The Pretender Rebirth

From 1996 to 2000, the TV series The Pretender aired on NBC, focusing on genius and former child prodigy Jarod (series lead Michael T. Weiss), who had the ability to become anyone he wanted to be such, impersonating anyone in virtually any line of work.

Jarod was abducted at a young age and was raised in a think tank called The Centre, based in the fictional town of Blue Cove, Delaware. His childhood teacher and mentor Sydney (series lead Patrick Bauchau) and his childhood friend – only ever known as Miss Parker (series lead Andrea Parker) – were both operatives of The Centre, overseeing Jarod in all facets of his “life”.

But one day Jarod escape, traveling the country searching for clues as to his true identity and helping those he encountered along the way. All the while dodging Miss Parker and the myriad of Centre operatives hot in pursuit.

After the series ended in 2000, two TV movies aired on TNT, picking up where the series left off. The first movie was called The Pretender 2001 and the second was called The Pretender: Island of the Haunted.

Thirteen years later, at the stroke of midnight on October 7, the first in a series of novels entitled “Rebirth” based on Jarod and the characters from The Pretender will be available on Amazon; and will eventually hit bookstores.

Here is the run-down on “Rebirth”:

There are Pretenders among us, geniuses with the ability to become anyone they want to be. In 1983 a corporation known as The Centre isolated a young Pretender named Jarod and exploited his genius for their ‘research. Then, one day, their Pretender ran away…

Written by the creators of the cult-hit TV show The Pretender – Rebirth is a slick mystery thriller about a brilliant human chameleon named Jarod who after escaping from the notorious Centre, plunges headlong into his newfound freedom. While also discovering the joys and intricacies of everyday life with the pure wonderment of the man/child he is, Jarod uses his unequaled abilities to literally become anyone he wants to be (a surgeon, a pilot, a physicist, etc.) as well as his dazzling mind over muscle vigilante-like skills to bring down the powerful and corrupt and protect those who can’t defend themselves. All the while he must stay a step ahead of his relentless pursuers from The Centre. First and foremost is the sexiest woman on the planet, the complex, bitch-on-wheels, Miss Parker who wants him recaptured at any cost – alive – preferably. Parker is a deliciously cunning woman Jarod has known since childhood and theirs is a truly multifaceted cat and mouse relationship – one driven by Jarod who holds the key to the emotional secrets at her very core, secrets that fuel her relentless drive to recapture him. Then there is Sydney, Jarod’s surrogate father figure and psychologist who raised and nurtured his genius for The Centre’s disreputable purposes. To Jarod, Syd is both friend and foe, confidante and captor, counselor and betrayer. But Syd’s calm paternal connection to Jarod remains strong, often in conflict with The Centre agenda. Jarod senses Sydney holds the emotional keys to his core – the truth about his past and the identity of the parents he was stolen from and whom he longs to reunite with. In Rebirth, Jarod employs multiple sophisticated pretends in his quest to save one missing boy and hundreds of other innocent lives hanging in the balance at the hands of multi-national corporate terrorists and mercenaries. Rebirth is at once an enthralling tale of one man’s exploration of life around him, intricate suspenseful mystery and intense edge-of-your-seat thrill ride – that captures and reignites the cult hit TV series for both loyal fans of the show and new readers alike. There are Pretenders among us…

Back on June 28, 2007, the USA Network series Burn Notice debuted, starring a then relative unknown actor by the name of Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen, a burned spy who finds himself back in his hometown of Miami, Florida. His former girlfriend and former IRA operative, Fiona Glenanne (Gabrielle Anwar) is by his side soon to be followed by his old buddy and former Navy Seal Sam Axe (the one and only Bruce Campbell). With Michael now back in Miami, he is also reluctantly reunited with his mother Madeline (legendary actress Sharon Gless) and younger brother Nate (Seth Peterson).  The genius of the series centered on Michael receiving a burn notice issued by the CIA (or any intelligence agency) to discredit or announce the dismissal of an agent who is considered to have become unreliable.

As the series-long narrative has explained:

“When you’re burned, you’ve got nothing: no cash, no credit, no job history. You’re stuck in whatever city they dump you in. You do whatever work comes your way. You rely on anyone who’s still talking to you: a trigger happy (ex-)girlfriend; an old friend who used to inform on you to the FBI (and a down and out spy you met along the way); family too – if you’re desperate. Bottom line: As long as you’re burned, you’re not going anywhere”.

