Archive for the ‘New Faces’ Category

Next week summer programming will begin in earnest on the cable (and even some of the major) networks with returning favorites coming back as well as new freshman dramas debuting in the hopes of catching viewers’ eyes.

What will also catch the eyes of many viewers are the new faces that will be cropping up all over the TV landscape over the summer. Among those fresh new faces will be the following, who appear in order of their series debut:

Maia Mitchell

Maia Mitchell – This Australian actress will star as Cassie, one of the fosters kids on the new ABC Family drama (executive produced, by the way, by Jennifer Lopez) The Fosters focuses on a “new kind of family” (much like the motto of its home network): a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms (played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum). Maia is a newcomer to the US market, but has starred in the Australian TV shows Castaway and Trapped. She will also be seen later this month in the Disney Channel movie called Teen Beach Movie (that will be reminiscent of High School Musical crossed with the box office film Pleasantville).

The Fosters will debut at 9 PM on June 3 on ABC Family.

Aaron Tveit

Aaron Tveit – This Gossip Girl alum, who also had a role in the box office film Les Miserable – has jumped into the leading role of Mike Warren on the new USA Network series Graceland that is about a group of undercover agents from the FBI, DEA and US Customs who reside and operate under one roof. Aaron has also appeared in the box office film Premium Rush and guest appearances on Ugly Betty, Body of Proof, The Good Wife and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Graceland will have its series premiere on the USA Network on June 6 at 10 PM.

Luke Newberry

Luke Newberry – This British actor will have the lead role of Kieren Walker on the BBC America 3-part mini-series In The Flesh that will take a decidedly different take of zombies, who are called PDS (Partially Deceased Syndrome) sufferers and reintegrated into their families and communities. Luke had a role in the box office film Anna Karenina, a small role in the Sherlock episode entitled “A Scandal in Belgravia” and an uncredited role in the final Harry Potter movie.

In The Flesh is set to debut on BBC America at 10 PM on June 6.

Elliot Knight

Elliot Knight – This British newcomer has the lead role in the upcoming Syfy drama Sinbad that will actually only air for one season as the decision was made not to continue the series beyond 12 episodes. The series follows the sea-bound journey of the young man after he is forced to flee from this home town of Basra. This is the first acting role for Elliot.

Sinbad will air its series premiere on June 8 at 9 PM on Syfy.

Kyle Bunbury, Avan Jogia and Maddie Hasson

Kylie Bunbury, Maddie Hasson and Avan Jogia – This trio of new faces will be the focus of the new ABC Family drama Twisted that centers on a charismatic 16-year-old with a troubled past who has recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. Jogia will play Danny Desai, the aforementioned 16-year-old while Bunbury and Hasson will play Lacey Porter and Jo Masterson (respectively), his childhood friends. Jogia is not a new face to anyone who has ever seen an episode of the Nickelodeon series Victorious and he also appeared in several episodes of Caprica and Aliens in America. Hasson is a relative newcomer who got her first big break in the short-lived series The Finder and has also appeared in an episode of Grimm while Bunbury is also a relative newcomer, appearing in the box office Prom and an episode of Days of Our Lives.

Twisted will make its debut on ABC Family on June 11 at 9 PM.

Edy Ganem

Edy Ganem – Edy will appear as Valentina Del Barrio in the Lifetime series Devious Maids that will follow five maids with ambition and dreams of their own who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Edy is a relative newcomer to TV although she has appeared in her fair share of short films. She has, however, appeared in several episodes of Entourage, an episode of CSI, the short-lived comedy Rob and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Devious Maids will air its series premiere at 10 PM on June 23 on Lifetime.

Colin Ford

Colin Ford – Colin is best known to long-time viewers of Supernatural as the younger version of Sam Winchester, but he will get a chance (hopefully) to shine in the new summer series Under the Dome from CBS. The series is based on the Stephen King novel with Colin playing teenager Joe McClatchey, one of the townsfolk of Chester’s Mill, Maine who are trapped inside a mysterious, impenetrable barrier that surrounds the town. Among Colin’s other recent credits are an episode of Revolution and the box office film We Bought a Zoo.

Under the Dome is set to debut on CBS on June 24 at 10 PM.

Demian Bichir

Demian Bichir – Demian may be a new face to most TV viewers here in the States, but for those who have seen the independent films Che and A Better Life (for which he received an Oscar nomination, by the way), then you know exactly who he is. Demian will be paired with box office actress Diane Kruger in the FX series The Bridge, playing Marco Ruiz, one half of an American-Mexican team of police detectives working to stop a serial killer menacing both sides of the border.

