Fall TV Ratings: Cable Series

As we are now a month into the new fall TV season, I have been reporting on the ratings every day for the dramas on the major networks, but now it is time to focus on the cable series. While there are currently not as many cable shows on the air in comparison to the major networks, there are still a handful of shows to follow.

Here are the month-long results for those shows:

Sons of Anarchy – The series has aired 6 episodes since its return on September 7, garnering an audience of 4.1 million, 3.4 million, 3.5 million, 3 million, 3.1 million and 2.9 million for its 6 airings; giving it an average of 3.3 million viewers over the course of its run so far. A new episode will air this coming Tuesday at 10 PM.

Terriers – The new FX series has also aired 6 episodes since its debut on September 8; but it has not performed as well in the ratings, receiving less than 1 million viewers every week except for its premiere, which garnered 1.6 million viewers. The show’s average viewership is currently at 783,000 viewers. A new episode will air this coming Wednesday at 10 PM.

Boardwalk Empire – The new HBO series hit big in the ratings on its premiere night on September 19, hitting 7.1 million viewers; but in the subsequent three weeks that have followed it reached 3.3 million, 4.8 million and 2.6 million. The show’s average is 4.5 million viewers.

NOTE: A new episode of Boardwalk Empire aired tonight (October 17), but those numbers won’t be available for several days after that airing.

Dexter – The show has aired for three weeks, getting viewership of 1.8 million, 1.7 million and 1.9 million for those three weeks. The show’s average is 1.8 million viewers.

NOTE: Again, a new episode of Dexter aired tonight (October 17), and those ratings will be available a few days after that airing.

Stargate Universe – The show has only been back for two weeks, garnering 1.2 million viewers for both airings. A new episode will air this Tuesday at 9 PM.

Caprica – Much like its Tuesday night companion, Stargate Universe, Caprica has only aired two episodes with less than stellar ratings results. Each night has garnered less than 1 million viewers; in fact, the return episode garnering under 900,000 viewers with the second airing dropping down to about 840,000 viewers. A new episode will air this Tuesday at 10 PM.

Sanctuary – The show just returned with its season premiere airing this past Friday (October 15). The ratings results for that airing should be available in a few days.

Summer Ratings

While it is clearly no longer summer, as evidenced by the fact we have entered the fourth week of the fall TV season, there are still a few summer series that are just now completing their summer runs. With that thought in mind, and the fact that I actually keep track of ratings throughout the entire year, I have compiled an overall average of the 27 summer shows that aired on the cable networks (more on the major network shows below) over the summer and leading into the middle of October.

Most bloggers and critics will tell you that only the 18 to 34 demographic numbers from the ratings system is what is followed by the networks, the studios and the industry as a whole, but I whole-heartedly disagree. I honestly believe that the overall ratings received by every show are just as important simply because the median age of viewers is approximately 54 years old.

But before I digress into an examination of the ratings system and demographics, the following list consists of the overall viewers for all 27 summer shows from the cable networks. Please keep in mind that this list is not based on any kind of scientific data just a simple average of viewers. Please also note that not all summer shows aired the same amount of episodes; some aired as few as 9 or as many as 18 so the averages are not exact; but I have stipulated how many episodes each series aired:

The Closer – 7.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Rizzoli & Isles – 6.9 million (aired 10 episodes)
Burn Notice – 5.7 million (aired 12 episodes)
Royal Pains – 5.4 million (aired 12 episodes)
Covert Affairs – 5.2 million (aired 11 episodes)
True Blood – 5 million (aired 12 episodes)
White Collar – 4.3 million (aired 9 episodes)
Psych – 3.6 million (aired 9 episodes)
Memphis Beat – 3.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
In Plain Sight – 3.4 million (aired 13 episodes)
Leverage – 3.3 million (aired 13 episodes)
Army Wives – 3.3 million (aired 18 episodes)
The Glades – 3.1 million (aired 13 episodes)
Hawthorne – 3.1 million (aired 10 episodes)
The Secret Life of the American Teenager – 2.9 million (aired 14 episodes)
Pretty Little Liars – 2.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
Drop Dead Diva – 2.6 million (aired 13 episodes)
Warehouse 13 – 2.5 million (aired 12 episodes)
Eureka – 2.4 million (aired 9 episodes)
Mad Men – 2.3 million (aired 13 episodes) *
Dark Blue – 2.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Haven – 1.8 million (aired 13 episodes)
Huge – 1.7 million (aired 10 episodes)
Make It or Break It – 1.6 million (aired 10 episodes)
Rescue Me – 1.3 million (aired 10 episodes)
Unnatural History – 1.2 million (aired 13 episodes)
Rubicon – 1 million (aired 13 episodes) *

* These two series (Rubicon and Mad Men) will air their finales on October 17 so averages of their overall ratings were used in lieu of the ratings for the last two episodes.

