COMING TO AN END

The offshoot series Vikings: Valhalla derived from History Channel’s Vikings will come to an end on Netflix after its upcoming third season, which is set to debut in 2024. (IGN and TV Line)

SERIES ORDER

Despite the recent cancellations of four original scripted shows over at Starz, the cabler has given an 8-episode order to The Hunting Wives, based on the May Cobb book. The story follows Sophie O’Neil and her family’s move from the East Coast to deep red East Texas, where she succumbs to socialite Margo Banks’ charms and finds her life consumed by obsession, seduction and murder. Hey All,

Here are the few entertainment news items from this past week, but first let’s all cheer the Writers Guild of America as an agreement was finally made between them and the studios last week.

CANCELLATIONS

Starz has pulled the plug on the sophomore shows Run the World, Blindspotting and the Stephen Amell drama Heels. They have also scrapped plans for the new drama The Venery of Samantha Bird, which had been in development. (TV Line)

MUSICAL ADAPTATION

The 2004 comedy 13 Going on 30 which starred Jennifer Garner (Alias and The Last Thing He Told Me), is getting a musical stage adaptation from its original writers, Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa. 13 Going on 30 The Musical is set to premiere next summer. (Variety)

RENEWALS

Mayor of Kingstown has been renewed for a third season, and it looks like Jeremy Renner is set to return as Mike McLusky. (TV Line)

TV CASTING NEWS

Actor Peter Gadiot (Queen of the South and Yellowjackets) and actress Eliza Taylor (The 100) have joined the cast of season 2 of the reboot of Quantum Leap, which will be returning this fall; one of the few dramas that will be airing this season. Gadiot will play Tom Westfall, a U.S. Army Officer, former special forces, who is now high up in Army Intelligence. Meanwhile, Taylor will play Hannah Carson, a complex young woman who may be more than she appears. (Variety)

RENEWALS/CANCELLATIONS

HBO has pulled the plug on the controversial music industry drama The Idol that starred singer The Weeknd and actress Lily-Rose Depp after only one season. (Variety and TV Line)

Hulu has pulled the plug on the historical satire series The Great after three seasons. This announcement comes just a little over three months after the show aired its third season. (TV Line)

Netflix has given a third season renewal to the small screen adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer, which stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in the lead role. The 3rd season, however, will not see Neve Campbell return as a series regular. (TV Line)

CANCELLATIONS

Amazon Prime Video has pulled the plug on the sci-fi drama The Peripheral after only one season; and the streamer has pulled the plug on season two of A League of Their Own despite getting a renewal for a second and final season. (TV Line)

MAKING A COMEBACK

The Netflix fantasy series Warrior Nun which was cancelled by the streamer after two seasons, will return as a trilogy of movies thanks, in great part, to fan support of the series, which revolves around a 19-year-old woman, who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers she now is part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her. (Deadline)

The entertainment news is few and far between because of the strikes, but what follows are the few news items for this past week:

TV CASTING NEWS

Alexa Davalos, who played Agent Kristin Gaines in FBI: Most Wanted will not be returning for the show’s upcoming 5th season. Supposedly it was an “amicable” departure. (TV Line)

Jodi Balfour, who played NASA astronaut-turned-President Ellen Waverly, will not be returning as a series regular for season 4 of For All Mankind, but she will appear in “some capacity, bringing closure to her storyline.” (TV Line)

SERIES GREENLIGHT

HBO has given a greenlight to the half-hour comedy series The Franchise that will go behind-the-scenes of a fictional struggling superhero movie. The official description is: “The crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. The Franchise shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every fuck-up has an origin story.” The series will star Himesh Patel (Yesterday) and Aya Cash (The Boys) along with Billy Magnussen, Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl [among others]. AMC has given both The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon second season renewals. Dead CIty just came to an end recently and Daryl Dixon hasn’t even debuted its first season yet. (TV Line)

COMIC CON ANNOUNCEMENT

In more The Walking Dead news, the long-awaited spin-off that is set to reunite Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira has been given a title: The Walking Dead: The ONes Who Live. The series is slated to premiere sometime next year. (Comic Con International)

TV CASTING NEWS

Manifest alum Melissa Roxburgh will guest star in the second season premiere of Quantum Leap this fall on NBC. Francois Arnaud (Midnight Texas), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal and Blindspot), and P.J. Byrne (The Boys) will also appear in the episode. (TV Line)
