On January 15, the Amazon movie One Night in Miami will debut online.

The first feature film directed by actress Regina King is about a fictionalized meeting of Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) and Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) in a Miami hotel room in February 1964, celebrating Ali’s surprise title win over Sonny Liston.

The cast includes Lance Riddick, Nicolette Robinson, Michael Imperioli, Beau Bridges and Christopher Gorham.

Here is the list of the programming options to expect on TV this coming week:

The Good Doctor returns from its winter break on ABC on January 11 at 10 PM.

On January 12, The CW will debut the Canadian transplant series Trickster at 9 PM. Based on the best-selling novel, the series follows Jared (newcomer Joel Oulette), an Indigenous teen struggling to keep his dysfunctional family above water, but when he starts seeing strange things – talking ravens, doppelgängers, skin monsters – his already chaotic life is turned upside down.

The season premieres of The Resident and Prodigal Son will air on FOX on January 12 at 8 and 9 PM respectively.

On January 13, both SEAL Team and S.W.A.T. will return from their winter breaks on CBS at 9 and 10 PM respectively.

The Hulu feature film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise will debut online on January 15. The film follows Marcus (Keean Johnson), an audio obsessed high school senior who learns he must undergo brain surgery that will render him deaf. He decides to seize control of his fate by recording the Ultimate Playlist of Noise – a bucket list of all his favorite sounds. Once he sets out, he meets Wendy (Madeline Brewer), a wildly charming, struggling musician who is trying to escape to New York for her chance at a life-changing opportunity. Together they check off his list as they make their way across the country, until painful revelations force Marcus to face reality and his future without sound.

On January 15, the second season of the Apple TV+ drama Servant will premiere online.

The Netflix movie Outside the Wire will also debut online on January 15. In the near future, a drone pilot (Damson Idris) sent into a war zone finds himself paired with a top-secret android officer (Anthony Mackie) on a mission to stop a nuclear attack. The cast includes Michael Kelly and Emily Beecham.

On January 15, the long-in-the-waiting Marvel drama WandaVision will finally debut on Disney+. Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are two super-powered beings, who are living idealized suburban lives, but begin to suspect everything is not as it seems. The cast includes Kat Dennings, Kathryn Hahn, Randall Park and Teyonah Parris.

The Hallmark Channel movie Two for the Win will debut at 9 PM on January 16. A world champion ski racer and local ski instructor find romance on the slopes as he returns home and prepares for the biggest race of his life. The movie stars Charlotte Sullivan and Trevor Donovan.

On January 17, the UPtv movie The Baby Proposal will debut at 7 PM. Layla Bennett (Alexandra Chando) has it all figured out: her own place, a thriving career and a loving fiancé. She co-hosts morning show Wake Up Chicago! alongside her charming but sometimes irritating colleague Derek Dray (Mike Merrill). They have different working styles. She likes to be spontaneous and improvise on air, while he’s more of a stick to the script guy. When they’re given the bombshell of caring for a baby together, it’s their worst nightmare. But as they juggle night feeds and nap times with their hectic lives, they can’t deny the growing chemistry. Is this unexpected arrival all they needed to realize they were meant to be?

The CW will premiere the 2nd season of Batwoman on January 17 at 8 PM, with God Friended Me actress Javicia Leslie taking over the lead role.

On January 17, the 6-part PBS series Miss Scarlet & the Duke will debut at 8 PM. Go on the case with private eye Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips), Victorian England’s first-ever female sleuth, as she solves crimes – and sometimes flirts – with her partner and childhood friend, Detective Inspector William “The Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin). The cast includes Kevin Doyle and Andrew Gower (among others).

Also, lastly on January 17, the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie Ships in the Night: A Martha’s Vineyard Mystery will debut at 8 PM. When an art gallery robbery leads to the death of the contemptible gallery manager, former Boston detective Jeff Jackson (Jesse Metcalfe) teams up with local Doctor – and old flame – Dr. Zee Madeiras (Sarah Lind), to catch the killer.

