Ralph Fiennes directs and stars in this movie based on the Shakespearean tale of a banished Roman war hero who teams with Gerard Butler to lead an assault against the city.
Shame

Michael Fassbender plays a sex addict forced to confront his past when his younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in with him.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Opens: December 2
Based on the first novel in the best-selling Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, the movie is about a middle-aged hard-nosed investigative reporter in Stockholm who loses a libel case and faces jail time. He’s offered an assignment to investigate the 40-year-old disappearance of an industrialist’s niece on a remote island. His work alongside misunderstood rebellious female hacker Lisbeth Salander uncovers religious killings, Nazism, incest, child abuse and murder. The cast includes Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright and Max von Sydow.
New Year’s Eve
Opens: December 9
A huge list of actors and actresses star in this Valentine’s Day-esque sequel about New York City residents as they celebrate New Year’s Eve. Among the cast are Katherine Heigl, Sofia Vergara, Lea Michele, Jon Bon Jovi, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel and Ashton Kutcher (among many more).
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
Opens: December 11
Alvin, Simon and Theodore become shipwrecked on an island. Singing and chipmunk-related hilarity ensues. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Jason Lee and David Cross star.
Loosies [Limited Release]
Opens: December 14
Peter Facinelli wrote and stars in this drama about a New York pickpocket who takes responsibility for a child he discovers he fathered years ago with an ex-girlfriend (Jaimie Alexander).
Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Opens: December 16
A terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin while IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is carrying out an undercover operation in Moscow. The Russian government categorizes the attack as “an undeclared act of war,” prompting United States government to initiate a black operation known as “ghost protocol”, disavowing the entire Impossible Mission Force. Hunt and his four-person team are allowed to escape from the government’s custody as part of a plan to enable them to operate outside of their agency’s command structure. However, when the IMF is ambushed, they are forced to operate without any kind of official support in an attempt to locate an intelligence source connected to the Moscow bombing and the attack on the IMF. The cast includes Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Tom Wilkinson.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes and his longtime trusted associate, Doctor Watson take on their arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty with the help of Holmes’ older brother Mycroft. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris and Stephen Fry.
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
Opens: December 21
A computer-animated motion-capture from Steven Spielberg is based on a two-part story from the classic Herge comics. Murderous antique dealers, a wallet thief and three miniature replicas of a sailing vessel are the key to Tintin’s search for the treasure of 17th century West Indies pirate Red Rackham. The cast includes Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig and Toby Jones.
In the Land of Blood and Honey
Opens: December 23
The story follows a struggling romance between a Muslin woman and a Serbian man as the Bosnian war threatens to tear apart their relationship. The film was written and directed by Angelina Jolie.
The Darkest Hour
Opens: December 23
The story of five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Rachael Taylor and Joel Kinnaman star.
We Bought a Zoo
Opens: December 23
Matt Damon plays real-life London newspaper columnist who moved his family to a decrepit rural zoo and after the death of his wife from cancer, worked to reopen it. The cast includes Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Opens: December 25
Based on the best-selling 2005 novel, the film follows a precocious, hyper-verbal 11-year-old New Yorker named Oskar Schell (newcomer Thomas Horn) and his quest for the lock that fits a mysterious key left behind by his dad (Tom Hanks), who died in the terrorist attacks. Sandra Bullock also stars.
War Horse
Opens: December 25
The Steven Spielberg WWI drama chronicles Joey, young Albert Narracott’s (Jeremy Irvine) beloved horse that is sold to the cavalry and shipped France where he serves in the British and German armies, taking the horse on an extraordinary odyssey. The movie also stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Benedict Cumberbarch and Tom Hiddleston.
The Iron Lady
Opens: December 30
Meryl Streep stars as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in a film that spans seven decades but focuses on the peak of Thatcher’s power in the 1980’s.
