Actor Micahel McMillian (True Blood, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) has long been a fan of comics. Finally, after years of work in development programs and with other publishing companies, McMillian’s dream of writing a book has come true with the help of his long time comic shop, Golden Apple.

Golden Apple Comics is branching out into publishing, McMillian’s book being one of the first. A fantasy story where the hero is the long lost heir to a kingdom, Adventure Van, is a tale of coming of age and true friendship.

At Comic Con last month, I had a chance to talk with McMillian about the process of writing this book and what he loves most about the story. Watch below for his take on writing comics, his inspiration and a little big about the journey for everyone involved.

Adventure Van is available today.

At the start of San Diego Comic Con for the last five years, Her Universe, the company that is bringing more fannish fashion to the masses, puts on a show for Haute Couture designs with flare and plenty of effort.

This year, 24 designs walked down the runway, full of whim and flare. Feathers, sequins, transformative reveals and more than one gender-bend interpretation filled the evening that saw fans of all genres voting on one winner with two others chosen by a team of talented judges. Winners are set to design fashions for the line based on the next Avengers film.

What’s great about this show – besides looking at how well designers are able to render something high concept with a geek spin – is that the audience can watch as people passionate about fandom make inspired costumes without being cosplay. The reveals and dramatic turns make for a great few hours, and the models (who are sometimes the designers themselves) have a great time walking the runway.

Each designer is truly inspired by a film or TV show to create a look that speaks to the show without looking like it was made for the movie.

The winners, especially, are able to capture the spirit of their fandom in a way that makes you go, “Oh yes! I get that reference.

But what made this show different from the one I attended last year was a surprise guest. Her Universe had copies of some of their new Doctor Who fashions at the con (the feature is the Thirteenth Doctor’s first costume – trench, tee and pants). Jodie Whittacker, after being part of the panel for the show that morning came out to walk the runway in her signature trench, before talking about being the first female doctor and how there are ways to look at the role as being universal.

The trench and opening outfit can be worn by both genders without question. (At Gallifrey One this February there were already a number of men and women in outfits like the Thirteenth’s new one.)

Jodie took time to tease a few things of the new season, even as her showrunner, Chris Chibnall, looked on and recorded her.

Check out the winning looks below as well as Jodie with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckhart.

Comic Con 2018 has come to an end and while the final day of the annual fete tends to be a lighter day in terms of panel programmed there were still some interesting TV shows on tap. And, I’ve included a whole slew of pictures of cosplayers further below.

Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now, EZ must carve out his new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp.

Legion (FX)

Legion:
Ben Travers, John Cameron, Jeph Loeb, Nathaniel Halpern, Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, Jeremie Harris and Navid Negahban [Photo Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty Image/Zimbio]

A 15 minute recap of the previous season aired before the panelists took to the stage where they revealed that when it comes to the show’s future they know almost nothing. In fact, writer and producer Nathaniel Halpern stated a flat “no” when asked if he could reveal anything about next year. When asked for his own perspective on where the show goes next, Dan Stevens said this: “I know that Lenny is obviously gonna have a part to play in it. We’re off together in some form. Syd’s a bit mad. But I don’t know very much at this stage.” [Don Kaye and Matthew Jackson at Syfy Wire]

OTHER TV TRAILERS

Roswell, New Mexico (The CW)

This reboot is focused on Roswell, New Mexico, ground zero for those who seek proof that aliens exist. Roswell native Liz Ortecho left it all behind 10 years ago, after the death of her beloved older sister, Rosa. But with her father ailing, she reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown to move back in with him. When Liz arrives, she reconnects with Max Evans, her teenage crush who is now a Roswell police officer. Their chemistry is instantly electric. But Liz soon discovers a shocking truth: Max is an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life, along with those of his otherworldly siblings, Isobel and Michael. As the two grow closer after a decade apart, Liz finds it difficult to keep the truth from her best friend, Maria De Luca, and her trusting high school ex, Dr. Kyle Valenti. Also hiding their extraterrestrial origins are Isobel and Michael, with Isobel not even revealing the truth to her husband, Noah, and Michael keeping his identity hidden beneath a bad-boy exterior of hard living and casual hookups. Meanwhile, a long-standing government conspiracy spearheaded by Master Sgt. Jesse Manes, along with the politics of fear and hatred that run rampant in Roswell, threatens to expose Max and his family, and could endanger his deepening romance with Liz as well as their lives.

The Roz Report

Roz had the opportunity today to interview Sarah Kuhn, author of the Heroine books starring Asian American superheroines. She also wrote the romantic comedy novella One Con Glory, which is in development as a feature film. That full article will be published in a few weeks.

And, be on the look-out for other reports from Roz from her time at San Diego Comic Con 2018 very soon.

COSPLAYERS

Here are loads of pictures from Saturday night’s Masquerade and just some of the Cosplayers at San Diego Comic Con.
