Along Came a Nanny

The Hallmark Movie & Mysteries (formerly the Hallmark Movie Channel) original movie Along Came a Nanny will debut on October 12 at 9 PM.

As a series of burglaries plague an upscale, gated community, handsome detective Mike Logan (Cameron Mathison from The Christmas Ornament) goes undercover as a nanny, infiltrating the neighborhood and investigating the crimes. When the Bannermans, a high maintenance family in need of domestic assistance, hire Mike as their nanny, he forms an unlikely bond with the Bannerman children and develops a crush on Jessie (Sarah Lancaster from Chuck), a beautiful nanny who works nearby. Struggling in his new role, an overwhelmed Mike soon falls out of favor with the children, who sense they’re in less than capable hands.

Left Behind
Opens: October 3

Based on the book of the same name, Nicolas Cage stars as Ray Steele, a jumbo jet pilot who tries to calm his hysterical passengers who saw loved ones vanish before their eyes; and it seems millions of other people around the globe have simply vanished. The cast includes Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Lea Thompson, Jordin Sparks, Nicky Whelan and Quinton Aaron.

Gone Girl
Opens: October 3

Based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, a man whose wife – Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) – has disappeared. Her disappearance becomes the focus of an intense media circus with Nick becoming a prime suspect. The cast includes Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Tyler Perry, Scoot McNairy, Casey Wilson (Happy Endings) and Sela Ward

Men, Women & Children
Opens: October 3

The film follows the story of a group of high school teenagers and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self-image and their love lives. The cast includes Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, Emma Thompson, Ansel Elgort, Dean Norris, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dennis Haysbert, Kaitlyn Dever and J.K. Simmons.

The Good Lie
Opens: October 3

Reese Witherspoon stars as employment agency counselor who has an encounter with Sudanese refugees, given a chance to resettle in, of all places, Kansas. The film co-stars Corey Stoll and newcomers Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany and Emmanuel Jal.

Dracula Untold
Opens: October 10

This film is an origins story of a man – Vlad III Tepes (the man who becomes the mythological Dracula), who strikes a deal with dark forces in order to protect his family and battle the sultan Mehmed (Dominic Cooper) hell-bent on conquering everything in his path. The cast includes Sarah Gadon and Charlie Cox.

Kill the Messenger
Opens: October 10

The film is based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb (James McAvoy), taking place in the mid-1990’s when Webb uncovered the CIA’s past role in importing huge amounts of cocaine into the U.S. that was aggressively sold in ghettos across the country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army. Despite pressure not to, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public, experiencing a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA, making Webb defend his integrity, his family and his life. The cast includes Barry Pepper, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Paz Vega, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, Richard Shiff, Andy Garcia and Robert Patrick.

The Judge
Opens: October 10

Big city lawyer Henry “Hank” Palmer (Robert Downey, Jr.), a successful lawyer, returns to his hometown of Carlinville, Indiana for his mother’s funeral only to discover that his estranged father, Judge Joseph Palmer (Robert Duvall) is suspected of murder. He has to now defend his father in court against Dwight Dickham (Billy Bod Thornton), a prosecutor determined to see Joseph put away. The cast includes Vera Farmiga, Dax Shepard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Leighton Meester, David Krumholtz, Balthazar Getty and Sarah Lancaster.

Whiplash
Opens: October 10

Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is a 19-year-old jazz drummer, dreaming of greatness but unsure if his dream will ever come true. Haunted by the failed writing career of his father, Andrew is determined to rise to the top of the country’s most elite music conservatory. He is discovered by Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), a conductor known for his talent for teaching and for his terrifying method of instruction. He ignites a passion in Andrew to achieve his goals. He cast includes Melissa Benoist (Glee), Austin Stowell, Jayson Blair and Paul Reiser.

Birdman
Opens: October 17

A washed-up actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – struggles to mount a Broadway play while battling his ego and family trouble. The film also stars Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Amy Ryan, Merritt Wever and Zach Galifianakis.

Fury
Opens: October 17

It is April 1945. The Allies make their final push in the European Theatre where a battle-hardened Army Sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. The cast includes Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Scott Eastwood, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs, Xavier Samuel, Michael Pena and Jim Parrack.

Rudderless
Opens: October 17

Sam (Billy Crudup) is a former high-profile advertising executive whose life has been torn apart by the tragic death of his son. Off the grid, living on a docked sailboat, he drowns his pain in alcohol. When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, he learns each song and eventually musters the will to play one at a local bar. When Quentin (Anton Yelchin), a young musician in the audience, is captivated by the song, the unlikely duo forms a rock band that becomes surprisingly popular and changes both of their lives. The cast includes Selena Gomez, Jamie Chung, Laurence Fishburne, Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy (who also directed the film).

