The 45th Annual San Diego Comic Con was held in San Diego from July 9 through July 12 and while I was busy covering panel rooms for TV Equals and NiceGirlsTV, our very own Dominick Dusseault was hitting up Nerd HQ, Hall H and Ballroom 20 (among other rooms) to snap as many pictures of the annual fete as possible.

Based on information provided by the Box Office Mojo and some internet research, here are just some of the movies you can expect to see in the movie theatres in August:

Dark Places
Opens: August 7

Set in a farming town in Kansas, the film follows Libby Day (Charlize Theron from Mad Max: Fury Road), the only surviving witness of a horrific massacre that took her mother and sisters. Believing the slaughter to be the work of a Satanic cult, Libby testifies in court against her own brother. Twenty-five years after the murder, she remains haunted by the gruesome violence of her past when she meets a group of amateur investigators who call themselves “The Kill Club”. Looking to satisfy their morbid curiosity, the group begins their own inquiry about the case, believing Libby’s brother is innocent. In order to help them, Libby must unearth painful memories of the event and learn that her past may not be what it seems. The film also stars Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Andrea Roth (Rescue Me), Chloe Grace Moretz (Stay and Carrie), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man and The Strain) and Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos).

Fantastic Four
Opens: August 7

When four people – Reed Richards (Miles Teller from Whiplash), Johnny Storm (Michael B Jordan from Friday Night Lights), Susan Storm (Kate Mara from House of Cards) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell from Turn: Washington’s Spies) – teleport to an alternate universe, which alters their physical form and grants them new abilities, they must learn to harness their abilities and work together as a team to save the Earth from a familiar enemy. The film also stars Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Victor von Doom and Reg E. Cathey (Grimm and Seven) as the father of Johnny and Susan.

Ricki and the Flash
Opens: August 7

Ricki (Meryl Streep) chased her dreams of becoming a famous rock star by abandoning her family. She gets a last chance to put things right when her ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline) asks her to visit Chicago and help their estranged, divorced daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer, Meryl’s real-life daughter) through a difficult time. The cast also includes Sebastian Stan (Captain America franchise), singer-actor Rick Springfield and Audra McDonald (Private Practice).

Straight Outta Compton
Opens: August 14

The film chronicles the background history of the group N.W.A, its members and the dynamics of their relationships with each other, from the band’s inception, to growing success and stardom until the eventual disbanding. The film stars Jason Mitchell (Contraband) as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins (Non-Stop) as Dr. Dre, newcomer O’Shea Jackson, Jr. as Ice Cube, Aldis Hodge (Leverage and Turn: Washington’s Spies) as MC Ren, Neil Brown, Jr. (Battle: Los Angeles) as DJ Yella as well as Paul Giamatti, Corey Reynolds (The Closer) and Alexandra Shipp (Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B).

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Opens: August 14

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s period of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) centers on agents Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill of Man of Steel) and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer from The Lone Ranger). The two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find her and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. The cast also includes Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Jared Harris (The Mortal Instruments) and Hugh Grant.

Digging for Fire
Opens: August 21

The film follows the discovery of a bone and a gun which sends a husband and wife, each full of doubts about their future and anxiety about the present, on separate adventures over the course of a weekend. The film stars Jake Johnson (New Girl), Rosemarie DeWitt (United States of Tara), Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings franchise), Brie Larson (21 Jump Street), Sam Rockwell (Moon), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Sam Elliot (I’ll See You in My Dreams), Judith Light (Who’s the Boss), Ron Livingston (Boardwalk Empire), Melanie Lynskey (Sweet Home Alabama), Chris Messina (The Mindy Project), Jenny Slate (Obvious Child) and Jane Adams (Hung).

Learning to Drive
Opens: August 21

Learning to Drive is about the unlikely friendship that develops between two very different New Yorkers. Wendy Shields (Patricia Clarkson from The Maze Runner) is a sharp-tongued author whose husband just left her, inspiring her to embrace her independence and learn how to drive. Her teacher, Darwan Singh Tur (Sir Ben Kingsley from Tut and Self/Less), is a gentle Indian cab driver with an impending arranged marriage. As Darwan teaches Wendy how to drive, they both learn valuable lessons about relationships, life, and the value of friendship. The cast includes Grace Gummer (Extant) and Jake Weber (Medium and Hell on Wheels).

Hitman: Agent 47
Opens: August 28

Based on the Hitman video games series and its main character, a mysterious assassin known only as Agent 47 (Rupert Friend from Homeland), who works for a top secret non-government organization called the International Contracts Agency, which carries out the assassinations of high profile targets worldwide. The film also stars Hannah Ware (Betrayal), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek and Heroes) and Ciaran Hinds (Phantom of the Opera and Game of Thrones).

We Are Your Friends
Opens: August 28

Cole (Zac Efron from The Lucky One), a 23-year-old DJ who struggles in the electronic dance music scene, has dreams of becoming a major record producer. Eventually, older DJ James (Wes Bentley from The Hunger Games) begins to mentor him, but Cole makes a connection with James’ girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski from Gone Girl). When Cole’s relationship with Sophie blossoms and his friendship with James begins to break down as a result, he is forced into difficult decisions over his future. The cast includes Jonny Weston (Project Almanac), Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead), Vanessa Lengies (Glee), Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) and Alicia Coppola (Jericho).

Z for Zachariah

Opens: August 28

In the wake of a disaster that wipes out most of civilization, two men and a young woman find themselves in an emotionally charged love triangle as the last known survivors. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Margot Robbie (Focus and The Wolf of Wall Street) and Chris Pine (Star Trek).