BN Season 1

The first season of Burn Notice consisted of 12 episodes, following Michael’s investigation into the identity of the man who burned him. Along the way, in order to keep a roof over his head and money in his pocket in order to survive from day to day, Michael – along with Fiona and Sam – took on cases in and around Miami, helping people out of dire situations, using the long-time skills he honed during his years as a spy. By the end of the debut season, Michael discovered who wrote his burn notice – Phillip Cowan (actor Richard Schiff) – only to see him killed.

This development lead to a cliffhanger ending with Michael being contacted by a mysterious woman named Carla (actress Tricia Helfer), who – in season two (which had 16 episodes) – became his new “handler”, bringing him new clients. He used his professional relationship with Carla to get to the people who burned him. By season’s end, Michael learned that a black ops syndicate, led by a murky man known only as “Management” (actor John Mahoney) had been providing “protection” for Michael from the real people who burned him. But, in a turn of events, Fiona killed Carla and Michael told Management that he wanted out.

BN Season 2

This was a problem for Michael because, at the time, he and Management were flying over the ocean in a helicopter and Michael had only way out: to jump out of the copter and into the ocean. As he emerged from the ocean in the opening episode of the 16-episode third season, Michael was greeted by Michelle Paxson (actress Moon Bloodgood), a Miami police detective who was intent on bringing Michael down.

A great deal went down during season three including the following:

• Michael eventually convinced Paxson to stay away;
• Michael is approached by Tom Strickler (actor Ben Shenkman), an agent to spies who claimed he could have Michael’s burn notice lifted, but at a steep cost; in the end Michael killed Strickler to save Fiona’s life;
• Michael also meet Diego Garza (actor Otto Sanchez), a CIA agent who gave Michael information about his burn notice, but Garza was killed by Mason Gilroy (actor Chris Vance), a freelance psychopath, leaving Michael right back at square one;
• Gilroy then pulled Michael into breaking out a high-risk felon – Simon Escher (actor Garret Dillahunt) – who was the one who committed the crimes for which Michael was burned; and,
• In the end, Michael is arrested and taken to a mysterious room in the final episode.

BN Season 3

As season four opened, this time with 18 episodes, Michael learned that he wasn’t actually in prison, he was in a elaborately decorated home, being approached by yet mystery man – this time Vaughn (actor Robert Wisdom), a high-ranking member of management, who served as Michael’s new handler, bringing him various jobs.

It was during this season that Michael inadvertently burned a spy: Jesse Porter (new series regular Coby Bell); and while the two have a contentious relationship once the truth of Michael’s actions come to light, they eventually come to be friends and Jesse’s joins the team.

BN Season 4

During this season Michael also reconnected with Simon (yes, the high-risk felon), learning that John Barrett (actor Robert Patrick), a telecommunications magnate, had a coded Bible that contained a complete list of the people who burned him. In order to save himself, though, Michael was forced to kill Barrett, losing the Bible in the process. Later, Sam and Jesse were able to reclaim the list, giving it to Marv (actor Richard Kind), Jesse’s old handler; but the list is taken by one of Michael’s old foes: Tyler Brennan (actor Jay Karnes), who hires another of Michael’s enemies – “Dead” Larry Sizemore (actor Tim Matheson), to track down the people on the list.

Eventually, Vaughn – Michael’s new handler – returns to Miami to have Fiona, Jesse and Michael killed, but Sam and Madeline are able to track down a congressman who was able to help. But that help comes in the form of Michael being taken yet again: only this time he is taken to Washington D.C. (in the season finale) by an unidentified man (actor Dylan Baker) who states, “Welcome Back” to Michael as the season comes to a close.

BN Season 5

Season five of Burn Notice consisted of 18 episodes, but time jumped six months with Michael rejoining the CIA as a consultant, working with Raines, the aforementioned unidentified man (actor Dylan Baker) and Max (actor Grant Show), his new handler. The mission is to hunt down and arrest all of the people on the list from the Bible. The mission is successful for the most part, except for the final man on the list, who is actually already dead. Michael is consumed with inconsistencies he found in the files; and when Max is killed, Michael is framed for the murder.

This leads to an elaborate cat-and-mouse game for Michael in clearing his name and working with yet another new handler – this time Dani Pearce (actress Lauren Stamile) and finally coming face-to-face with the man who burned him: Anson Fullerton (actor Jere Burns). Fullerton was as dirty as they come, though as he was blackmailing Fiona to get Michael to do as he ordered. After one too many crimes and increasingly dangerous missions committed for Fullerton, Fiona turns herself in to the authorities in order to free Michael.

