Just Us Guys Graphic NEW

The folks over at 82893 Productions are moving forward with more projects. Namely, they are working on the first official season of Just Us Guys, a comedy/drama web series about Scott, a gay dad, who has a best friend relationship with his straight son, Max [think Gilmore Girls with guys] that is slated to consist of 13 episodes, each 10 minutes long, set for a March 2014 release as well as working on Elsie, a spin-off web series from Just Us Guys that is slated to consist of roughly 7 episodes, each set to be about 1 to 5 minutes long.

Just Us Guys, the prequel episodes, have been screened at the San Diego International Comic-Con Independent Film Festival this past July and at the first Salt Lack City (Utah) Comic-Con Film Festival in September. The Just Us Guys folks will also be participating in a panel at Bent-Con this coming Saturday, November 9 at PM.

You can learn more about Bent-Con here.

Currently, 82893 Productions has an Indiegogo Campaign ongoing to raise money for both Just Us Guys and Elsie but as well as for several worthy causes: Breast Cancer Awareness and It Gets Better.

There are still 11 days left in the current campaign and any donation will be welcome!

Just Us Guys

For the first time in all of the years I have been attending the San Diego Comic-Con (that would be 12 years in case you were wondering), I attended the independent film festival, which has been a juried event contained within the annual fete since 2005.

The four-day festival screens some of the very best in genre-related short and long films as part of Comic-Con. The festival’s categories include action/adventure, animation, comics-related, documentary (pop culture related), horror/suspense, humor, and science fiction/fantasy. The winners of each category are decided by a panel of judges made up of film and popular arts industry luminaries; this year that included actress Kathy Najimy, Entertainment Weekly columnist (and former LA Times writer) Geoff Boucher and filmmaker Alex DeMille.

Trophies and prizes are given to the films deemed by the judges to be the best in each category, and an overall “Judges’ Choice Award”, which is presented to the one film considered the best film in the festival.

I attended a portion of the festival in support of my friend Chris Lilly’s online series “Just Us Guys” that was selected to be part of the top 50 films selected from among the 300 plus films that were submitted for the festival. That is quite a feat, in and of itself,

After the initial screening of “Just Us Guys” during the festival, Chris took to the stage along with his film editor Clinton Steeds (That’s So Raven and Cory in the House) and writing consultant Mark Litton (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) to participate in a moderator Q&A.

Chris was first asked what the genesis of “Just Us Guys” was with his reveal being that he wrote a horror script similar to that of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer back in 2009; and then he ended up writing a pilot that was Gilmore Girls but with guys inspired, which is what eventually became “Just Us Guys”.

When talking about what viewers of the online series can expect next, Chris shared that he is working on how to tell the full 13 ten-minute episodes for season two of “Just Us Guys” that will be more comedic and more father-son-based. And, he also shared that Elsie (played by Phylicia Goings) – who is the dynamic new comic book store employee – is actually being prepped as a spin-off series.

Mark and Chris then shared how they came to know each other, and it was through the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which was the show that changed Chris’s life, making him want to work in the industry. In fact, Chris named his production company – 82893 Productions – after the date that changed his life.

When the awards ceremony was presented on the last day of the convention, “Just Us Guys” was – unfortunately – not among the winners of the categories listed above, but when asked how he felt about the results, Chris was positive, sharing that he was already a winner by having his online series selected as part of the festival, getting great exposure and having the opportunity to network with everyone who participated in the Independent Film Festival.

Additions to the cast of the proposed web series Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths will certainly make TV fans sit up and take notice.

Who are the new cast members, you ask?

None other than actor Kristoffer Polaha – best known for his recent work on Ringer and Life Unexpected – as well as actress Tamara Taylor, who has been appearing on Bones since its second season way back in 2006.

RINGER

Kristoffer will play the character Alex, an intelligent, handsome man who is incredibly supportive of his long-term, live-in girlfriend, Penelope (Lesley Fera). He is a psychology professor who finds himself taking on the role of big brother for Penelope’s friends—in particular Kate (Patricia Steffy), as she stumbles her way into re-entering the dating world after a lengthy relationship (no small feat given that Los Angeles is where dating comes to die). Alex is often the voice of reason, but finds himself in the frustrating position of having to defend modern dating customs even though he doesn’t practice them himself.

