The folks over at TV Line, posted the casting details earlier today for NBC‘s upcoming drama series Emerald City that will take a whole new look at Dorothy Gale and her trip to the land of Oz. Given the fact that I love to play casting agent, I’ve come up with my own ideas on who should play the roles.

It is too early to say who will actually be cast or how good (or bad) this new drama will be, but the show is set for the 2014-2015 TV season, but has yet to be given a timeslot.

Here are the descriptions of the characters followed by my casting choices:

Danielle Savre

Danielle Savre

DOROTHY GALE

A natural, and not waify, beauty scarred by past experiences, Dorothy has patched a life together for herself despite the fact that she sells herself short. Outward insecurity and lack of self awareness hide the savior/survivor that she will discover she truly is.

My Casting Choice: Danielle Savre who played doomed cheerleader Jackie Wilcox on Heroes, also appeared in the failed Supernatural: Bloodlines pilot. She has also appeared in Summerland, Grounded for Life and the short-lived MTV drama Kaya.

Haley Webb

Haley Webb

WEST

This 30something femme is a corruptive — and fearsome — force of nature, a drugged-out virtuoso filled with self-loathing. She’s equal parts compelling and unsettling.

My Casting Choice: Haley Webb, best known for her role of Jennifer Blake on Teen Wolf, has also appeared in episodes of Shark, Close to Home and Beauty And the Beast.

Genevieve Padalecki

Genevieve Padalecki

NORTH

In her 30s or 40s, this Type-A manipulative perfectionist has a bit of a “big sister” relationship to West.

My Casting Choice: Genevieve (Cortese) Padalecki had the lead role in the ABC Family drama Wildfire, but is best known for role of Ruby on Supernatural. She also appeared in the short-lived drama FlashForward.

Robbie Amell

Robbie Amell

HENRY

The series’ male romantic lead, this handsome and well-built gent presents a seemingly open nature that belies a bit of a past.

My Casting Choice: Robbie Amell, best know for his role of Stephen Jameson on the short-lived The Tomorrow People, he has also appeared in True Jackson VP, Alcatraz and Revenge.

Gideon Emery

Gideon Emery

THE WIZARD

On the exterior, this 40something male is a charismatic and politically astute leader, earnest in his beliefs and intentions but also an “ends justify the means” sort. His showmanship however conceals a dangerous, and perhaps deadly, seriousness.

My Casting Choice: Gideon Emery is probably best known for playing Deucalion on Teen Wolf, but he has also had roles in the short-lived Last Resort, NCIS, True Blood, Moonlight, The Mentalist, Castle and Burn Notice. He has also lent his voice to countless video games such as Final Fantasy and Star Wars.

Jason Dohring

Jason Dohring

EAMONN

The Wizard’s right-hand man is unquestioningly loyal. A strong, silent type.

My Casting Choice: Jason Dohring, who is best known for his roles of Logan Echolls on Veronica Mars and Josef Kostan on Moonlight, has also appeared in episodes of Roswell, JAG, Judging Amy and Ringer.

Sammi Hanratty

Sammi Hanratty

TIP

All of 15 and harboring a secret past, this lass is undergoing the discomfort of discovering her sexuality.

My Casting Choice: Sammi Hanratty, best known for her roles of Young Chuck on Pushing Daisies and Jenny Gerhardt on The Unit, has also been seen in episodes of Mad Men, Rizzoli & Isles, Chosen and Salem.

Cody Christian

Cody Christian

JACK

Tip’s neighbor and closest friend, an adventurous and energetic teen.

My Casting Choice: Cody Christian has had a recurring role on Pretty Little Liars, playing Mike Montgomery, but he has also appeared in Lab Rats and Body of Proof.

Kevin Durand

Kevin Durand

OJO

A member of the Munja’kin, a primitive and isolated cross-pollinated culture, this stoic and fearsome man (mid-30s to early 40s) is rather unsympathetic to Dorothy’s plight.

My Casting Choice: Kevin Durand, who appeared as Joshua on Dark Angel and Martin Keamy on Lost, has also appeared in I Am Number Four, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Winter’s Tale.

Johnny Sequoyah

Johnny Sequoyah

SYLVIA

A “good mimic” is sought to play this odd, feral and haunted 10-year-old.

My Casting Choice: Johnny Sequoyah, who made her TV debut in the short-lived series Believe.

After reading the description of the show and the characters who will play in that world, what actors/actresses would you like to see star in Emerald City? Please share your thoughts.

