Joker
Opens: October 4
In 1981, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a failed stand-up comedian, turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. The cast includes Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy.
Lucy in the Sky
Opens: October 4
Astronaut Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman) returns to Earth after a lengthy space mission where she begins an affair with fellow astronaut Mark Goodwin (Jon Hamm). Due to her experience far from home, Lucy heads into a downward spiral as she loses connection to her family, and when her lover begins another affair with an astronaut trainee, the bottom drops out. The film also stars Zazie Beetz, Dan Stevens, Colman Domingo, Ellen Burstyn, Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro and Jeffrey Donovan.
The Addams Family
Opens: October 11
In this animated movie, the Addams family’s lives begin to unravel when they move to New Jersey and face-off against the 21st century and its greedy, arrogant and sly reality TV host Margaux Needler while also preparing for thei extended family to arrive for a major celebration. Voices will be provided by Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snopp Dogg, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Elsie Fisher, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Pom Klenentieff, Aimee Garcia, Tituss Burgess and Jenifer Lewis.
Gemini Man
Opens: October 11
Henry Brogan (Will Smith), an aging government assassin seeking to exit his career, finds himself going up against a younger clone of himself named Junior, who’s able to predict his every move. With no other choice, Henry must uncover the truth behind Junior’s creation and save him from going down the same dark path he did, all while fighting against a corrupt system determined to “retire” him at all costs. The cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Opens: October 18
Five years after the first film, Maleficent’s (Angelina Jolie) peaceful life in the Moors takes an unexpected turn when Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) proposes to Aurora (Elle Fanning) and she accepts. Unbeknownst to all, Phillip’s mother, Queen Ingrith of Ulstead (Michelle Pfeiffer), plans to use the wedding to divide humans and fairies forever. With Maleficent and Aurora finding themselves on opposite sides of an impending war, the two question whether they can truly be a family. The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, Imelda Stauton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Warwick Davis and David Gyasi.
The Lighthouse
Opens: October 18
The film chronicles the gritty adventures of two lighthouse keepers as they are faced with loneliness, friendship and their worst fears, including how long it has been since they have been in the lighthouse. The movie stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
Black and Blue
Opens: October 23
New Orleans PD rookie Alicia West (Naomie Harris) captures the murder of a drug dealer on her body cam. What’s more disturbing is that the murder has been committed by her partner and a squad of dirty police officers (Frank Grillo, Reid Scott, Beau Knapp). Unable to get help from her former community or the police department she’s sworn to, West allies herself with a stranger named Milo (Tyrese Gibson) in an attempt to expose the murder while a local gang puts out a bounty on West’s life. The cast also includes Nafessa Williams and Mike Colter.
The Current War
Opens: October 23
The film presents the story of the “war of the currents” between electricity titans Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), and partners George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), which determined whose electrical system would power the modern world. Edison has decided on Direct Current (DC) but it is limited in range and is expensive. Westinghouse sets out to prove Alternating Current (AC) can work over longer distances at significantly lower cost. Edison and Westinghouse compete to get cities across the United States to use their system. Edison suggests that AC is dangerous and engages in a publicity war, while Westinghouse stands behind the technical merits of AC. As Edison struggles to find ways to make DC more affordable, Westinghouse attempts to get the high voltage AC system to work with motors. The competing systems come to a head as they both put forward proposals to illuminate the Chicago World’s Fair. The film also stars Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Tuppence Middleton and Matthew Macfadyen.
The Last Full Measure
Opens: October 23
Fifty-three years after his death, Airman William H. “Pits” Pitsenbarger, Jr. (Christopher Plummer) is awarded the nation’s highest military honor for his actions on the battlefield. The film also stars Sebastian Stan, William Hurt, Ed Harris, Zach Roerig, Samuel L. Jackson, Ser’Darius Blain, the late Peter Fonda, Jeremy Irvine, LisaGay Hamilton, Michael Imperioli, Diane Ladd, Amy Madigan, Linus Roache, Bradley Whitford and John Savage.
Frankie
Opens: October 23
Three generations grappling with a life-changing experience during one day of a vacation in Sintra, Portugal, a historic town known for its dense gardens and fairy-tale villas and palaces. The cast includes Isabelle Huppert, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei, Jeremie Renier, Brendan Gleeson and Vinette Robinson.
