Based on information provided by the Box Office Mojo and some internet research, here are just some of the movies you can expect to see in the movie theatres in July:
The BFG
Opens: July 1
Ten-year-old Sophie (newcomer Ruby Barnhill) is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance). Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realizes that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler (Bill Hader), Fleshlumpeater (Jermaine Clement) and other giants. After traveling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all. The film also stars Rebecca Hall (The Town), Matt Frewer (Eureka) and Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey).
The Legend of Tarzan
Opens: July 1
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood) left the jungles of Africa—where he was raised by gorillas—behind for an aristocratic life in London as John Clayton, 3rd Viscount Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane Porter (Margot Robbie from The Wolf of Wall Street) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo Free State to serve as a trade emissary of the House of Commons, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the corrupt Belgian Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz).
Our Kind of Traitor
Opens: July 1
A British couple get embroiled with a Russian oligarch and high-profile money launderer while on holiday in Marrakech. The businessman soon leads them into a tortuous journey through Paris, the Swiss Alps and London. The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Damian Lewis, Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Northam.
The Secret Life of Pets
Opens: July 8
Inside of a Manhattan apartment building, a terrier named Max (Louis C.K.) starts to get neglected as a favorite pet when his owner Katie (Ellie Kemper) presents a sloppy mongrel named Duke (Eric Stonestreet), obtained from a dog pound, which results in a rivalry for both of them. But they have to put their quarrels behind when a seemingly adorable white rabbit named Snowball (Kevin Hart) and his army of abandoned pets who call themselves the “Flushed Pets” launch a criminal conspiracy to exact retaliation on all happily-owned pets and their owners. Meanwhile a Pomeranian dog named Gidget (Jenny Slate) assembles her own ragtag group of pets to track Max and Duke down. Other voices provided by Steve Coogan, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks.
Fathers and Daughters
Opens: July 8
A Pulitzer-winning writer (Russell Crowe) grapples with being a widower and father after a mental breakdown, while, 27 years later, his grown daughter (Amanda Seyfried) struggles to forge connections of her own. The film also stars Aaron Paul, Diane Kruger, Quvenzhane Wallis, Janet McTeer, Octavia Spencer, Jane Fonda and Bruce Greenwood.
The Infiltrator
Opens: July 15
During the 1980s, U.S. Customs Service special agent Robert Mazur (Bryan Cranston) uses his undercover alias “Bob Musella” to become a pivotal player for drug lords cleaning their dirty cash. Later, he infiltrates the world’s largest cartels and helps discover the money-laundering organization of drug lord Pablo Escobar. The cast includes John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Diane Kruger, Yul Vazquez, Amy Ryan, Olympia Dukakis and Jason Issacs.
Tulip Fever
Opens: July 15
Set in the Netherlands in the early 17th century, during the period of the Tulip mania, an artist (Dane DeHaan) falls for a married young woman (Alicia Vikander) while he’s commissioned to paint her portrait by her husband (Christoph Waltz). The two invest in the risky tulip market in hopes to build a future together. The film also stars Zach Galifianakis, Judi Dench, Jack O’Connell, Holliday Grainger, Matthew Morrison, Cara Delevingne, Tom Hollander, Kevin McKidd and David Harewood.
Ice Age: Collision Course
Opens: July 22
Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapults him outside of Earth, where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the planet. To save themselves from peril, Manny (Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo), Diego (Denis Leary) and the rest of the herd leave their home and embark on a quest full of thrills and spills, highs and lows, laughter and adventure while traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters. Other voices will be provided by Queen Latifah, Simon Pegg, Jennifer Lopez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jessie J, Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes, Melissa Rauch, Michael Strahan, Nick Offerman, Max Greenfield, Carlos Ponce, Adam DeVine and Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Star Trek Beyond
Opens: July 22
The crew of the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, are attacked by a seemingly unstoppable wave of unknown aliens forcing them to abandon ship. Stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, the crew find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy. The cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, (the late) Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Danny Pudi.
