A new year is here, and January has already come to a close. We are also now a full year into dealing with COVID-19, but thankfully we have plenty of dramas on TV to keep us distracted. That being said, it’s time to take a look at how January cable dramas and movies performed.
First, let’s take a look at the ratings for the dramas:
CABLE DRAMAS
MONDAYS:
Snowpiercer – The second season of the TNT sci-fi series premiered on January 25, earning 1.1 million viewers. New episodes aired on February 1 and February 8 with the next new episode of Snowpiercer set to air on TNT on Monday, February 15 at 9 PM.
The Salisbury Poisonings – The BBC drama debuted here in the States on AMC starting on January 25, earning 315,000 viewers. New episodes aired on February 1 and February 8 with the next new episode of The Salisbury Poisonings set to air on AMC on Monday, February 15 at 10 PM.
TUESDAYS:
The Haves and the Have Nots – The final two episodes of the first half of the 8th season aired during January. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 5 – 1.1 million viewers
January 12 – 1.1 million viewers (Mid-Season Finale)
This averages out to 1.1 million viewers for January. The rest of the 8th season of The Haves and the Have Nots will return to OWN sometime this May.
WEDNESDAYS:
C.B. Strike – The second season of the series, based on the best-selling crime novels by Robert Galbraith (the pseudonym for J.K. Rowling), got started on January 20, airing the first two parts of its 4-part season. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 20 – 90,000 viewers
January 27 – 75,000 viewers
This averages out to approximately 83,000 viewers for January. New episodes of C.B.Strike aired on HBO on February 3 and February 10. Ratings for those episodes will be included in the February report.
Resident Alien – The Alan Tudyk-led alien series debuted on Syfy on January 27, earning 1.1 million viewers [as well as 450,000 viewers for its simulcast of that debut episode on the USA Network. Resident Alien aired new episodes on February 3 and 10 with the next episode set to air on Syfy on Wednesday, February 10 at 10 PM.
THURSDAYS:
There were no cable dramas airing on Thursday night during January.
FRIDAYS:
The Astronauts – The Nickelodeon drama about tweeners who inadvertently get sent into space, featuring a great group of adult actors playing their parents, aired the final three episodes of its debut season. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 1 – 312,000 viewers
January 8 – 400,000 viewers
January 15 – 438,000 viewers (Finale)
This averages out to 383,000 for January. Nickelodeon has yet to renew The Astronauts for a second season.
800 Words – The popular Australian family drama aired the first four episodes of its third season on UPtv in January, but ratings could only be tracked down for the first episode, which was 79,000 viewers. New episodes aired on February 5 and 12 with the next episode of 800 Words set to air on UPtv on Friday, February 19 at 9 PM.
SATURDAYS:
There were no cable dramas airing on Saturday night during January.
SUNDAYS:
Your Honor – The Bryan Cranston-led Showtime limited series aired four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 3 – 563,000 viewers
January 10 – 500,000 viewers
January 17 – 745,000 viewers
January 24 – No Episode Aired
January 31 – 662,000 viewers
This averages out to 618,000 viewers for January. A new episode of Your Honor aired February 7 with the final episode set to air on Showtime on Sunday, February 14 at 10 PM.
The Watch – The unusual AMC sci-fi drama debuted with two episodes on January 3, airing six episodes during January. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 3 – 274,000 viewers (Two Episode DEBUT)
January 10 – 209,000 viewers
January 17 – 242,000 viewers
January 24 – 185,000 viewers
January 31 – 233,000 viewers
This averages out to 236,000 viewers for January. A new episode of The Watch aired February 7 with the final episode set to air on BBC America on Sunday, February 14 at 8 PM.
American Gods – The Starz fantasy series aired its third season premiere on January 10, airing four episodes during the month. The ratings for those episodes are as follows:
January 10 – 209,000 viewers (Season Premiere)
January 17 – 185,000 viewers
January 24 – 160,000 viewers
January 31 – 204,000 viewers
This averages out to 190,000 for January. A new episode aired on February 7 with the next new episode of American Gods set to air on Starz on Sunday, February 14 at 8 PM.
Euphoria – The HBO drama aired another special episode on January 24, earning 109,000 viewers. The series will return for a second season, but it is unclear if that will happen in 2021 or 2022.
No ratings could be tracked down for the following dramas on PBS all of which debuted in January: All Creatures Great and Small; Miss Scarlet & The Duke and The Long Song. No ratings could be tracked down for the debut of the new EPIX drama Bridge and Tunnel, which also debuted in January.
MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES
The following are the ratings for the made-for-TV movies that aired in January:
Taking a Shot at Love (Hallmark Channel) – 3 million viewers
A Winter Getaway (Hallmark Channel) – 2.3 million viewers
Snowkissed (Hallmark Channel) – 2.3 million viewers
Wendy Williams: The Movie (Lifetime) – 2.2 million viewers
A New Year’s Resolution (Hallmark Channel) – 2.1 million viewers
Two For the Win (Hallmark Channel) – 2.1 million viewers
Salt-N-Pepa (Lifetime) – 1.6 million viewers
Ships in the Night: A Martha’s Vineyard Mystery (Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) – 1.2 million viewers
Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (BBC America) – 652,000 viewers
Blueprint to the Heart (UPtv) – 200,000 viewers
Romance Retreat (UPtv) – 190,000 viewers
Love Is a Piece of Cake (UPtv) – 174,000 viewers
The Baby Proposal (UPtv) – 167,000 viewers
No ratings could be tracked down for the PBS movie Elizabeth Is Missing.
