Hey All,

I have been doing these year-end round-ups for well over 5 years now and much like critics and bloggers, who make their best of and worst of for the television season, I compile my lists in much the same way. The difference with my lists is that I don’t just cover television. I focus on a wide range of categories such as ratings, movies, events and much more. Of course, since I am primarily a couch potato at heart, I cover a lot of television for both of the TV seasons from this calendar year (2009-2010 and 2010-2011).

But, before I delve into all the sections of this year’s round-up, I have to share a few selfish goals for which I set for myself this year. Each year I aim to read at least 30 books, see at least 30 movies, attend as many television-related events as I can afford and am able to fit into my schedule and, of course, watch approximately 25 hours (if not more) of programming each week.

BOOKS: In terms of reading 30 books this year, I got through about 25 this year, including a number of Jane Austen themed books (all of which were very fun reads), a Nora Roberts trilogy as well as a Jeaniene Frost trilogy and “The Host” by Stephenie Meyer (among others). I know that reading an actual paperback book seems to be a lost art now-a-days especially with Kindles all the rage, but it is a worthwhile hobby.

MOVIES: In this year’s round-up, I have an entire section devoted to the movies that were released this year; but again, I’m being a bit selfish in saying that I surpassed my goal by being able to see 35 movies by the end of the year.

EVENTS: I have lived in California now for over 10 years (I still can’t believe that it has been that long) and have been very fortunate to attend a lot of amazing TV-related events over that time. This year, like many years before, I attended a lot of events at the Paley Center for Media, including their annual Paley Fest. This year I was in the audience for the following Paley Fest events: Lost, NCIS, The Vampire Diaries, FlashForward and Glee. The other Paley Center panels for which I was able to attend this year included the 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother, Castle, White Collar, Psych, Lone Star, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, the Hart to Hart Reunion and a 2nd Psych panel that this time also featured some of the cast of Twin Peaks, who were making a special appearance in an episode of Psych as well as the Paley Center’s annual Fall Preview Parties.

As usual, I also attended Comic Con in July, the annual UCLA Book Fair in April as well as a Supernatural convention coordinated by Creation Entertainment in March. In addition, I attended some new events like the Writer’s Guild Salute to Melissa Rosenberg, the writer of the Twilight movie franchise; a Drop Dead Diva season premiere event and an appearance by the cast of Pretty Little Liars, which included a reading by the book’s author Sara Shepard and a special screening of the mid-season premiere of Caprica.

But now, without further ado, here are my highlights for 2010 (UPDATE: one new section will be posted each hour until lunch time over the course of the next few days). I do apologize in advance for any omissions, spelling errors or oversights I may have made, but I don’t apologize for any of the choices I have made.

One last thing: Please let me know what you thought of the past year in entertainment and any thoughts you have on my year-end round-up, as I would love to hear your thoughts.

Television Tidbits

The following list showcases a number of television tidbits that have arisen over the last couple of weeks:

1. It does not look like ABC will be renewing its summer series The Gates especially since there has been no news – whatsoever – from the network about the future (or lack thereof) of the show.

2. CBS has been touting their new series (and reboot of the classic) Hawaii Five-0 as the number one new show of the fall season since right after the pilot aired. The ratings certainly seem to reflect that theory. The network also has the second most watched new show of the fall season: Blue Bloods

3. So far this season (all three weeks of it), the FOX series Lone Star has been canceled and the new ABC series My Generation has been canceled as well. The new NBC series Outlaw has not been officially canceled, but production on the show has been halted, making it – more than likely – the next show to be pulled from the primetime landscape.

4. The outlook for several other new fall shows, including Chase and Undercovers on NBC and The Whole Truth on ABC are less than optimistic. Any of these shows could easily be the next one to go.

5. The returning shows that are currently in jeopardy of not being renewed include Fringe and The Good Guys on FOX, Parenthood and Chuck on NBC and Medium on CBS. While it is too soon to tell if the networks will, indeed, pull the plug on any of these shows, but the numbers are not very positive. Of course, Fringe and Chuck have received low ratings in past seasons but have both been renewed, but that luck could change this time around.

6. A number of bloggers and critics are touting the new AMC series Rubicon as the best new show that no one is watching. The ratings certainly reflect that the show is not performing well; and despite a terrific cast and an interesting premise, Rubicon is an extremely slow moving series. With only two more episodes to air I can’t imagine the action getting any better.

7. The REAL best new show of the season that no one is watching (at least in my estimation) is the FX series Terriers, which – yes – has a terrible name that doesn’t fully reflect the premise of the show. The show is actually very compelling and gripping to watch. It airs Wednesdays at 10 PM and is worth a look if you haven’t seen it yet.

8. Two returning shows – Castle on ABC and Glee on FOX – have experienced even higher ratings this season than last. In fact, both shows have been in the top 30 shows for all three weeks of the fall season.