Tamara

Meanwhile, Tamara will play Sadie, a waitress/wannabe celebrity, who has a certain moral flexibility and is very matter of fact about what (and who) she wants in life. The fact that she has passed the optimal ‘It Girl’ age has not put a damper on her enthusiasm for the task. She finds Kate’s reluctance to join the Los Angeles social scene puzzling and her attitudes toward sex archaic — and isn’t afraid to tell her just that.

Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths

Web series are all the rage lately; and another great, new female-themed web series is bound to be the talk of the internet this coming summer.

The popular blog Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths [which can be found here] from writer/producer Patricia Steffy is hoping to debut this summer, but the folks behind this production need your help. They have started an IndieGogo crowd-funding campaign page to raise financing for this project that will consist of ten episodes in its first season.

Here is the general premise behind Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths:

Kate Holt (to be played by Steffy) is lost. While Kate is an educated, successful business woman, she finds herself stymied when it comes to navigating the seemingly endless set of pitfalls inherent to the dating scene in Los Angeles. After all, no one comes to Los Angeles to find love—people here barely find like. Songs of found love are written about San Francisco or New York, not Los Angeles for a very good reason: L.A. is where dating comes to die.

Perhaps she has spent too much time wandering through literary realities, but as Kate begins her journey, she fervently longs for more formal times where intentions were declared before fluids were exchanged. And she would very much like to understand why a sane person, who would never pick up a hitchhiker, does not think twice about going home with a stranger met in a bar.

But these are the scenarios Kate is thrust into upon receiving an email from The EX proclaiming his joy at becoming engaged to someone he has known but briefly—a fact particularly difficult for Kate to reconcile given the decade she spent dating him.

Dating in L.A. and Other Urban Myths will follow Kate as she tries to accept the advice of her friends: she will now have to date in L.A. despite the reality that she is not 21, not a supermodel, and can’t comprehend why anyone thinks anal bleaching is good idea.

The cast of this new web series will also include actress Lesley Fera, best known for her recurring role of Veronica Hastings on the popular ABC Family drama Pretty Little Liars, as Penelope, a “no nonsense” type who thinks the world would be better off with less therapy and more common sense; and General Hospital star Jen Lilley, who will play Chloe, a wholesome, unintentional self-saboteur with a flair for both the dramatic and the romantic.

All funds raised through the Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths campaign will go towards paying for the first season (10 episodes) of the web series. This is, obviously, a passion project, being produced by independent artists who need your support to make it a reality.

If $10,000 is raised, the production team will be able to film an expanded pilot episode of the web series;

If $40,000 is raised, they can film some version (perhaps shorter) of the first season of the series;

But if $85,000 is raised, they will be able to film the entire 10 episodes with their fabulous actors and crew.

So, every penny counts and you can make a big difference for this unique production!

There are, of course, incentives for whatever donation each person can make. You can learn more about those by visiting the Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths IndieGogo fund-raising page here.

You can also help spread the word about Dating in LA and Other Urban Myths by spreading the word using IndieGogo share tools as well as following the production on Twitter at @datinglaseries and on Tumblr here.

NOTE: Please be on the look-out for updates on this new production, including casting announcements and a great fan-oriented contest coming soon.

Hemlock Grove

On April 19, the entire 13-episode new Netflix series called Hemlock Grove will debut online today

This online series is a gripping tale of murder, mystery and monsters set in a ravaged Pennsylvania steel town that starts with the body of a young girl, mangled and murdered in the shadow of the former Godfrey steel mill. Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a biotech facility owned by the former steel magnates. Others believe the killer could be Peter, a 17-year-old Gypsy kid (Landon Liboiron from Terra Nova) from the wrong side of the tracks, who tells his classmates he’s a werewolf. Or it could be Roman (Bill Skarsgard, brother of Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood), the arrogant Godfrey scion, whose sister Shelley is disturbingly deformed and whose mother, Olivia (Famke Janssen from the X-Men franchise), the otherworldly beautiful and controlling grand dame of Hemlock Grove.

Here is a trailer for Hemlock Grove.
