Now, it is the baronet who is in financial difficulties, and Anne exists only at her family’s beck and call. For eight long years, Frederick had steeled his heart against her. This book considers constructions of Jane Austen as a heroine, moralist, satirist, romantic, woman, and author and the changing notions of these categories. The author discusses the distinctiveness and distinction of Austen’s genius, clarifying the reasons why we read the novelist—or why we should read her and reorient the prevailing view of her work.

Lizzie Bennet, who attends Longbourn on a scholarship, isn’t interested in designer dresses and expensive shoes, but her best friend, Jane, might be – especially now that Charles Bingley is back from a semester in London. Lizzie is happy about her friend’s burgeoning romance but less than impressed by Charles’s friend, Will Darcy, who’s snobby and pretentious. Darcy doesn’t seem to like Lizzie either, but she assumes it’s because her family doesn’t have money. Clearly, Will Darcy is a pompous jerk – so why does Lizzie find herself drawn to him anyway?

Witnessing his cousin marry for love and not money, as he felt destined to do, Colonel Fitzwilliam refused to be jealous. He did not expect his acquaintance with the Bennet clan to change that. Catherine Bennet, often called Kitty, had not given a great deal of thought to how her life might change with her sisters Elizabeth and Jane becoming wed to rich and connected men. Certainly meeting Darcy’s handsome cousin, a Colonel, did not affect her. But one had to admit that the connections of the Bingleys and Darcys were quite advantageous. All sorts of men desired introductions now that she had such wealthy new brothers. Kitty knew that Lydia may have thought herself fortunate when she had married Wickham, the first Bennet daughter to wed, but Kitty knew that true fortune had come to her. In celebration of the past year in the worlds of television, movies, music and books, the year-end articles that I will be posting over the course of the next week will highlight the best (and in some instances the worst) that each of these entertainment genres had to offer those of us who partake in the enjoyment each medium provides.

But, much like each year, I want to take a moment to look back – selfish though it may be – on some of my personal goals for the year. It was my hope to read 20 books this year, and while I didn’t quite manage that, I did read 18. One of the more interesting books that I read was the debut novel of a new book series by authors J. Gabriel Gates and Charlene Keel called “Dark Territory”. I also fell in love with the fairies trilogy by Carrie Jones, the shape shifter trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater and the Montana-themed romance series by R. C. Ryan. I also highly recommend the independent release by (Ms.) Chris Culler called “Giving Good Hollywood”.

I also had the great opportunity to attend a lot of great TV-related events, including Comic Con in July, the annual Paley Fest in March and the Paley Preview Parties in September. As part of my press ‘duties’ I also attended Wonder Con in April and had the chance to visit the sets of the TV shows The Protector, Pretty Little Liars and the new 2012 summer series Perception.

With that being said, tomorrow I will take a look at the highlights for the year that was – 2011 – starting with the best (and worst) of television.

NOTE: I apologize in advance for any omissions, spelling errors or oversights I may have made, but I don’t apologize for any of the choices I made.

They appear in alphabetical order:

An Assembly Such as This by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
An Assembly Such as This: A Novel Of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman
Released on May 30, 2006

This book retells the now iconic story of Pride and Prejudice through the eyes of Fitzwilliam Darcy as he visits Netherfield with his good friend Charles Bingley and his sisters. The austere Darcy takes life very seriously, and is at a loss as to how he became friends with the amicable Bingley. Darcy has escaped many marriage-minded mothers and their daughters, which is why he initially disdains the Bennet family. Once he gets to know Elizabeth, however, he realizes his mistake, but his attempts to apologize to her only make him act even more awkwardly in her presence.

Duty and Desire by Pamela Aidan

PAMELA AIDAN
Duty and Desire: A Novel of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentlemen
Released on October 3, 2006

This book has Darcy wrestling with his infatuation with Elizabeth Bennet. While Darcy exhibits the class snobbery and noblesse oblige readers expect of him, he also has a purpose: Darcy decides he must find another woman “of his own station as beautiful and blessed with wit as Elizabeth Bennet, whose charms would banish her from his mind and displace her in his heart.” While searching for this woman, Darcy looks after his sister, Georgiana, who is emerging from a long depression.