Earlier this week the folks at FOX hosted a Girls Night Out at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (the organization behind the Emmy Awards) in North Hollywood, featuring guest panelists that included:

Jane Lynch (Glee)
Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)
Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project)
Liz Meriwether (Executive Producer and Creator of New Girl)
Heather Kadin (Executive Producer of Sleepy Hollow)
Yeardley Smith (The Simpsons)
Alex Borstein (Family Guy)

Moderated by Stacey Wilson from The Hollywood Reporter the event got underway with a video introduction from Cat Deeley, the host of So You Can Think You Can Dance, who was supposed to be part of the panel, but was unable to attend. The ladies were then introduced to the stage to rousing applause by the packed theatre with each panelist getting her chance in the spotlight.

Some of the highlights from the night included:

Jane Lynch

Jane Lynch

* Jane sharing that it is “shocking that (Glee) is coming to an end, but (we are going to make the end) uplifting”;

* When asked if there is something that Sue has not done yet that she would like to have her do, Jane responded that she will “let (the writers) present what Sue (does next) in their (own) warped imaginations”;

* Chelsea and co-star Andy Samberg actually went to grade school together in Oakland and crossing paths occasionally throughout their early days on the New York stand-up comic circuit;

Chelsea Peretti

Chelsea Peretti

* When asked how she balances acting with stand-up, Chelsea shared that “they (actually) complement each other”;

* Mindy, unlike many pundits, is actually proud of season 1 of The Mindy Project, in fact, she shared that “I stand behind that first season”;

* When asked what is her favorite part of the filming/writing experience on her show, Mindy shared that “I get to make out with a lot of good looking guys” so that’s a pretty great experience;

Mindy Kaling, Liz Meriwether and Heather Kadin

Mindy Kaling, Liz Meriwether and Heather Kadin

* Heather talked about her unusual Hollywood story, sharing that she knew no one in Hollywood when she arrived in the city, but she sent out letters to every production company she could and ended up working for Lynda Obst (the executive producer on the films Sleepless in Seattle and Contact) and then she segwayed into TV at ABC;

* In her down time, which is limited because of her work schedule on Sleepy Hollow and her busy home life with her two children, Heather enjoys watching “three episodes of Orange Is the New Black and drink a glass of wine”;

* Yeardley joked that her goal as a performer “was to rule the world” but that didn’t necessarily work out – or maybe it did because she got teased about her voice and now her voice is known the world over;

* She also shared that the folks behind The Simpsons were told in the beginning that their “cartoon” would not work because no animated series had succeeded since The Flintstones;

Yeardley Smith and Alex Borstein

Yeardley Smith and Alex Borstein

* Alex shared that Seth McFarlane is “one of the most frustrating people to work with”, but he has “finely tuned eyes and ears” when it comes to dialogue and illustration; and,

* Alex has been with FOX for 17 years, dating back to 1998 when she was brought in to participate in a pilot presentation.

To say the least with that many funny ladies on the stage, the panel was filled with a lot of laughs and ended far too soon; but the audience certainly was treated to a great, entertaining night.

Dido is taken to England by her father, Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode), to be raised by his uncle, the Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson), as an aristocratic Lady, as befits her blood line. On the grand estate of Kenwood House, Dido (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is raised in privilege alongside her cousin Elizabeth Murray (Sarah Gadon) and together they navigate the complex social hierarchies of the time. Dido meets John Davinier (Sam Reid), a young lawyer and apprentice of Lord Mansfield, and a rift grows between her and her protective guardian, who sees John as being beneath Dido. Yet John and Dido’s meeting is the beginning of a love story that catapults Dido onto a path of self-discovery, and forces Lord Mansfield, the Lord Chief Justice, to confront his own views on race, society and the antiquated laws of the time. The film also stars Tom Felton and Emily Watson.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Opens: May 2

Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) continues to struggle with balancing his life as a high school student, and his responsibilities as Spider-Man. The cast includes Emma Stone, Sally Field and Chris Copper.

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return

On Dorothy’s new journey through Oz, she meets new friends like a marshmallow man named Marshal Mallow (Hugh Dancy), a china doll princess (Megan Hilty), an ancient tree-turned-tugboat named Tugg (Patrick Stewart), and a large owl named Wiser (Oliver Platt). With the help of her new friends, they band together against a wicked Jester (Martin Short) who wants to control Oz by turning important people into marionettes. Also part of the vocal cast is Bernadette Peters as Glinda the Good Witch.

Godzilla

Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go there to find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two teenage finalists emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Bill Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team. The cast includes Lake Bell and Suraj Sharma.

Cold in July
Opens: May 23

Words and Pictures
Opens: May 23

English teacher Jack Marcus (Clive Owen) laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his time with drink versus the art of language. Then he meets his match in Dina Delsanto (Juliette Binoche), a painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. The two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish. Jack hatches a plan for galvanizing student interest in their studies: he declares a war between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter.
