday, September 20 at 9 PM.

We Hunt Together – The new Showtime crime drama debuted on August 9, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 9 – 127,000 viewers (DEBUT)
August 16 – 180,000 viewers
August 23 – 117,000 viewers
August 30 – 104,000 viewers

This averages out to 132,000 viewers for August. A new episode aired on September 6 while the season finale aired on September 13. Those ratings will be provided in next month’s report.

Endeavour – The 7th season of the crime series aired on PBS during August, but no ratings could be tracked down for the 3 episodes. Endeavour has yet to be renewed for an 8th season, though.

Britannia – The 2017 fantasy series debuted on EPIX on August 9, airing four episodes during the month. Unfortunately, no ratings could be tracked down for those episodes. A new episode aired on September 13 with the next episode of Brittania set to air on EPIX on Sunday, September 20 at 8 PM.

Grantchester – The PBS period piece drama aired the final three episodes of its fifth season during July, but no ratings could be tracked down for those episodes. Grantchester has been renewed for a 6th season.

Beecham House – The other period piece drama on PBS aired the final three episodes of its debut season during July, but ratings for those episodes could not be tracked down. Unfortunately, Beecham House will not be back for a second season.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES AND MINI-SERIES

There were 7 made-for-TV movies that aired in July and August along with one limited series airing in August.

No ratings could be tracked down for the three made-for-TV movies that aired in July:
