Ratings: Fall TV (Sunday, October 10)

New York Comic Con 2021

New York Comic Con 2021 was held this weekend with both in-person and virtual panels. TV was represented by many different shows, ranging from superheroes to sci-fi to fantasy to thriller to time travel to apocalyptic to comedy.

The following is only a sampling of the panels that took place over the last few days.

SUPERGIRL

Melissa Benoist participated in a virtual panel for Supergirl and she shared the following:

“I don’t think I truly realized what I was signing up for, so my expectations…my mind was blown right from the start. It was one of the hardest, most challenging experiences of my life, and I think it will remain that for the rest of my life. I hope that (Supergirl) always and forever…shows fans and young women in particular how to be true to yourself and not be afraid to speak up and to empower the people you love around you and really embrace community.”

With the show now wrapped, the two-hour series finale of Supergirl will air on The CW on November 9, Benoist is busy with her 1-year-old child and a new project through her Three Things production banner based on the young adult novel series ‘Haven’s Secret.’

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA RETROSPECTIVE with EDWARD JAMES OLMOS AND MARY MCDONNELL

“So say we all!”

Edward James Olmost and Mary McDonnell appeared in person for this retrospective on the reboot of the 1970’s series that debuted as a mini-series back in 2003.

Both actors were “a bit dubious about the reboot (at first), but after reading the script, (they) both were sold.” They both remembered the dearly departed Richard Hatch, who starred in the original series and came back to play Tom Zarek in the reboot. They shared that Hatch was dubious as well, but became a huge defender of it once it began.

Among the other things they shared during their time on stage was:

* Series creator Ronald D. Moore told McDonnell her character, Laura Roslin, would live to see Earth at the end (of the show) and then die soon after;
* They didn’t know who the famous “final five” Cylons were until they got the scripts for those episodes, and they shared that even some of the actors who ended up playing those Cylons didn’t know;
* McDonnell shared that her most emblematic comment as Roslin was in season 4 when Adama was being threatened. She uttered the line, “I’m coming for all of you” over the comms, and that made McDonnell realize that Roslin was a powerhouse of rage and loss; and,
* Olmos shared that the most difficult scene for him was when Adama put the ring on Roslin’s finger after her death. “It was the last thing we shot together, and it ended up becoming the truth of what life is, the cycle.” And, he shared that he “was very fortunate to part” of the show.

You can rewatch Battlestar Galactica on Peacock, and a revival of the show is in the works for Peacock as well.

THE EXPANSE

The sixth and final season of the sci-fi drama that went from Syfy to Amazon Prime Video was at the con virtually with most of the cast and the producers in attendance. There will be plenty of pedal-to-the-metal excitement, as each episode will roll out “old-school style” – one episode per week.

There will be plenty of tension, guilt and worry on the Rocif with the “not-so-welcome” Clarissa (aka Peaches) in Alex’s (who died last season) stead; tension between Naomi and Amos; Holden still has the weight of the universe on his shoulders; and Avasarala is back heading the UN, trying to save the universe.

The Expanse is back one last time on December 10 on Amazon.

THE WHEEL OF TIME

The cast and creator were there virtually to talk about the debut of the fantasy series. Creator Rafe Judkins shared that this show “will be different from other fantasy TV series out there. It’s the book’s connection to Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism philosophy that makes (it) stand out. It’s not really about defeating evil, it’s about restoring balance to the world. And at a time like this in the world, he feels finding balance is super relevant right now.”

For lead star Rosamund Pike, she shared that “she is a big reader of fantasy, and was intrigued that the central character who gets to change these people’s lives is a woman.

The sets and costumes were described by some of the cast members as “grand scale,” and there was even some speculation on season two before the show even debuts.

THE BOYS

Cast members Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Chase Crawford and Karen Fukuhara took to the stage in New York to talk about the first two seasons of the superhero series, as they didn’t share much about the upcoming third season.

As you can imagine, the conversation included talk about their super suits, with Antony sharing that Homelander’s getup is among one of the most intense ensembles, stating, “My suit’s a nightmare.” And, Erin teased that Nathan Mitchell (who plays Black Noir) fell asleep in his suit, which covers him head-to-toe, he was “fully 100% asleep, caught on camera.” Jack and Karen shared that while they don’t have super suits, they’re “always covered in blood.”

Some other behind the scenes items were:
* Helen Mirren almost provided the voice over for The Deep’s gills (but that eventually went to Patton Oswalt);
* “We are children on set,” the cast admitted; and,
* Chase joked the Fresca obsession is “still a secret…we don’t know.”

The third season of The Boys will air on Amazon Prime Video, but an official date has yet to be set.

EVIL

It was another virtual panel for the CBS thriller series that has since moved over to Paramount+. While the season two finale aired on Sunday night, fans can be happy to know that the show will be back for a third season.

The main cast and executive producers were on tap for the panel with co-creator Robert King sharing that the discussions throughout the series between Kristen and David are the “heartbeat” of the series.

Each cast member shared something:
* Katja Herbers shared she enjoyed Kristen unraveling in season two; she’s “always really happy” when a new script comes in;
* Mike Colter shared that he’s “drawn to his character because he’s very far from (who he is) himself, especially when it comes to religion; and,
* Michael Emerson shared that Leland “relishes his work, and he likes the expressions on people’s faces when his sickness goes down; I’m not working so hard at comedy, but I’m grateful it’s there.”

OUTLANDER

The time travel drama was on the stage with Sam Heughan, author Diana Gabaldon and EP Maril Davis appearing in person while cast members Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Lauren Lyle, Cesar Domboy and John Bell were there virtually.

Season 6 will focus on Claire and her beloved Jamie’s attempts to settle in peace and thrive in colonial America – not an easy task, on highlands or in North Carolina. You can see the teaser trailer in the link below:

‘Outlander’ Reveals Season 6 Teaser Trailer Ahead Of 2022 Debut – New York Comic Con

The upcoming season will feature a 90-minute premiere episode and overall consists of 8 episodes. Production on Season 7 will start soon, consisting of 16 episodes.

Outlander will be back with season 6 in early 2022.

PSYCH 3: THIS IS GUS

HANNA

Season 3 of Hanna will consist of 6 episodes and will premiere on Amazon Prime on November 24.

THE CW’S 4400

Based on the USA Network series The 4400, this reboot still has many elements of the original’s premise, but taken from the perspective of the predominantly black cast. Thousands of people who were abducted from across different points throughout the 21st century are suddenly returned together in the present day with no memory of where they were taken or who took them. What the 4400 do know, however, is that some of them develop different superhuman abilities that drastically change their lives even more.

4400 will debut on The CW on October 25.

Y: THE LAST MAN

The panel featured a conversation with showrunner/writer/executive producer Eliza Clark and several members of the principal cast, including Ben Schnetzer who plays Yorick Brown, the titular last man on Earth after all other humans with a Y chromosome start dropping dead. Even Brian K. Vaughan (co-creator of the comic upon which the series is based) took to the stage in a surprise appearance.

The show went through a lot to get to the small screen: they lost a pair of showrunners, they lost their leading man and then the COVID pandemic hit. They were two weeks from kicking off when the world suddenly went into lockdown.

Clark did share that, “We wanted to photograph people differently, and particularly women, than they have been photographed [before]. Ultimately, what we decided (was) the female gaze was, subjectivity, point-of-view, and detail. You see the roots of hair, you’re seeing skin, sweat, dirt under fingernails. Each scene is shot from somebody’s point-of-view, so that you feel like you’re inside of it.”

THE HOT ZONE: ANTHRAX

The anthology series will be set in the days after the September 11 terrorist attacks when letters led to five deaths and caused panic across the United States.

The cast this time will consist of Daniel Dae Kim [in his first lead role] as FBI Special Agent Matthew Ryker, a character created for the series, and Tony Goldwyn as Dr. Bruce Ivins. Ryker was a microbiologist before he became an FBI agent; Ivins was the lead anthrax researcher for the government.

The Hot Zone: Anthrax will premiere on National Geographic on November 28.

Fall TV Reminder: What’s on TV This Week

Here is the long list of the programming options, including fall TV premieres, finales and debuts as well as movies, to expect on TV this coming week:

On October 11, the 2nd season premiere of The Baby-Sitters Club will air on Netflix online.

The third season premiere of The Oval will air on October 12 at 9 PM on BET.

On October 13, the season premieres of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman will air on The CW at 8 and 9 PM respectively while that same night the fourth season premiere of The Sinner will air at 10 PM on the USA Network.

Also on October 13, the new Hulu drama Dopesick will debut online. The series focuses on “the epicenter of America’s struggle with Opioid addiction” across the U.S. The cast includes Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Kaitlyn Dever, Rosario Dawson, Will Chase, Phillipa Soo, Jake McDorman and Jamie Ray Newman.

The new Disney+ drama Just Beyond will debut online on October 13. The horror comedy anthology, which will consist of 8 episodes and will feature different cast members each episode, journeys into supernatural self-discovery through the worlds of witches, aliens, ghosts, and alternate dimensions. Some of the cast members include Mckenna Grace, Henry Thomas, Sally Pressman, Izabela Vidovic and Malcolm Barrett.

On October 14, the second season premiere of Another Life will air on Netflix online while that same night the fourth season premiere of Legacies will air on The CW at 9 PM.

The new dramedy series Guilty Party will debut online on Paramount+ on October 14. A journalist (Kate Beckinsale) with a tarnished reputation focuses on a story about a woman who denies murdering her husband. The cast includes Geoff Stults, Tiya Sircar and Alanna Ubach.

