Comic Con

I will be heading to San Diego for Comic Con 2015 tomorrow morning.

This will be my 14th year going to the annual convention and my 7th year covering the event as press.

Please visit both NiceGirlsTV and TV Equals as well as here at Rueben’s Ramblings for stories on various television shows like The Player (the new NBC drama), The Last Ship, Dark Matter, Dominion, The 100, Lucifer (the new FOX drama), The Shannara Chronicles (the new MTV drama), Colony (the new USA Network drama), Orphan Black, Outlander, Containment (the new CW thriller), Heroes Reborn and another big presentation by Warner Bros. and DC Comics [among others].

Once again, I’ll be in San Diego for a week – with a number of the other NiceGirlsTV staff – so my daily updates, ratings reports and breaking news posts will be delayed until after Comic Con is over.

Comic Con 2015 is only two weeks away! Are you ready?!

Here is my annual survival guide for those who have attended in years past or for those who are newbies. The following will give you a rundown of what to expect from THE largest pop culture convention on the planet.

Comic Con 2015 will be held from Wednesday, July 7 to Sunday, July 12 this year, once again at the massively large San Diego Convention Center.

By now you better have your 4-day pass if you want to be there for the entire “weekend” and Preview Night or have your daily passes; otherwise, you are virtually screwed because the event sold out early.

In addition to having your tickets, you better have made a hotel reservation earlier this year or, once again, you are going to be screwed. Hotel rooms are at a premium even through the official Comic Con International website; and if you don’t have a reservation by now, you simply will NOT find one.

So, for those of you still with me – you’ve got your passes and your hotel room; now, you need to know what to expect from this crazy thing called Comic Con 2015. Read on for tips, recommendations and insight from an over 14-year veteran of the event.

GETTING TO THE CON/GETTING AROUND SAN DIEGO

Depending on what day you are leaving for the event and your how you’re getting there, make sure to give yourself time to not only get to San Diego but also to navigate around the city and find/get checked in at your hotel. Everyone else is going to be on the road, on the train, on the bus, in the plane or figuring out their own way to San Diego. Traffic is going to be heavy; and once you get there, the foot traffic is going to be even heavier. Allow plenty of time to arrive in San Diego as well as time to check in and get settled. Then learn where your shuttle pick-up is located or if your hotel is even on a shuttle route or whether you have to get a cab or the trolley, where the hotel restaurant is located, where the local restaurants are, how far are you from the convention center if you are within walking distance, et al.

This leads us to dealing with the foot traffic on each day of the convention. There are going to be hundreds of thousands of people in San Diego. You are going to need to learn the best route to get from your hotel (or wherever you are staying) to the convention center and back. You need to give yourself PLENTY of time to get there in the morning once you’re up and ready for the day. If you are going by vehicle (bus, car or trolley), it could potentially take you 30 minutes to a couple of hours to get where you need to go, depending on how bad the traffic turns out to be each day.

BE PREPARED!!

HOW TO PACK FOR COMIC CON

Pack for comfort. I cannot stress that enough. Unless you have a valid and very important reason to dress in costume, dress in comfortable shoes and clothes! Your feet and body will thank you later! You will be walking the distance of THREE freaking football fields at the convention center. Up and down escalators and/or stairs. There are elevators, but they are usually crowded with those who cannot use the escalators or stairs as well as baby strollers.

You will be going back and forth from one side of the convention center to the other or the surrounding hotels and other locations throughout the area as well as standing or slowly moving (if you are moving at all) in the lines to get into the panel rooms.

BE PREPARED!!! (These two words will be an ongoing theme. Consider it your mantra for the convention.)

Dress in layers. It may sound like a crazy idea, but if you plan on getting to the convention center early in the morning it could be chilly, there could be light rain and let’s not enough talk about the mist: wear a jacket! If you’re waiting outside of Hall H or one of the panels in one of the nearby hotels, wear plenty of sunscreen. Make sure you have plenty to wear when you are inside, too, because the panel rooms are downright FRIGID!

BE PREPARED!

WHAT KIND OF BAG SHOULD I CARRY?

You are going to need to a good, strong, sturdy large bag, tote bag or back pack. Your shoulders and arms will thank you!