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Roku has bought the majority rights to the original programming provided by the recently defunct Quifi, making more than 75 shows available free to stream in 2021 on the Roku Channel (Variety)

TV CASTING NEWS

Actress Camille Guaty (Scorpion and Daytime Divas) will have a multi-episode arc on The Rookie, playing Sandra De la Cruz, a businesswoman with nefarious connections who has been the target of a murder attempt. (Deadline)

Actor Clancy Brown (Emergence, Billions and Sleepy Hollow) will play the primary villain on the Dexter revival that is in the works at Showtime. Brown will play Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. It’s unclear if Iron Lake will serve as the setting for the 10-episode revival, which will pick up in real-time seven years after the 2013 series finale. The controversial closer sent Dexter into fake death-imposed exile in the woods of Oregon. (TV Line)

Actress Aliyah O’Brien (Rookie Blue and Take Two) has landed a recurring role on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, playing Kayla, a fearsome warrior with a high body count and low patience for human incompetence. (Deadline)

Big screen actress Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago and The Mask of Zorro) will appear in the upcoming season of Prodigal Son, playing Dr. Vivian Capshaw, the on-screen foil to Michael Sheen’s character Martin Whitly. She will appear in the latter half of the season. (TV Line)

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

HBO Max has made it official. The Sex and the City revival, which will have the new title And Just Like That…, will be happening with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon all reprising their roles. Kim Cattral will not be involved in the revival, which will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. A BBC adaptation of the best-selling thriller The Girl Before will star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show) in the lead role of Jane, a traumatized woman who falls in love with an extraordinary minimalist house, which remains under the spell of the architect who originally designed it. When she discovers that another damaged woman died in the same property three years earlier, she starts to wonder if her own story is just a rerun of the girl before. (Deadline)

The CW has decided not to move forward with the Arrow spin-off Green Arrow and the Canaries that would have starred Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake. The network is still thinking about the potential spin-off to The 100 and a number of other new superhero shows. (Variety and Deadline)

Actor Keegan-Michael Key (The Prom) is set to executive produce and star in the ABC drama series based on the August Snow crime novels from author Stephen Mack Jones. The tagline for the show is this: The son of an African-American father and a Mexican-American mother, August grew up in the city’s Mexicantown and joined the police force only to be drummed out by a conspiracy of corrupt cops and politicians. But August fought back; he took on the city and got himself a $12 million wrongful dismissal settlement that left him low on friends. He has just returned to the house he grew up in after a year away, and quickly learns he has many scores to settle. (TV Line and Deadline)

MOVIE CASTING NEWS

Actress Raven Goodwin (The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel) will play legendary actress Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to ever win an Oscar, in the upcoming box office film Behind the Smile. (Deadline)

It’s 2021 folks, and while we’re still dealing with the pandemic – and will be doing so for much of this year (SIGH! ARGH!) – time keeps moving on, and so, too, does TV. There were plenty of cable dramas and lots of made-for-TV movies that aired in November and December.

First, let’s take a look at the ratings for the dramas:

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

Soulmates – The new AMC drama aired the final two episodes of its debut season in November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 2 – 183,000 viewers
November 9 – 163,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 173,000 viewers for November. Soulmates has been renewed by AMC for a second season, and is anticipated to return sometime in 2021.

Industry – The new HBO drama debuted on November 9, airing four episodes during November and four episodes during December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 9 – 89,000 viewers (DEBUT)
November 16 – 127,000 viewers
November 23 – 124,000 viewers
November 30 – 111,000 viewers
December 7 – 116,000 viewers
December 14 – 86,000 viewers
December 21 – 103,000 viewers (Hour 1 – Season Finale)
December 21 – 113,000 viewers (Hour 2 – Season Finale)

This averages out to 109,000 viewers for that time frame. HBO renewed Industry for a second season, and is anticipated to return sometime in 2021.

His Dark Materials – The second season of the HBO fantasy series got started on November 16, airing three episodes in November and four episodes in December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 16 – 227,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
November 23 – 229,000 viewers
November 30 – 234,000 viewers
December 7 – 264,000 viewers
December 14 – 216,000 viewers
December 21 – 202,000 viewers
December 28 – 347,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 246,000 viewers for that time frame. HBO renewed His Dark Materials for a third and final season. The show is anticipated to return sometime in 2021.

