Witches of East End Season 2

Two weeks ago at Comic Con 2014 the entire cast and creative team behind the Lifetime drama Witches of East End took to the stage at the San Diego Convention Center to talk about the show’s second season that has taken on a much darker this year from last season.

The panelists included Julia Ormond (Joanna Beauchamp), Jenna Dewan-Tatum (Freya Beauchamp), Rachel Boston (Ingrid Beauchamp), Madchen Amick (Wendy Beauchamp), Daniel DiTomasso (Killian Gardiner) and Eric Winter (Dash Gardiner) along with executive producers Richard Hatem and Maggie Friedman, who is also the series creator.

After seeing a sneak peek at the first two arcs of this coming Sunday’s episode, the cast and creative team took to the stage and had the following to share about the show:

• As the season progresses, the mysterious romance between Ingrid and the Mandragora (guest star Anthony Konechny), the magical creature that came through the Asgard portal at the end of season one, will be further explored;

• The relationship between Freya and Killian will not get any smoother;

• Julia will still deal with a lot of changes especially with Ingrid moving out;

• While Wendy has a soft spot for her nephew Frederick (new series regular Christian Cooke), she doesn’t trust him and she will work hard to bring the truth to everyone in the family;

• There may be more just friendship between Dash and Ingrid as the season rolls out because, according to Rachel, they have an “interesting connection”;

• The executive producers teased that there will be some deaths, there will be more twists and turns in Freya and Killian’s relationship, there will be more Frederick, the history of the Beauchamp will be explored including more flashbacks; and,

• With Dash and Killian now aware of their powers, there will be “fun twists to explore the dynamic of their abilities,” according to Eric.

During the Q&A section of the panel, Madchen shared that now that Wendy has only one life left she will “have to grow up a little” and perhaps her budding relationship with Tommy (recurring guest star Ignacio Serricchio) will help her along that path.

When asked what storylines they like best to write, Maggie shared that she “loves writing the past life stories” while Richard “enjoys writing for Killian and Eva (recurring guest star Bianca Lawson).

The cast was then asked what it is like to film the spell scenes with the cast all joining that it takes a lot of imagination to visualize the CGI that is added in to the scenes, but sometimes it doesn’t always work out right for them. Madchen, of course, chimed in to joke “so you guys don’t know how to do magic?”

When asked what their favorite scene has been, each cast member shared the following:

• Eric – Blowing up the car
• Daniel – The boat scene from episode two
• Madchen – Any scene where the four witches are together
• Rachel – The storyline with Adam (recurring guest star Jason George)
• Jenna – The boat scene
• Julia – Any scene between Joanna and Wendy

And they also talked briefly about the type of scene they would love to film:

• Rachel – she would love to see Ingrid fly
• Jenna – would love to see a witch fight or Freya kicking some serious ass
• Madchen – she Wendy do some dark voodoo magic
• Daniel and Eric – they would love to see a warlock fight
• Julia – see Joanna struggle with her environmental footprint

To see what happens next on Witches of East End, make sure to tune into Lifetime this Sunday, August 10 at 9/8c.

As much as I would love to be nearly everywhere at San Diego Comic Con each year, that is an impossible feat at least until someone figures out how to clone people or make astral projection a reality.

In the meantime, it really helps to have a fantastic friend with an amazing camera and a skill at photography to help capture just some of the excitement that is Comic Con.

The following pictures were taken by my good friend Dominick Dusseault throughout the first day of the convention:

Last weekend at Comic Con 2014, one of the largest panels I have ever attended took place at the end of the special presentation by Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment that featured the world premieres of this fall’s two most anticipated new shows Gotham (FOX) and The Flash (The CW) as well as sneak peeks at season three of Arrow (The CW) and the new NBC thriller Constantine that was hosted by Arrow star Stephen Amell.

The impressive panel included the following:

Arrow: Caity Lotz, John Barrowman, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne, Colton Haynes, David Ramsey, Katie Cassidy, Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell

The Flash: Jesse L. Martin, John Wesley Shipp, Tom Cavanaugh, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker and Grant Gustin

Constantine: Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford, Angelica Celaya and Matt Ryan

Gotham: Erin Richards, Camren Bicondova, David Mazouz, Robin Lord Taylor, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donal Logue and Ben McKenzie

Executive Producers: Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller (Gotham); Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow and The Flash) and Daniel Cerone and David Goyer (Constantine)

Nearly each actor and executive producer got a chance to speak about their roles in the show, what drew them to their parts, what drew them to work on their respective show and much more with the highlight of the night – besides the amazing video presentations – was the fact that Arrow star Stephen Amell revealed his well-toned abs for the entire audience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot episodes of The Flash and Gotham and am pretty sure that fans of the DC Comics world will enjoy them too. Arrow will assuredly come back bigger and stronger than ever and Constantine is easily going to scare the crap out of the viewers much like what Hannibal has done.

Gotham will debut on FOX on Monday, September 22; The Flash will debut on Tuesday, October 7 on The CW; Arrow will be back for season three on The CW on Wednesday, October 8 and Constantine will debut on NBC on Friday, October 24.

Mark your calendars!

Last July the cast and creative minds behind the new CW futuristic drama The 100 – which will debut on March 19 – graced the stage at San Diego Comic Con 2013, giving attendees a look inside the upcoming show.

The 100 is actually based on the book by Cass Morgan, which at the time of Comic Con 2013 was set to be published that fall, making it an interesting case for the executive producers and writers to adapt it to the small screen.

Matthew Miller and Jason Rothenberg, the Executive Producers on the panel, shared that even the show was adapted from the book, which was released in September, they weren’t “handcuffed it” to.