BN Season 6

Once again, season six consisted of 18 episodes, this time finding Fiona in prison for a crime she really didn’t commit and Michael doing work for the CIA agent who trained him: Tom Card (actor John C. McGinley) as well as still working for Pearce. They finally capture Fullerton, but at the cost of Nate (Michael’s brother) life. Now top on Michael’s radar is the man who killed his little brother: a killer named Tyler Gray (actor Kenny Johnson). Sadly, though, Michael and the team learned that Card was actually the one who hired Gray and that Card planned to have the entire team killed. They escape this dilemma with Michael now gunning for Card, who he killed point-blank in his lush office. This puts a bulls-eye on the heads of everyone: Michael, Sam, Fiona, Jesse and Madeline by gun-ho CIA agent Olivia Riley (actress Sonja Sohn), who wanted to bring Michael down.

BN Season 7

Through an elaborate set of circumstances, though, Michael is the one who triumphant but at the expense of everyone he loves. He once again had to make a deal in order to save his family and friends from lifetime imprisonment. But, this deal set him on the path – as seen in the 13-episode seventh and final season – of working with Andrew Strong (actor Jack Coleman), a high-ranking CIA official, who puts Michael under deep cover to bring down Randall Burke (actor Adrian Pasdar), who was believed to be running a freelance terror operation.

That undercover mission has since led Michael to Russian operative Sonya (actress Alona Tal), who the now deceased Burke told Michael was “the key to everything”. Sonya has since led Michael to James (actor John Pyper-Ferguson), the man calling the shots for the terror organization. Despite Michael wanting to bring James down in order to end his deal with Strong and provide real freedom to Fiona, Sam, Jesse and his mom Madeline, it has become clear that Michael is starting to see things a bit too close to James’ vision.

And that is where viewers have been left hanging for the series finale, trying to determine just what Michael is going to do next; and what kind of outcome that will lie at the feet of his friends and mom.

Make sure to tune into the final episode (EVER!) of Burn Notice on Thursday, September 12 at 10 PM on the USA Network.

Every summer (or any TV season for that matter) TV viewers are always surprised by interesting or intriguing characters in new or returning shows in the form of the new “bad guy/girl”, the “love interest” or the great “new assistant or sidekick”.

This summer hasn’t been any different with lots of great characters to enjoy watching week after week, but there have been some very specific characters that I feel deserved a little extra attention before the fall TV season starts, overloading us with even more characters to welcome back or welcome to our TV screens.

Those characters are as follows (they appear in no particular order):

Ryan Hurst

Ryan Hurst

Edgar Roy (Ryan Hurst) on King Maxwell – The new TNT series, of course, mainly focuses on private investigator Sean King (series lead Jon Tenney) and Michelle Maxwell (series lead Rebecca Romijn), but it has been their assistant Edgar Roy who has made watching the show extra fun. While Edgar is an autistic savant with an incredible skill for numerical patterns and sequences, he is also a high-tech pro with amazing hacking skills and a dedicated friend to Michelle and especially Sean. Edgar has been a surprisingly fun character to get to know.

Haley Webb

Haley Webb

Jennifer Blake (Haley Webb) on Teen Wolf – The MTV thriller has focused heavily on the werewolves of Beacon Hill, but the packs had a new foe to deal with this year in the form of the Darach, who turned out to be mild-mannered English teacher Jennifer Blake – who was also the love interest of Alpha Derek (series regular Tyler Hoechlin). I don’t know about anyone else who watched the show this season, but I so DID NOT see this reveal coming until it was literally upon us and while I really ended up disliking Jennifer for all she did to all her victims – as well as breaking Derek’s heart – she was, if nothing else, captivating to watch; and I have to admit I was a little sad to see her perish at the hands of Derek’s uncle Peter (recurring star Ian Bohen).

Magda Apanowicz

Magda Apanowicz

Emily (Magda Apanowicz) on Continuum – This Syfy series – that is actually a Canadian import – has been focused on Kiera Cameron (series lead Rachel Nichols), the inadvertent time-traveling cop from 2077, who winds up in present day Vancouver, chasing after members of a terrorist cell set out to change the future. But, this season it has been Emily (aka Mia Hartwell), who has caught my attention. She may have started out as nothing more than a spy for Escher (recurring star Hugh Dillion), striking up a relationship with his son Alec; but it was her killer “kick-butt” moves and the real love she developed for Alec (the creator of the cybernetic implants used by Kiera in her role as a cop in her time) that endeared her to viewers. Much like Jennifer in Teen Wolf, it was sad to see Emily needlessly killed in the penultimate episode.