TUESDAYS:

The Haves and the Have Nots – The long-running OWN soap opera returned for the start of its 8th season on November 24, airing an additional five episodes during December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 24 – 873,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
December 1 – 1.1 million viewers
December 8 – 969,000 viewers
December 15 – 1.2 million viewers
December 22 – 1.1 million viewers
December 29 – 1.1 million viewers

This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for that time period. A new episode of The Haves and the Have Nots aired on January 5 with the next new episode set to air on OWN on Tuesday, January 12 at 8 PM.

WEDNESDAYS:

The A Word – The third season of the BBC drama aired on Sundance TV, starting on November 4, airing four episodes during the month and its final two episodes in December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 4 – No numbers could be tracked down (Season Premiere)
November 11 – 49,000 viewers
November 18 – 48,000 viewers
November 25 – 79,000 viewers
December 2 – 36,000 viewers
December 9 – 38,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to approximately 50,000 viewers for that time frame. The A Word ended with its third season.

THURSDAYS:

Deutschland 89 – The German drama, a sequel of Deutschland 86 which was a sequel of Deutschland 83, aired three episodes in November on Sundance TV; but ratings could not be tracked down for any of 8 episodes.

FRIDAYS:

800 Words – The popular Australian family drama aired the final four episodes of its second season on UPtv during November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 6 – 95,000 viewers
November 13 – 77,000 viewers
November 20 (Hour 1) – 107,000 viewers (Season Finale)
November 20 (Hour 2) – 92,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 93,000 viewers for November. The season premiere of the third and final season of 800 Words aired on January 8 with the next new episodes set to air on UPtv on Friday, January 15 at 7 PM.

Warrior – The Cinemax drama aired four new episodes in November and its season finale on December 4. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 6 – 83,000 viewers
November 13 – 47,000 viewers
November 20 – 68,000 viewers
November 27 – 65,000 viewers
December 5 – 80,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 69,000 viewers for that time frame. Cinemax has yet to renew Warrior for a third season.

The Astronauts – The Nickelodeon drama about tweeners who inadvertently get sent into space, featuring a great group of adult actors playing their parents, debuted on November 13, airing three episodes during the month and three episodes during December. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 13 – 539,000 viewers (DEBUT)
November 20 – 490,000 viewers
November 27 – 458,000 viewers
December 4 – 427,000 viewers
December 11 – 319,000 viewers
December 18 – 570,000 viewers

This averages out to 467,000 for that time frame. A new episode of The Astronauts aired on Nickelodeon on January 8 with the season finale set to air on Friday, January 15 at 7 PM.

SATURDAYS:

The Fall – The 6 episodes of the second season of the Irish series aired during November and December on Ovation, but ratings for all but the premiere episode could not be tracked down. The third and final season of The Fall got underway on Ovation starting on January 2 with the next new episode set to air Saturday, January 9 at 7 PM.

SUNDAYS:

Power Book II: Ghost – The spin-off series returned on Starz with the rest of its episodes from its debut season starting on December 6, airing four of those episodes in December and its season finale on January 3. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

December 6 – 587,000 viewers (Return)
December 13 – 583,000 viewers
December 20 – 468,000 viewers
December 27 – 560,000 viewers
January 3 – 617,000 (Season Finale)

This averages out to 563,000 viewers for this time period. Starz has renewed Power Book II: Ghost for a second season, and it is anticipated to return sometime in 2021.

Fargo – The FX anthology series aired the final five episodes of its 4th season in November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 649,000 viewers
November 8 – 701,000 viewers
November 15 – 824,000 viewers
November 22 – 805,000 viewers
November 29 – 851,000 viewers (Finale)

This averages out to 766,000 viewers for November. Fargo has yet to be renewed for a fifth season by FX.