The Best of Me
Opens: October 17

This Nicholas Sparks film focuses on two former high school sweethearts Amanda Collier (Liana Liberato) and Dawson Cole (Luke Bracey) who are reunited after 20 years for a funeral in their hometown. This tragedy just may be the spark that reignites their loved. The adult versions of the characters will be played by Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden. The cast also includes Gerald McRaney and Jon Tenney.

The Book of Life
Opens: October 17

This animated film is about Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Voices will be provided by Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo, Ice Cube and Cheech Marin.

Laggies
Opens: October 24

When 28-year-old Megan (Kiera Knightley) visits her 11-year high school reunion, she realizes that very little has changed in her life. She still lives with her high school boyfriend Anthony, and works as a sign flipper for her father’s accounting company. When her boyfriend proposes, she panics and crosses paths with 16-year-old Annika (Chloe Grace Moretz). The cast includes Sam Rockwell, Gretchen Mol and Kaitlyn Dever.

St. Vincent
Opens: October 24

Bill Murray stars as St. Vincent, a drunken, gambling war veteran retiree, who gets recruited by his single-mom neighbor Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) to watch over her undersized 12-year-old son Oliver (newcomer Jaeden Lieberher); but his ideas of after-school activities involve racetracks and strip clubs, but eventually the mismatched pair begin to help each other grow up. The cast also includes Naomi Watts and Chris O’Dowd.

White Bird in a Blizzard
Opens: October 24

Kat Connor (Shailene Woodley) is very close to her mother Eve (Eva Green); close enough that Kat could never imagine what she would do if something ever happened to her. One day, Kat was waiting for a call from her mother and it was a call that never came. Kat’s life is turned upside down as she vows to find her mother no matter what, which changes her life forever. The film also stars Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Angela Bassett, Gabourney Sidibe, Sheryl Lee and Thomas Jane.

Miss Marple Endless Night

PBS will air the Miss MarpleEndless Night” at 9 PM.

Acclaimed British actress Julia McKenzie (Cranford) returns as spinster sleuth Miss Marple. Miss Marple befriends a charming working-class chauffeur who recounts his romance with an American heiress. Despite being warned off by an elusive gypsy woman, they plan their dream home at a local spot known as Gypsy’s Acre. Not long after the young couple is wed, a tragic death fuels speculation of a gypsy curse. When two suspicious deaths follow, Miss Marple begins to sort out the clues, but can she solve the mystery before she finds herself in danger?

The cast includes Tom Hughes (Silk) and Joanna Vanderham (The Paradise).

Midnight MasqueradeThe Hallmark Channel movie Midnight Masquerade will air on September 27 at 9 PM.

A beautiful, young businesswoman (Autumn Reeser from The O.C.) inherits her father’s billion-dollar candy company and searches to find romance in the mysterious, handsome “prince” she danced with at a costume ball.

The cast includes Christopher Russell and Richard Burgi.

A Caribbean Mystery

On September 21, PBS will air season 7 of Miss Marple, starting with the movie “A Caribbean Mystery” at 8 PM followed by “Greenshaw’s Folly” at 9:30 PM.

A Caribbean Mystery stars acclaimed British actress Julia McKenzie (Cranford) as spinster sleuth Miss Marple. While staying at a lavish tropical island hotel, Miss Marple investigates the sudden death of a fellow guest. With the help of a curmudgeonly business tycoon, Miss Marple unravels a web of deceit, murder and “dark magic,” leaving her to consider every one of the hotel’s guests as a suspect.

The cast include MyAnna Buring (Downton Abbey) and Charity Wakefield (Any Human Heart).

Greenshaw's Folly

Greenshaw’s Folly focus on what happens when an old family friend and her young son turn to Miss Marple for assistance, she places them at nearby Greenshaw’s Folly, the family home of an eccentric botanist. But it becomes clear that the labyrinthine Folly isn’t quite the safe house that Miss Marple had hoped, when death casts its dark and sinister shadow on the residents.

Perfect on Paper

On September 20, Perfect on Paper is the new Hallmark Channel movie that will debut at 9 PM.

An idealistic, young book editor reluctantly moves to Los Angeles to edit a famous author’s latest romance novel. As she struggles to maintain her integrity while battling the best-selling diva’s demands, she meets two very different men and learns that the best romantic choice is not always the one who looks best “on paper”.

