the-crown

Just last week, Netflix released its most expensive exclusive series to date, The Crown. The series follows the life of Princess Elizabeth as she navigates life before becoming Queen of England, and from other reports, the series is set to last six series.

In a pique of avoidance the other weekend, I watched the first series of the show in three days (not hard for a ten episode series), and if you’re at all curious about some of the finer aspects of the life of a member of the British Royal family, then the show is for you.

Even if I’m by no means British, the Royal Family has always been something that appealed to me. It’s also nearly impossible to avoid hearing about their lives, but a slightly fictionalized version is something else. Because, of course, there are scores of photographs documenting the life of Queen Elizabeth II, but as news, the details feel removed.

No one really knows The Queen, yet we all want to wish her well and watch how she goes about her duties. In The Crown, we see a young princess who becomes monarch and how she struggles. The struggles, and the frustrations are deftly portrayed by Claire Foy (her previous credits include Upstairs Downstairs, Little Dorrit and Wolf Hall) and in her scenes, there are deep fears and emotional scars from her childhood.

Foy is not the only strong role in the series, however. Matt Smith (Doctor Who) is the Duke of Exeter, Prince Philip, and he has this charmingly awful way of being in and around Elizabeth’s life that comes across as both fond and destructive. John Lithgow is an equally strong figure, starring as Winston Churchill.

What unfolds over the course of these episodes is not just a look at Queen Elizabeth, but a drama of the lives that surround her and how everyone chooses to make very public lives personal.

While we all know the way the narrative will go in the next series, there is a strong emotional journey to unfold, and one that maybe casts the life of Queen Elizabeth II in a new light for those who don’t pay as much attention.

ice

On November 16, the new DirecTV crime drama Ice will debut at 8 PM.

This high-impact, serialized crime drama follows the Green Family, as they plunge into the underbelly of the Los Angeles diamond trade. Jake (Cam Gigandet from The O.C. and Burlesque) and Freddy (Jeremy Sisto from Suburgatory) are half-brothers brought together by their father Isaac (Raymond J. Barry from Justified and The 100), the patriarch behind G&G Diamonds and their uncle Cam (Ray Winstone from The Departed).

After wildcard Freddy kills a prominent diamond dealer, his brother Jake must bail him out and save the family business from a crime lord of the Los Angeles diamond trade (Judith Shekoni from Heroes Reborn). Jake must endure all of this while maneuvering amongst jewelry thugs, blood diamond deals, false certificates, the Feds, and Pieter Van De Bruin (veteran actor Donald Sutherland), a ruthless Afrikaanz diamond merchant who now heads up an Antwerp-based diamond cartel with the same cutthroat skills he applied as a surgeon in the South African armed forces.

Lauren Lyle

Lauren Lyle

Outlander is adding more cast for season 3 in the form of three new young actresses. One casting announcement from last month and two from earlier this week.

First, last month’s casting announcement was for British newcomer Lauren Lyle who will play Marsali, the 18-year-old daughter of Laoghaire (Nell Hudson), who – in the third book on which the show will be based – has a “rebellious and romantic mind of her own. She knows what she wants and she goes after it — reputation and propriety be damned.”

Book readers will know that Marsali plays a prominent part in the life of adult Fergus, the adopted son of Jamie and Claire Fraser.

The casting announcements from earlier this week are for the Dunsany sisters, who play an important part in Jamie’s life – sans Claire – but I won’t spoil the exact specifics.

Actress Hannah James (Mercy Street) will play Geneva Dunsany while newcomer Tanya Reynolds will play younger sister Isobel Dunsany. Geneva is described as “beautiful (and) headstrong; spoiled and demanding. She’s used to getting exactly what she wants, but underneath that petulant exterior she’s vulnerable due to her sheltered life.” Isobel is described as “warm, friendly and genuine. She’s more likable and compassionate towards others, the opposite of her sister.”

Outlander has yet to be given an official airdate by Starz, but it is anticipated to air sometime in early 2017.

good-behavior

On November 15, the new TNT series Good Behavior will debut at 9 PM.

Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery (she played Lady Mary) stars very much against type as Letty Dobesh, a thief and con artist, who is released from prison and reunited with her 10-year-old son, who is being raised by her mother. While she regularly sees her substance-abuse counselor, whose motives for helping her are questionable, she soon overhears a hitman being hired to kill a man’s wife and sets out to prevent it, which puts her on a collision course with the killer to the point of starting a relationship with him.

conor-mccarry

Another casting announcement has been made for season 3 of Outlander.

Scottish actor Conor McCarry will play the adult version of Young Jamie, the oldest son of Jenny and Ian Murray. As fans know, Jenny is the sister of Jamie Fraser (series lead Sam Heughan) and Young Jamie is, of course, his uncle’s namesake. Young Jamie is also the heir of Lallybroch.

What happens with adult Young Jamie will depend on what direction season 3 of the show takes in comparison to the book “Voyager” on which the season will be based. Very few specific details are being released by Starz, naturally.

Conor has appeared in the films Anna Karenina and Battleship; and he had a role in the TV mini-series The Night Manager, which ironically included among its cast Tobias Menzies, who appears as Frank Randall and his 18th Century counterpart Black Jack Randall.

An official airdate has yet to be announced by Starz for season 3 of Outlander, but it is anticipated to air sometime in early 2017.