Important Reminder: Do not bring wheeled carts, luggage, bags or boxes that require more than one person to carry or hold!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

Besides bringing protection from the outside elements, you are going to need survival gear to get yourself through the long-ass convention days. You will want to think about bringing the following:

FOOD AND SNACKS:

• Snacks and Food (to get you through those long hours in the panel rooms when you can’t easily get away to grab food in or out of the convention center)
• Bottled water (you will want to keep hydrated)
• Handi-wipes/Kleenex/napkins (keep your hands clean to take pictures, or to hold onto those special gifts or free swag tickets that could be distributed during various panels)
• Zip Lock Bags (for waste or just in case)
• Breath mints/certs/gum (you may not be able to brush your teeth after every meal)
• Body spray/deodorant (if you can smell the person sitting next to you, they can probably smell you too)

NOTE: Food and beverages at the convention center tend to be overpriced and not that good so it’s a good idea to bring non-perishable items like fruit, crackers, trail mix, candy, cookies, peanut butter sandwiches, energy bars, peanuts, chips and the like to get you through the day.

EQUIPMENT:

• Camera (Charger, Extra Batteries, Memory Card)
• Laptop [if you can’t live without it] (power cord and extra battery)
• Cell Phone (Charger, Extra Batteries)

OTHER:

• Cash (it’s best to have small bills to make it easier to get in and out of vendor booths, food lines, et al and keep your money in a safe place in your bag)
• Paper/Pens (if you want to make notes, give your contact information to someone or just in case)
• Medicine for allergies, Maalox for upset stomachs, Tylenol/Aspirin or the like for aches and pains
• Sheet Protectors (for those of you who collect photos or if you get those all-important autographs)
• Tiny flashlight (in case your cell phone runs down so you can navigate the dark panel rooms if need be)

HOW DO I FIGURE OUT MY DAILY SCHEDULE

There are hundreds of panels scheduled over the course of the convention. Then there are all the autograph opportunities and all the stuff going on in the Exhibition Hall (and so much more). It is to your advantage to figure out what you want to do each day AHEAD OF TIME!!

The Comic Con 2015 schedule will be released later this week and it is a good idea to print it out and highlight all the panels you are interested in attending. Then go back and double check the times and locations.

This is where you will have to make the tough decisions because a lot of your panels will conflict or overlap. You will want to make your main schedule that will include all the panels that you cannot or do not want to miss. Then you will also want to give yourself a back-up list or two in case you can’t get into your top favorite panels. It’s all about choices and acceptance that you can’t get to or in to everything.

The same holds true for hitting the Exhibition Hall. You can learn ahead of time who will be down in the hall by checking out the Comic Con website or going through the Comic Con booklet that will be provided in your gift bag at registration. Learn where your favorite vendors are located and get to them early, especially if they have something specific for sale or an item that you desperately need for your collection. BE PREPARED for crowds inside the Exhibition Hall, lots of noise and chaos. It is like an unorganized three-ring circus in there and it can get ABSOLUTELY crazy! Be forewarned that Saturday is typically the worst day, but in recent years almost every day of the convention, including Preview Night are simply INSANE!

WHAT SHOULD I WATCH OUT FOR?

PEOPLE: The crowds are insane. Pay attention to where you are going so you don’t run into people who will be in wheelchairs, using canes, crutches or walkers and children will be in strollers with their parents. MANY people will be in costume and, in some cases, cannot see well out of the costumes. Pay attention and BE PREPARED! Give room to those less fortunate than you!

SECURITY: If you are nice to them, they will be nice to you!! Security is a thankless job and they are routinely not informed enough about what is going on. Cut the security guards a break; they are JUST doing their job as best they can.

YOUR COMIC CON ID BADGE: Do NOT lose your ID badge. You will be out of luck if it is lost! Keep your ID handy, too, as the folks at Comic Con International will be checking ID even more stringently upon entrance to the Exhibition Hall and possibly other locations inside the convention center.

BE PREPARED and enjoy Comic Con 2015!

TV viewers know actress Evangeline Lilly from her role as Kate Austen on the long-running, international hit series Lost and movie goers know her as Tauriel from The Hobbit movie franchise; but far too few know her as an author. That will change soon enough because Evangeline is the author of the new hardcover children’s book “The Squickerwonkers” that will be released this Tuesday.

This past July at San Diego Comic Con, Evangeline led a panel to introduce her storybook and I was surprised to learn that this is a passion project of hers. In fact, it has been her passion since she was 14 years old when she first came up with the idea.

During the panel she explained that she first self-published the book last year, selling 1000 copies before the Titan Publishing Group came to her about releasing the book and a much greater scale. Being a self-proclaimed perfectionist, Evangeline made changes to the 2013 version and worked with Johnny Fraser-Allen – who works at the Weta Workshop (the special effects and props company behind The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings franchise) and is the illustrator of “The Squickerwonkers”.