The Bridge will debut on FX on July 10 at 10 PM.

Garrett Clayton

Garrett Clayton – This Detroit native, who got his first big break in the Lifetime made-for-TV movie Holiday Spin (starring opposite former Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio) will be seen as Tanner in the upcoming Disney Channel movie called Teen Beach Movie that will be a mixture of High School Music and Pleasantville (as I mentioned above in the details about Maia Mitchell). Garrett also appeared in one episode of Days of Our Lives and an episode of the Disney Channel comedy Shake It Up.

Teen Beach Movie will debut on the Disney Channel on July 19 at 8 PM.

Max Irons and Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca Ferguson and Max Irons – This will be one of the hot new couples to grace the small screen this summer, as Rebecca and Max will be playing Elizabeth Woodville (the “White Queen”) and Edward IV of England respectively in the Starz 10-episode mini-series The White Queen. This series is based on the Philippa Gregory best-selling historical novel series “The Cousins’ War”. The year is 1464, before the Tudor dynasty ruled England; war has been ravaging throughout the country over who is the rightful king. Ferguson is a Swedish actress best known for her role in the soap operas Nya tider and Ocean Ave. Irons, on the other hand, just appeared in the box office film The Host and also had roles in the box office films Red Riding Hood and Dorian Gray. He is also the son of legendary actor Jeremy Irons.

The White Queen will debut on Starz on August 10 at 9 PM.

So those are my picks for the new faces of summer TV for 2013. What shows (or made-for-TV movies) are looking forward to seeing on the small screen this summer? Have there been any new faces that you have seen in trailers for the new shows that caught your eye? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.

The following are descriptions of the two new FOX dramas; one that will air this fall and the other that is set for mid-season. There are cast photos for both; and [UPDATED] now we have trailers to watch too:

THE MOB DOCTOR – Monday Nights at 9 PM

PREMISE: For most physicians, the Hippocratic oath is sacred. But for one Chicago doctor, who is indebted to the mafia, saving lives isn’t her only concern. A brilliant young female cardiothoracic surgeon is split between two distinct worlds, juggling her promising medical career with her lifelong debt as a doctor to Chicago’s Southside mob. Dr. Grace Devlin is a top resident at Chicago’s Roosevelt Medical Center. Smart and self-assured, she’s heralded as one of the country’s most promising young surgeons. But family ties keep her glued to her Southside roots. To pay off her brother’s life-threatening gambling debt, she makes a deal with the devil and agrees to work “off book” for the mafia men she once despised. During the day, Grace must deal with the emotionally compelling cases at Roosevelt Medical, but in her other vastly different world, she must juggle an onslaught of mob-related demands, including operating in mob-sanctioned locations, removing bullets from dead bodies to hide incriminating evidence, saving a juiced-up race horse and covertly helping an aging mobster with his erectile dysfunction. All the while, Grace must keep her dual life a secret from everyone. The only one who knows the true scope of Grace’s activities is the man to whom Grace owes her debt: the charming and diabolical Southside mob boss Constantine Alexander, an oddly compassionate killer whose relationship with Grace is more than it seems. Recently released from prison, the former head of the Chicago mob looks to reclaim his place in the organization, with the help of his right-hand associate – and Grace’s ex-boyfriend – Franco. As Grace tries to heed the demands of these two conflicting worlds – not to mention the needs of her own slightly dysfunctional family – her moral center comes into direct conflict with the very immoral things she’s asked to do. But with nerves of steel and a tough-as-nails exterior, she somehow manages to make it all work – at least for now.

CAST: Jordana Spiro (My Boys), William Forsythe (Boardwalk Empire), Floriana Lima (Poor Paul), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Jaime Lee Kirchner (Mercy), Zeljko Ivanek (Damages), James Carpinello (The Good Wife), Jesse Lee Soffer (As the World Turns) and Wendy Makkena (NCIS).

CREATIVE TEAM: Josh Berman and Rob Wright are the Executive Producers and Michael Dinner directed the pilot.

