CARRIE BEBRIS
The Deception at Lyme: Or, The Peril of Persuasion
Released on September 27, 2011

In Jane Austen’s Persuasion, the Cobb—Lyme’s famous seawall—proved dangerous to a careless young woman. Now it proves deadly. Following their recent intrigue at Highbury, Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth Darcy visit the seaside village of Lyme on holiday. Family business also draws them there, to receive the personal effects of Mr. Darcy’s late cousin, a naval lieutenant who died in action. Their retreat turns tragic when they come upon a body lying at the base of the Cobb. The victim is Mrs. Clay, a woman with a scandalous past that left her with child whose existence threatened the inheritance of one of her paramours and the reputation of another. Did she lose her balance and fall from the slippery breakwater, or was she pushed? Mrs. Clay’s death is not the only one that commands the Darcys’ attention. When Mr. Darcy discovers, among his cousin’s possessions, evidence that the young lieutenant’s death might have been murder, he allies with Captain Frederick Wentworth (hero of Jane Austen’s Persuasion) to probe details of a battle that took place across the sea but was influenced by a conspiracy much closer to home.

Wonder Women!

Thanks to an article at Pop Candy, the weekly column at USA Today written by Whitney Matheson, I recently learned about a documentary film that is (hopefully) going to be featured at the annual South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas next month.

That documentary is called Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines. A film that focuses on the history of the universe as told by Wonder Women – yes, plural! If you want a literal translation, the documentary film is all about female heroes (in the pop culture world and in real life).

Among the personalities included in the film, made by filmmakers Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and Kelcey Edwards, are Gloria Steinem, Lindsey Wagner and Lynda Carter [among others]. And, it is the ladies’ goal to raise the necessary funds to have the world premiere of Wonder Women! at South By Southwest – and that is where we can help out.

A Kickstarter fund is undergoing – with only 19 days remaining – to reach the goal of $15,000. Visit the link to find out how you can help and receive some fun incentives for your donation such as signed DVDs, T-shirts, toys and posters. The film is already done, the filmmakers now need to professionally sound mix and color grade the film as well as prepare a festival print – that is the reason for the Kickstarter fund.

To highlight more the documentary film, Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman from its birth in comic book form in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today. The film looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation.

You can learn more about the amazing team and those who were interviewed for the documentary film by visiting their website here.

You can also see the trailer for Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines here.

Here is the next list of modern-day writers who, in their own way, have paid homage to Jane Austen’s legendary stories. The first two authors listed below have written four books while the last author has written five books either inspired by Austen’s characters or based on the author herself.

They appear in alphabetical order:

None But You by Susan Kaye

SUSAN KAYE
None But You, (Frederick Wentworth, Captain: Book 1)
Released on January 31, 2007

Eight years ago, when he had nothing but his future to offer, Frederick Wentworth fell in love with Anne Elliot, the gentle daughter of a haughty, supercilious baronet. Sir Walter Elliot refused to countenance a marriage, and Anne’s godmother, Lady Russell, strongly advised Anne against him. Persuaded by those nearest to her, Anne had given him up and he had taken his broken heart to sea. When Jane Austen’s Persuasion opens in the year 1814, Frederick Wentworth, now a famous and wealthy captain in His Majesty’s Navy, finds himself back in England and, as fate would have it, residing as a guest in Anne’s former home. Now, it is the baronet who is in financial difficulties, and Anne exists only at her family’s beck and call. For eight long years, Frederick had steeled his heart against her. Should he allow Anne into his heart again, or should he look for love with younger, prettier woman in the neighborhood who regard him as a hero?

For You Alone by Susan Kaye

SUSAN KAYE
For You Alone (Frederick Wentworth, Captain; Book 2)
Released on October 15, 2008

How could he have failed to know himself so completely? Captain Frederick Wentworth, lately returned to England from a distinguished naval career fighting Napoleon, had re-visited the scene of his romantic defeat of eight years previous at the hands of Miss Anne Elliot to find his former love a pale, worn shadow of herself. Attracted by the lively young ladies in the area who regarded him as a hero, he had ignored Anne and entangled himself with Louisa Musgrove, a headstrong young woman who seemed all that Anne was not. Now, because of his careless behavior and Louisa’s heedlessness, his future appeared tied to her just at the moment when it had become painfully clear that Anne was still everything he truly wanted. In honor, he belonged to Louisa, but his heart was full of Anne. What was he to do?

Shadows in a Brillant Life by Susan Kaye

SUSAN KAYE
Shadows in a Brilliant Life
Released on July 1, 2011

This is a short story in which Captain Frederick Wentworth is not an honorable man, but a man looking to gratify his own selfish desires. When Anne Elliot sees that Louisa Musgrove is the object of Wentworth’s lust, she must try to stop him; and then when Louisa is out of danger, is Anne his new target?

When I Dream, I Have You

SUSAN KAYE
When I Dream, I Have You
Released on July 12, 2011

The success of Persuasion is predicated on the once engaged Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth meeting after a separation of nearly nine years. In this time, both have changed a great deal. She has learned that love is not as easily had as she thought when she was 19, and he has gotten the money and success he hungered after as a younger man. When they meet again, there is still much pride and misunderstanding to overcome before all is set to right. But what would happen if the second meeting were postponed by just a few months?
