For many, many years, TV ratings have been the life’s blood of every series whether they are on the major or cable networks. How ratings are determined are being questioned, with potential upgrades to that system being put into place at some soon point.
Until that happens, I will continue to provide my ratings reports (daily, monthly and annually), making adjustments as needed based on how those upgrades pan out.
The very long lists that follow are for dramas – and only dramas – that have aired on the major and cable networks during the last half of the 2020-2021 TV season and the first half of the 2021-2022 TV season. The numbers provided below are the average of the overnight viewership for each drama.

The final analyses of all these ratings for both the major and cable networks for the entire year are as follows:
1. NCIS has once again retained its dominance as not only the number one drama on CBS but also the overall number one drama out of all of the major networks. But, while the show still holds the top spot, it’s double digit numbers are a thing of the past. In a close second is The Equalizer, which was last year’s highest rated new drama. This year that placement goes to FBI: International. The lowest rated dramas on CBS are Clarice, which has been cancelled, and SEAL Team, which has moved over to Paramount+.
2. Just like last year, ABC can boast that Station 19 is its top rated drama with Grey’s Anatomy a very close second. As for the lowest rated on the network, For Life and Queens are the bottom two dramas with For Life being cancelled and Queens hanging by a thread.
3. FOX can state that 9-1-1 is still its highest rated drama with 9-1-1: Lone Star nipping at its heels (although the drama didn’t return this fall, but rather will be back early in January 2022). The drama that is a distant “tie” for second place would be The Resident. The two lowest rated dramas on FOX are Prodigal Son, which was cancelled after its second season while Our Kind of People is this fall’s lowest rated drama on the network.
4. Chicago Med and Chicago Fire continue to be the top two dramas on NBC with an extremely small margin between the two. The cancelled dramas Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Good Girls as well as this fall’s Ordinary Joe are the lowest rated dramas, but it should be noted that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist could potentially get a second life on The Roku Channel and Ordinary Joe actually scored over a million more weekly viewers than either drama.
5. The once strong Arrowverse world of dramas on The CW used to hold viewers’ attention, but the majority of those shows have either come to an end or their numbers have diminished greatly. That being said, the DC Universe series Superman & Lois tied evenly with Walker for the top spot at the network with All American holding third place. The lowest rated dramas on The CW are the recently cancelled shows The Republic of Sarah and The Outpost and the recently returning Dynasty.
6. It’s no surprise that the Paramount Network drama Yellowstone has far surpassed any other cable network drama all year, earning over 6 million more viewers every single week. The Walking Dead over at AMC holds a very distant second with the recently ended Good Witch on the Hallmark Channel a close third. The lowest rated cable network dramas include Death & Nightingales and Little Birds both on Starz; the cancelled HBO drama Scenes From a Marriage and the network airing of Intergalactic over on Syfy.
The final list – which is extremely long – covers all of the made-for-TV movies, mini-series, event series and specials that aired during 2021 on both the major and cable networks for which ratings could be tracked down.
