The Scapegoat

On January 22, the two-hour Ovation movie The Scapegoat will debut at 8 PM.

Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters and the upcoming The Americans) will star in this made-for-TV movie based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier that is set in 1952 in Great Britain. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth is in preparation and we meet John Standing (Rhys), who teaches Greek in a shabby prep school until he is unceremoniously dismissed. He decides to embark on an adventure, heading out by train to explore the continent, but on a stop-over he meets his mirror image in a bar and spends a night getting to know “Johnny”, a man of privilege who longs to escape his responsibilities.

New Show Introduction: The Following

The Following

The series premiere of the new FOX thriller The Following will debut on January 21 at 9 PM.

When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) to consult on the case.

The cast includes Shawn Ashmore (The X-Men movie franchise), Annie Parisse (Person of Interest), Natalie Zea (Justified) and newcomer Kyle Catlett.

NOTE: Actress Jeananne Goossen (Alcatraz) is featured in the pilot, but will not be seen in the rest of the series. And, the pilot episode features a guest role by Maggie Grace (Lost).

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Viewers should be forewarned that this series has many disturbing moments – viewer discretion is strongly advised!

On January 19, the Lifetime movie Prosecuting Casey Anthony will debut at 8 PM.

Rob Lowe stars as Jeff Ashton, the Florida prosecutor in the controversial Caylee Anthony murder trial. The film reveals Ashton’s inside story of the true crime drama that captivated and then shocked the nation when Caylee Anthony’s mother, Casey, was acquitted of killing her daughter, despite what many thought to be overwhelming evidence of guilt.

The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost and Revolution), Oscar Nunez (The Office), Marisa Ramirez (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena), Kevin Dunn (Transformers) and Virginia Welch (A God Named Pablo) as Casey Anthony.

New Show Introduction: Ripper Street

Ripper Street

The new BBC America drama Ripper Street will debut on January 19 at 9 PM.

The series is set in Whitechapel (in England) in 1889, six months after Jack the Ripper claimed his last victim.

The series stars Matthew Macfadyen (MI-5 and Pride and Prejudice), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Adam Rothenberg (Alcatraz), Myanna Buring (The Twilight Saga and White Heat) and David Dawson (Luther and The Secret Diary of a Call Girl).

Sweeter Side of Life

On January 19, the Hallmark Channel movie The Sweeter Side of Life will debut at 9 PM.

Kathryn Morris (Cold Case) plays Desiree Harper, whose perfect life as the wife of a high-powered Manhattan doctor comes to a sudden end when her husband says he wants a divorce and invokes their ironclad pre-nup to leave her penniless. Desiree soon finds herself abandoned by her rich friends and back in her New Jersey hometown helping her father in his struggling bakery. Though Desiree wants nothing more than to return to her high-class life, spending time with her father causes her to see things differently. She rediscovers her love of baking and puts her business degree to work to save her father’s shop. Desiree’s success at the bakery leads to an unexpected opportunity which forces her to choose between what she has lost and the new life she has found.

The cast includes James Best (from the original TV series The Dukes of Hazzard) as Desiree’s father.

New Show Introduction: The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries

On January 14, the new CW series The Carrie Diaries will debut at 8 PM.

Based on the novels by Candace Bushnell, it is 1984, and life isn’t easy for 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb from Soul Surfer). Since their mother passed away, Carrie’s younger sister Dorritt (Stefania Owen) is more rebellious than ever, and their father Tom (Matt Letscher from Eli Stone) is overwhelmed with the responsibility of suddenly having to care for two teenage girls on his own. Carrie’s friends – sweet, geeky Mouse (Ellen Wong), snarky Maggie (Katie Findlay) and sensitive Walt (Brendan Dooling) – make life bearable, but a suburban life in Connecticut isn’t doing much to take her mind off her troubles. Even the arrival of a sexy new transfer student named Sebastian (Austin Butler from Life Unexpected) only reminds Carrie that she spent the whole summer grieving rather than moving on with life. So when Tom offers Carrie the chance to intern at a law firm in Manhattan, she leaps at the chance.

The cast includes Chloe Bridges (90210) and Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who).

New Show Introduction: Continuum

Syfy will introduce the Canadian series Continuum on January 14 at 8 PM.

When a group of rebels convicted as terrorists escape execution by fleeing from the year 2077 to 2012, Officer Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols from Alias and Star Trek), a future Vancouver law enforcement officer (called a Protector), is involuntarily transported with them. In order to track the terrorists down and keep them from changing the past (and presumably future), Kiera joins the 2012 Vancouver Police Department and uses the skills of a young tech expert, Alec Sadler (Erik Knudsen from Jericho), to both track the Liber8 agents’ pasts and provide her with the necessary information and contacts to operate in the present despite her lack of official credentials.

The cast includes Victor Webster (Castle and Mutant X), Stephen Lobo (Arctic Air), Roger Cross (24) and Lexa Doig (Stargate: SG-1).

Nearlyweds

On January 12, the Hallmark Channel original movie The Nearlyweds will debut at 9 PM

Danielle Panabaker (Shark) stars as a new bride who deals with a rocky path in her almost marriage, fueled largely by her monster-in-law, Renee (Naomi Judd). When Erin (Panabaker), Casey (Jessica Parker Kennedy from The Secret Circle) and Stella (Britt Irvin from Smallville) discover that a paperwork error has annulled all their marriages, they reassess their relationships with their new nearly-husbands.

The made-for-TV movie co-stars Travis Milne (Rookie Blue), Ryan Kennedy (Hannah’s Law) and Steve Bacic (Big Love).

The story is set in a Pennsylvania Amish country and features an enigmatic ex-con/martial arts expert posing as a murdered sheriff who imposes his own brand of justice while also cooking up plans that serve his own interests.

The cast includes Antony Starr (Rush), Ivana Milicevic (Mind of the Married Man), Ulrich Thomsen (“The Celebration”), Frankie Faison (The Wire) and Ben Cross (Star Trek) also star.

When Vivian Bowers, a famous socialite, is found dead from what appears to be an overdose, her former best friend, Detective Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good), is re-embraced by the wealthy Bowers family, and in time she begins to uncover the truth of what really happened with her friend’s death.