9. Syfy has decided to air both of their shows Stargate Universe and Caprica on Tuesday nights with Sanctuary the only show returning to Friday nights. However, the ratings for the latter two shows on their new night are very low compared to their previous numbers. It would seem to make sense for the network to move SGU and Caprica back to Friday nights, having a 3-hour block of programming, but perhaps that just isn’t feasible for the network.

10. Nearly all of the new shows this season have seen drops in their ratings over the past three weeks. These shows include The Event and Law & Order: Los Angeles on NBC; The Defenders on CBS and No Ordinary Family on ABC. Of these four shows, The Event has experienced the worst viewer fall out.

11. Remarkably, the two new shows on the CW Hellcats and Nikita – are both holding their own with decent ratings. Hellcats is averaging 2.3 million viewers with Nikita averaging 3 million viewers. Since this network does not air in as many markets as the major networks, these averages are on course with the averages for their hit shows The Vampire Diaries, Smallville and Supernatural.

If you have any questions about new and/or returning shows, please ask.

Based on same recent search categories that readers have been inputting here at Rueben’s Ramblings, I wanted to send out a quick message about topics for which I do NOT cover as well as reiterate the topics for which I do provide coverage.

1. I am not a fan of TV comedies (such as Modern Family, Cougar Town, et al) and will not be reporting on them. While these shows may be deserving of coverage, I do not watch them and am not the right person for which to comment on them.

2. I do not get involved in anything related to politics, current events or anything you see on any news program (cable channel or network TV). I prefer to remain oblivious to all of those topics nor will I talk about those topics here.

3. Reality TV is not a subject of interest to me at all! I believe that form of “entertainment” to be wasteful of programming space and does not deserve one moment to be wasted on it.

4. I do not focus on celebrity rumor and/or scandal or anything pertaining to the personal lives of anyone involved in the entertainment industry. To me, it is simply none of our business.

5. I am not a sports fan – never have been, never will be – and I will not provide any kind of coverage, articles, ratings numbers (et al) on sports programs.

Now, what I will provide to readers – to the best of my ability – are news items and articles about network and cable dramas, made-for-TV movies, box office movies, popular music, TV and/or movie related events, general TV news (such as development deals, award presentations and charity events), DVD releases, web series (such as Dr. Horrible, Riese and The Guild) and, hopefully very soon, book reviews and/or book recommendations.

If you like any of the items shown immediately above, then you’ve come to the right place and I hope you will stop by as often as you can.

Thanks! And, enjoy!

Random TV “Stuff”

I’ve noticed some of the search topics that readers have been inputting into the site lately and I wanted to post a quick note about them in regards to what I know about those subjects:

The Gates – The series finished with it’s two-hour season finale last night; but no official announcement has been made about ABC renewing the show. Once an official announcement is made, though, I will post about it (most likely in one of my daily entertainment updates).

The Glades – The show has been renewed by A&E for a second season and there are two more episodes left of the current season.

Scoundrels – The summer ABC series did not perform that well in the ratings (nor did The Gates for that matter); but the likelihood of Scoundrels being renewed for a second season is slim.

Army WivesLifetime has yet to make an official renewal announcement for this show – or Drop Dead Diva for that matter – but it’s highly anticipated that both shows will be back. The spin-off from Army Wives was NOT picked up by Lifetime, though.

Unnatural History – There is no confirmation from the Cartoon Network about a second season renewal for the network’s first live action series yet. Once it is officially announcement, though, I will hopefully have those details here. Again, most likely in one of my daily entertainment updates.

Boardwalk Empire – I do not know the intro song for this new HBO series, as I haven’t watched the pilot; and to be honest probably will not be watching the series; but if anyone can help out with details, please share.

Lastly, if you have any questions about your favorite TV show(s), an upcoming made-for-TV movie or box office release or anything entertainment related, please feel free to email me at ruebenpreymate@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to answer you. If I don’t know the answer, I will be honest and let you know or do my best to find out the best answer I can.

Thanks!

Under the Weather

I stayed home from work today to fight off the dreaded “con crud” (a nasty version of head cold and cough that usually comes from attending Comic Con), which I came down with AFTER I got home from the convention. I was doing okay the first couple of days, but the cold and cough kicked me in the ass last night and I had to stay home to get some much needed sleep. The news will be slow going from my end today, as I nurse myself better; but I will get an update done today if it’s the only thing I do today. Be well my friends!

Due to the computer drama for which I am dealing with at home, the entertainment update I had hoped to complete and post yesterday will not be up until tonight (at the earliest). That update will cover the news from July 21 all the way through to today (July 27). I hope that my computer drama doesn’t last too much longer and that I can get back to a “normal” schedule very soon because I have a lot of notes to transcribe from Comic Con, articles to write for NiceGirlsTV and pictures that I want to share with everyone. Wish me luck!