The cast includes Lindsay Hartley (Passions), veteran actress Morgan Fairchild, Kieren Hutchison (the movie Flower Girl, Wildfire and One Tree Hill) and Drew Fuller (Army Wives).

The Lifetime biopic The Brittany Murphy Story will debut on September 6 at 8 PM.

Amanda Fuller (Last Man Standing and Grey’s Anatomy) will portray Brittany Murphy, with Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks and Ray Donovan) set to play her mother, Sharon Murphy. The movie will recount the story of Brittany’s younger years, including her mother’s efforts to turn her talented daughter into a star in the 1980s and ’90s, leading up to her unexpected death.

NOTE: I’m not really sure why they are making the movie run like a murder mystery rather than a story about her life and tragic death.

Saved by the Bell

On September 1, The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story will debut on Lifetime at 9 PM.

This made-for-TV movie will delve into the experiences of six unknown young actors placed into the Hollywood spotlight, exposing the challenges of growing up under public scrutiny while trying to maintain the squeaky clean image of their popular characters both on and off-screen.

The cast will include Dylan Everett (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the role of Zack Morris; Sam Kindseth (Shameless) is Dustin Diamond, in the role of Screech; Julian Works (Modern Family) as Mario Lopez in the role of A.C. Slater; Alyssa Lynch (The High Jumping Witch) as, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, the one and only Kelly Kapowski; Tiera Skovbye (Supernatural) as Elizabeth Berkley in the role of Jessie Spano and Taylor Russell McKenzie (Blink) as Lark Voorhies in the role of Lisa Turtle.

Houdini

The History Channel two-night event Houdini will start on September 1 at 9 PM.

Adrien Brody will star as Erik Weisz (aka Harry Houdini) in this biopic that follows the man behind the magic as he finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era. The mini will chronicle the life of a man who could defy death through his stunts, his visions and his mastery of illusion.

Kristen Connolly (House of Cards and The Cabin in the Woods) will star as Houdini’s wife Bess and Evan Jones (Gangster Squad and A Million Ways to Die in the West) will play Jim Collins.

A woman (Nicole Kidman) wakes up every day with no recollection of the day before. Recalling her past is tricky because she learns of an attempted murder on her life and attempts to unravel the mystery behind it, making her leery of whether or not she can trust her husband (Colin Firth). Mark Strong co-stars.

Dolphin Tale 2
Opens: September 12

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick, Jr.), rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman), who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. The team must find a companion for her before Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium. The cast includes Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Cozi Zuehlsdorff.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby

Connor Ludlow (James McAvoy) and Eleanor Rigby (Jessica Chastain) are a young married couple living in New York. During the course of their daily lives, the couple encounters a life changing event that threatens the stability of their marriage. The cast includes Viola Davis, William Hurt, Ciaran Hinds and Archie Panjabi.

The Drop
Opens: September 12

This film takes an inside look at organized crime’s use of local New York City bars as money-laundering ‘drops’. When lonely Brooklyn bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) uncovers a drop of a different sort in the form of a battered pit bull puppy that he rescues from certain death, he comes into contact with Nadia (Noomi Rapace), a mysterious woman hiding a dark past. The cast includes the late James Gandolfini and Matthias Schoenaerts.

The Maze Runner
Opens: September 19

When Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. The cast includes Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee and Patrick Clarkson.

This is Where I Leave You
Opens: September 19

When their father passes away, four grown siblings are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. The ensemble cast includes Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Bryne, Corey Stoll, Kathryn Hahn, Connie Britton, Timothy Olyphant, Abigail Spencer, Dax Shepard, Jane Fonda and Ben Schwartz.

In 1977, Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska) travels from Alice Springs across 1,700 miles of Australian deserts to the Indian Ocean with her dog and four camels. The film also stars Adam Driver.

Jimi: All Is by My Side
Opens: September 26

Andre Benjamin stars as legendary 60’s singer Jimi Hendrix with Hayley Atwell and Imogene Poots in the year leading up to his breakout performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

The Boxtrolls
Opens: September 26

This stop-motion film tells the story of an orphaned boy named Eggs (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) who was raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors called the Boxtrolls that are targeted by an evil exterminator named Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley), and Eggs has to save his family from Snatcher. Voices will be provided by Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris and Simon Pegg.

The Equalizer
Opens: September 26

Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a solitary, ex-special ops, monastic figure who despises injustice and devotes himself to helping victims of criminals. Working at a small home improvement store by day, he befriends a girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) in his off-time at a local diner who is nearly killed by gangsters. After an initial battle, he learns they are members of the Russian mob, leading him to wage a one man war against them and their partners in crime. The cast includes Marton Csokas, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo.