These Three Remain by Pamela Aidan

While visiting his aunt’s estate, Fitzwilliam continues alternately courting his beloved Elizabeth and trying to crimp his longing for her. He finally musters his courage and, in an arrogant, bumbling way, proposes marriage. He returns to London in defeat, but realizes, after some time and distance, that her rejection has provided him with the opportunity to become a better man. Months later, a fortuitous meeting with Elizabeth offers them the chance to renew their friendship and for Fitzwilliam to prove he has changed for the better. But just as Fitzwilliam is making headway, George Wickham, his smarmy nemesis, appears and threatens to undo everything.

But the road to matrimony is fraught with difficulties and even when she is convinced that she has met the man of her dreams, she quickly discovers that her hero is not the man she believes him to be. Before long his reputation has her running back to Hertfordshire to be reunited with Bennets, Bingleys and Darcys, meeting once again for a grand ball at Netherfield Park. Will she resolve her problems to find happiness or will the shocking truth about her husband cause the greatest scandal of all?

Willoughby's Return by Jane Odiwe

JANE ODIWE
Willoughby’s Return
Released on November 1, 2009

Odiwe’s sequel to Sense and Sensibility is best at recalling Austen’s descriptive abilities, but falls short in its treatment of Austen’s beloved characters. Three years after Marianne and Col. William Brandon get married, they’re still unable to discuss two critical and intertwined issues: namely, that Marianne feels jealous of William’s ward, Eliza, the illegitimate daughter of his first love; and the reappearance of Eliza’s father, John Willoughby, who was once Marianne’s love. Matters are complicated by the growing affection between Marianne’s sister, Margaret, and William’s nephew Henry, a developing relationship that serves as a stand-in for the original book’s. As their unshared feelings fester, distance grows between Marianne and William; Odiwe nods occasionally to the inequality between marriage partners, which allows the man to carry on much as he did prior to marriage, an issue that Austen herself would likely tackle; unfortunately, it’s hard to maintain suspense when the central plot conflict can be cleared up with a five-minute conversation.

Mr. Darcy's Secret by Jane Odiwe

JANE ODIWE
Mr. Darcy’s Secret
Released on February 1, 2011

Caroline Bingley and George Wickham begin to besmirch Darcy’s good name and sow seeds of discontent, but while Darcy and Elizabeth are already at odds, revelations of past conduct emerge that threaten to destroy their happiness.

Newlyweds Mr and Mrs Fitzwilliam Darcy begin their married life at Pemberley quite blissfully but it is not long before the tranquillity they relish is cut short by a series of traumas. But the new mistress of Pemberley soon has more pressing matters on her mind, the fact that she is carrying the Darcy heir being the most pleasant of them. The sudden return of her sister Lydia brings cause for concern. Alarming reports of a seduction, blackmail and the need to keep news of another’s confinement secret dampen even Elizabeth’s notoriously high spirits and Darcy shows his true character when faced with the most difficult decision of his life. The answers herein come from Austen’s most famous works: “Sense and Sensibility,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “Mansfield Park,” “Emma,” “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion.”

The surviving fragment also sets the story well on its path as Charlotte begins an adventure to Sanditon where a full cast of characters becomes intertwined in various intrigues. At first, Charlotte finds amusement enough standing at her ample Venetian window looking over the placid seafront. However, before long, Charlotte discovers that scandals abound. John Bennet, the elder brother of Mr. Bennet is forced to leave England, but before he departs, he vows to his brother that their family will someday be united. Two hundred years later, Dr. Fitzwilliam Darcy II, takes a teaching position at a small university. He is not expecting to find a woman who captivates him as the beautiful Elizabeth Bennett does, nor does he have any idea that she is descended from a lost branch of his family. They meet and fall in love, but will his aristocratic family and elite world of privilege accept her? Fitzwilliam’s younger brother, David, is a man scarred by his past. He has no desire for love, marriage, or family life until he meets a beautiful corporate executive from Charleston, South Carolina. She turns his world upside down as she haunts his dreams and waking moments almost from the beginning of their acquaintance. M. K. BAXLEY
Dana Darcy: A Sequel to the Cumberland Plateau
Released on July 13, 2010

