January has come and gone so quickly, hasn’t it? With the start of the new year, there are plenty of dramas that either returned or new shows that debuted as well as plenty of made-for-TV movies and mini-series to watch. Let’s take a look at how these programming options for the last month of the year fared in the ratings.

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

Hit the Floor – The VH1 series returned for the start of its third season on January 18, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 18 – 1.7 million (Season Premiere)
January 25 – 1.5 million

This averages out to 1.6 million viewers for January. A new episode of Hit the Floor aired on February 1 with the next new episode set to air on VH1 on Monday, February 8 at 10 PM.

The Fosters – The family drama returned for the remainder of its third season on Freeform (the new name for ABC Family) starting on January 25, earning 1 million viewers. A new episode of The Fosters aired on February 1 with the next new episode set to air on Freeform on Monday, February 8 at 8 PM.

Recovery Road – The new drama dealing with addiction debuted on Freeform (the new name for ABC Family) on January 25, earning 458,000 viewers. A new episode aired on February 1 with the next new episodes of Recovery Road set to air on Freeform on Monday, February 8 at 9 PM.

The Magicians – The new Syfy drama aired two back-to-back episodes on January 25, earning 1.1 million viewers for both hours. A new episode of The Magicians aired on Syfy on February 1 with the next new episode of The Magicians set to air on Syfy on Monday, February 8 at 8 PM.

War and Peace – The 4-part mini-series that simultaneously aired on the History Channel, A&E and Lifetime debuted on January 18, airing two episodes during the month. The combined average ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 18 – 547,000 viewers (Debut)
January 25 – 479,000 viewers

This averages out to 513,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on the three networks on February 1 with the final airing of War and Peace on the History Channel, A&E and Lifetime on Monday, February 8 at 9 PM.

TUESDAYS:

NOTE: Both Finding Carter (on MTV) and Manhattan (on WGN America) have been canceled by their respective networks.

Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce – The Bravo drama aired four new episodes of its current, second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 5 – 601,000 viewers
January 12 – 762,000 viewers
January 19 – 659,000 viewers
January 26 – 740,000 viewers

This averages out to 691,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce will air on Bravo on Tuesday, February 9 at 10 PM.

The Expanse – The Syfy mini-series aired four episodes in January and its final two hours at the beginning of February. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 5 – 631,000 viewers
January 12 – 713,000 viewers
January 19 – 502,000 viewers
January 26 – 721,000 viewers
February 2 – 555,000 viewers (Two-Hour Season Finale)

This averages out to 520,000 viewers for January. Syfy renewed The Expanse for a second season.

The Haves and the Have Nots – The OWN soap opera returned for its current, second season on January 5, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 5 – 3.1 million (Mid-Season Return)
January 12 – 2.7 million
January 19 – 2.9 million
January 26 – 3 million

This averages out to 2.9 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of The Haves and Have Nots will air on OWN on Tuesday, February 9 at 9 PM.

Teen Wolf – The mid-season return of the fifth season of the MTV thriller aired on January 5. The show aired four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 5 – 1.1 million (Mid-Season Return)
January 12 – 930,000 viewers
January 19 – 906,000 viewers
January 26 – 916,000 viewers

This averages out to 963,000 viewers for January. A new episode of aired on February 2 with the next new episode of Teen Wolf set to air on MTV on Tuesday, February 9 at 9 PM.

The Shannara Chronicles – The new MTV fantasy drama aired its two-hour debut on January 5, airing 5 hours during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 5 – 1 million (Two Hour Series Debut)
January 12 – 919,000 viewers
January 19 – 751,000 viewers
January 26 – 1 million

This averages out to 734,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of The Shannara Chronicles set to air on MTV on Tuesday, February 9 at 10 PM.

Pretty Little Liars – The premiere of the long-running Freeform (formerly ABC Family) soap opera aired on January 12 with three episodes airing during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 12 – 2.2 million (Season Premiere)
January 19 – 1.7 million
January 26 – 1.6 million

This averages out to 1.8 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of Pretty Little Liars set to air on Freeform on Tuesday, February 9 at 8 PM.