As the duo worked together, much of the time with Evangeline here in the U.S. and Johnny in New Zealand, her vision began to come to life even more; but then a troubling fact was pointed out to her. Her characters – a traveling band of marionettes puppets that each suffer from their own vice – resembled the characters in the 2009 animated film Coraline because of their button eyes. She and Johnny were forced to go back to the drawing board, thankfully coming up with a solution: replace the buttons with coins.

Once they had that new direction, Evangeline and Johnny got back to work creating the world of “The Squickerwonkers”, which was inspired by her love of all things Dr. Seuss and based on a poem she wrote for school.

The Squickerwonkers” will not only be released as a hardcover book but also in digital format and Evangeline is also aiming for a film version too. As a special treat during the panel, Evangeline shared sneak peeks inside the book as well a short reel that is expected to feature Doctor Who alum Sylvester McCoy doing the voiceover.

While many people think that children’s books are only for children, Evangeline’s passion, and her belief that her cautionary tale that teaches kids and gives them a moral compass, was contagious.

You can learn more about Evangeline’s passion project here and head over to Amazon to purchase the book, which is actually the first of a planned set of 18 books according to Evangeline.

Reign Season 2

The second season of Reign will be returning to The CW this Thursday, October 2 and with it a return to the French Court and Mary, Queen of Scots. But this past July cast members Adelaide Kane, Toby Regbo and Megan Follows as well as series creator Laurie McCarthy took to the stage at San Diego Comic Con to talk about the show and what fans can expect in season two.

Among the items discussed during the panel included:

• Fans should be, according to McCarthy, be concerned about how season one ended and where the stories will pick up in season two;

• Anything can happen on the show, including perhaps even a visit by the Ghost of King Henry, who, as viewers know, died after an injury that was inflicted by his own son Francis, but only Francis knows that truth and that truth will haunt the new King;

• Season two will focus greatly on what goes on behind the walls of the castle, seeing a power play go on between the people with money and the people with the food and materials especially given the fact that the Black Plague is upon them;

• Season two will also find new romantic intrigue and even new de’ Medici’s (Queen Catherine’s family) showing up;

• McCarthy shared that she is eager to get Mary and Francis on the throne; in fact, she said there is “no bigger challenge” right now than getting the couple to that point;

• Adelaide shared that her character Mary will be torn between being the Queen of Scotland and being a good wife; and that will, of course, be tested greatly by the child of her best friend Lola (series regular Anna Popplewell), who is also the child of her husband Francis;

• Adelaide also said that she is “interested (in seeing) how Mary wrests power from Queen Catherine;

• Toby shared that Francis wants his brother Bash (series regular Torrance Coombs) on his side and part of the second season will be focused on the brothers regaining their trust of each other;

• Megan shared that her character Queen Catherine and Mary now have something in common and that will make their relationship in season two a bit different; and it was shared that Catherine will gain a new lover this year; and,

• During the audience Q&A, each of the actors were asked their favorite scenes to play out with Megan sharing she liked the dynamics between Catherine and Nostradamus (recurring guest star Rossif Sutherland); Adelaide likes the scenes where there is tension between Mary and Francis; and Toby liked the scene with King Henry on his death bed.

Reign will be back on The CW with its second season starting on Thursday, October 2 at 9/8c.

OUAT Season 4 Poster

With the return of the ABC fairytale drama Once Upon a Time this Sunday night at 8 PM, it is time to take a look back at the visit made at Comic Con 2014 in San Diego by the cast and creative minds behind the show.

On the panel that morning included Lana Parrilla (The Evil Queen), Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan), Josh Dallas (Prince Charming), Emilie de Ravin (Belle), Robert Carlyle (Rumplestilskin), Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook), Jared Gilmore (Henry Mills) and executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

With self-proclaimed Once Upon a Time super-fan and actress Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) acting as moderator, the panel was opened with a clip reel from season three and each of the panelists being introduced to the roar of the packed audience.