TRAILER FOR THE MOB DOCTOR:

The Mob Doctor

THE FOLLOWING – Mid-Season (No Night or Timeslot Scheduled Yet)

PREMISE: The FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll’s capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. Hardy is a walking textbook of all-things Carroll. He knows him better than anyone; he is perhaps Carroll’s only psychological and intellectual match. But the Ryan Hardy who broke the Carroll case years ago isn’t the same man today. Wounded both physically and mentally by his previous pursuit of this serial killer, it’s been a long time since Hardy has been in the field. This investigation is his redemption, his call to action. In contrast to nine years ago, Hardy isn’t calling the shots on this case. He works closely with an FBI team, which includes all-business and tough-as-nails Jennifer Mason and young, razor-sharp Mike Weston. The team considers Hardy to be more of a liability than an asset. But Hardy proves his worth when he uncovers that Carroll was covertly communicating with a network of killers in the outside world. It quickly becomes obvious that he has more planned than just a prison escape, and there’s no telling how many additional killers are out there. The FBI’s investigation leads Hardy to Claire Matthews, Carroll’s ex-wife and mother of the criminal’s 10-year-old son, Joey. Close during Hardy’s initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll’s next move. The tension rises when Carroll’s accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll’s game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started.

CAST: Kevin Bacon (Footloose and Taking Chance), James Purefoy (Rome), Jeananne Goossen (Alcatraz), Natalie Zea (Justified), newcomer Kyle Catlett, Shawn Ashmore (The X-Men franchise), Valorie Curry (Veronica Mars), Adan Canto and Nico Tortorella (Make It or Break It).

CREATIVE TEAM: The series creator is Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega directed the pilot.

14. Asa Butterfield – Asa has appeared in the box office films The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Wolfman and Nanny McPhee Returns as well as the recurring role of Mordred in the UK series Merlin; but it is his lead role in the Martin Scorsese film Hugo that has gotten him attention. Now that the networks are providing year-round programming, TV viewers are getting the chance to see a wide array of programming be it on the major or cable networks. This summer there are a number of returning favorites as well as some interesting new shows getting ready to hit the airwaves.

There will be familiar faces on these new shows as well as some up-and-coming actors and actresses for whom we should all play a little extra attention to because they just might become the next “It” girl or guy.

The following – in no particular order – are some of the faces of 2011 summer TV that I think viewers should pay closer attention to:

Tyler Posey and Crystal Reed

Tyler Posey and Crystal Reed appear in the new MTV series Teen Wolf. This much darker look at teenage werewolves (much unlike the 1980’s box office movie for which this series is very loosely based), stars Tyler in the lead role of Scott McCall, a high school student bitten by an animal only to learn it was a werewolf. That animal attack has now forever changed his life and the lives of those around him, including the new girl in school Allison (Crystal Reed) whose father just happens to be a werewolf hunter. Teen Wolf will have its two-night premiere on June 5 and 6 (check your local listings for airtimes).

Drew Roy

Where Have You Seen Them Before – Tyler was Jennifer Lopez’s little son in the box office film Maid in Manhattan and he has starred in the TV shows Doc, Brothers & Sisters, Lincoln Heights and the made-for-TV movie Into the West. Seychelle plays Lourdes, one of the other teen survivors.

Katie Leclerc

Meanwhile, Seychelle appeared in the box office films The Last Airbender and The Spirit as well as several episodes of Weeds.

Sean Berdy

Katie Leclerc and Sean Berdy are both talented hearing-impaired actors who will be star in the new ABC Family Channel series Switched at Birth, which debuts on June 6. Katie plays Daphne Vasquez, one of two babies who were inadvertently switched at birth, learning the truth of her origins at the age of 15. Sean plays Emmett, the son of Daphne’s mother’s best friend.

Where Have I Seen Them Before – Sean is a relative newcomer who has been acting since he was a little boy as a comedian and live performer. Meanwhile Katie is also fairly new, but she has appeared in small roles in Veronica Mars, The Ex List and The Riches.

Skyler Samuels and Benjamin Stone

Skyler Samuels and Benjamin Stone are two of the cast members of another new series from the ABC Family Channel called The Nine Lives of Chloe King, which debuts on June 14 (after the return of Pretty Little Liars). Skyler plays lead character Chloe King, who starts developing heightened abilities and learns she’s part of an ancient race which has been hunted by human assassins for millennia. Benjamin plays Alek Petrov, who is also from this ancient race and tries to help Chloe comes to terms with her new life.

Where Have I Seen Them Before – Skyler was one of the cast members of last summer’s TV show The Gates, but she also made guest appearances on the TV shows That’s So Raven and Wizards of Waverly Place as well as the box office movies The Stepfather and Furry Vengeance. She has also appeared in the made-for-TV movies Flight 93, Fallen and Montana Sky (based on the Nora Roberts novel) and the box office films Watchmen, Thir13en Ghosts and Trick ‘r Treat. Meanwhile, Warren was one of the cast members of October Road and the short lived series Happy Town.