Rebecca Wisocky

Rebecca Wisocky

Evelyn Powell (Rebecca Wisocky) on Devious Maids – To be honest, I was completely unsure whether I would like this Latino-laced soap opera after giving up on its Americanized “twin” (so to speak) [Desperate Housewives] half-way through that show’s 8 season run; but I was won over by the most unlikely of characters: Evelyn Powell. Yes, she is apeshit crazy, she is an elitist and a gossipmonger, but I’ve actually meet women much like Evelyn during my short-time working amongst the haughty Beverly Hills society. I can vouch they exist, but I’ll take Evelyn over any of the real Beverly Hills women any day. Can anyone who watches the show imagine it without Evelyn? No? I rest my case.

Mike Vogel

Mike Vogel

Dale ‘Barbie’ Barbara (Mike Vogel) on Under the Dome – Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! Barbie gets trapped inside Chester’s Mill just as a mysterious dome settles over the town. He is in a bit of a quandary, having killed the husband of local newspaper editor Julia Shumway (series regular Rachelle LeFevre), who he is now romancing [awkward, right?!]. His former military skills help when he is asked by the local law to help keep the peace, but what will happen when all his deep, dark secrets are revealed?

Seycelle Gabriel

Seycelle Gabriel

Lourdes Delgado (Seycelle Gabriel) on Falling Skies – The former college medical student, who became a full-fledged doctor since the 2nd Massachusetts Militia Regiment has been residing in Charleston, the new capital of the United States after the deadly alien invasion that decimated the country two years previous. But all is not right when it is eventually revealed that Lourdes has been the mysterious mole within Charleston, being infected with eye worms somehow set upon her by the Espheni. She not only killed Arthur Manchester (recurring actor Terry O’Quinn), but also killed President Hathaway (recurring guest Stephen Collins) and nearly destroyed Charleston to boot. While being held prisoner, she is seemingly cured by a now six-year old Alexis, the daughter of Tom Mason (series lead Noah Wyle) and Anne Glass (series lead Moon Bloodgood).

Jaime Murray

Jaime Murray

Stahma Tarr (Jaime Murray) on Defiance – Looks can be deceiving and that statement is never more true than when looking at Castithan (one of eight alien races that now live among humans in a futuristic Earth) Stahma Tarr. Her husband may be seen as an ambitious businessman, but he is nothing more than a mentally-unstable brute and his wife isn’t much better. Cunning and arrogant, Stahma is the real power behind her elitist family, whose hands are far from clean. She not only had an affair with town madam Kenya Rosewater (series regular Mia Kirshner), but also was behind Kenya’s disappearance and she knows where all the bodies are buried from her husband’s dirty politics.

Some of the Orphan Black Clones

Some of the Orphan Black Clones

All the clones (Tatiana Maslany) on Orphan Black: What can be said about all of the clones in Orphan Black let alone the one actress who plays them all? AMAZING, right?! But, each one is three-dimensional and complex, starting with Sarah Manning, the con artist, thief and mother of Kira; the late Beth Childs, the mentally-unstable cop who committed suicide right in front of Sarah; Alison Hendrix, the uptight suburban soccer mom; Cosima Niehaus, the lesbian college student with the scientific knowledge to hopefully figure out the origin of the clones; the late Helena, the Ukrainian assassin who was actually the bio-twin of Sarah; Rachel Duncan (aka the “proclone”) who works for the very people who created the clones and the late Katja Obinger, Danielle Fournier and Janika Zingler.

Those are the most surprising characters from summer TV that caught my attention. Which ones made you stop and take notice? Please share your thoughts below.

On the last day of Comic-Con 2013, some of the top sci-fi authors gathered for a panel entitled “Witches and Fey, Monsters and Mortals” about all those things that go bump in the night for which they have created for their books.

The panelists included the following:

Rachel Caine, the author of The Weather Warden series, The Red Letter Days series, The Morganville Vampires series (which is actually being made into an online series), The Athena Force series, The Outcast Season series and The Revivalist series;

Brom (aka Gerald Brom), the author of Metamorphosis, Offerings, Brom’s Little Black Book, Darwerks: The Art of Brom, The Plucker, The Devil’s Rose, The Child Thief and Krampus the Yule Lord;

Leigh Bardugo, the author of The Witch of Duva and the books of the Grisha trilogy, including Shadow and Bone and Siege and Storm.