Among the subjects that were discussed included the following:

• Eddy and Adam talking about how their “true love” stories have happy endings that aren’t what views expect;

• Belle and Rumple are not going to have an easy start to their marriage because of his deception (in regards to keeping the dagger) despite his genuine love for her and Emilie shared that Belle will “be devastated” when she learns the truth;

• Jared was praised by Yvette for being the heart of the show and how “chilling” it was to see him play Peter Pan; with Jared saying “it was amazing (because) Henry is so nice and Pan would do anything to be the opposite”;

• Lana shared that she is “proud of Regina’s growth” over this past season, but with the unexpected return of Robin Hood’s believed-to-be-dead wife Marian, things are going to be complicated and there is a possibility that she could return to her “old ways”;

• Emma and Hook will attempt to work on their relationship, but Emma is also “on a journey to find herself”;

• Colin shared that for the first time ever Hook will be out of the 50-pound leather jacket that has been his common attire, getting into “regular clothes”; and,

• Josh was congratulated on the recent birth of his and Ginnifer’s real-life “prince” with him sharing that “fatherhood is the greatest thing that has ever happened to (him)”.

NOTE: It was at this time that a special video of Ginnifer was shown, as she was on set in Canada, but she wanted to say hello to all the fans at the convention. The video, of course, was a spoof of her being a ‘crazy, protective, on-set mom”. It was really quite funny!

During the audience Q&A, Colin shared that “Emma helped (Hook) find his goodness”; Lana said that she has “never been bored” playing a character that has changed from evil to good to potentially evil again and Jennifer enjoyed traveling to New York and Neverland, but she is looking forward to riding a horse because she “hasn’t gotten to do that (yet)” and she said she enjoyed “getting initiated into the fairytale world” by wearing the corsets and dresses.

One tidbit that Eddy and Adam were willing to reveal is that Henry will be going into the family pawn business with Mr. Gold; but when asked if Flynn Ryder from the animated movie Tangled would be added to the guest list, they were mum on the subject. They also shared that it is their “job, at the end of the day, to have everyone get their own happy ending” so let’s see how that works out on Sunday when the princesses Elsa and Anna from the animated Disney film Frozen join the cast.

Once Upon a Time will be back for its fourth season on ABC this Sunday, September 28 at 8/7c. If you are a true fan of the show, you will also want to watch the Once Upon a Time SpecialFrozen Over” that will air at 7/6c.

John Barrowman at Comic Con 2014 (Photo By: Rueben)

John Barrowman at Comic Con 2014 (Photo By: Rueben)

Actor-singer John Barrowman is a fan favorite at Comic Con (not that dissimilar to the regard that fans have for actor Nathan Fillion); and Saturday afternoon of the 4-day event last month found a legend of his fans hitting up one of the ballrooms in the nearby Bayfront Hilton Hotel to hear him regal them with stories.

The energetic actor was on fire that afternoon, answering question after question by his adoring fans, sharing interesting stories about his many TV and stage roles as well as some of his favorite things. The following is just a sample of the things he shared:

• He hopes that fans will get to see Captain Jack again despite the fact that he was told “Torchwood is dead”; he would also love to see Captain Jack return to the world of Doctor Who, but he has “not been asked to come back”;

• He would love to appear in the stage play Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but he just doesn’t have time right now, but he does have his “eye on other musicals in the future”;

• He knew he would be back on Arrow because it’s “hard to kill Malcolm Merlyn”, joking that he is “the Lex Luthor of that world” and he revealed that it was actually his husband Scott’s idea of Malcolm being Thea’s dad;

• When he read the script of Arrow, he “loved it’ and he shared that the third season will open in the limo with Malcolm and Thea (just where the second season left off); and that they were to start filming on August 6;

• He is very proud of the “Hollow Earth” books he has published with his sister Carole and he would love to see those stories adapted to the screen someday;

• He shared that his favorite comic book character to play if he had the chance would be either Captain America, Robin (from Batman and Robin) or “truth be told” Wonder Woman;

• While the play “Anything Goes” changed his life, he doesn’t like to pick a favorite musical, but he did say that Cole Porter has been a big influence in his life;

• He did, however, pick a favorite Doctor when asked, sharing that David Tennant is his favorite and he also made the choice when asked that he would “kill 9, marry 10 and shag 11” [he also joked that he wouldn’t want to make these choices except he was asked];

• He shared that there will be some kind of “fan thing” coming up with the Arrow cast, but he could not elaborate what that would be; and,

• The entire audience recorded a “Happy Birthday” message to his nephew who was celebrating his special day overseas, making John a very happy man.

All too soon the panel came to an end after having a great experience with the song and dance man who will be seen as a series regular on Arrow starting this fall when the show returns for its third season on The CW starting on October 8 at 8/7c.