The Good Lord Bird – The period piece drama aired the remaining three episodes of its limited run on Showtime during November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 206,000 viewers
November 8 – 190,000 viewers
November 15 – 317,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 238,000 viewers for November. Showtime has not announced if this limited series – The Good Lord Bird – will actually be given a second installment or not.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond – The new AMC spin-off series aired the remaining episodes of its debut season in November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 742,000 viewers
November 8 – 726,000 viewers
November 15 – 783,000 viewers
November 22 – 627,000 viewers
November 29 – 618,000 viewers (2 ½ Hour Season Finale)

This averages out to 582,000 viewers for November. The Walking Dead: World Beyond was given a two season order by AMC, and is anticipated to return at some point in 2021.

Fear the Walking Dead – The zombie AMC series aired the remaining four episodes of the first half of its 6th season in November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 1.3 million viewers
November 8 – 1.2 million viewers
November 15 – 1.3 million viewers
November 22 – 1.1 million viewers (Mid-Season Finale)

This averages out to 1.2 million viewers for November. The last half of the 6th season of Fear the Walking Dead will return to AMC at some point in 2021.

The Spanish Princess – The remaining five episodes of the 2nd season of the Starz period drama aired during November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

November 1 – 233,000 viewers
November 8 – 221,000 viewers
November 15 – 234,000 viewers
November 22 – 290,000 viewers
November 29 – 315,000 viewers (Series Finale)

This averages out to 259,000 viewers for November. The Spanish Princess was only set as a limited series that was to run in two parts that some sources referred to as two separate seasons.

The Undoing – The 6-episode limited series actually debuted on HBO on October 25, airing the rest of its episodes throughout November. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

October 25 – 676,000 viewers (DEBUT)
November 1 – 799,000 viewers
November 8 – 899,000 viewers
November 15 – 1.1 million viewers
November 22 – 1.3 million viewers
November 29 – 1.8 million viewers (Series Finale)

That averages out to 1.1 million viewers for that time frame. There are no current plans by HBO to air another season of The Undoing.

Your Honor – The Bryan Cranston-led Showtime limited series debuted on December 6, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

December 6 – 449,000 viewers (DEBUT)
December 13 – 658,000 viewers
December 20 – 537,000 viewers
December 27 – 467,000 viewers

This averages out to 528,000 viewers for December. A new episode of Your Honor aired January 3 with the next new episode set to air on Showtime tonight, January 10 at 10 PM.

Euphoria – The HBO drama aired a special holiday episode on December 6, earning 236,000 viewers. A second special of Euphoria will air on HBO on Sunday, January 24 at 9 PM.

The Trouble with Maggie Cole – The 6-episode comedic drama aired the remaining four episodes of its debut season on PBS, but ratings could not be tracked down. The Trouble with Maggie has yet to be renewed for a second season.

Cobra – The 6-episode drama aired the last two episodes of its debut season in November on PBS, but ratings could not be tracked down. Cobra has yet to be renewed for a second season.

Roadkill – The 4-part PBS drama debuted in November, airing all its episodes on PBS during the month, but ratings could not be tracked down. Roadkill has yet to be renewed for a second season.

Britannia – The fantasy series aired the remaining 6 episodes of its second season on EPIX during November and December, but ratings could not be tracked down. Britannia has been renewed for a third season, but there is no information on when the show will air here, as it will need to air in the United Kingdom. before it airs here in the States.

Pennyworth – The EPIX drama about Batman’s butler when he was a young man returned for its second season on December 13, airing three episodes during the month along with its mid-season finale on January 3, but no ratings could be tracked down for those episodes. Pennyworth will return for the rest of its second season on Sunday, March 7 on EPIX at 9 PM.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES AND MINI-SERIES

There were 42 made-for-TV movies that aired in November and 39 made-for-TV movies that aired in December along with one limited series that aired in November.

Here are the ratings for the one limited series that aired in November:

Black Narcissus (FX) [November 23 Hour 1] – 445,000 viewers
Black Narcissus (FX) [November 23 Hour 2] – 333,000 viewers
Black Narcissus (FX) [November 23 Hour 3] – 310,000 viewers

This averages out to 363,000 viewers. As this was a limited series, there are no plans for any further seasons of Black Narcissus.