On October 15, the season finale of See will air online on Apple TV+ while that same night the season premiere of You will air on Netflix online.

The Hallmark Channel movie Advice to Love By will debut at 9 PM on October 16. When a love advice author and a dating columnist cross paths, attraction blooms into more. Using strategies from their own playbooks, is it possible they’ve both met their match – each other. The film stars Erinn Westbrook and Brooks Darnell.

On October 17, the UPtv movie Calling for Love will debut at 7 PM. Successful podcast host Samantha Desouza (Karissa Lee Staples) has a passion for music and an aversion to romance after a recent bad experience. Just when her show is thriving, she is thrown in the deep end by her boss and re-assigned to host Heartwaves, a feel-good love songs show with a segment that reunites lost loves. Despite her initial lack of enthusiasm, her first caller is the charismatic and charming Jake (Tajh Bellow) who has a problem she’s determined to help solve. What they didn’t expect was to fall for each other in the process. Now Sam must decide whether to shy away from love again, or to be a little more spontaneous and follow her heart.

The Hallmark Movies & Mysteries movie Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Vows We Have Made will debut on October 17 at 9 PM. As Shane and Oliver (Kristin Booth and Eric Mabius) prepare to wed, the team helps an unwell boy reunite with a lost friend. A new employee may deliver the answer for Rita and Norman (Crystal Lowe and Geoff Gustafson) to start a family.

Lastly, also on October 17, the season finale of Chesapeake Shores will air at 8 PM on the Hallmark Channel; the 2nd season premiere of Hightown will air on Starz at 8:58 PM; the season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead will air on AMC at 9 PM; the season premiere of Succession will air on HBO at 9 PM and the season premiere of Baptiste will air at 10 PM on PBS.

New Show Introduction: Just Beyond

Cable Ratings for August and September

Summer came to an end and fall TV got underway with plenty of dramas coming to a close, some new dramas debuting and other dramas returning for new seasons. And, of course, there are all the made-for-TV movies that aired.

And, best of all, my ratings source – ShowBuzzDaily – has thankfully been able to get back up and running so while they won’t be provided ratings results as quickly as they did in the past, they will be providing the results so that makes me very happy.

But enough about that…let’s take a look at the ratings for the dramas for the August and September:

CABLE DRAMAS

MONDAYS:

The Beast Must Die – The new revenge drama on AMC aired the final three episodes during August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 159,000 viewers
August 9 – 214,000 viewers
August 16 – 159,000 viewers

This averages out to 177,000 viewers for August. This limited series was only 6 episodes long, and AMC has no plans to continue the series.

Titans – The DC series aired four episodes from its first season during August and the remaining three episodes during September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 2 – 442,000 viewers
August 9 – 318,000 viewers
August 16 – 331,000 viewers
August 30 – 370,000 viewers
September 6 – 454,000 viewers
September 13 – 277,000 viewers
September 20 -265,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 351,000 viewers for that time frame. TNT has yet to announce if it will air the second season of Titans, which aired on HBO Max from September to November of 2019.

TUESDAYS:

Motherland: Fort Salem – The fantasy series aired the final four episodes from its second season during August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 3 – 210,000 viewers
August 10 – 211,000 viewers
August 17 – 161,000 viewers
August 24 – 145,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 182,000 viewers for that timeframe. Motherland: Fort Salem has been renewed by Freeform for a third season, which is anticipated to air sometime in 2022.

The Oval – The Tyler Perry drama aired the final 7 episodes from its second season between August and September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 3 – 735,000 viewers
August 10 – 963,000 viewers
August 17 – 885,000 viewers
August 24 – 915,000 viewers
August 31 – 883,000 viewers
September 7 – 920,000 viewers
September 14 – 961,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 895,000 viewers for that time frame. The Oval will be back with its third season on BET starting on October 12.

Queen Sugar – The OWN drama returned for the start of its 6th season on September 7, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

September 7 – 661,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
September 14 – 563,000 viewers
September 21 – 582,000 viewers
September 28 – 558,000 viewers

This averages out to 591,000 for September. A new episode aired on October 5 with the next new episode of Queen Sugar expected to air on OWN on Tuesday, October 12 at 8 PM.

American Crime Story: Impeachment – The anthology series debuted its new version, focusing on the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal, on FX starting on September 7, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

September 7 – 916,000 viewers (DEBUT)
September 14 – 690,000 viewers
September 21 – 657,000 viewers
September 28 – 601,000 viewers

This averages out to 716,000 for September. A new episode aired on October 5 with the next new episode of American Crime Story: Impeachment expected to air on FX on Tuesday, October 12 at 10 PM.