Seanan McGuire, the author of the InCryptid series and the October Daye series;

Amber Benson, the author of the Calliope Reaper-Jones series and the Ghosts of Albion series (TV viewers will also recognize Amber for her recurring role on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer);

C. Robert Cargill, the author of Queen of the Dark Things and Dreams and Shadows;

Morgan Rhodes, the author of the Falling Kingdoms series; and,

S.M. (Shannon) Wheeler, the author of Sea Change.

Some of the authors first talked about their backgrounds and how that differs greatly from what they are doing now; such as Rachel who shared that she studied accounting and music in college and Robert stated that he is a “history buff”, but that actually helped in his writing because what we know as fantasy “was someone else’s religion” at one point in time. And, Leigh shared that she was an English major (which obviously helped in her career path) and that she wanted to make the creatures from the dark ages into literal beings that would “scare the crap” out of her readers.

And some of the authors then talked about what drew them to their particular creations with Brom sharing that “monsters don’t know they are monsters” and “one person’s God is another person’s demon” so it was interesting for him to develop the creatures in his stories and in his artwork.

When the subject of whether they designed their own creatures or created them from research, Robert shared that he “did create a fairy based on mythology” while Seanan stated that she “does both”. Then Brom shared that “he feels like he is role-playing with his monsters”, making it easier to design them.

Of course the subject of what character in pop culture scares each of the authors most brought out quite different answers:

• Morgan – Pinhead from Hellraiser and the girl from The Ring
• Robert – Freddie Kreuger
• Rachel – The gentlemen from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
• Shannon – The creatures in the video game Silent Hill
• Seanan – Creep Show 2
• Brom proudly announced that “he loves monsters” and it is actually “his happy place” but he does not like parasites.

Then the discussion turned to what each of the authors are currently working on:

• Shannon – Sea Change sequel
• Morgan – Fallen Kingdom book 3
• Robert – Dreams & Shadows sequel, a possible Sinister movie sequel as well as a possible adaptation of the movie in video game format
• Amber – A new series of books with the working title “Witches of Echo Park”
• Seanan – Working on six different, ongoing projects
• Leigh – Book three of her current series
• Brom – A collection of illustrations and a fifth novel
• Rachel – The Morganville Vampires online series and for the first time in 20 years, she is taking some much deserved time off

Much too soon, the panel had to come to an end with a short Q&A from the audience; and that brought to an end my last day at Comic Con 2013 as well.

Just Us Guys

For the first time in all of the years I have been attending the San Diego Comic-Con (that would be 12 years in case you were wondering), I attended the independent film festival, which has been a juried event contained within the annual fete since 2005.

The four-day festival screens some of the very best in genre-related short and long films as part of Comic-Con. The festival’s categories include action/adventure, animation, comics-related, documentary (pop culture related), horror/suspense, humor, and science fiction/fantasy. The winners of each category are decided by a panel of judges made up of film and popular arts industry luminaries; this year that included actress Kathy Najimy, Entertainment Weekly columnist (and former LA Times writer) Geoff Boucher and filmmaker Alex DeMille.

Trophies and prizes are given to the films deemed by the judges to be the best in each category, and an overall “Judges’ Choice Award”, which is presented to the one film considered the best film in the festival.

I attended a portion of the festival in support of my friend Chris Lilly’s online series “Just Us Guys” that was selected to be part of the top 50 films selected from among the 300 plus films that were submitted for the festival. That is quite a feat, in and of itself,

After the initial screening of “Just Us Guys” during the festival, Chris took to the stage along with his film editor Clinton Steeds (That’s So Raven and Cory in the House) and writing consultant Mark Litton (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) to participate in a moderator Q&A.

Chris was first asked what the genesis of “Just Us Guys” was with his reveal being that he wrote a horror script similar to that of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer back in 2009; and then he ended up writing a pilot that was Gilmore Girls but with guys inspired, which is what eventually became “Just Us Guys”.

When talking about what viewers of the online series can expect next, Chris shared that he is working on how to tell the full 13 ten-minute episodes for season two of “Just Us Guys” that will be more comedic and more father-son-based. And, he also shared that Elsie (played by Phylicia Goings) – who is the dynamic new comic book store employee – is actually being prepped as a spin-off series.

Mark and Chris then shared how they came to know each other, and it was through the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which was the show that changed Chris’s life, making him want to work in the industry. In fact, Chris named his production company – 82893 Productions – after the date that changed his life.

When the awards ceremony was presented on the last day of the convention, “Just Us Guys” was – unfortunately – not among the winners of the categories listed above, but when asked how he felt about the results, Chris was positive, sharing that he was already a winner by having his online series selected as part of the festival, getting great exposure and having the opportunity to network with everyone who participated in the Independent Film Festival.