Dana Darcy is a Southern Gothic tale of Pride and Prejudice set in London, England and Charleston, South Carolina: told in two parts. Part One begins in London where Fitzwilliam Darcy and his wife, the former Elizabeth Bennett of Tennessee, discover a lost and lonely child who bears a strong resemblance to Fitzwilliam’s mother, Anne Darcy. Two months before his marriage in The Cumberland Plateau, David Darcy, in an attempt to forget Cecilia Lawton, the woman who held claim to his heart, had one last encounter with his long-time lover Sandra Hamilton. But when he realized Sandra was in love with him, he broke off their relationship never to return again. Seven years have passed and once again Sandra Hamilton will reenter his life, this time with a little girl. As Sandra lies dying, will David come, and more importantly, will he love and accept the daughter he never knew existed? Part Two of Dana Darcy opens in Charleston, set in the rich culture and tradition of the Gullah People, former slaves of the rice and cotton planters on the Sea Islands and Coastal Plains of South Carolina and Georgia. Against the will of those who tried to conquer them, they have held to their ways, ways little understood and greatly feared by many. An old family curse has haunted the Lawton Family of the Carolina Lowcounry since 1820. With her marriage to David and the subsequent birth of their three sons, Cecilia believes the curse to be broken. But is it really, and more importantly, who placed the curse and why? As the story begins to unravel, an aging Root Doctor, Peter Morgan, finds himself pressed back into service as he tries to learn the truth about the strange happenings within the family he loves and works for. A snake, a cat, and a blood rose, what do they mean?

M. K. BAXLEY
The Mistress’s Black Veil: A Pride and Prejudice Vagary
Released on March 5, 2011

This book explores the road that might have been taken had one small alteration occurred in the original plot. Instead of Lydia Bennet going to Brighton while Lizzy toured the Lakes, what if she had gone instead while Elizabeth visited Charlotte in Kent? Elizabeth was called home immediately after receiving Mr. Darcy’s letter. Her father, while searching for his youngest daughter in London, succumbed to a cold and later died of heart failure. The subsequent events that follow are told in the narrative fashion and begins five years after that fateful day at Hunsford Parsonage when Mr. Darcy proposed to Elizabeth Bennet. The Bennets, now reduced to poverty after the death of Mr. Bennet, are barely surviving, having been thrown into the hedgerow by their cousin, Mr. Collins, at the directive of his noble patroness Lady Catherine de Bourgh. As the situation becomes ever more desperate, Elizabeth makes a difficult and irrevocable choice that will forever change not only her life, but the lives of those she loves as well. In the end will she and Fitzwilliam Darcy find their way to their happily ever after?

Not an Austen scholar by any means, Claire feels out of place at Oxford among the learned Austenites until she’s approached by elderly Harriet Dalrymple, who claims to be in possession of a partial manuscript of First Impressions, an early version of Pride and Prejudice. When she shows Claire the manuscript bit by bit, Claire is surprised to find a very different love story for Elizabeth Bennet unfolding on the page. Claire is questioning her own relationship with her stable but sports-obsessed boyfriend, Neil, while engaging in a serious flirtation with James, a handsome, inscrutable publisher. When Claire presents her sister’s paper and finds some startling parallels to her own life in it, she realizes she has some serious reevaluating to do.

Inspired by Sense and Sensibility, this book follows two modern-day sisters as they set out on a walking tour of Jane Austen’s England and uncover what might actually be Jane’s long-lost diary. Their mother also left them something else: a diary that belonged to Jane’s sister Cassandra. These pages shed light on the secrets that nearly tore the Austen sisters apart and inspired one of the greatest love stories of all time. They also bring Jane to life in a way that no one has ever seen before: through the eyes of her sister. As the Dodge sisters embark on their walking tour, they too are drawn together in ways they never expected. They also discover that Cassandra’s diary holds secrets, and someone doesn’t want Ellen and Mimi to discover the truth. As they stumble on their way toward love, the women learn how Jane and Cassandra Austen inspired the original Marianne and Elinor Dashwood and come to realize that despite their very different personalities, they are a vital part of each other’s happy endings.

