At the start of San Diego Comic Con for the last five years, Her Universe, the company that is bringing more fannish fashion to the masses, puts on a show for Haute Couture designs with flare and plenty of effort.
This year, 24 designs walked down the runway, full of whim and flare. Feathers, sequins, transformative reveals and more than one gender-bend interpretation filled the evening that saw fans of all genres voting on one winner with two others chosen by a team of talented judges. Winners are set to design fashions for the line based on the next Avengers film.
What’s great about this show – besides looking at how well designers are able to render something high concept with a geek spin – is that the audience can watch as people passionate about fandom make inspired costumes without being cosplay. The reveals and dramatic turns make for a great few hours, and the models (who are sometimes the designers themselves) have a great time walking the runway.
Each designer is truly inspired by a film or TV show to create a look that speaks to the show without looking like it was made for the movie.
The winners, especially, are able to capture the spirit of their fandom in a way that makes you go, “Oh yes! I get that reference.”
But what made this show different from the one I attended last year was a surprise guest. Her Universe had copies of some of their new Doctor Who fashions at the con (the feature is the Thirteenth Doctor’s first costume – trench, tee and pants). Jodie Whittacker, after being part of the panel for the show that morning came out to walk the runway in her signature trench, before talking about being the first female doctor and how there are ways to look at the role as being universal.
The trench and opening outfit can be worn by both genders without question. (At Gallifrey One this February there were already a number of men and women in outfits like the Thirteenth’s new one.)
Jodie took time to tease a few things of the new season, even as her showrunner, Chris Chibnall, looked on and recorded her.
Check out the winning looks below as well as Jodie with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckhart.
Comic Con 2018 has come to an end and while the final day of the annual fete tends to be a lighter day in terms of panel programmed there were still some interesting TV shows on tap. And, I’ve included a whole slew of pictures of cosplayers further below.

Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now, EZ must carve out his new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp.

Legion: Ben Travers, John Cameron, Jeph Loeb, Nathaniel Halpern, Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, Jeremie Harris and Navid Negahban [Photo Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty Image/Zimbio]
A 15 minute recap of the previous season aired before the panelists took to the stage where they revealed that when it comes to the show’s future they know almost nothing. In fact, writer and producer Nathaniel Halpern stated a flat “no” when asked if he could reveal anything about next year. When asked for his own perspective on where the show goes next, Dan Stevens said this: “I know that Lenny is obviously gonna have a part to play in it. We’re off together in some form. Syd’s a bit mad. But I don’t know very much at this stage.” [Don Kaye and Matthew Jackson at Syfy Wire]
OTHER TV TRAILERS
Roswell, New Mexico (The CW)
This reboot is focused on Roswell, New Mexico, ground zero for those who seek proof that aliens exist. Roswell native Liz Ortecho left it all behind 10 years ago, after the death of her beloved older sister, Rosa. But with her father ailing, she reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown to move back in with him. When Liz arrives, she reconnects with Max Evans, her teenage crush who is now a Roswell police officer. Their chemistry is instantly electric. But Liz soon discovers a shocking truth: Max is an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life, along with those of his otherworldly siblings, Isobel and Michael. As the two grow closer after a decade apart, Liz finds it difficult to keep the truth from her best friend, Maria De Luca, and her trusting high school ex, Dr. Kyle Valenti. Also hiding their extraterrestrial origins are Isobel and Michael, with Isobel not even revealing the truth to her husband, Noah, and Michael keeping his identity hidden beneath a bad-boy exterior of hard living and casual hookups. Meanwhile, a long-standing government conspiracy spearheaded by Master Sgt. Jesse Manes, along with the politics of fear and hatred that run rampant in Roswell, threatens to expose Max and his family, and could endanger his deepening romance with Liz as well as their lives.

Roz had the opportunity today to interview Sarah Kuhn, author of the Heroine books starring Asian American superheroines. She also wrote the romantic comedy novella One Con Glory, which is in development as a feature film. That full article will be published in a few weeks.
And, be on the look-out for other reports from Roz from her time at San Diego Comic Con 2018 very soon.

Loosely translated from his native language, his name means “he who devours your entrails and thoroughly enjoys it.” As a teenager, he single-handedly slaughtered his entire civilization, becoming the last of his race. Now the mercenary roams the universe on his motorcycle, getting paid for what he loves most: murder and mayhem. (Denise Petski at Deadline)
Manifest (NBC)

When Montego Air Flight 828 landed safely after a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers were relieved. Yet in the span of those few hours, the world had aged five years and their friends, families and colleagues, after mourning their loss, had given up hope and moved on. Now, faced with the impossible, they’re all given a second chance. But as their new realities become clear, a deeper mystery unfolds and some of the returned passengers soon realize they may be meant for something greater than they ever thought possible.
Legacies (The CW)
The spin-off series of The Originals tells the story of the next generation of supernatural beings at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. It’s here that Klaus Mikaelson’s daughter, 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson; Alaric Saltzman’s twins, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman; and other young adults – including political scion MG and the mysterious Landon Kirby – come of age in the most unconventional way possible, nurtured to be their best selves… in spite of their worst impulses. Will these young witches, vampires and werewolves become the heroes they want to be – or the villains they were born to be? As they fight to protect their secret, their town of Mystic Falls and eventually the world, they will have to rely on ancient folklore and tales to learn how to battle their far-reaching enemies.

In season two, a new, seemingly benign element presents itself. A company has bought the town’s old hotel and is going to renovate it to make Midnight a tourist destination. After becoming temporarily possessed last season, Manfred is still feeling the lingering effects in a surprising way. Olivia and Lem’s marriage is off to a sexy start because now that she’s shared his blood, there’s a psychic bond between them. Fiji and Bobo, they new lovebirds, have clearly been practicing and have a strange side effect of her magic: when they make love, they float. Joe (the Angel) meets the demon-hunting gay cowboy Walker, who may turn that angel’s head. And, a banshee will be hitting town and there might be some pint-sized Midnighters in town too. Set in a dark, comic book world against the backdrop of late 1980’s counter culture, the series follows a homeless teen recruited into a storied elite private school where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital.

Chris Pine quashed any hopes that he’d reveal how his character could still be alive for the sequel when it had appeared that he’d met his death. “It’s something I’m super excited for everybody to see,” said Director Patty Jenkins. “[Chris] is a very important part of our movie.” There was footage shown during the panel – but not made available [as yet] online – that showed Wonder Woman flying into a mall and rescuing a young girl while taking out some gun-toting thugs. The Roz Report
The highlights for Roz included the press for NBC’s new show Manifest, which Josh Dallas described as Lost meets This is Us.

When a young girl, Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney from Fences and Hidden Figures) is chosen to be a test subject, Federal Agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar from Pitch) is the man who is tasked with bringing her to Project Noah. Ultimately, however, Wolgast becomes her surrogate father, as he tries to protect her at any cost.

Here is what Roz had to report about what happened to her or what she witnessed today at Comic Con 2018 Day Two:
It was a fun day of awkward stories that finally got to some of the Hollywood double standards at the EW’s Brave Warriors panel, especially when Tom Ellis revealed a less than ideal situation in a sex scene.
Biggest highlight, though, was running into someone from the show that started me coming to Comic Con! Francis Capra, Weevil, is always a treat to see!
