RENEWALS/CANCELLATIONS

Perry Mason” has been canceled at HBO after two seasons. (Variety)

The CW has given an early renewal order to one of the network’s new fall series – the Canadian drama Sullivan’s Crossing, a family drama starring Morgan Kohan (When Hope Calls) and former CW alums Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls) and Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), which is based on the novels by Robyn Carr (who is also the author of the books on which the Netflix series Virgin River are based. TV DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Looks like Dick Wolf is expanding the world of Law & Order to Canada. Citytv has given an order for Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, the 10-episdoe drama that will follow an elite squad of detectives who investigate high-profile crime and corruption in Toronto. (The Hollywood Reporter)

TV CASTING NEWS

Sean Bean and Miranda Richardson will star opposite John Malkovich in a biopic that will be about Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache. Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief) is taking over from Rupert Friend, who had to bow out due to scheduling difficulties. The movie, set to be called, The Yellow Tie will tell the story of controversial classical conductor Sergiu Celibidache, one of Romania’s best known classical music artists. He battled homelessness and prejudice before becoming the youngest ever conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. (Variety)

The Amazon small screen adaptation of Cruel Intentions will be saying goodbye to Broadway star Laura Benanti, who was to recur on the series, but has to bow out due to scheduling conflicts. (Variety)

Mo Brings Plenty from Yellowstone has joined the cast of the 1883 offshoot Lawmen: Bass Reeves, playing Minco Dodge, a Choctaw Native American who is friends with the title character, who will be played by David Oyelowo. (TV Line)

Mark Ruffalo has landed the lead role in the untitled upcoming HBO limited series from Brad Ingelsby that will follow a task force of law enforcement officers and the criminals they are trying to apprehend. (Variety)

Details have leaked for the HBO big budget Harry Potter series, including the following cast members: Lesley Manville who will play Professor McGonegal; Liam Cunningham who will play Dumbledore; Andy Serkis who will play Hagrid and Christopher Eccleston playing Profesor Snape. It’s also been rumored that David Tennant is the top choice for Tom Riddle/Voldermort and Ruth Wilson in talks for a major villain role. (Fan Fest Online)

MADE FOR TV MOVIE NEWS

Paris Christmas Waltz is the sequel movie to The Christmas Waltz BUT the sequel will air on Great American Family while the original movie aired on the Hallmark Channel. The sequel will star Glee alum Matthew Morrison and soap star Jen Lilley. (Deadline)

Here are the entertainment news items for the past week:

TV CASTING NEWS

Amazon has announced the main cast for the small-screen adaptation of the box office movie Cruel Intentions, including Sarah Catherine Hook (Netflix’s short-lived First Kill), newcomer Zac Burgess and Khobe Clarke (Firefly Lane and Yellowjackets) [among others] as well as Sean Patrick Thomas (who starred in the original film) and John Harlan Kim (The Librarians and 9-1-1). Broadway vet Laura Benanti and The Closer alum Jon Tenney will have recurring roles. It is unclear at this time if the series will air on Amazon Prime or Freevee. (Variety)

Captain Marvel and No Time to Die actress Lashanna Lynch will star opposite Eddie Redmayne in the Peacock series The Day of the Jackal, which is based on the Frederick Forsyth novel. It will be a modern reimagining telling the story of a chameleon-like anti-hero. Redmayne will play notorious assassin The Jackal, while Lynch will play Bianca, a tenacious law enforcement agent determined to catch The Jackal. (Variety)

The impossible has happened: Kim Cattrall will reprise her role of Samantha Jones in the upcoming second season of the Max sequel series And Just Like That…in a one-off cameo. (TV Line)

BOX OFFICE NEWS

Outlander alum Tobias Menzies will star alongside Kerry Condon and Damson Idris in the as yet untitled Formula One racing feature film that will star Brad Pitt as a former driver who returns to the sport. What role Menzies will play is being kept under wraps. (Variety)

Dwayne Johnson will be back as Luke Hobbs in a new standalone movie within the Fast and Furious franchise. The film has yet to be given a title and no plot details are available, though. (Variety)

The feature film Flamin’ Hot will debut online on June 9 on Hulu and Disney+.

Directed by Eva Longoria, the film is inspired by the true story of Richard Montañez (Jesse Garcia), a Frito-Lay janitor who disrupted the food industry by channeling his Mexican American heritage to turn Flamin’ Hot Cheetos from a snack into an iconic global pop-culture phenomenon.

The cast includes Tony Shalhoub, Dennis Haysbert, Annie Gonzalez and Emilio Rivera.

On June 9, the limited series The Crowded Room will debut its first three episodes online on AppleTV+.

Tom Holland stars as Danny Sullivan, a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. Told through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.

The cast includes Jason Isaacs, Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Will Chase, Thomas Sadoski, Lior Raz, Christopher Abbott and Zachary Golinger.

On June 11, the UPtv movie Written in the Stars will debut at 7 PM.

When Kelsey’s magazine approves her pitch about a sceptic’s take on love and horoscopes, she is teamed up with Astrology guru, Carter. Clearly from opposite worlds, they put their competing perspectives aside to work the story around a local meteor shower festival. Through both fact and fate, they soon unearth that love really can be written in the stars.

The movie stars Kimberley Crossman and David De Lautour.