The only summer series, thus far, to be canceled is the ABC Family Channel show Huge.

As for the summer shows on the major networks, a list was compiled by Entertainment Weekly of the most watched shows, including the following:

Lie to Me – 7.3 million
Rookie Blue – 7.2 million
Flashpoint – 7 million
Miami Medical – 6.5 million
The Good Guys – 4.6 million
Friday Night Lights – 4.1 million
Scoundrels – 3.8 million
The Gates – 3.8 million
Persons Unknown – 2.8 million

Of the above shows, Persons Unknown, Scoundrels and Miami Medical were not renewed. It is also more likely than not that the series The Gates will not be back. Lie to Me returned with new episodes three weeks after its summer run because of the unexpected cancellation of new drama Lone Star. The Good Guys was also back with new episodes fairly quickly while Rookie Blue was renewed for a second season after only a few episodes were aired.  Friday Night Lights will be back on DirecTV on October 27 and on NBC next year while Flashpoint should return next summer.

Fall TV Week Four: Sunday Ratings

The end of the third week of the fall TV season finished last night and since there are a lot of sports, animated shows and reality that air on Sunday nights, there are only two dramas to report on in terms of ratings. They follow:

Desperate Housewives (ABC)- 12.2 million

10 PM Shows:
Brothers & Sisters (ABC) – 9 million
CSI: Miami (CBS) – 11.9 million

Television Tidbits

The following list showcases a number of television tidbits that have arisen over the last couple of weeks:

1. It does not look like ABC will be renewing its summer series The Gates especially since there has been no news – whatsoever – from the network about the future (or lack thereof) of the show.

2. CBS has been touting their new series (and reboot of the classic) Hawaii Five-0 as the number one new show of the fall season since right after the pilot aired. The ratings certainly seem to reflect that theory. The network also has the second most watched new show of the fall season: Blue Bloods

3. So far this season (all three weeks of it), the FOX series Lone Star has been canceled and the new ABC series My Generation has been canceled as well. The new NBC series Outlaw has not been officially canceled, but production on the show has been halted, making it – more than likely – the next show to be pulled from the primetime landscape.

4. The outlook for several other new fall shows, including Chase and Undercovers on NBC and The Whole Truth on ABC are less than optimistic. Any of these shows could easily be the next one to go.

5. The returning shows that are currently in jeopardy of not being renewed include Fringe and The Good Guys on FOX, Parenthood and Chuck on NBC and Medium on CBS. While it is too soon to tell if the networks will, indeed, pull the plug on any of these shows, but the numbers are not very positive. Of course, Fringe and Chuck have received low ratings in past seasons but have both been renewed, but that luck could change this time around.

6. A number of bloggers and critics are touting the new AMC series Rubicon as the best new show that no one is watching. The ratings certainly reflect that the show is not performing well; and despite a terrific cast and an interesting premise, Rubicon is an extremely slow moving series. With only two more episodes to air I can’t imagine the action getting any better.

7. The REAL best new show of the season that no one is watching (at least in my estimation) is the FX series Terriers, which – yes – has a terrible name that doesn’t fully reflect the premise of the show. The show is actually very compelling and gripping to watch. It airs Wednesdays at 10 PM and is worth a look if you haven’t seen it yet.

8. Two returning shows – Castle on ABC and Glee on FOX – have experienced even higher ratings this season than last. In fact, both shows have been in the top 30 shows for all three weeks of the fall season.

9. Syfy has decided to air both of their shows Stargate Universe and Caprica on Tuesday nights with Sanctuary the only show returning to Friday nights. However, the ratings for the latter two shows on their new night are very low compared to their previous numbers. It would seem to make sense for the network to move SGU and Caprica back to Friday nights, having a 3-hour block of programming, but perhaps that just isn’t feasible for the network.

10. Nearly all of the new shows this season have seen drops in their ratings over the past three weeks. These shows include The Event and Law & Order: Los Angeles on NBC; The Defenders on CBS and No Ordinary Family on ABC. Of these four shows, The Event has experienced the worst viewer fall out.

11. Remarkably, the two new shows on the CW – Hellcats and Nikita – are both holding their own with decent ratings. Hellcats is averaging 2.3 million viewers with Nikita averaging 3 million viewers. Since this network does not air in as many markets as the major networks, these averages are on course with the averages for their hit shows The Vampire Diaries, Smallville and Supernatural.
