The rumor mill is at it again with news that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will be leaving Doctor Who at the end of this season. According to Doctor Who TV, Daily Star and Blastr, it looks like Amy and Rory will NOT be killed off, but they will announce they want to head back home and settle down.

One story idea is to have Amy and Rory appear as “stay-at-home” assistants for The Doctor, helping him out from Earth from time to time.

Admittedly, this rumor is not too improbable, because Arthur Darvill is currently starring in a play called Doctor Faustus until October 2, and the show’s Christmas episode is set to start filming next month, meaning Darvill may not be available in time to film the special.

Also, Karen Gillan has already confirmed that she would be back for season 7, though she never actually gave specifics about her return, and nothing’s been said about her being in the Christmas episode either yet.

While all of this news isn’t exactly new, it does keep the fans guessing about what might happen next.

The news broke last night that Syfy is canceling Eureka – ironically while a new episode of the show was airing. And while that news is very sad for the show’s diehard fanbase (myself included), there is a little bit of a silver lining. Eureka is NOT going off the air this year.

As most folks have probably read by now, there are still five more episodes of the current season that is airing, there will be an all-new Christmas episode airing this December AND there will be 12 more episodes in Season 5 that are set to air next year.

Also, this November the folks at Creation Entertainment are putting together a convention honoring Eureka (as well as its nightly counterpart: Warehouse 13). You can learn more details on that convention – which will be held in Los Angeles – here.

Finally, I wanted to share some words from the Executive Producer and Co-Creator of Eureka, Jaime Paglia:

“Heartfelt thanks to all our Eureka fans for the incredible support. You’re the reason we do what we do. It has been a privilege. We hope to be able to give you, the characters, and Eureka a proper send-off. We’re doing all we can to make that happen. But whatever happens, you have a season and a half of fantastic new episodes to come through next year. It only gets better. All my thanks to our amazing cast, crew and creative team for their phenomenal work on these 76 episodes of Eureka. You’re the best.”

So, let’s enjoy the time we have left with one of our beloved sci-fi shows and relish each new episode as it airs!

On August 27, Doctor Who will be back for the back-half of the current season of new episodes on BBC America. James Hibberd at Entertainment Weekly provided a look at the new Doctor Who poster for that triumphant return; and I just had to share it here.

The following is taken (nearly) verbatim from an article at The Futon Critic:

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, the USA Network will premiere the original film The Space Between on Sunday, September 11 at 9 PM. This Characters Unit film stars Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress Melissa Leo (The Fighter).

In the film, Montine McLeod (Leo), a lonely flight attendant, and Omar Hassan (Anthony Keyvan from Lost and iCarly), a 10-year-old Pakistani-American boy, are on a plane that is grounded in Longview, TX the morning of 9/11/01. When Montine discovers that Omar’s father works in the World Trade Center she is forced to drive the boy back home to his uncertain future in New York. As they journey across America’s vast heartland in the hours and days immediately following the terrorist attacks, Montine and Omar help each other discover the importance of tolerance, redemption, acceptance and hope.

Immediately following is the Oscar winning short documentary film Twin Towers from acclaimed producer Dick Wolf of the long running Law & Order franchise.

Bell Media, Canada’s premier multi-media company, will bring the new drama Highland Gardens to Canadian viewers at some soon point (and hopefully to US viewers when possible), as it starts production on the new series today.

The premise of Highland Gardens is set in and around an apartment-style hotel that draws aspiring performers from Canada, the U.S. and all over the world. The show is a no-holds-barred, character-driven relationship drama that follows the exploits of six young hopefuls in search of celluloid and stardom in Hollywood. Full of heart-rending moments, salacious temptations and hilarious escapades, the show’s coming-of-age dwellers grapple with life’s defining moments as they deal with the unreality of the show-biz industry. Whether they stay a week, a month, or 40 years, the denizens of Highland Gardens provide something to each other that’s in short supply elsewhere in Hollywood: support.