Shadowhunters – The new Freeform (formerly ABC Family) fantasy series debuted on January 12, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 12 – 1.8 million (Series Debut)
January 19 – 1 million
January 26 – 975,000 viewers

This averages out to 1.3 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of Shadowhunters set to air on Freeform on Tuesday, February 9 at 9 PM.

Outsiders – The WGN America series debuted on January 26, earning 1.1 million viewers. A new episode aired on February 2 with the next new episode of Outsiders set to air on WGN America on Tuesday, February 9.

WEDNESDAYS:

American Horror Story: Hotel – The final two episodes of the FX anthology series fifth season aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 6 – 1.8 million
January 13 – 2.2 million (Season Finale)

This average out to 2 million viewers for January. A sixth season of American Horror Story will air on FX later in the year.

Suits – The long-running USA Network legal drama returned for the remaining episodes of its fifth season on January 27, earning 1.7 million viewers. A new episode aired on February 3 with the next new episode set to air on USA Network on Wednesday, February 10 at 10 PM.

THURSDAYS:

Colony – The new USA Network futuristic series debuted on January 14, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 14 – 1.4 million (Series Debut)
January 21 – 1.3 million
January 28 – 1.2 million

This averages out to 1.3 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 4 with the next new episode of Colony set to air on the USA Network on Thursday, January 11 at 10 PM. The show has also already received a second season order from the USA Network.

London Spy – The 5-part BBC America mini-series debuted on January 21 with two episodes airing during the month, but ratings could not be tracked down for either episode. A new episode of the mini-series aired on February 4 with a new episode set to air on BBC America on February 11.

FRIDAYS:

Unforgettable – The final eight episodes of the former CBS series that was picked up by A&E aired during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 1 – 736,000 viewers
January 8 – 609,000 viewers
January 15 – 705,000 viewers
January 15 – 652,000 viewers
January 22 – 839,000 viewers
January 22 – 662,000 viewers
January 22 – 551,000 viewers
January 22 – 485,000 viewers (Finale)

This average out to 655,000 viewers for January. A decision has yet to be made by A&E as to whether Unforgettable will get a fifth season order or not.

Sherlock – A special two-hour movie of the popular BBC series Sherlock aired on PBS on New Year’s Day, but ratings for that special could not be tracked down.

SATURDAYS:

Black Sails – The Starz pirate-themed drama returned for its third season on January 23, airing two episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 23 – 843,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 30 – 759,000 viewers

This averages out to 801,000 viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode of Black Sails set to air on Starz on Saturday, February 13 at 9 PM.

Beowulf – The new Esquire Network period piece drama debuted on January 23, airing two episode during the month; but ratings could not be tracked down for either episode. A new episode aired on February 6 with the next new episode set to air on the Esquire Network on Saturday, February 13 at 10 PM.

SUNDAYS:

The Royals – The controversial E! series aired the final three episodes of its second season during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 3 – 824,000 viewers
January 10 – 814,000 viewers
January 17 – 848,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 829,000 viewers for January. E! network has renewed The Royals for a third season that will air later this year.

Billions – The new Showtime drama debuted on January 17, airing three episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

January 17 – 904,000 viewers (Series Debut)
January 24 – 950,000 viewers
January 31 – 1.3 million

This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of Billions set to air on Showtime on Sunday, February 14 at 10 PM.

Downton Abbey – The final season of the international hit series aired on January 3, airing four episodes during the month, but ratings could not be tracked down for those episodes. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of Downton Abbey set to air on PBS on Sunday, February 14 at 9 PM.

Mercy Street – The new PBS mini-series debuted on January 17, airing two episodes during the month, but ratings could not be tracked down for either airing. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of Mercy Street set to air on PBS on Sunday, February 14 at 10 PM.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES

Once again, there were nearly two dozen made-for-TV movies and/or mini-series that aired on the cable networks during January. The following were the movies where ratings could be found:

Grease Live (FOX) – 12.2 million (average over 3 hour airing)
Toni Braxon: Unbreak My Heart (Lifetime) – 3.6 million
Love in Paradise (Hallmark) – 3.1 million