WEDNESDAYS:

Good Trouble – The Freeform drama aired the final six episodes from its third season during August and September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 4 – 116,000 viewers
August 11 – 143,000 viewers
August 18 – 213,000 viewers
August 25 – 172,000 viewers
September 1 – 115,000 viewers
September 8 – 234,000 viewers (90-Minute Season Finale)

This averages out to 166,000 viewers for that time frame. Good Trouble will return for a fourth season on Freeform at some point in 2022.

Younger – The half-hour dramedy aired the final seven episodes of its 7th and final season during August and September on TV Land. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 4 – 251,000 viewers
August 11 – 271,000 viewers
August 18 – 307,000 viewers
August 25 – 306,000 viewers
September 1 – 306,000 viewers
September 8 – 314,000 viewers
September 15 – 236,000 viewers (One-Hour Series Finale)

This averages out to 284,000 viewers for that time frame.

American Horror Story: Double Feature – The anthology series debuted its 10th version on FX starting on August 25 with back-to-back episodes along with five new episodes during September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 25 – 925,000 viewers (Hour One DEBUT)
August 25 – 581,000 viewers (Hour Two DEBUT)
September 1 – 697,000 viewers
September 8 – 610,000 viewers
September 15 – 642,000 viewers
September 22 – 732,000 viewers
September 29 – 687,000 viewers

This averages out to 696,000 viewers for that time frame. A new episode aired on October 6 with the next new episode of American Horror Story: Double Feature set to air on FX at 10 PM on Wednesday, October 13.

THURSDAYS:

Heartland – The long-running Canadian family drama aired the final six episodes from its 14th seasons on UPtv throughout August and September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 5 – 182,000 viewers
August 12 – 236,000 viewers
August 19 – 217,000 viewers
August 26 – No numbers could be tracked down
September 2 – No numbers could be tracked down
September 9 – No numbers could be tracked (Season Finale)

Four of the final eight episodes of the third and final season of 800 Words aired on UPtv from September 9 and September 30, but no numbers could be tracked down.

FRIDAYS:

SurrealEstate – The new Syfy thriller aired the final seven episodes from its debut season during August and September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 6 – 322,000 viewers
August 13 – 255,000 viewers
August 20 – 341,000 viewers
August 27 – 279,000 viewers
September 3 – 251,000 viewers
September 10 – 277,000 viewers
September 17 – 350,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 296,000 viewers for that time frame. Syfy has yet to announce if SurrealEstate will be back for a second season.

SATURDAYS:

SUNDAYS:

A Discovery of Witches – The third season of the British fantasy series aired its final four episodes during August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 365,000 viewers
August 8 – 386,000 viewers
August 15 – 168,000 viewers (Two-Hour Finale)

This averages out to 229,000 for August. There will be a season three of A Discovery of Witches, but there is no return date set yet by AMC.

Animal Kingdom – The TNT drama aired five new episodes in August, four new episodes in September and its season finale from its fifth season on October 3. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 996,000 viewers
August 8 – 948,000 viewers
August 15 – 888,000 viewers
August 22 – 933,000 viewers
August 29 – 830,000 viewers
September 5 – 939,000 viewers

The White Lotus – The HBO limited series aired the final three episodes from its debut season during August. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 515,000 viewers
August 8 – 541,000 viewers
August 15 – 850,000 viewers (Season Finale)

This averages out to 635,000 viewers for August. HBO had planned for The White Lotus to only be one season, but the series ended up getting a second season. It will be back at some point in 2022.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan – The next spin-off of the Starz drama Power aired the remaining 8 episodes of its debut season during August and September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 1 – 307,000 viewers
August 8 – 378,000 viewers
August 15 – 386,000 viewers
August 22 – No episode aired
August 29 – 348,000 viewers
September 5 – 270,000 viewers

Chesapeake Shores – The Hallmark Channel family drama returned for the start of its fifth season on August 15, airing three episodes during the month along with four episodes during September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 15 – 1.5 million viewers (Season Premiere)
August 22 – 1.3 million viewers
August 29 – 1.5 million viewers
September 5 – 1.5 million viewers
September 12 – 1.5 million viewers
September 19 – 1.6 million viewers

The Walking Dead – The 11th and final season of The Walking Dead got started on AMC on August 22, airing two episodes during the month along with four episodes airing in September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:

August 22 – 2.2 million viewers (Season Premiere)
August 29 – 2 million viewers
September 5 – 1.9 million viewers
September 12 – 1.9 million viewers
September 19 – 1.9 million viewers
September 26 – 1.8 million viewers

This averages out to 2 million viewers for that time frame. A new episode aired on October 3 with the fall finale (the final season is being divided into three parts) of The Walking Dead set to air on AMC on Sunday, October 10 at 9 PM.

Heels – The Starz wrestling drama debuted on August 15, airing three episodes during the month along with three episodes in September. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