The ensemble drama stars the following:

Joe Dinicol (Murdoch Mysteries and the film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) is “nice-guy” Nick, a struggling stand-up comedian from Edmonton who is always the best friend and never the boyfriend;

Andra Fuller (The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Entourage) is Kaldrick, the extremely successful Hip-Hop artist hailing from the streets of Oakland, California;

Jonathan Patrick Moore (the Australian shows Neighbours and All Saints) is Connor, a break-out Australian with drop-dead good looks and a dark past;

Chelan Simmons (Kyle XY) is Alicia, a sensitive, aspiring dancer from Regina who will do whatever it takes to make ends meet;

Jewel Staite (Firefly and Stargate Atlantis) is the street-smart Haligonian Raquel, who’s frightened of becoming yesterday’s news;

Cassie Steele (Degrassi and Relic Hunter) is Abby, the naïve Toronto actor who is ready to fight to get to the top; and,

Benjamin Charles Watson (The Listener) is Tariq, the confident and talented African-Canadian hip-hop artist with a secret on the down low.

The one-hour, six-part scripted series begins shooting in Toronto today before continuing in Hollywood this fall. The show will be executive produced by Linda Schuyler (Degrassi and Instant Star), Stephen Stohn (Degrassi and Instant Star) and Martin Gero (Bored to Death).

Lost Girl

According to James Hibberd over at Entertainment Weekly, Syfy has picked up the Canadian supernatural series Lost Girl.

Lost Girl stars Anna Silk (Being Erica) as Bo, a demon seductress (aka a succubus) who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no idea she was any different until she accidentally “drained” her first boyfriend to death. She hits the road and discovers she’s a member of a group that feeds off human energy (called Fae), and she must choose between joining the light and dark clans. Other characters include Dyson, a homicide detective/Bo’s love interest, who also happens to be a werewolf (Kris Holden-Ried), Kenzi, a human confidante and street-smart survivor (Ksenia Solo), Lauren, a human doctor who competes for Bo’s heart (Zoie Palmer), and Detective Hale, a handsome male “Siren” who is Dyson’s partner on the police force (K. C. Collins).

Syfy has picked up the two (existing) seasons of the show; the first of which has already aired in Canada and was available online for everyone outside of Canada to watch if you could find the right links. The second season is reportedly going to air this fall in Canada and now American audiences will get to see it too.

NOTE: I am personally extremely delighted by this news, as I was able to watch the show online last fall and got hooked very quickly. The only issue for Syfy will be the sex scenes and the very brief nudity, but hopefully they won’t edit it – just blur it out – or else it messes with the pace of each episode.

According to the folks over at TV Guide, Marvel Entertainment and ABC Studios have teamed up to create a hard-cover graphic novel inspired by ABC’s Castle. It is entitled “Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm“. It is the first partnership between Marvel and ABC since Disney, which owns ABC, acquired Marvel last year.

The book focuses on Derrick Storm, the protagonist of Richard Castle’s most popular series of novels. Viewers may recall that Castle (Nathan Fillion) began following Beckett (Stana Katic) for inspiration for a new series of books after he made the decision to kill off Derrick Storm, with whom he’d become bored.

The 112-page graphic novel will be written by Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain America and The Secret Avengers). Lan Medina (Fables) will handle the interior art; Carlo Pagulayan (Planet Hulk) created the cover art, which can be seen here.

This is the latest branding experiment ABC has tried with Castle. The network has already teamed with Hyperion Books to publish two novels — Heat Wave and Naked Heat — that parallel Castle’s work with Beckett, the inspiration for the author’s heroine Nikki Heat. A third book, Heat Rises, is due in the fall. ABC also launched RichardCastle.Net in April.

Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm will be available in stores in September 2011.

Thanks to TV Guide for the above information.

Chuck Fans!! REJOICE!!

The following is verbatim straight from Lynette Rice at Entertainment Weekly:

“It‘s Chuck vs. a new NBC president.

And it (is) Chuck (who) won!

The perpetual bubbliest of the broadcast bubble shows has once again pulled out a victory, securing a fifth round that will air on NBC next season. The network has ordered 13 episodes for Warner Bros., sources confirm.

For awhile there, things looked possibly bleak for our heroes. New NBC chief Robert Greenblatt took the reins and inherited a new crop of pilots to shape into his own hits while at the same time Chuck was dipping in the rating — the show averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 this season, and that’s with DVR included.”

ME: Let’s all raise a toast to the little show that could for making it through to another season (13 episodes or bust!)