However, dealing with Darcy’s conniving aunt, Lady De Bourgh, as well as the machinations of his troublesome sister-in-law, Lydia, and his arch-rival and nemesis Wickham (here truly evil), threaten their domestic happiness. Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laura Viera Rigler

LAURA VIERA RIGLER
Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict
Released on August 3, 2007

Talk about an out-of-body experience. One moment Courtney Stone is a modern-day L.A. career woman lamenting a lost love; the next she is Jane Mansfield, a well-to-do, willowy (though not particularly buxom, unlike her twentieth-century namesake) lady in nineteenth-century England. What could account for this transplant of time and place? Courtney has no opportunity to ruminate over such matters; she must quickly learn to interact with inhabitants of the brave old world in which she finds herself. There’s her mother, determined to marry 30-year-old Jane off to handsome Mr. Edgeworth; her artist father, more inclined to his daughter’s free-spirited frame of mind; and faithful servant Miss Barnes, who helps her mistress manage everything from chaperones to corsets. It’s not long before Jane finds the lines blurred between her two vastly different selves.

Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laura Viera Rigler

LAURA VIERA RIGLER
Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict
Released on April 27, 2010

In this sequel, 19th-century Jane Mansfield switches bodies and milieus with contemporary L.A. girl Courtney Stone. As Jane grasps the idea that she’s a different person in an unimaginable world, and grapples with the radically liberal social mores, dress and language, she leans on Jane Austen’s novels as touchstones to reality. Kate Reading performs the first-person narration with a cultured tones and accent befitting an upper-class Regency-era young lady. Her skill as a versatile voice performer becomes evident as dialogue introduces modern American characters, and she skillfully modulates her accent, dialect and tones to accommodate them. The romantically suspenseful story and the entertaining vocal interpretation will keep romance listeners enthralled and amused.

Jane Austen's Guide to Good Manners by Josephine Ross

JOSEPHINE ROSS (with Henrietta Webb)
Jane Austen’s Guide to Good Manners: Compliments, Charades & Horrible Blunders
Released on October 3, 2006

This book is a light-hearted, insightful handbook written as if intended for Jane’s original Regency Era readers. When Anna, Jane Austen’s young niece, sent her a novel for “literary comment,” Jane loved everything about it, except its utter disregard for the manners of the day. The resulting and tender correspondence between the two serves as the foundation for this instructional book. Etiquette and social behavior of the early 1800s come to life in lovely chapters teaching the reader how to pay and return formal “calls,” how to properly refuse a proposal of marriage, who should lead off the dancing at a country-house ball, and what to wear for a morning walk.

Jane Austen: A Companion by Josephine Ross

JOSEPHINE ROSS
Jane Austen: A Companion
Released on November 16, 2006

This illuminating, entertaining, up-to-date companion is the only general guide to Jane Austen, her work, and her world. The book explores the literary scene during the time Austen’s works first appeared: the books considered classics then, the “horrid novels” and romances, and the grasping publishers. The book looks at the architecture and decor of Austen’s era that made up “the profusion and elegance of modern taste”: Regency houses for instance, Chippendale furniture, “picturesque scenery.” On the smaller scale the book answers questions that may baffle modern readers of Austen’s work. What, for example, was “hartshorn”? How did Lizzy Bennet “let down” her gown to hide her muddy petticoat? The book shows us the fashions, and the subtle ways Jane Austen used clothes to express character. Courtship, marriage, adultery, class and “rank,” mundane tasks of ordinary life, all appear, as does the wider political and military world–especially the navy, in which her brothers served.

Tea with Jane Austen by Kim Wilson

KIM WILSON
Tea with Jane Austen
Released on April 1, 2011

Who would not want to sit down with Jane Austen and join her in a cup of tea? Here for the first time is a book that shares the secrets of one of her favorite rituals. Tea figures prominently in Jane Austen’s life and work. At the center of almost every social situation in her novels one finds tea. In Emma, does Miss Bates drink coffee? Of course not: ‘No coffee, I thank you, for me-never take coffee. A little tea if you please.’ In Pride and Prejudice, what is one of the supreme honors Mr. Collins can envision Lady Catherine bestowing on Elizabeth Bennet and her friends? Why, drinking tea with her, naturally. Tea with Jane Austen begins with tea drinking in the morning and ends with tea in the evening, at balls and other gatherings. Each chapter includes a description of how tea was taken at a particular place or time of day, along with history, recipes, excerpts from Austen’s novels and letters and illustrations from the time.

With lush photos, social history, excerpts from the novels, information on her life, and period drawings, In the Garden with Jane Austen brings Jane Austen’s world and Georgian and Regency gardens to life. The book also includes gardens featured in film adaptations of Austen’s novels and provides instructions on creating one’s own Jane Austen garden.
