For many, many years, TV ratings have been the life’s blood of every series whether they are on the major or cable networks. Much like last year, how ratings are determined is still being questioned, but until the time comes that there is an overhaul of the system, I will continue to provide my ratings reports (daily, monthly and annually), making adjustments as needed based on how those upgrades eventually pan out.
Like every year, what is to follow is a very long list of ratings for TV dramas – and only dramas – that have aired on the major and cable networks during the last half of the 2021-2022 TV season and the first half of the 2022-2023 TV season. The numbers provided below are the average of the overnight viewership for each drama; they do not include any additional days or adjustments.
Then at the bottom of this piece, just like in years past, I will provide all of the made-for-TV movies on the major and cable networks where ratings could be tracked down.

The final analyses of all these ratings for both the major and cable networks for the entire year are as follows:
1. For the first time in many years, NCIS is no longer the number one drama on CBS. That mantle has been handed over to the drama FBI with The Equalizer a very close second. NCIS now stands in third place. The lowest rated CBS dramas were Good Sam, which only lasted one season, and CSI: Vegas.
2. Just like last year, ABC can boast that Station 19 is its top rated drama with Grey’s Anatomy a very close second. The two lowest rated dramas for the network were Queens, which actually got cancelled earlier this year and the new drama The Rookie: Feds.
3. The reigning number one drama for FOX is 9-1-1 for yet another year with 9-1-1: Lone Star is a close second for at least the first part of this year. The Resident is a distant third. As for the lowest rated dramas on FOX that goes to Our Kind of People from the first half of the year and Monarch for the latter part of the year. Both of these dramas have been cancelled.
4. This year Chicago Fire holds the top slot for NBC with Chicago Med a close second. The two lowest rated dramas are the Canadian series Transplant and the reboot of Quantum Leap although the latter scored at least double the ratings of Transplant and has been given a full season order for the current TV season and has been given a second season renewal.
5. The CW has sadly faltered a lot in the ratings this year, and the recent majority acquisition by Nexstar is not helping the once titan of the Arrowverse. None of the network’s dramas even broke an average of 1 million viewers with Walker and Superman & Lois in nearly a neck-and-neck fight for the top slot. The two lowest rated dramas were Dynasty and Riverdale.
6. It’s no surprise that the Paramount Network drama Yellowstone has far surpassed any other network drama all year, whether it is cable or major network. While the average overnight rating for Yellowstone is averaging about 8 million viewers, the show is easily pulling in over 12 million viewers every week once all the additional, delayed viewing is added into the mix. That far surpasses any other network drama anywhere on TV. In a far distant second and third place is the family drama When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel and House of the Dragon on HBO respectively. The lowest rated cable dramas were Good Trouble on Freeform and the HBO short-lived series Irma Vep.
The final list – which is extremely long – covers all of the made-for-TV movies, mini-series, event series and specials that aired during 2022 on both the major and cable networks for which ratings could be tracked down.
