Based on information provided by the Box Office Mojo and some internet research, here are just some of the movies you can expect to see in the movie theatres in August:
The Dark Tower
Opens: August 4
Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil. The cast includes Jackie Earle Haley, Dennis Haysbert and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings).
Detroit
Opens: August 4
A police raid in Detroit in 1967 results in one of the largest race riots in United States history. The story is centered around the Algiers Motel incident, which occurred in Detroit, Michigan on July 25, 1967, during the racially charged 12th Street Riot. It involves the death of three black men and the brutal beatings of nine other people: seven black men and two white women. The film stars John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Laz Alonso, Samira Wiley, Kaitlyn Dever, John Krasinski and Malcolm David Kelley.
Kidnap
Opens: August 4
A mother, Karla Dyson (Halle Berry) stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son, Frankie (Sage Correa).
Columbus
Opens: August 4
A Korean-born man finds himself stuck in Columbus, Indiana, where his architect father is in a coma. The man meets a young woman who wants to stay in Columbus with her mother, a recovering addict, instead of pursuing her own dreams. Together, the two explore the various architectural buildings in Columbus, all the while discovering in each other what they hope to be. The cast includes John Cho, Parker Posey, Rory Culkin and Michelle Forbes.
Wind River
Opens: August 4
US Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) discovers a body in the rugged wilderness of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The FBI sends in rookie agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen), but she’s unprepared for the difficulties created by the oppressive weather and isolation of the Wyoming winter. When she employs Cory as a tracker, the two venture deep into a world ravaged by violence and the elements. The film also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Graham Greene and Ian Bohen (Teen Wolf).
The Glass Castle
Opens: August 11
Based on a memoir, four siblings must learn to take care of themselves as their responsibility-averse, free-spirit parents both inspire and inhibit them. When sober, the children’s brilliant and charismatic father captured their imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Meanwhile, their mother abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want to take on the work of raising a family. The cast includes Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts and Max Greenfield.
The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature
Opens: August 11
The animated film will focus on Surly (Will Arnett) and the park animals must band together to prevent Oakton City’s crooked mayor (Bobby Moynihan) from bulldozing Liberty Park and replacing it with a dangerous amusement park. Other voices will be provided by Katherine Heigl, Maya Rudolph, Bobby Cannavale, Peter Stomare and Jackie Chan.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard
Opens: August 18
A special protection agent (Ryan Reynolds) is tasked with guarding the life of his mortal enemy, who is one of the world’s most notorious hitmen (Samuel L. Jackson), and taking him from England to the International Court of Justice. On their way, they are on high-speed car chases and boat escapes as deadly assassins are pursuing them and they are forced to work together in order to defeat a ruthless, powerful and bloodthirsty Eastern European dictator (Gary Oldman). The film also stars Elodie Yung, Salma Hayek, Richard E. Grant and Joaquim de Almeida.
Tulip Fever
Opens: August 25
Set in the Netherlands in the 17th century, during the period of the tulip mania, an artist (Dane DeHaan) falls for a married young woman (Alicia Vikander) while he’s commissioned to paint her portrait by her husband (Christoph Waltz). The two invest in the risky tulip market in hopes to build a future together. The ensemble cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Dame Judi Dench, Jack O’Connell, Holliday Grainger, Matthew Morrison, Cara Delevingne, Tom Hollander, Kevin McKidd and David Harewood.