Jackie & Ryan
Opens: July 3

Ryan Brenner (Ben Barnes), a travelling musician, and Jackie Laurel (Katherine Heigl), a former singer at a crossroads in her marriage, meet by chance while Ryan is busking on the street. They share an immediate connection, but it’s fleeting, until a sudden accident propels them together. Soon, Ryan finds himself at Jackie’s house for dinner, where they discover they share more than a passion for music. Ryan’s battling to find the courage to write his own music and Jackie’s fighting an estranged husband who wants custody of her daughter. Minions
Opens: July 10

Evolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve, but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon. Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan. Accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess. Voices are provided by Pierre Coffin, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan and Geoffrey Rush.

Self/Less
Opens: July 10

An extremely wealthy aristocrat (Ben Kingsley) dying from cancer, undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). But all is not as it seems when he starts to uncover the mystery of the body’s origin, discovering the body was not the empty flesh he was promised and had a life and family before he was used for his own body, and the “organization” that will kill to protect its cause. To make matters worse, he faces the threat of losing control of the body he now possesses and its original owner’s consciousness resurfacing, which will erase his mind in the process. The cast includes Matthew Goode (The Good Wife), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome and Secrets and Lies), Victor Garber (The Flash and Alias) and Derek Luke (Captain America: The First Avenger).

Ant-Man
Opens: July 17

Thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must aid his mentor Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) in safeguarding the mystery of the Ant-Man technology – which allows its user to decrease in size but increase in strength – from various new threats, and plot a heist that will save the Earth. The film also stars Evangeline Lilly (Lost), Corey Stoll (The Strain), Bobby Cannavale (Spy), Michael Pena (End of Watch) and Judy Greer (Jurassic World and Married).

Mr. Holmes
Opens: July 17

In 1947, the long-retired Sherlock Holmes (Sir Ian McKellen), aged 93, lives in a remote Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro, and her young son, Roger. Holmes is unhappy about his ex-partner Watson’s published version of his last case, which involved a young married woman who was distraught after two failed pregnancies. Holmes hopes to write his own account, but due to the deterioration of his memory struggles to remember what happened. The cast includes Laura Linney (The Big C), Phil Davis (Poldark) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Revenge and Extant)

Paper Towns
Opens: July 24

Taking place in Orlando, Florida, Quentin “Q” Jacobsen (Nat Wolff from The Fault in Our Stars) lives next door to Margo Roth Spiegelman (Model Cara Delevingne), his childhood friend from whom he has since drifted, but still has feelings for. So when she one day climbs through his window and summons him on an all-night road trip of revenge, he cannot help but follow her lead. The next day, however, Margo doesn’t come to school, and after a few days it becomes apparent she is missing. Q soon learns that there are clues in her disappearance that seem meant for him to make sense of. But as he gets deeper into the mystery and discovers more about the person Margo actually is, he becomes less sure of who and what he is looking for. The cast includes Halston Sage (Crisis), Caitlin Carver (The Fosters), Austin Abrams (The Walking Dead), Cara Buono (Person of Interest) and relative newcomer Justice Smith.

Southpaw
Opens: July 24

Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a one-time boxer at the height of his fame, with a fancy house and a loving family, and despite his career, his wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams), pleads for him to quit so he can spend time with his daughter Leila (Oona Laurence). He announces his retirement during a party, but when Maureen is accidentally killed during an altercation with another boxer, his world falls apart. When he loses Leila to child protection services due to his destructive behavior, his last hope is returning to the world of boxing with the help of trainer Titus “Tick” Wills (Forest Whitaker) in order to reunite with Leila. The film also stars Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Skyfall) and Tyrese Gibson (Fast and Furious franchise).

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
Opens: July 31

The IMF agency comes under threat from the Syndicate, a near-mythical organization of assassins and rogue operatives who kill to order. Faced with the IMF’s disbandment, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) assembles his team for their final and most difficult mission —to prove the Syndicate’s existence and bring the organization down by any means necessary. The cast includes Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen and The Red Tent).

Scream

The new MTV thriller Scream (based on the box office film franchise) will debut on June 30 at 10 PM.

When a YouTube video goes viral, that leads to problems for teenager Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus from Arrow), and seemingly serves as the catalyst for a murder that opens up a window into the troubled past of the small town of Lakewood.

The cast includes Willa Fitzgerald (Royal Pains), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow and The Killing), Carlson Young (Key and Peele), relative newcomer John Karna, Connor Weil (Sharknado), Bobby Campo (Being Human), newcomer Amadeus Serafini, Tom Maden (Make It or Break It), Tracy Middendorf (Boardwalk Empire) and Jason Wiles (Third Watch).

Zoo

The new CBS thriller Zoo, based on the James Patterson book, will debut on June 30 at 9 PM.

James Wolk (Lone Star and Mad Men) will star as a renegade biologist, who is thrust into a race to unlock the mystery of a pandemic that begins after animals ferociously attack humans across the globe, leaving them no place to hide. The series is based on the James Patterson book of the same name.

The cast includes Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones, Dracula and Cinderella), Billy Burke (Revolution), Kristen Connolly (House of Cards), Nora Arnezeder (Mozart in the Jungle and Safe House) and Carl Lumbly (Alias).

Humans

On June 28, AMC will debut the 8-part drama Humans at 9 PM

The series follows a strained suburban family who, in the hope of transforming the way they live, purchases a refurbished Synth (basically a humanized android) only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences.

The series stars William Hurt and Colin Morgan (Merlin) [among others].

Mr. Robot

On June 24, the new USA Network drama Mr. Robot will debut at 10 PM.

This new series follows a mysterious anarchist (Christian Slater) who recruits a young computer programmer (Rami Malek from 24 and The Pacific) who suffers from an anti-social disorder and connects to people by hacking them.

The cast includes Gloria Reuben (ER), Portia Doulbeday (Youth in Revolt) and Carly Chaikin (Suburgatory)