The 100 is set 97 years after a nuclear Armageddon decimated planet Earth, destroying civilization. The only survivors are the 400 inhabitants of 12 international space stations that were in orbit at the time of the disaster. Three generations have been born in space, the survivors now number 4,000. But with resources running out on their dying “Ark” – the 12 stations now linked together and repurposed to keep the survivors alive – Draconian measures, including capital punishment and population control, are the order of the day. In order to survive, the leaders of the Ark take ruthless steps to ensure their future, including secretly exiling a group of 100 juvenile prisoners to the Earth’s surface to test whether it’s habitable.

In essence the show will have two very distinct sets of locations and characters: the juveniles on Earth and the rest of the survivors on the Ark. The executive producers joked that The 100 can be looked at as Battlestar Galactica meets Lost.

The 100

The discussion then shifted over to the cast on the panel, which included newcomer Eliza Taylor (who plays lead character Clarke Griffin, the daughter of the head doctor aboard the Ark), Thomas McDonell (who plays mystery delinquent Finn), Marie Avgeropoulos (who plays stowaway Octavia Blake), Henry Ian Cusick (who plays Councillor Kane) and Isaiah Washington (who plays Chancellor Jaha).

Henry shared that his character, who is one of the leaders on the Ark, makes a “big move” in the pilot. Without spoiling what happens in the debut episode, which was actually screened during the panel, Councillor Kane makes a “move to exert control” on the Ark and viewers “will have to tune in to see” just what Kane will do next. Whereas Isaiah, who essentially plays the President of the survivors on the Ark, not only has the concerns of all those on the Ark but he also has a teenaged son, who is one of the 100 juveniles on Earth. It should also be noted that there are very few good feelings between Kane and Jaha, making for a contentious relationship between the two leaders.

On the other hand, the teens on Earth have a lot to deal with; namely being on a planet ravaged by massive devastation and Lord of the Flies-like competition between the 100 teens who now inhabit the planet. Eliza shared that her character Clarke is “a natural born leader” who learns “quickly that she has to step up” once they are on the ground for the first time in their lives.

For Marie’s character Octavia, who was hidden on the Ark by her mother who had a second child which is illegal in their world, has a “close sibling bond” with her older brother Bellamy, who conned his way onto the ship that took the 100 to Earth. Bellamy has his own mission on Earth, to do whatever the hell he wants, whenever the hell he wants, forcing his beliefs on the delinquents who splinter off from the purpose of their ‘mission’ on the planet: to see if the Earth is habitable.

To learn what happens both on the Ark and on Earth, make sure to watch the debut episode of The 100 on The CW on March 19 at 9/8c.

On the last day of Comic-Con 2013, some of the top sci-fi authors gathered for a panel entitled “Witches and Fey, Monsters and Mortals” about all those things that go bump in the night for which they have created for their books.

The panelists included the following:

Rachel Caine, the author of The Weather Warden series, The Red Letter Days series, The Morganville Vampires series (which is actually being made into an online series), The Athena Force series, The Outcast Season series and The Revivalist series;

Brom (aka Gerald Brom), the author of Metamorphosis, Offerings, Brom’s Little Black Book, Darwerks: The Art of Brom, The Plucker, The Devil’s Rose, The Child Thief and Krampus the Yule Lord;

Leigh Bardugo, the author of The Witch of Duva and the books of the Grisha trilogy, including Shadow and Bone and Siege and Storm.

Seanan McGuire, the author of the InCryptid series and the October Daye series;

Amber Benson, the author of the Calliope Reaper-Jones series and the Ghosts of Albion series (TV viewers will also recognize Amber for her recurring role on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer);

C. Robert Cargill, the author of Queen of the Dark Things and Dreams and Shadows;

Morgan Rhodes, the author of the Falling Kingdoms series; and,

S.M. (Shannon) Wheeler, the author of Sea Change.

Some of the authors first talked about their backgrounds and how that differs greatly from what they are doing now; such as Rachel who shared that she studied accounting and music in college and Robert stated that he is a “history buff”, but that actually helped in his writing because what we know as fantasy “was someone else’s religion” at one point in time. And, Leigh shared that she was an English major (which obviously helped in her career path) and that she wanted to make the creatures from the dark ages into literal beings that would “scare the crap” out of her readers.

And some of the authors then talked about what drew them to their particular creations with Brom sharing that “monsters don’t know they are monsters” and “one person’s God is another person’s demon” so it was interesting for him to develop the creatures in his stories and in his artwork.

When the subject of whether they designed their own creatures or created them from research, Robert shared that he “did create a fairy based on mythology” while Seanan stated that she “does both”. Then Brom shared that “he feels like he is role-playing with his monsters”, making it easier to design them.

Of course the subject of what character in pop culture scares each of the authors most brought out quite different answers:

• Morgan – Pinhead from Hellraiser and the girl from The Ring
• Robert – Freddie Kreuger
• Rachel – The gentlemen from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
• Shannon – The creatures in the video game Silent Hill
• Seanan – Creep Show 2
• Brom proudly announced that “he loves monsters” and it is actually “his happy place” but he does not like parasites.

Then the discussion turned to what each of the authors are currently working on:

• Shannon – Sea Change sequel
• Morgan – Fallen Kingdom book 3
• Robert – Dreams & Shadows sequel, a possible Sinister movie sequel as well as a possible adaptation of the movie in video game format
• Amber – A new series of books with the working title “Witches of Echo Park”
• Seanan – Working on six different, ongoing projects
• Leigh – Book three of her current series
• Brom – A collection of illustrations and a fifth novel
• Rachel – The Morganville Vampires online series and for the first time in 20 years, she is taking some much deserved time off

Much too soon, the panel had to come to an end with a short Q&A from the audience; and that brought to an end my last day at Comic Con 2013 as well.
